Month: March 2024

A remake of the 1991 Christina Applegate cult classic Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (watch it HERE) is coming our way as a BET+ Original Film – and Iconic Events Releasing has announced that they will be giving the film a theatrical release on April 12th. We got to see a teaser trailer for the film last month, and now a full trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above. If you like what you see, head over to DontTellMomFilm.com to purchase tickets to see the movie on the big screen!

Directed by Wade Allain-Marcus (French Dirty) from a script by Emmy-nominated writer Chuck Hayward, whose credits include Ted Lasso and WandaVision, this remake has the following synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Tanya Crandell can’t wait to spend the summer living it up with her friends in Spain before heading to Howard University in the fall. But when her mom decides to head to a much-needed wellness retreat in Thailand, Tanya is forced to stay home with her three siblings instead. Following the unexpected death of their elderly babysitter, Tanya gets a job working for the confident and ambitious Rose. Juggling work, family, and a complicated romance, Tanya faces the responsibility of adulthood at the cost of her summer of freedom.

Simone Joy Jones (Anything’s Possible) stars as Tanya Crandell and is joined in the cast by comedian Ms. Pat (The Ms. Pat Show) as Tanya’s mom, June Squibb (Thelma) as the ill-fated babysitter, and Nicole Richie (The Simple Life) as Rose. Also in the cast are Donielle Tremaine Hansley (Charm City Kings), Jermaine Fowler (The Blackening), Tyriq Withers (The Game), Gus Kenworthy (American Horror Story), Miles Fowler (Women of the Movement), and Iantha Richardson (Will Trent). When you watch the trailer, you might be able to spot Keith Coogan from the original film in there as well.

The Don’t Tell the Babysitter’s Dead remake was produced, in partnership with BET+’s Original Films, by Juliet Berman, Oren Segal, Justin Nappi, and Juliana Maio. Michael Phillips and Tova Laiter serve as senior executive producers, with Ryan Huffman executive producing and Eric Tosstorff and Kim Coleman co-producing. Tyra Banks is executive producing the film through her company SMiZE Productions.

Earlier this year, we learned that, while the original film was rated PG-13, the remake has earned an R rating for “teen drug use, language and some sexual references.”

Timothee Chalamet Leo

It is now written that Lisan Al Gaib shall prosper at his home at Warner Bros. Amid all the controversial decisions made by the famous water tower studio, the company recognizes that they can sometimes have their cake and eat it too. Margot Robbie’s company LuckyChap signed a first-look deal with Warners after the massive success of Barbie, and the actress has been aiming to bring some plucky creativity to projects that would have otherwise only capitalized on the name of the IP. The studio has also recently signed notable deals with Tom Cruise and Rian Johnson. Recently, the studio has shown that it has the makings of a newer, better class of franchise, with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two becoming a giant hit.

The Hollywood Reporter has now revealed that Dune: Part Two star Timothée Chalamet has now also signed a first-look deal with Warner Bros. Prior to Dune: Part Two, Chalamet would also rule the ticket sales over the holiday season last December when he starred in Wonka for Warners. These two projects Chalamet has starred in have generated over $1.2 billion at the box office. Details for this new deal have not been officially disclosed, but Chalamet would basically be producing as well as acting in the projects for the studio. As opposed to Robbie’s deal, where she isn’t necessarily slated to star in her producing projects, like the announced adaptation for The Sims.

Warner Bros. motion picture group co-chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy have stated, “Over the last few years, we have admired not only Timothée’s commitment to his craft, which is evident in the range and depth of his varied roles, but also his unwavering dedication to give 100% of his time and attention to every project he has made here at Warner Bros. and elsewhere.” The statement continues, “His collaboration on the campaigns for Dune and Wonka is something we all enjoyed immensely, and the results speak for themselves. We continue to build for the future of the theatrical film business at Warner Bros. Discovery and are thrilled Timothée has chosen our studio to be his creative home.”

Chalamet has expressed his pleasant working experience with the studio and shares his enthusiasm for the future, Working with Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy and their teams on Wonka and Dune over these last few years has been a deeply rewarding experience. These are studio heads who believe in real movie making, and I’m so grateful for their support as an actor, producer and collaborator. This partnership feels like a natural next step. Let’s go!”

