Month: March 2024

Production on MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl (watch it HERE) and X (watch that one at THIS LINK), is said to have wrapped last May, and we’ve been anxiously waiting to hear a release date announcement ever since. Now, the news we’ve been waiting for has finally arrived! A24 has announced (via Deadline) that they will be giving the film a theatrical release on July 5th!

MaXXXine is written and directed by West. Mia Goth reprises the role of X survivor Maxine Minx, a burlesque performer and adult film actress with the goal of being a star. The film will follow Maxine, after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame, setting out to make it as an actress in 1980s Los Angeles.

The horror magazine Scream learned that the film is described as being “a good old whodunit slasher,” while Goth described it as “a superhero movie.” She said that because, “Maxine, as a character, has come a long way. She’s a survivor, she’s gone through a lot. When we meet her again, in this new world that she’s in, she’s really fought for everything that she has, and she’s not about to give that up. She’s going to fight for what she has. She’s a badass. There’s a strength to her. And she’s a really proactive, determined, focused woman. She goes after what she wants, and she’s not really going to take no for an answer.

Goth and singer Halsey (who can be seen with Goth in the first look image at the bottom of this article) are joined in the cast by Kevin Bacon (Tremors), Elizabeth Debicki (Tenet), singer Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Bobby Cannavale (Netflix’s The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad. The Hollywood Reporter noted that Esposito will be playing an agent for adult film and Z-list movie actors, Debicki’s character is a film director, Monaghan and Canavale are playing LAPD detectives, and Bacon is playing a private detective.

MaXXXine is being produced by A24, Ti West, Jacob Jaffke, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss. Mia Goth serves as executive producer.

What do you think of MaXXXine getting a July 5th release? Are you glad to hear the film is just four months away? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

No one expected Sound of Freedom to make such a big splash at the North American box office last summer. Nevertheless, this long-shelved drama starring Jim Caviezel as Tim Ballard, the controversial head of Operation Underground Railroad, out-grossed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, as well as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. But, the film wasn’t without controversy, with many online assuming it was somehow linked to QAnon, something the director Alejandro Monteverde denied, saying the goal of the movie was to expose child sex trafficking and that it was never intended to be a political film.

Now, Monteverde is back with perhaps an even more ambitious film, Cabrini, which is based on the life of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, the first American citizen ever to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church. To mark the film’s release, we sat down with Monteverde to discuss what drew him to the project. Interestingly, Monteverde somewhat takes issue with the “faith-based” label, arguing that movies such as Martin Scorsese’s Silence, which is also about catholicism, are never stigmatized by this label. He reveals that originally he sought to do something a little different after Sound of Freedom, but felt this story case him to a certain degree, with Scorsese himself having been linked to a different version of this project years ago. In this interesting interview he discusses that, along with he racial prejudice Italians faced int he late 19th/ early 20th century, and how he hope audiences react to the film.

Cabrini opens wide in theaters this Friday! For more about Sound of Freedom and the controversy surrounding it, check out this article

Kevin Spacey may have been found not guilty in his sex offenses trial last year, but he still might as well be The Devil as far as a lot of people are concerned – so it’s fitting that he does indeed play a version of The Devil in his latest project, the psychological thriller The Contract, which just wrapped production in Italy. Spacey’s character in the film directed by Massimo Paolucci is called The Devil, and the filmmakers told Variety that his role is along the lines of “Al Pacino’s in The Devil’s Advocate as Satan who takes the guise of a human lawyer, and that of Robert De Niro in Angel Heart, a Satanic businessman who hires a seedy gumshoe detective to descend into Hell.”

Details on the plot of the English-language film have not been revealed. Spacey is joined in the cast by Eric Roberts and Vincent Spano.

The Contract is coming our way from TM Entertainment and is being produced by Massimiliano Caroletti and Sandro Lazzarini. Caroletti and Lazzarini were so enthusiastic about the idea of getting Spacey into the movie, they reportedly “courted him” for eight months to convince him to play the role. Space has previously said that “people who aren’t afraid to be cancelled” were ready to work with him. Caroletti and Lazzarini have certainly proven that to be correct.

The Contract still has to make its way through post-production, so it might be a little while before we hear anything more about this one. In the meantime, Spacey will be seen in the thriller Peter Five Eight, which is set to reach select theatres in the U.S. on March 22nd.

Massimo Paolucci primarily works as a producer and production manager, but has previously directed the horror films Photoshock and Medium, the thriller Soldato sotto la luna, and the action movies All in One Day and Una preghiera per Giuda. He was the line producer on genre legend Dario Argento’s 2012 film Dracula 3D.

It was recently reported that Cameron Diaz will be coming out of her decade-long hiatus to star with Jamie Foxx in the film that’s ironically titled Back in Action. Deadline is now reporting that Diaz will be continuing her return to movies with a part in a dark comedy that has been co-written and set to be directed by Jonah Hill. The movie was a big acquisition for Apple Original Films and has taken to assembling an A-list cast. Diaz is reportedly in negotiations to star alongside Keanu Reeves, who is also negotiating his contract. The two had previously starred together in the 1996 comedy Feeling Minnesota.

The details of the film, per Deadline, say,
“Co-written by Hill and Ezra Woods, Outcome will star Reeves as Reef, a damaged Hollywood star who must dive into the dark depths of his past to confront his demons and make amends after he is extorted with a mysterious video clip from his past. An Apple Studios production, the film will be produced by Matt Dines, Ali Goodwin and Hill under their Strong Baby banner.”

Hill and Apple Films are also collaborating for a planned Grateful Dead musical biopic with Martin Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions. That film is said to be directed by Martin Scorsese and will be written by Dolemite is My Name‘s Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. Hill will be starring and producing under Strong Baby with Dines and Goodwin.

While Reeves has been hanging up his bulletproof on the John Wick franchise, he’s been busy working on a comic book he created titled BRZRKR, which has also been planned for a live-action adaptation from Netflix. Meanwhile, while Diaz stepped away from the acting spotlight, she would pick up a new trade as an author with the 2014 publication of the New York Times bestseller The Body Book: The Law of Hunger, the Science of Strength, and Other Ways to Love Your Amazing Body, followed by The Longevity Book: The Science of Aging, the Biology of Strength, and the Privilege of Time in 2017. Then, in 2020, Diaz and entrepreneur Katherine Power would launch Avaline, which is a brand of wines that have been farmed organically.
