Month: February 2024

Nine months ago, it was announced that Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man), Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), and Kaia Gerber (Babylon) had signed on to star in the “sexy psychological thriller” Shell, with Teen Spirit‘s Max Minghella directing from a screenplay written by Jack Stanley (Lou). Now production on Shell has just wrapped in Los Angeles, and along with the end of filming comes to the reveal that Moss, Hudson, and Gerber are joined in the cast by Arian Moayed (Succession), musician and composer Este Haim (Licorice Pizza), Lionel Boyce (The Bear), author/comedian Ziwe (ZIWE), Amy Landecker (Transparent), Peter MacNicol (Ally McBeal), Blake Lee (Cruel Summer), Dustin Milligan (Schitt’s Creek), Peri Gilpin (Frasier), and Mary Lynn Rajskub (24).

Shell is “set in a near future, when humanity’s cultural obsession with youth and beauty has been taken to new extremes“. Here’s the synopsis: Struggling actress Samantha (Elisabeth Moss) is given an opportunity to get a free trial at Shell, a pioneering health and beauty company which promises to keep its clients looking young forever. Samantha’s life and career is transformed by the treatment, and she develops a burgeoning friendship with Shell’s CEO, the ultra-glamorous Zoe Shannon (Kate Hudson). When a string of former Shell patients go missing under mysterious circumstances, including popular social media star Chloe Benson (Kaia Gerber), Samantha starts to fear she may be in danger herself.

Dark Castle Entertainment provided the financing for Shell. Elisabeth Moss and Lindsey McManus are producing Shell for Love & Squalor Pictures. Also producing the film are Range’s Fred Berger and Brian Kavanaugh, Blank Tape’s Max Minghella, Hal Sadoff and Norman Golightly of Dark Castle, and Alicia Van Couvering. Jamie Bell and Jack Stanley serve as executive producers. A press release informs us, “Black Bear is representing the international rights and will be distributing directly in the UK and Ireland. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent are co-repping the domestic rights.”

When the project was first announced, Minghella had this to say about it: “Shell packs a wildly entertaining genre movie with iconic characters and universal themes that are bound to have people talking long after they leave the theater. I’m so thrilled to be bringing it to life with this extraordinary cast and the incredible support of Black Bear International, Love & Squalor and Range.

Moss added: “This is one of the most unique, entertaining and special scripts I’ve ever read and I am so honored to be a part of it as an actor and flattered that Max came to me with this character, who’s unlike anyone I’ve ever played before. Having worked with Max for years on The Handmaid’s Tale, I’m so thrilled to now be directed by him as I’m a huge fan of his as a filmmaker. We at Love & Squalor are also excited to be working alongside Range and Black Bear, two companies we very much admire.

I haven’t seen Minghella’s feature directorial debut Teen Spirit, but the cast he has assembled for Shell is enough to sell me on his second feature. I look forward to seeing how this one has turned out.

Deadline reports that a sci-fi action movie called Osiris has flown under the radar all the way through production – an impressive feat, given that it happens to star Max Martini (Pacific Rim), Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool), LaMonica Garrett (1883), and Linda Hamilton (The Terminator). Apparently filming wrapped in New Orleans back at the end of last year. XYZ Films will be handling the worldwide distribution sales, and they have also unveiled a first look image, which you can check out at the bottom of this article.

Directed by William Kaufman (The Channel), who also wrote the screenplay with Paul Reichelt, Osiris tells the story of a team of Special Forces commandos who are in the middle of an operation when they’re abducted by a mysterious spacecraft. When they wake up aboard the ship, they quickly discover they are being hunted by a merciless alien race.

Martini is producing the film with Jon Wroblewski and Christian Sosa of Roosevelt Film Lab, as well as Andrew and Isaac Lewis of Denton Film. Reichelt serves as executive producer. The producers provided the following statement: “XYZ Films is the perfect partner who shares our sentiment for iconic alien thrillers much like we all grew up with, standing in line at the theaters to watch with state-of-the-art creature designs and visual effects that thrill audiences everywhere. We didn’t hold back our nostalgia for the genre, and teaming up again with Max Martini alongside the legendary Linda Hamilton was a huge gift for this movie. We can’t wait to show the world and wrap post-production this spring.

As Deadline points out, this is the first movie Linda Hamilton has worked on in the five years since the release of Terminator: Dark Fate. She has been working in TV since then, and next up for her is a role in the fifth and final season of the Netflix series Stranger Things, which is now filming.

Does Osiris sound interesting to you? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

I was sold on this project as soon as I read that it was about these cast members being abducted by and having to battle aliens.

Wonder Man, Marvel Studios, Yahya Abdul Mateen II

An awful accident resulting in the death of a crew member has hit the production of the Marvel Studios series Wonder Man. According to Deadline, a rigger working at CBS Redford Studios fell off the rafters this morning and sadly passed away. The individual was not filming then, and an investigation is forthcoming.

A Marvel spokesperson for the Wonder Man production shared a statement on the studio’s behalf: “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends, and our support is behind the investigation into the circumstances of this accident.”

