Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's 28 Days Later sequel 28 Years Later (and another sequel beyond that) acquired by Sony

If you have Hulu (or Disney Star in Canada), you might have noticed that Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later is no longer available. Indeed, Disney lost the rights to the independently financed original film, with them now only owning the rights to the Searchlight-financed sequel, 28 Weeks Later. That’s why you can’t find it on streaming sites and why the Blu-ray Disc is out of print. Sony now owns the rights to the film, with it being part of the package they acquired when they bought the rights to finance the upcoming Danny Boyle/ Alex Garland sequel, 28 Years Later.

So, presumably, Sony will be reissuing the film in the near future, and there’s a chance that when they do, it’ll look much better than it ever did before. You see, 28 Days Later was one of the first films to be shot digitally. Indeed, the camera it was shot on, the Cannon XL-1, has a standard definition resolution of 720×576. That’s why the movie looks pretty much the same on DVD as on Blu-ray, as you’re just watching an upconversion. As for a 4K release, the fact is 28 Days Later is never going to look as good as some horror fans might expect. It was shot to look a certain way. But I do feel that Sony, with Boyle and Alex Garland and the original DP Anthony Dod Mantle, might be working on a restoration to improve how the film looks on digital media. Granted, this is pure speculation, but technology has come a long way, and there’s the potential for a restoration of 28 Days Later to look significantly different once it comes out.

That said, should it look different?

Here’s the thing – these movies that were shot in early digital video have been problematic in their transfer to 1080p, never mind 4K. For their release of Spike Lee’s Bamboozled on Blu-ray, Criterion was able to tweak the movie’s look in a way that was faithful to the original version but still made it look better than it ever did on DVD before. Sony will likely use some magic to make 28 Days Later look significantly different than it ever has before.

But is that a good thing?

Given how the movie’s look compliments its tone, perhaps they’ll put out two versions, one restored and one unrestored. Whatever happens to the film will be with likely be with Danny Boyle’s full approval. Still, I think when it finally comes back out, it will spot a controversial but possibly revelatory new look.

Do you think they should tweak the way 28 Days Later looks? Or should they just leave well enough alone? Let us know in the comments.

He’s just Sly? Sylvester Stallone not only has some surprising ties to last year’s mega-hit Barbie but thinks that one of its stars could be the one to play John Rambo if the series were to ever continue with Sly. Stallone has indeed said he is done playing the character, but could Ryan Gosling handle it?

Speaking with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Sylvester Stallone remembered having dinner with Ryan Gosling, in which the Oscar-nominated Barbie star gushed over just how much he loves John Rambo. “He goes, ‘I was fascinated by Rambo, and I used to go to school dressed as Rambo, and people would chase me away, but I still didn’t stop. And, I, you know, vacation as Rambo.’ He just kept saying he had a lot of affiliation with Rambo…And I thought, you know, this is interesting. If I ever pass the baton, I’ll pass it to him.” But Stallone wasn’t oblivious to just how opposite he and Gosling are, adding, “He’s good-looking, I’m not. That’s how it works…”

This tied directly into Stallone’s links to Barbie, a far cry from any Rambo entry. As it turns out, Sly was a direct inspiration for one of Ken’s outfits: his white fur coat, as Stallone once took quite fondly to them. Stallone was even asked to be in the movie but couldn’t appear due to commitments on Paramount+’s Tulsa King. “Can you imagine me as Ken?…That doesn’t work at all.”

While Stallone also expressed a little concern that Ryan Gosling might be a little too handsome to play John Rambo, he has remained steady on this pick, even saying as far back as 2015 – four years before Sly led his final go as the character in Last Blood – that Gosling is the guy.

Gosling as Rambo is definitely a hot take from Stallone; then again, he is a fantastic actor, so it’s possible that Gosling would be able to channel the intensity Sly had in the first Rambo film, First Blood.

Do you think Ryan Gosling could handle the role of John Rambo or should he be retired with Sylvester Stallone? Give us your thoughts on Sly’s dream casting below!

