Month: February 2024

Producer Jason Blum had said the Paranormal Activity franchise went dormant for a while after the release of 2015’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension because he felt the series had gotten tired – and it wasn’t his idea to make Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, a failed attempt at a revival (that he described as “terrible”), back in 2021. He has been open about the fact that he feels there has been “enough already” when it comes to Paranormal Activity movies. But that doesn’t mean the franchise can’t continue in other ways. A few months back, we heard there’s a stage play in development, and now Variety has broken the news that a Paranormal Activity video game will be released in 2026!

A collaboration between Paramount Game Studios and DreadXP, the publisher of the hit horror game The Mortuary Assistant, the Paranormal Activity video game will “bring the franchise’s groundbreaking found-footage style to horror enthusiasts in surprising new ways, immersing them in a story that expands upon the lore and world of the films.” The game will be available across multiple platforms and will include “an advanced version of the Haunt System that will dynamically alter the types and intensity of scares players will encounter based on their actions.” Development is being headed up by DreadXP co-director and creative director Brian Clarke (DarkStone Digital), who was also the main developer on The Mortuary Assistant.

Epic Pictures CEO and DreadXP producer Patrick Ewald provided the following statement: “We are thrilled to work with Paramount Game Studios and to have the opportunity to bring the world of Paranormal Activity to gamers everywhere. The films are steeped in rich lore and creative scares, and under the stewardship of creative director Brian Clarke, DreadXP’s Paranormal Activity video game will honor those core tenets and offer horror fans one of our most terrifying games yet.

Clarke added: “The success of the Paranormal Activity franchise epitomizes the power and reach of the horror genre. If you thought The Mortuary Assistant was scary, we’re taking what we learned during the development of that title and cranking it up with a more reactive and horrifying haunting system. It’s going to be intense!

I can’t say the idea of a Paranormal Activity video game gets me as hyped as I was when I heard there was going to be a Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or Killer Klowns from Outer Space video game, but it could be interesting.

Would you play a Paranormal Activity video game? Let us know by leaving a comment.

Here’s a teaser for the game:

Coppola AMA

If you could sit down with Francis Ford Coppola – one of the greatest titans and entrepreneurs in movie history – what would you ask him? His best advice for a young filmmaker? His favorite movies? Perhaps his go-to ice cream flavor? Well, the director had all that and more to share during a recent Instagram AMA session; yes, Coppola has Instagram, and yes, you can ask him anything.

First and foremost, during the AMA, Coppola was asked what his favorite movies of his daughter Sofia’s were, in which he rattled off her debut, 1999’s Virgin Suicides, 2003’s Lost in Translation, 2006’s Marie Antoinette, and 2010’s Somewhere. That’s half of her filmography – Francis is such a dad! As for his own pictures, Coppola didn’t cite The Godfather or Apocalypse Now or Jack but rather 1983’s Rumble Fish, his second S.E. Hinton movie after The Outsiders (also out in ‘83). As for other directors’ works, he chose Eraserhead and The Elephant Man as his favorite of David Lynch’s.

Francis Ford Coppola also used his AMA time to give some advice on filmmaking, such as informing aspiring directors to do the research and write about what they love. Coppola is certainly taking his own advice, finally moving forward with his long-gestating passion project Megalopolis, which has a massive cast that includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, and so, so many more. Coppola even had thoughts on the casting process as a whole, saying, “I never make detailed notes, because the type of person who “sticks in your mind” has that unique ingredient, which also sticks in the audience’s mind.”

While Coppola didn’t appear to stick around all that long for his AMA session, it is pretty amazing to see the 84-year-old embracing social media and his fanbase (now, if we can just get him on Letterboxd). After all, how else would we know that the maestro loves him some pistachio ice cream?

Coppola hasn’t released a movie since 2011’s Twixt, only adding to the anticipation of Megalopolis. Coppola described the film as such: “It’s a love story…A woman is divided between loyalties to two men. But not only two men. Each man comes with a philosophical principle. One is her father who raised her, who taught her Latin on his lap and is devoted to a much more classical view of society, the Marcus Aurelius kind of view…The other one, who is the lover, is the enemy of the father but is dedicated to a much more progressive ‘Let’s leap into the future, let’s leap over all of this garbage that has contaminated humanity for 10,000 years. Let’s find what we really are, which are an enlightened, friendly, joyous species.’”

The Department, Michael Fassbender, George Clooney

The Killer and Prometheus star Michael Fassbender could go behind enemy lines for The Department, a forthcoming espionage thriller series with George Clooney (The Boys in the Boat) at the helm. With Clooney in the director’s chair, filming for The Department kicks off in London this spring. The project, which has a straight-to-series order by Showtime, is based on “The Bureau,” the hit French spy show created by Eric Rochant. In addition to his role as the project’s director, Clooney is producing alongside Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures, MTV Entertainment Studios, and 101 Studios.

The original French show starred the “bureau des légendes,” Matthieu Kassovitz as Guillaume Debailly — alias Paul Lefebvre, alias Malotru – a member of the “bureau des légendes,” the mythical powerhouse within the French Secret Service and its daredevil ghost agents. Malotru returns home after completing a six-year mission in Damascus. While struggling to retire his false identity and heated relationship with a Syrian woman, Malotru attempts to balance a double-agent game between the French Secret Services (DGSE) and the CIA.

Praised for exploring the psychology associated with covert agents and their ability to straddle double lives, The Bureau is known for keeping its finger on the pulse of geopolitical affairs, never shying away from hot-button topics or societal divides.

Michael Fassbender recently starred in David Fincher’s The Killer, focusing on an assassin who, after a near-miss, battles his employers and himself during an international manhunt. Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, and Kerry O’Malley star alongside Fassbender as primary cast members. After The Killer, Fassbender starred in Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins, telling the story of the infamously terrible American Samoa soccer team, known for a brutal 2001 FIFA match they lost 31-0.

According to IMDBKung Fury 2 is in post-production, but I’ll believe it when I see a trailer. The sequel, starring Michael Fassbender, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Alexandra Shipp, David Sandberg, David Hasselhoff, and more, focuses on Kung Fury’s universe with no real connection to the short movie other than the lead character.

What do you think about Michael Fassbender and George Clooney teaming up for The Department? Do you like it when Clooney directs, or would you rather see him in front of the camera? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