Johnny Depp Pirates

Jerry Bruckheimer is officially dashing the hopes of many Pirates of the Caribbean fans by revealing that the next film in the franchise will be a reboot. While this was expected for some time, Bruckheimer has always played coy over whether or not Johnny Depp would return as Captain Jack Sparrow until now. When discussing his new film, The League of Ungentlemanly Warfare with ComicBook.com, he revealed the franchise is being rebooted.

But why?

According to Bruckheimer, much of it comes down to scheduling, with him noting how hard it is to do sequels to huge hits with big stars, as you have to wait on a performer’s availability. “You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”

So while there won’t be a Top Gun without Tom Cruise as Maverick (thank God), Disney’s seemingly not ready to wait for Johnny Depp and some of his other castmates to make another Pirates of the Caribbean. One important thing to note is that Depp may well be unwilling to return, as in the past he’s mentioned that he was done with playing Captain Jack Sparrow, and seems to be re-shifting his career towards arthouse projects. These include the recent French period drama Jeanne du Barry and the upcoming Modi, which he is directing.

All that said, rebooting Pirates of the Caribbean without Johnny Depp seems like a pretty bad idea to me. It would be one thing if this was a huge, extended universe, but all of the films have been entered around Captain Jack. Heck, I’ll go out on a limb and say that none of them, other than the first film, have actually been all that good and that Depp’s Captain Jack was the only thing that really made them worth watching. If they do decide to go ahead with the reboot, they’ll need a huge star anchoring the franchise that people can get behind. There was talk several years ago about Margot Robbie leading a female-driven Pirates movie, but in a post-Barbie world that seems unlikely. She’s such a huge star now I doubt she would sign on to a franchise like this unless she was producing it herself. But honestly, is the name recognition of the Pirates franchise so good that it can sustain a franchise without Depp? A while ago it was rumored The Bear star Ayo Edebiri could star, but that rumor was quashed. Quite honestly, successfully relaunching the Pirates franchise without Depp seems like a 100-to-1 shot. What was the last successful Pirate movie outside this franchise? Why bother?

Let us know in the franchise if you’d give a Depp-less Pirates of the Caribbean a chance.

Fear Street

Director Leigh Janiak and the Netflix streaming service brought us a really fun horror event back in the summer of 2021 with the Fear Street trilogy. Three films that were filmed back-to-back-to-back and then released over the course of three weeks – those films being Fear Street Part One: 1994Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666. It was an instant franchise, and had the potential to lead to many more films… because, after all, author R.L. Stine has written over 100 books that have been published under the various Fear Street banners. A while back, Scott Stuber, the head of Netflix Film, said they were developing a new standalone Fear Street project. Then Stine took to social media to reveal that the fourth Fear Street movie would be based on his 1992 book The Prom Queen… and now Fear Street: Prom Queen has a cast! Netflix has announced (via Deadline) that the film is set to star Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant), Lili Taylor (The Conjuring), Chris Klein (American Pie), India Fowler (The Nevers), Suzanna Son (Red Rocket), Fina Strazza (Paper Girls), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty), and Ella Rubin (The Idea of You).

While Janiak’s trilogy wasn’t directly based on any specific Fear Street book, the new movie will be telling a version of this story: A spring night… soft moonlight… five beautiful Prom Queen candidates… dancing couples at the Shadyside High prom — these should be the ingredients for romance. But stir in one brutal murder — then another, and another — and the recipe quickly turns to horror. Lizzie McVay realizes that someone is murdering the five Prom Queen candidates one by one — and that she may be next on the list! Can she stop the murderer before the dance is over — for good? The official synopsis says Fear Street: Prom Queen takes us back to the town of Shadyside, Ohio, where prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider is unexpectedly nominated to the court, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.

Back in 2022, we heard that Chloe Okuno, who recently made her feature directorial debut with the thriller Watcher, would be directing the next Fear Street movie, but she left the street behind at some point in the last couple years. The film is actually being directed by Matthew Palmer, who made his feature directorial debut with the 2018 Netflix thriller Calibre. Palmer has written the screenplay with Calibre cast member Donald McLeary.

Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kori Adelson of Chernin Entertainment are producing Fear Street: Prom Queen, with Yvonne Bernard, Joan Waricha, and Jane Stine serving as executive producers. Caroline Pitofsky is overseeing the production for Chernin Entertainment.