Wonder Man stars Yahya Abdul Mateen II (AquamanCandyman) as Simon Williams, aka Wonder Man. Lauren Glazier (MindhunterGone GirlTales of the Walking Dead), Sir Ben Kingsley (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsIron Man 3), and Stella Meghie (The PhotographThe Weekend) also star.

Wonder Man is one of Marvel’s oldest characters, dating back to 1964 in the pages of Avengers #9. He began his comic book career as a villain but got reintroduced as a hero in the late 1970s. Wonder Man’s civilian name is Simon Williams, and he was a founding member of the Los Angeles-based West Coast Avengers. As an actor and stuntman, Williams’ look included wearing a turtleneck, a red jacket, and sunglasses. Wonder Man strongly relates to Marvel characters Vision and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. The trio shared several adventures, with Wonder Man and Vision thinking of each other as brothers in action. After Vision was dismantled, the villain-turned-hero developed intense feelings for Wanda.

Marvel could take Wonder Man in several directions, given that he’s a relatively unknown character. Will they treat him like a brand-new hero or slide him into place alongside Wanda after the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? Could it be Wonder Man who eventually frees Wanda from her self-inflicted incarceration? We’ll need to wait and see. According to Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen, she’s enjoyed her time as the character but is looking to move on from Marvel. Could Marvel convince her to return for Wonder Man or some other superhero-related project? Your guess is as good as ours.

We want to express our condolences to the crew member’s family, friends, and co-workers. Please be careful as production for Wonder Man continues, and take care of one another.

Buckle up and get ready to hit the road with two young women who’ve stumbled upon a mysterious briefcase full of trouble! A new Drive-Away Dolls trailer is barreling down the information highway today, with plenty of kooky characters hitchhiking aboard the new comedy co-written by husband and wife duo Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke.

The Ethan Coen-directed comedy revolves around Jamie (Margaret Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her timid friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.

Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp, and Matt Damon join Qualley and Viswanathan for Coen and Cooke’s unique crime caper, with Focus Features handling domestic distribution. Meanwhile, Universal Pictures will bring the film overseas. Robert Graf, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner join Coen and Cooke as producers.

In the new Drive-Away Dolls trailer, Jamie and Marian discover a mysterious briefcase in the trunk of a beat-up car, changing their lives forever. Knowing the contents of the suitcase could invite trouble; they look anyway, better judgment be damned! Unaware of the Pandora’s box they’ve opened, the girls quickly find themselves in a madcap chase for possession of the stolen goods. Elsewhere, the dealer, hitmen, a senator, the boss, and a cop get wind of the mayhem, with none of them safe from bullets, buffoonery, or backstabbing.

Margaret Qualley plays Pussycat in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. Still, her role as Ann Reinking in Fosse/Verdon put her on the map. She’s starred in several films and TV series since, with her role as Alex Russell in Maid being one of her best yet. In 2022, she played Trish in Stars at Noon and Rebecca in Zachary Wigon’s dramatic thriller Sanctuary.

Meanwhile, Viswanathan made her mark in 2018’s Blockers, the Kay Canon-directed comedy starring John Cena, Leslie Mann, and Ike Barinholtz. She’s starred in several films and television shows since, including a 23-episode run on the TBS comedy Miracle Workers as Alexandra Shitshoveler, Prudence Aberdeen, and Eliza Freya Exaltada.

After getting bumped around because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA stikes, Drive-Away Dolls pulls into theaters on February 23, 2024.

Despite no longer being a part of Yellowstone’s next season, Kevin Costner seems to be busier than ever. First up, he’s got a two-part Western epic called Horizon: An American Saga that’s coming out this summer (Chapter 1 comes out June 28th, Chapter 2 on August 16th), and now, Deadline is reporting that the actor’s got another “longtime passion project” ready to roll. While there are no specifics on what it may be, Costner is set to produce and star in the untitled film, with the director of his 2016 thriller Criminal, Ariel Vromen, at the helm.

In the article, no specifics are given, although Costner has been open about certain long-planned projects in the past. One is his book, The Explorer’s Guild, which he wrote with his Horizon collaborator Jon Baird and was called an Indiana Jones-style globetrotting adventure. It could be anything, although given Vromen’s track record, which includes based-on-fact thrillers, The Iceman (with Michael Shannon) and Netflix’s The Angel, we’re thinking it might be something less fantastical and more reality-based, perhaps even in the vein of his JFK (we recently revisited that Oliver Stone classic) or Thirteen Days?

If you haven’t seen it, Vromen’s Criminal is a pretty wild movie. In it, Costner plays a killer who is implanted with the memories of a dead spy (played by Ryan Reynolds), and I remember it being a cool little action movie that not too many people saw. This was a shame as it reteamed Costner for the first time with two of his JFK co-stars, Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones. Vromen’s The Iceman is also worth checking out, with Michael Shannon delivering a menacing performance as real-life mob hitman Richard Kuklinski, who claimed to have murdered anywhere from 100-200 men for the mob.

While I wish he’d agree to tie up his arc as John Dutton on the ever-popular Yellowstone, it’s good to hear Costner is staying busy. Hopefully, his upcoming passion projects live up to his expectations.
