Month: February 2024

Back in June of 2021, it was announced that Julian Sands, best known around here for playing the Warlock in the 1989 horror film fittingly titled Warlock and then coming back for the sequel Warlock: The Armageddon, had signed on to star in a new genre project called The Piper, which puts a horrific twist on the legend of the Pied Piper. Sadly, it was only seven months later that we heard Sands had gone missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy. Six months later, his body was found. He did get to work on The Piper before he passed away, though, and the film is now ready to make its way out into the world. It’s set to receive a theatrical and digital/on demand release on March 8th, and with that date exactly one month away a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

The Piper may not be the last Julian Sands film we see, as he’s also in the drama Body Odyssey, which is making the festival rounds, and is said to have a role in the thriller The Last Breath, which is currently in post-production.

Written and directed by Erlingur ThoroddsenThe Piper was filmed at Millennium Media’s Nu Boyana Studios in Bulgaria. Described as a “dark re-imagining of the Pied Piper tale”, it will show a young composer getting the opportunity of a lifetime when she is tasked with finishing her late mentor’s concerto. But she soon discovers that playing the music summons deadly consequences, leading her to uncover the disturbing origins of the melody and the evil force it has awakened: the Pied Piper.

Sands is joined in the cast by Charlotte Hope, who appeared in 2018’s The Nun and played the character Myranda on eight episodes of Game of Thrones. Oliver Savell (Belfast) and newcomer Aoibhe O’Flanagan are in the cast as well.

Hellraiser‘s Christopher Young composed the score for The Piper. The film was produced by Bernard Kira, Les Weldon, and Millennium Media’s Yariv Lerner, Jeffrey Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger, and Tanner Mobley. Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Trevor Short, Victor Hadida, Lonnie Ramati, and Nicole Swinford serve as executive producers.

Mobley had this to say about the project: “Erlingur wrote a chilling script that adapts the sinister tale of the Pied Piper into a modern day horror villain. The story and team, including iconic composer Christopher Young, has attracted an amazing cast led by Charlotte and Julian.

Erlingur Thoroddsen previously wrote and directed the horror films Child Eater and Rift, and also wrote the Midnight Kiss episode of the Hulu / Blumhouse anthology series Into the Dark.

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is off and running (pun intended). Not long ago, the official movie’s social media account released a short announcement trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in addition to the announcement that Jim Carrey, who had been circling around the decision to retire, will in fact return as the eggman himself, Dr. Robotnik. The third installment in the series teased the crossover of another character from the Sega game’s universe, Shadow, as the latest addition to the hedgehog family. Paramount has also now released the trailer for the Paramount+ limited series, Knuckles.

According to the press release from Paramount,
“The new live-action event series follows Knuckles (Idris Elba) on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior. The series takes place between the films SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 and SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3.

In addition to Elba starring as the titular character, Adam Pally reprises his role from the film franchise as Wade Whipple. The ensemble cast includes guest stars Stockard Channing (The West Wing), Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones), Scott Mescudi (Don’t Look Up), Ellie Taylor (Ted Lasso), Julian Barratt (Mindhorn), Rory McCann (Game of Thrones), Cary Elwes (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), Paul Scheer (Black Monday), and Rob Huebel (Childrens Hospital). Special guest star Ben Schwartz will reprise his role as Sonic, as well as special guest star Tika Sumpter, reprising her role as Maddie. Colleen O’Shaughnessey will also return as a special guest star in her role as Tails.”

In addition to today’s official trailer, on Sunday, February 11, an all-new KNUCKLES spot will debut during the CBS Television Network’s Super Bowl LVIII pregame broadcast. The KNUCKLES Super Bowl spot will also be featured in Nickelodeon’s special kids and family broadcast of Super Bowl LVIII, where Knuckles and some friends will make a surprise appearance.

The series will have six episodes and all six episodes of the series will be available to stream on Friday, April 26, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada; the following day, April 27, in all additional Paramount+ territories; and in Japan later this year.

Those of us who grew up watching Nickelodeon’s 90s slate of shows are about to be shocked to know how bad things actually were behind the scenes. When the kids’ network added more than cartoons and children’s entertainers/game shows to their schedule, it seemed like the channel was really reaching its audience by having shows for kids and featuring kids. It would make the network much hipper, and the man behind it all was Dan Schneider. Formerly a teen actor on the 80s sitcom Head of the Class, Schneider struck it big when he produced the sketch show, All That, which was in the vein of Saturday Night Live but with younger comedian performers.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the trailer for the new docuseries from Investigation Discovery. Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV is a four-part series that will be exploring all the sinister behavior that Dan Schneider had been accused of instituting in the making of all of Nickelodeon’s hit shows. Quiet on Set interviews female employees who worked on Schneider’s many shows. The docuseries is directed by Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz.