Three and a half years ago, Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced that they were developing a reboot / reimagining of the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda (watch it HERE), with the intention of “taking what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and event-izing it in scope and budget.” Tom Gormican is on board to write (and possibly direct) the film as his follow-up to the well-received action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and we’ve heard that this new take on the concept of Anaconda might be taking a meta approach, with “actors playing loose fictional versions of themselves who go off to make an Anaconda movie and all hell breaks loose.” There was a rumor that Pedro Pascal and Paul Rudd had been offered roles in the film… But while we wait to see how that project is going to pan out, Sony Pictures has already teamed up with Canno Studio Pictures and Xiang Bros Studios to produce a Chinese remake of Anaconda! The film was released on March 1st, and you can watch the trailer in the embed above.

The Chinese Anaconda remake (which is also known as Hundred Poisons Rampage) has the following synopsis according to the folks at The Arty Dans, who have already seen the movie and written up a review of it: A group of circus performers, on their way to what they think is a new performance location, become stranded in a lush rainforest after the boat they were on, and the captain leading the way, are eaten and destroyed by an anaconda with a special red marking. They cross paths with a deadly poacher who is hunting the anaconda, who realises that he might now have enough bait to catch him. But being circus performers, they have a few survival tricks up their sleeves.

Qiuliang Xiang and Hesheng Xiang directed the film, which stars Terence Yin, Nita Lei, Ruoyan Xia, Zi Qi Wang, Xingchen Wang, and Paul Che.

The original Anaconda was directed by Luis Llosa from a script by Hans Bauer, Jim Cash, and Jack Epps Jr. It had the following synopsis: Filmmaker Terri Flores is traveling deep in the Amazon jungle looking for a forgotten tribe. Terri and her crew, which includes an anthropologist and a cameraman, come across Paul, who is stranded on the riverbank. He offers to help them find the tribe, but his secretive behavior puts everyone on edge. They realize too late that he’s using them to find a legendary anaconda that’s worth a fortune — if they can catch it. That one had an impressive cast list that included Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz, Jonathan Hyde, Owen Wilson, Kari Wuhrer, Vincent Castellanos, and Danny Trejo.

I would have been on board to watch a Chinese remake of Anaconda anyway, but they definitely increased my hype by deciding to pit a group of circus performers against the giant snake in this one.

Super Troopers

The Super Troopers gang is back on the road – well, actually it’s a distillery, with the original lawmen getting back together to promote WhistlePig’s maple syrup in a throwback to one of the great scenes in the 2001 Broken Lizard comedy.

In the ad, we see Super Trooper star Erik Stolhanske (Trooper “Rabbit”) slugging a bottle of WhistlePig barrel-aged maple syrup, to which Steve Lemme (Trooper “Mac”) coaching him to relax and open his jaw, further prompting Jay Chandrasekhar (Lieutenant “Thorny”) to tell him, “You’re doing it wrong.” Rabbit’s reply? “What are you talking about? Chugging maple syrup’s kind of our thing!”

But for such maple syrup, chugging is forbidden from the Super Troopers boys and pretty much anyone else who tries to set their lips on the bottle. After all, it is Vermont’s finest…Cue Paul Soter (Trooper Foster) and Kevin Heffernan (Trooper Farva) at the bar, with Farva declaring, “I thought we were Vermont’s finest!” And yes, Farva was quickly shot down. You can watch the ad here.

Chandrasekhar said the project wasn’t just meant to be an ode to Super Troopers but also bring attention to the shortage of maple syrup. “The maple market is facing a shortage and mother of God, we have to keep it flowing from the maple mecca that is Vermont…We’re excited to make our permanent stake in Vermont through this merger and partnership, and of course stock up on maple for future films.”

While the Super Troopers cast may not have their own whiskies – WhistlePig isn’t exactly the cheapest on the market and maybe cops promoting booze isn’t the best idea – they have been given their own special branding of the maple syrup, which is priced at $20. The tie-in is also quite appropriate, as the distillery is headquartered in the Green Mountain State, although not in Spurbury…

Super Troopers was a hit with its target audience, eventually becoming a bonafide cult classic through the home video market. This would eventually lead to a sequel in 2018, which, while it didn’t quite have the pop of the original, was solid enough for fans.