The first trailer for the upcoming non-sequel Twisters has arrived, taking the Super Bowl by storm during its debut.

After a brief teaser during Super Bowl LVIII, the Twisters trailer hit the web, with the ominous warning that, “Whatever’s in there, it’s big and it’s moving fast.” We then get a hype call and response of, “If you’re feelin’ it” … “Chase it!” – which we have to admit would make a great tagline! The action only amplifies, with the warning that the team will be facing off against twin twisters, hence the movie’s title.

But lest you think this is a direct sequel to 1996’s Oscar-nominated Twister, you’ll notice that none of the surviving original cast members – Helen Hunt, Cary Elwes, Jami Gertz, and more (sadly, both Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman had untimely deaths) – were featured. That’s because Universal’s Twisters doesn’t rely as much on the original as you’d think, instead hoping to map its own course. Still, there are a couple of callbacks to the 1996 movie, as the “We’ve got twins!” line comes off as a nod to “We got cows!”. There, too, is a version of Dorothy, the sensor-holding capsule seen in the original.

As star Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) previously noted, Twisters is “definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day. I don’t think anyone has brought up [Twister] in forever, but talking to people, they’re like, ‘That was one of my favorite movies growing up. That movie terrified me.”

In addition to Powell, Twisters has a surprisingly strong cast that includes Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People), Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), Brandon Perea (Nope), David Corenswet (set to play Clark Kent / Superman for DC), and Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina).

Twisters is directed by Minari’s Lee Isaac Chung and written by Mark L. Smith, who most recently wrote George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat, in addition to The Revenant. Twisters comes to theaters on July 19th.

What did you think of the first trailer for Twisters? Can it stand on its own despite its ties to the 1996 movie? Give us your take in the comments section below!

Twisters

While I think Super Bowl viewers were probably counting the minutes until the release of the Deadpool and Wolverine trailer, two other colossal budget franchise flicks made their presence known with two pretty slick trailers. First up is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes by Wes Ball. It’s 20th Century Studios’ ambitious attempt to relaunch the classic Planet of the Apes franchise, and the second trailer doubles down on the impressive first trailer with loads of new footage. It has more action and a closer look at the human characters, including one played by The Witcher’s Freya Allan. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on May 10th.

Here’s the trailer:

Yet, just as eagerly anticipated (by some) is Universal’s first look at Jon Chu’s Wicked: Part I. This long-awaited adaptation of the iconic Broadway play, which retells The Wizard of Oz from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West, also made its debut. I saw footage from this movie just under a year ago at CinemaCon in Vegas, and Universal is betting big on this two-part Broadway adaptation. The trailer introduces us to Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, who will later become the Wicked Witch of the West and Ariana Grande’s Glinda the Good. Wicked: Part I hits theaters on November 27th, with Part II making its debut exactly one year later, on November 26th, 2025.

Here’s the trailer:

In the meantime, here are some Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes character posters:

“You’re still here? It’s over. Go home! Oh, you’re expecting a trailer for Deadpool 3?” Then you’re in luck because the much-anticipated look at Deadpool 3 – officially titled Deadpool & Wolverine – has arrived after a brief tease during Super Bowl LVIII. We all know that the Super Bowl is a premiere spot to debut movie trailers and we figured that Deadpool 3 would be one of the most anticipated; we have to say that it most definitely lived up to the hype.

Ahead of the official trailer release for Deadpool 3, the Merc with a Mouth introduced a brief teaser that warned, “Your little cinema universe is about to change forever”, before adding that Deadpool and Wolverine together “just feels right! Now, onto the trailer. Here, we see Wade Wilson celebrating his birthday and blowing out the candles, then launching into a meta wink at Disney’s acquisition of Marvel and, thus, Deadpool aka “Marvel Jesus”. The trailer then goes on to be an action- and humor-packed barrage in just the sort of fashion we all wanted.

