Martin Scorsese recently spoke at the Berlin Film Festival, where he discussed his upcoming movie chronicling the life of Jesus Christ.

The Jesus Christ movie could be Martin Scorsese’s next project, but the director is still in the process of figuring it out. “I’m contemplating it right now,” Scorsese said. “What kind of film I’m not quite sure, but I want to make something unique and different that could be thought-provoking and I hope also entertaining. I’m not quite sure yet how to go about it.“

Once the awards tour for Killers of the Flower Moon is behind him, Scorsese hopes to resume work on the project. “Maybe I’ll get some sleep and then wake up and I’ll have this fresh idea of how to do it,” he said. While it seems like there’s still a lot to do before the project moves forward, the film is expected to be based on Shūsaku Endō’s book A Life of Jesus, who also wrote the novel on which Silence was based.

Speaking of Silence, it was that film which put Scorsese in touch with Pope Francis, which sparked a desire to make another movie about Jesus. “That was viewed by the Vatican and so I met the Pope a couple of times based on that and at one point in a meeting he also talked about fresher ways of thinking about of Christianity, the essentials of it,” Scorsese said. “I’m always interested in that.“

The last time Martin Scorsese tackled Jesus Christ, he was the focus of a large amount of outrage. The Last Temptation of Christ starred Willem Dafoe as Christ, who found himself struggling with various forms of temptation, including lust, fear, and doubt. As a result, it came under fire from Christian groups, who went so far as to claim the movie was blasphemy.

With this film, the director has previously said that he hopes to make religion a little more accessible. “I’m trying to find a new way to make it more accessible and take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organized religion,” Scorsese said. “Right now, ‘religion,’ you say that word and everyone is up in arms because it’s failed in so many ways. But that doesn’t mean necessarily that the initial impulse was wrong. Let’s get back. Let’s just think about it. You may reject it. But it might make a difference in how you live your life — even in rejecting it. Don’t dismiss it offhand. That’s all I’m talking about. And I’m saying that as a person who’s going to be 81 in a couple of days. You know what I’m saying?“

We’ve been keeping an eye on the progress of writer/director Craig Rees’ film Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge, which puts a horror thriller twist on a classic children’s story, ever since it was first announced several months ago. We still don’t know of a release date for this one, but there is a positive update to share, as Variety has reported that international sales company Iuvit Media Sales has secured distribution deals for Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge in multiple territories while presenting it to potential buyers at the European Film Market. Buyers include Gussi Films for Latin America, Pioneer for the Philippines, and Front Row for the Middle East.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge has a short and simple synopsis: Never enter into someone’s house without permission. Variety has another synopsis: Goldilocks and the three bears live together in an isolated house in the woods. When a group of friends enter their home, Goldilocks, leader of the bears’ pack, decides to get rid of the intruders. Rees has compared the film to movies like The Strangers and The Purge.

Most of us already know the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. A young girl called Goldilocks wanders into a house in the woods, helps herself to some porridge, sits in the chairs, tries out the beds. Then the home’s inhabitants – a family of bears – get home and chase her away. As the Variety synopsis gives away, Death and Porridge switches things around by following a group of characters who settle into a home in the woods… then four people (three wearing bear masks, one wearing a Goldilocks mask) show up to give them grief.

Olha Solomakhina (To Happiness) stars as Goldilocks and is joined in the cast by Julian Amos (Get Millie Black), FlexSingh (Tough World), Jimmy Roberts (Once Upon a Time in Frickley), and newcomers Abigail Huxley and Susan Franks, with Robson Medler (In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats) as Daddy Bear, newcomer Jack Barry as Mama Bear, and special makeup effects artist Grace Darling Smith as Baby Bear.

Iuvit said that with this movie, “a growing suspense drives the audience from a contained thriller to an authentic slasher.” They attributed the fact that fairy tales are inspiring so many horror movies these days to directors like Rees seeing “the value of adapting these tales for horror fans, who are responding in numbers at the respective theatrical releases, to experience in full the slasher experience, with an honest and entertaining horror tale.“

Disney is handing Sony the reins of its physical media business over after striking a deal to outsource most of its home entertainment division. According to the agreement, Sony Pictures Entertainment will manufacture, distribute, and market Disney’s DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and other physical media. The pact includes plans to distribute all Disney’s new releases and catalog titles on physical media to audiences, retailers, and distributors in the United States and Canada. Disney’s digital media arm remains untouched after the deal, with the company maintaining control over its streaming platform, Disney+, and premium video-on-demand releases.