Schneider’s behavior was somewhat brought to the spotlight, but never truly explored in depth…until now. The famous kids network would separate with the prolific showrunner in 2018 after 25 years of collaboration. Nickelodeon would release a statement that said, “Following many conversations together about next directions and future opportunities, Nickelodeon and our longtime creative partner Dan Schneider/Schneider’s Bakery have agreed to not extend the current deal.”

After All That, Schneider would roll out hit-after-hit with shows like The Amanda Show, What I Like About You, Drake & Josh, Zoey 101, iCarly, Victorious and Sam & Cat. His projects would launch talents like Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, Victoria Justice, Miranda Cosgrove, Jennette McCurdy and Amanda Bynes. Many have speculated that Bynes’ erratic behavior in the past few years stemmed from alleged psychological and physical abuse she sustained from working with Schneider. There is even a tease at the end of the trailer that a big name may show up to give their personal account. Could it be possibly Bynes? The unfortunate thing is…it could be a number of notable names.

The Quiet on Set series will premiere across two nights on ID on March 17 and March 18.

The  George A. Romero classic Dawn of the Dead (get it HERE) is a film that can actually reasonably celebrate its 45th anniversary in two separate years. While its premiere was held at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978 and a cut of the film that was put together by co-financier Dario Argento for non-English speaking countries was given a theatrical release in Italy that year, the cut Romero put together for English-language speaking territories didn’t make its way to screens in the United States until ’79. So whether you’re celebrating Dawn of the Dead‘s 45th anniversary in 2023 or 2024, or both, you’re still doing it right. Red Band Releasing is looking to bring Dawn of the Dead back to the screen in the U.S. and Canada this year, and have sent out a message to fans, telling them that if they want to see the movie on the big screen, they should get in contact with their local theatres and/or drive-ins.

Red Band Releasing wrote, “We are currently booking Theatres and Drive-Ins to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the 1979 North American Premiere and Release of George A. Romero’s DAWN of the DEAD! If you live in the U.S.A. or Canada, reach out to the owner or general manager of your local independent Theatre or Drive-In and tell them to email RedBandReleasing@gmail.com for info about the Special Discounted Booking Terms being offered in celebration of the 45th Anniversary! PLEASE SHARE!

Written and directed by Romero, Dawn of the Dead has the following synopsis: As hordes of zombies swarm over the U.S., the terrified populace tries everything in their power to escape the attack of the undead, but neither cities nor the countryside prove safe. In Pennsylvania, radio-station employee Stephen and his girlfriend, Francine, escape in the station helicopter, accompanied by two renegade SWAT members, Roger and Pete. The group retreats to the haven of an enclosed shopping center to make what could be humanity’s last stand.

The film stars Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, Gaylen Ross, David Emge (who, sadly, passed away last month), and Tom Savini.

Will you be requesting that your local theatre and/or drive-in book a 45th anniversary screening of Dawn of the Dead? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

A couple days ago, we shared a Squarespace Super Bowl commercial that stars legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese and his daughter Francesca, but that’s not the only commercial Scorsese has made for Squarespace this year. He has also made a short called Hello Down There, which is about aliens coming to visit Earth in a fleet of UFOs, for the company… and you can check it out in the embed at the bottom of this article! The extended version of Hello Down There in the embed has a running time of 96 seconds, but there’s also a version that has been cut down to 36 seconds.

Hello Down There has the following description: What does a highly advanced civilization have to do to get noticed around here? Watch the extended cut of Hello Down There, a tale of intergalactic outreach, directed by Martin Scorsese.

This commercial ties in with the other Scorsese one not only through the fact that it features an on screen appearance by Scorsese himself, but also because it deals with “intergalactic connection”. Apparently that’s what Squarespace is all about. If you’re not aware of what Squarespace is, here’s some information from Wikipedia: “Squarespace, Inc. is an American website building and hosting company based in New York City. It provides software as a service for website building and hosting, and allows users to use pre-built website templates and drag-and-drop elements to create and modify webpages.”

Do these Martin Scorsese commercials make you more inclined to turn to Squarespace for your website building and hosting needs? Take a look at Hello Down There, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

Scorsese has previously made commercials for the likes of American Express, Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Armani, Freixenet Cava Champagne, AT&T, Coca-Cola, Apple, and the Studio City Resort in Macau. His Squarespace commercials will be getting airing time during the Super Bowl this Sunday, February 11th. Then, when the Academy Awards ceremony is held on March 10th, we’ll see if Scorsese’s latest feature, Killers of the Flower Moon, is going to be an Oscar winner. It’s nominated in ten categories.