Deadpool 3 has fallen victim to leaks as of late, so it’s great that this particular promotional piece made it to the Super Bowl unscathed. Star Ryan Reynolds has been doing a bit of cleanup work in that regard, too, taking to social media with his own “leaks” that simultaneously have fun with the production and mock the very idea of leaking.

Much speculation was made regarding Taylor Swift potentially turning up in Deadpool 3. On this, director Shawn Levy said, “[Rumors] sure are loud…I’m going across the board. ‘No comment’ because that’s a double whammy. That’s Taylor-related. And it’s MCU-related. I’m no dummy. You’re going to have to wait and see.” Regardless,  she did get some screen time during the game itself, as she was in attendance to cheer on beau Travis Kelce.

Like so many other movies, Deadpool 3 suffered delays due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Overall it has had a dizzying shift in release dates, having been originally slated for September of this year before being bumped back to November before once more being moved, this time all the way up to May. But we can officially expect Deadpool 3 to arrive on July 26th as part of Phase Five of the MCU.

How excited are you for Deadpool 3? What are you most looking forward to? Let us know below!

Deadpool 3

Ever since Rocky took the world by storm in 1976, people have been enamored with the idea of an underdog fighting his way to victory. There is something about two people entering an arena and just seeing who is the best. Movies help us find the themes and metaphors we can use for this mentality in our everyday life. If you’re in a funk and then play the Rocky theme, you suddenly become more motivated than ever to get over that mountain called life. With Creed III hitting theaters, it’s a great time to look back at some of the best films in the genre.

Best fighting Films

Warrior (2011)

Tommy returns home after a stint in the Marines to find his father has cleaned himself up. They begin training for an upcoming MMA tournament offering the sport’s biggest payday. Tommy’s estranged brother Brendan also enters the tournament, and the two end up on a collision course as each fights his way to the top. An interesting MMA film that finds a way to examine the drama of a broken home and how the characters can work toward healing.

Best Of The Best (1989)

A martial arts team is assembled for the United States to compete in a Tae Kwon Do tournament in Korea. Everyone on the team has to put their personal problems aside to co-exist, but that is easier said than done. While they combat the other teams in the tournament, they must also keep an eye on each other. This film is reportedly UFC legend Chuck Liddell’s favorite martial arts movie. Also, give the more traditionally action-oriented sequel a shot.

Best fighting Films

Bloodsport (1988)

One of my personal favorites on the list. This film is supposed to be based on the true story of an American soldier named Frank Dux. He goes AWOL to enter a secret underground tournament called the Kumite. The world’s best martial arts fighters show up to compete but quickly find that the tournament is serious business. The reigning champion has no problem killing his opponents to keep his title. While Frank dodges officers sent to drag him back to the military, he begins a relationship with an American journalist who wants to report on the famed event. A Jean Claude Van Damme classic that any fight fan should check out. Even though it is kind of a cheese-fest, Bloodsport is still one of the best fighting films of all time.

Best fighting Films

Slap Shot (1977)

You’re about to say this is a hockey movie, not a fighting movie. Well, I would say it is actually both. A struggling hockey team is on the verge of closing. The coach/player, Reggie Dunlop, decides how to help the team get attention and a wider audience is to bring in the Hansen brothers. A group of goonish hockey players likes to start fights and cause violence on the ice. It quickly catches on, and the team sees a much-needed boost. The fights in this film are a lot of fun to watch, bringing about its own sort of comedy. Maybe not as serious as Creed III but still a great fighting film.

Best fighting Films

Girlfight (2000)

Diana is close to being kicked out of high school for fighting. She is introduced to the boxing world as she searches for something to grab onto. Her father disapproves, but she finds that she has natural talent as she keeps training. To claim her future, she begins to push herself further into the world of boxing and hopes to find everything she’s looking for. This film was Michelle Rodriguez’s first film and put her on the map. This movie actually has a lot in common with Creed III.

