Thomas Haden Church, Spider-Man 4

It’s been well over a decade since Sony Pictures pulled the plug on Spider-Man 4, but Thomas Haden Church believes there’s still a chance it could happen.

After Sam Raimi departed Spider-Man 4, Sony elected to reboot the franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man, but Tobey Maguire would return to the role years later in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Seeing the OG Spidey back on the big screen sparked interest in resurrecting Spider-Man 4, and Thomas Haden Church told ComicBook.com that he thinks it could happen and that he could even return as Sandman.

There’s been some rumors that they might ask me to do another Spider-Man, and I’d do it tomorrow,” Church said. “You know, they’ve never asked me to show up in another movie, another Marvel film. But, you know, I think Sam is gonna do another Spider-Man with Tobey [Maguire], and that’s the one that … They had an option for me to do Spiderman 4 when there was going to be a Spiderman 4. They had an option on me to come back. So if it happens, that would be fantastic. I’m getting a little old.

While there have been rumblings that Tobey Maguire (and Andrew Garfield) might return for a future Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, I’m not convinced that Spider-Man 4 is a possibility. That said, Sony’s Marvel franchise has taken a big hit with the failure of Madame Web, and reuniting the old Spider-Man gang for a new movie would certainly generate a lot of interest.

Sam Raimi has expressed an interest in the possibility after he returned to Marvel to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. “I’ve come to realize after making Doctor Strange that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team-ups,” Raimi said. “I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible. I don’t really have a story or a plan. I don’t know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don’t know what their thoughts are about that. I haven’t really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn’t a Spider-Man movie, I’d love to work with Tobey again, in a different role.

Do you think Spider-Man 4 could happen or is it all a pipe dream?

The Karate Kid, Joshua Jackson

From the ice rink to the dojo. THR reports that Joshua Jackson has joined the cast of the upcoming Karate Kid movie from Sony Pictures.

Character details are being kept under wraps, but the outlet says that Joshua Jackson will play one of the main characters in the Karate Kid movie. The film will star Ben Wang (American Born Chinese) as a young teenager from China who “finds strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor (or two).” The coming-of-age drama will also find Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprising their roles of Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso, which brings together the original franchise and the 2010 remake.

Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World) is set to direct the movie, which has been scripted by Rob Lieber (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day).

After getting his start on the big screen with movies such as The Mighty Ducks, Urban Legend, Cruel Intentions, and The Skulls, Jackson has been sticking to the realm of television for the last decade. He co-starred in Fringe, The Affair, Little Fires Everywhere, and Dr. Death, but was recently seen starring in the Fatal Attraction TV series for Paramount+. Jackson played Dan Gallagher, a Los Angeles deputy district attorney who has a one-night stand with Alex Forrest (Lizzy Caplan), but when he decides to end the affair, Alex has trouble letting go. The series didn’t receive the best reviews and was ultimately cancelled after just one season.

The new Karate Kid movie has already been slated for a December 13th release, but it’s not the only upcoming project we have to look forward to in the franchise. The sixth and final season of Cobra Kai kicked off production earlier this year, and while there’s no official release date yet, Netflix did include the final season in their sizzle reel of 2024 projects. If that pans out, we’ll be spending a lot of time in the dojo later this year, and that sounds just fine to me.

Wendell Pierce, Superman, Perry White

James Gunn’s Superman movie is now in production, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a few more cast members to be announced. THR has reported that Wendell Pierce, best known for his work on The Wire, will play Perry White in Superman, the editor-in-chief of The Daily Planet.

We’ve seen a few actors portray Perry White on the big screen, including Jackie Cooper, who played the role in Superman: The Movie, Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Frank Langella took over the role for Superman Returns, with Laurence Fishburne stepping in for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Wendell Pierce joins quite the cast with Superman, which is set to star David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; and Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen. Nicholas Hoult is also set to appear as Lex Luthor, which Gunn finally confirmed late last year.

Rachel Brosnahan commemorated the start of filming with a TikTok video alongside David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, with the captain “A supervillain, a journalist and an alien walk into a bar…”

Co-chair of DC Studios Peter Safran has teased that Superman will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

Do you think Wendell Pierce will make a good Perry White in Superman?

The Marvels, Beast, Teyonah Parris

While The Marvels may not have been the blockbuster sequel that Marvel Studios was hoping for, it did contain one element that had fans talking: a cameo by none other than Beast of the X-Men. The reveal was a big surprise to audiences, even Teyonah Parris, who was actually in the scene but had no idea she would be sharing the screen with the iconic X-Men character.

In The Marvels‘ mid-credits scene, Monica Rambeau (Parris) wakes up in a hospital bed to find an alternate version of her mother as well as X-Men’s Dr. Hank McCoy/Beast. Although the character was a digital creation this time around, he was voiced by Kelsey Grammer, who played the role in X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

While chatting with ET’s Ash Crossan, Parris revealed she was just as surprised as everyone else when Beast appeared on screen. “I had no clue until it aired,” Parris said. “When we filmed it, it was an actor who was very kind, very nice. He was dressed in a lab coat. He looked like a normal, regular doctor. No one said, ‘By the way, there’s gonna be a little surprise.’ I had zero clue. Zero. I found out with everyone else.

The Marvels also included an ongoing gag in which the other characters attempt to give Rambeau a superhero name, but the film ended with no clear choice. However, Parris said that they did film a scene with Rambeau’s superhero name, but it was removed from the movie. “We chose it, and then I watched the movie, and I was like, ‘Wait, did I miss it? Was it in there? Did we cut it?’‘ she said. “I do not know what the name is officially, because we filmed it, and then it didn’t make the movie, and if it doesn’t make the movie, I’m guessing it doesn’t exist in the MCU canon yet.

In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence,” reads the official synopsis. “But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.” The film is available on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray and is also streaming on Disney+.

Brolin Goonies

Hey you guuyyysssss. When Josh Brolin was cast as older Walsh brother Brandon in 1988’s The Goonies, he had the role of being one of the more mature central cast members. But that doesn’t mean he had it all figured out. After all, it was his debut film, so he could afford as many pointers from the more seasoned people on set…including Steven Spielberg, who had to bring the up-and-comer down a few notches during filming.

Speaking with GQ, Josh Brolin remembered that Steven Spielberg gave him some sound advice during the making of The Goonies. Spielberg may not have been the director – those duties fell on Richard Donner – but he did have story credit and was frequently on hand. “It was a really innocent and a really fun time, and I thought that’s how movies were done and they weren’t. I remember coming up to Spielberg at some point, ’cause I was reading Stanislavsky, and even though he didn’t direct it, he was there pretty much every day and I said, ‘Hey, like, don’t you think these tunnels are like my mother’s womb, and that, like, that I’m scratching to get out of the womb, and that I need to be born again?’” That’s just the sort of highfalutin behavior that gives The Method a bad name (that and other stuff…); it also wasn’t called for on The Goonies and so Brolin was called out by Spielberg, who told him to “Just act.”

Brolin tried to put up a minor fight, but it didn’t work, recalling, “And he looked at me, and he goes, ‘Just act.’ And I was like, ‘I know, but–’ And he wasn’t being rude, he was just like, ‘Don’t overcomplicate it. Just get in there, look around, listen to people, and just do your deal.’” Brolin’s deal on The Goonies was to be part of the ensemble, and if only one person is committing to The Method, then it can really throw off the balance and dynamic between the cast. You think Anne Ramsay was bothering with all of that?

Toning it down, Brolin played a crucial enough role in The Goonies, meaning he could get overshadowed by the core cast of Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Jeff Cohen, one of whom would go on to win an Oscar!
