Month: February 2024

In the early days of January, Universal Pictures closed the first major Hollywood deal of 2024 by pre-emptively purchasing the short story package Long Lost, with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners producing alongside Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon of Genre Pictures, as well as Scott Glassgold of Ground Control Entertainment. Colin Bannon, who previously wrote and directed the 2009 comedy Love Conquers Paul, is on board to write the screenplay adaptation of his own 50 page short story, which is said to be “in the vein of What Lies Beneath and Rosemary’s Baby“. Now Deadline reports that Universal has scored another Colin Bannon deal, pre-emptively purchasing his short story thriller package Don’t Look, with Janelle Monáe in talks to star and M3GAN, Malignant, and The Nun 2 writer Akela Cooper writing the screenplay, based on an unpublished Bannon short story.

How does the maker of a little-seen indie from 15 years ago land deals like this? Well, in addition to making Love Conquers Paul, Bannon has also gotten his scripts featured on the Black List a record seven times. Deadline notes that he has “sold the survival thriller Ultra (about an ultra marathon runner involved in a deadly race) to Tri-Star Pictures and genre spec First Ascent (set in the world of mountain climbing) to Netflix. His psychological thriller Holdout (about a woman who refuses to leave her house during a hurricane) is readying at Netflix, with Elisabeth Moss attached to star and direct.”

In addition to starring in Don’t Look, Monáe will also be producing the film through her Wondaland Pictures’ first-look deal with Universal Pictures, along with Scott Glassgold’s Ground Control. Universal’s SVP Production Development Ryan Jones and Director of Development Tony Ducret are overseeing the project for the studio.

Monáe’s previous acting credits include Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Welcome to Marwen, Harriet, Rio 2, Lady and the Tramp, The Glorias, Antebellum, and Glass Onion. She is also a singer/songwriter with four studio albums to her name: The ArchAndroid, The Electric Lady, Dirty Computer, and The Age of Pleasure.

A few years ago, we heard that Lionsgate was developing TV shows based on American Psycho and the Saw franchise. Obviously those projects didn’t go anywhere, as Saw has since been revived with the film Saw X and now industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider is reporting that Lionsgate has decided to revive American Psycho not with a TV show, but with a remake. In the same report, Sneider reveals that It producer Roy Lee is also developing a new version of a different Stephen King story, The Dead Zone.

Based on a novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the 2000 version of American Psycho was directed by Mary Harron, who also wrote the screenplay with Guinevere Turner. The film has the following synopsis: Patrick Bateman is a young, handsome, Harvard educated Wall Street success, seemingly perfect with his stunning fiancé and entourage of high-powered friends. But his circle of friends doesn’t know the other Patrick Bateman, the one who lusts for more than status and material things. With a detective hot on his trail and temptation everywhere, Patrick Bateman can’t fight his terrible urges that take him on the pursuit of women, greed and the ultimate crime – murder! Based on the controversial book by Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho is a sexy thriller that sets forth a vision that is both terrifying and chilling.

According to Sneider (with thanks to Dark Horizons for sharing the information), Lionsgate is looking for a writer who can update American Psycho for the modern age and offer their own take on the Patrick Bateman character.

The Stephen King novel The Dead Zone has previously inspired a 1983 film that was directed by David Cronenberg and a TV series that ran on USA Network for six seasons. Here’s the story: When Johnny Smith awakens from a coma caused by a car accident, he finds that years have passed, and he now has psychic abilities. Heartbroken that his girlfriend has moved on with her life, Johnny also must contend with his unsettling powers, which allow him to see a person’s future with a mere touch. After shaking the hand of aspiring politician Greg Stillson, Johnny sees the danger presented by the candidate’s rise and resolves to kill him.

Lee is currently searching for a writer with an interesting take on the concept.

When something works, it’s natural to try to duplicate the success. The romantic comedy Anyone But You‘s success somewhat flew under the radar, but in a good victory for mid-budget movies, the movie made a record-breaking $200 million worldwide. Additionally, both of the film’s stars’ careers are taking with upcoming projects. Glen Powell will be appearing in this summer’s Twisters, and Sydney Sweeney will be starring in next month’s horror flick, Immaculate. However, just like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan or Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, Powell and Sweeney know you can never have too much of a good thing.

Powell spoke with Variety’s Senior Culture and Events Editor Marc Malkin at the SAG Awards on Saturday night. The Top Gun: Maverick star revealed that he and his Anyone But You co-star are currently sifting through scripts looking for their next big project. Powell explained, “When you find somebody that you really jive with, Sydney is so easy to work with and so fun. We’re definitely trying to find the next thing. Please send us all the scripts you got. You know we’re here for it. It’s been really wonderful to read a lot. Sydney reads everything, by the way, and in record time. She’s the fastest reader I think I’ve ever met. It takes me a little longer, but we’re reading everything and just trying to see what makes sense, what we can turn into something that audiences are going to respond to.”

Meanwhile, Powell is talking up the spiritual sequel to Twister, which he stars in with Daisy Edgar-Jones. Powell’s Top Gun: Maverick director, Joseph Kosinski, was developing the project when Powell came across it. Kosinski was originally on board to direct, but Minari‘s Lee Issac Chung has since taken up the director’s seat. Powell says, “[I] met with Lee Isaac Chung and met with Daisy Edgar-Jones and had a great chemistry with Daisy and she’s sensational and we just have such a great vibe in this movie. The movie, just the texture of it, the fun of it, the world, it’s going to be a ride. It’s really good. It’s nuts.”