Best fighting Films

The Fighter (2010)

Based on the true story of Micky Ward. His older brother Dickie got some boxing acclaim when he faced Sugar Ray Leonard back in 1978. Now Dickie has fallen into a life of drugs and crime but still trains Micky. As Micky sees those around him falling to the wayside, he decides he needs a change if his boxing career will ever move forward. This causes a rift in his family as his mother is his manager, and his brother has been training him. Can he move forward without them?

Best fighting Films

Kickboxer (1989)

Another JCVD classic. In this one, he plays Kurt Sloane. He is the corner man for his kickboxing champion brother Eric. Eric ends up paralyzed when he steps into the ring with Tong Po. Kurt thinks Po injured him on purpose and seeks revenge. He wants to train to fight him in the ring, but no one will take him. Finally, he finds an old kickboxing trainer who lives alone in the mountains. His methods are unconventional, but Kurt sticks with it to learn what he needs to avenge his injured brother.

Best fighting Films

Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing (2006)

Martial Arts Expert Michael Jai White takes over the title role of George Chambers from Ving Rhames in the first film. Chambers goes to Russia but finds he is sent to prison for bogus drug possession charges. The warden says that if he fights in the underground fighting league within the prison he will help him get an early release. He turns him down at first but is soon forced to agree. He begins to train to take on the reigning champ with the help of another prisoner who has knowledge of how to win. To get out of Russia with his life, he has to win. This underseen movie is great and earns its status as one of the best fighting films. The sequel, Undisputed 3: Redemption, does something interesting and makes this movie’s antagonist, the Russian fighter Boyka (played by Scott Adkins), the hero.

Best fighting Films

Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Maggie wants to train with the best to become a professional boxer and finds legendary trainer Frankie Dunn. At first, he refuses to train her. His personal life has been in tatters as his relationship with his daughter has fallen apart. When he sees she has natural talent, he finally relents. The two form a powerful bond that helps them get what they want most in life. Special note – this is the only movie ever to make our editor-in-chief Chris Bumbray cry in a theater.

Best fighting Films

Southpaw (2015)

Champion boxer Billy Hope is on top of the world when his wife is shot during an altercation with another boxer. After her death, Billy begins a spiral of self-destruction, leading to his daughter being taken away from him. He knows he has to rebuild his life and seeks out trainer Tick Wills. If he is going to get his life back on track and his daughter back, he knows he has to start at the bottom and fight back to the top.

To start things off, here are all the Big Game spots that have already been released:

Suppose you’re like me and are both terrified and fascinated by the rise of AI. In that case, you might get a chuckle out of Universal and Illumination’s surprisingly cleaver Big Game spot for Despicable Me 4. Set to play before the National Anthem, the spot, which the great Jon Hamm narrates, tries to explain the secret behind AI, which, naturally, is revealed to be small, yellow and annoying – being the Minions (who else?).

While I tapped out of the Despicable Me franchise a while ago, I must admit that this commercial was surprisingly clever (and timely), so who knows, maybe Despicable Me 4 will be a lot better than we think it will be. The full trailer for this one dropped a few weeks ago (watch it here), and the movie is set for a July 3rd release. Universal has called it the “first Despicable Me movie in seven years,” which is only half true, as Steve Carrell reprised his role in Minions: The Rise of Gru two years ago. Here’s the synopsis from Universal:

Gru, the world’s favorite supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain League-agent, returns for an exciting, bold new era of Minions mayhem in Illumination’s Despicable Me 4.

Following the 2022 summer blockbuster phenomenon of Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, which earned almost $1 billion worldwide, the biggest global animated franchise in history now begins a new chapter as Gru (Oscar® nominee Steve Carrell) and Lucy (Oscar® nominee Kristen Wiig) and their girls —Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Madison Polan)—welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad.

Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal (Emmy winner Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Emmy nominee Sofia Vergara), and the family is forced to go on the run.

Will you be checking out Despicable Me 4 this July? Let us know in the comments.