Disney won’t say if the pact will result in layoffs, though an internal investigation into the studio’s physical media divisions and functions is forthcoming. Layoffs have hit the entertainment industry hard in a post-pandemic arena, with video game developers laying off thousands of workers in 2024 alone. Disney recently invested $1.5B in Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, to build a new social gaming space alongside plans to “interoperate” Disney intellectual properties with the always-online multiplayer shooter Fortnite.

Physical media sales like DVDs and Blu-rays have declined for quite some time, with hardcore collectors keeping hope alive one disc purchase at a time. According to data from trade association DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group, revenue for physical media in the U.S. dropped 28%, to $754 million in the first half of 2023, compared with $1.05 billion in the prior year.

The decline in physical media sales has prompted retail outlets like Best Buy to discontinue sales of Blu-rays and DVDs in their brick-and-mortar stores and online. Mail-in DVD and Blu-ray services are also going the way of the dodo, painting a grim future for consumers who wish to add their favorite films to a shelf.

The future of DVDs and Blu-rays remains to be determined. It will be interesting to see if handing responsibility over to Sony yields positive results for Disney or if this is simply a way to avoid dealing with a dying form of media.

Emma Stone first worked with director Yorgos Lanthimos on his 2018 film The Favourite – which went on to rack up ten Oscar nominations, including one for Stone’s performance in her Supporting Role. (The film’s one Oscar win went to Olivia Colman for her Leading Role performance.) Stone and Lanthimos re-teamed on the short film Bleat in 2022, then made the feature Poor Things together. That one has been nominated for is nominated for eleven Oscars, including one for Stone in her Leading Role. While we wait to find out whether or not Poor Things is going to win any Academy Awards, Variety reports that Stone is now in talks to join the cast of the latest Lanthimos project: an English language remake of the 2003 South Korean cult film Save the Green Planet.

Almost four years have gone by since it was announced that CJ ENM, the production company behind Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, was teaming with Ari Aster’s Square Peg to produce the Save the Green Planet remake. The original film was directed by Joon-hwan Jang, and at the time it was said that Jang would be at the helm of the new take on the concept as well, but it was announced just yesterday that Lanthimos will be taking the helm. With Lanthimos signed on, the Save the Green Planet remake is now expected to head into production this summer, with filming locations in New York and the U.K.

Described as an eccentric black comedy, the original Save the Green Planet followed a disillusioned young man who captures and tortures a businessman whom he believes to be part of an alien invasion. A battle of wits ensues between the captor, his devoted girlfriend, the businessman and a private detective.

Here’s a longer synopsis: Joon-hwan Jang imagines the fate of the human race hinging on Byun-gu, a bitter, paranoid and eccentric beekeeper who, with the help of his tightrope walker girlfriend, Sooni, kidnaps a powerful and successful businessman, Man-sik. Byun-gu believes that Man-sik is an alien from the planet Andromeda, one of many hiding among us and plotting to destroy the Earth in a few days. Amphetamine-popping Byun-gu sees himself as the planet’s last hope, and sets about torturing Man-sik with relish, trying to convince him to contact the “Royal Prince” and call off Armageddon. A battle of wits and wills ensues, with Man-sik trying to convince his captors that he’s human and attempting to escape. Man-sik recognizes Byun-gu as a disgruntled former employee whose comatose mother suffers from a mysterious illness. It begins to seem that Byun-gu’s true motivation may be personal, but he’s still ruthlessly determined to get Man-sik to confess and cooperate, even if he has to risk killing him. Meanwhile, a dishevelled detective, Chu, and his young acolyte, Inspector Kim, discover that the person who kidnapped Man-sik may have struck several times before, always with deadly results.

When the Save the Green Planet remake was first announced, it was said that the screenplay was being written by Will Tracy, a writer on HBO’s Succession and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Since that announcement, Tracy has also co-written the genre film The Menu.

Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe at Element Pictures are producing the new film alongside CJ ENM and Square Peg.

Variety says that Stone would most likely play a supporting role in the Save the Green Planet remake. Going by the synopses, it sounds like the role of the devoted, tightrope-walking girlfriend would be a good one for her.

We’ve been tracking the progress of the upcoming Killer Klowns from Outer Space video game since it was first announced a couple years ago. Several months ago, we learned that IllFonic had replaced Good Shepherd Entertainment as the publisher of the game and were co-developing it with Teravision Games. Now, it has been revealed that the wait for the game is almost over! Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game will be released for PC, Playstation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on June 4th.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (the movie) was directed by Stephen Chiodo from a screenplay he wrote with his brother Charles Chiodo. Stephen and Charles also produced the film with their other brother, Edward Chiodo. It has the following synopsis: When teenagers Mike and Debbie see a comet crash outside their sleepy small town, they investigate and discover a pack of murderous aliens who look very much like circus clowns. They try to warn the local authorities, but everyone assumes their story is a prank. Meanwhile, the clowns set about harvesting and eating as many people as they can. It’s not until they kidnap Debbie that Mike decides it’s up to him to stop the clowns’ bloody rampage.

Here’s the information on the video game: Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game is a crazy, fresh take on asymmetrical survival horror experience. If you weren’t already hyped up enough for Dune: Part Two, co-star Josh Brolin (Gurney Halleck) has just about the most wild pitch to get you into theaters. And it involves Elvis, a sexy cyborg and everyone’s favorite chocolatier.

Taking to Instagram ahead of Dune: Part Two’s March 1st wide release, Brolin offered the following take on the highly anticipated sequel, rattling off a fever dream that plays off of the cast’s most famous characters and Zendaya’s eye-catching outfit from the movie’s premiere.

“DUNE 2 release is less than TWO WEEKS!!! Robot Lady and Wonka fall in love. Then Elvis tries to fuck it all up while his bad dad floats in a pool of pond scum. The WWE dude from Gardians gets super pissed while Midsomer hottie puts the eyes on Wonka Obi Wan just after his Mom gets caught taking LSD in a sandy bathroom. Chigurh still doesnt like the guy from The Goonies. I mean who doesn’t want to see all that on IMAX??? The pandemic is over. Strikes have come and gone. Fuck it. It’s time to commune again and experience that amazing feeling of when the lights go down, you have your hand deep in your Popcorn worm, and DUNE 2 consumes you. HAVE FUN.”

Early reactions for Dune: Part Two have been strong even without Brolin’s spin, but he no doubt has added to the anticipation. Sure, it’s not actually Willy Wonka on a desert planet or Anton Chigurgh clashing with the older Walsh brother or Batista delivering a Batista Bomb to Florence Pugh, but that is one hell of a way to imagine the movie. And now we can’t help but picture this Super Smash Bros.-esque spin on the plot.

Here is perhaps a more accurate and grounded – that is, anti-Josh Brolin – description of Dune: Part Two: “[The film will] explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a path of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”

How are you now? Letterkenny and The Changeling actor Clark Backo is ready to swing alongside Venom in the character’s forthcoming sequel, Venom 3. Hoping to take a big bite out of the box office on November 8, Sony‘s Venom 3 stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, aka Venom, alongside Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor in roles that remain a mystery. Backo’s role is also under wraps, so let the speculation begin!

In the Great White North, Clark Backo is famous for playing Rosie in the Canadian sitcom Letterkenny. Introduced in the sophomore season of Letterkenny, Rosie is Gail’s cousin and Wayne’s (Jared Keeso) on-and-off partner for most of the 12-season series. The Canadian-Cameroonian actress also stars in The Changeling opposite LaKeith Stanfield. Backo plays Emma in the Apple TV+ limited series, the wife of Stanfield’s Apollo and the new mother who vanishes without explanation.

Kelly Marcel is the third director to helm a movie in Sony’s Venom franchise after Ruben Fleischer (Venom) and Andy Serkis (Venom: Let There Be Carnage). Reports indicate Marcel has a great working relationship with Hardy, and the duo has plenty of great ideas for Venom 3. Both creatives have been driving forces in bringing Venom’s adventures to screens, not to mention securing boatloads of cash for Sony and Marvel.

Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage earned $1.36 billion worldwide. Sony’s Spider-Verse could use a handful of Venom dollars after Morbius and Madame Web failed to connect with audiences. Son’y’s Spider-Man-less Spider-Verse is in rough shape, especially with Sony likely to scrap plans for a Madame Web franchise after the film’s dismal box office launch. Thankfully, there’s something about Tom Hardy’s Venom films that puts asses in seats, whether it’s Hardy and the symbiote’s Odd Couple chemistry or the franchise’s off-the-wall comic book-inspired action.

Part of Venom‘s success lies in the idea that the movies don’t take themselves too seriously. They’re not going to set the world on fire, but they’re harmless fun, and Hardy always gives his all to the character.
