Wizards of Waverly Place, sequel, series, Selena Gomez, David Henrie, Disney+

Before she solved murders at the Arconia alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short in Only Murders in the Building, Selena Gomez made magic happen for Disney as a part of Wizards of Waverly Place. The enchanting teen sitcom cast a spell on Mouseketeers for four seasons from 2007 to 2012, and now, toil and trouble are brewing again with a Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series under the working title Wizards.

Original stars Selena Gomez (Alex Russo) and David Henrie (Justin Russo) will take their wands out of storage to executive produce the revival project. At the same time, Gomez plans to appear in a guest role, with Henrie returning as a primary cast member for the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series. The duo plans to launch Wizards on Disney Channel and Disney+ later this year. The project comes from Disney Branded Television.

Gomez reprises her iconic role in the premiere episode as Alex, with Henrie playing Justin in all episodes. Since their characters are grown, there’ll be some additions to the cast, including Max Matenko (PlatonicThis Is Us) as Justin’s youngest son, Milo, with Janice LeAnn Brown (Playing with BeethovenGrowing Up Immigrant) in the lead role as the young and powerful wizard Billie. Alkaio Thiele (Call Me KatSpider and His Amazing Friends) joins the cast as Justin’s oldest son, Roman, with Mimi Gianopulos (Baby DaddyGet a Job) playing Justin’s wife, Giada.

Wizards “will follow Justin Russo, who as an adult has chosen to lead a normal, mortal life with his family, Giada, Roman and Milo,” says the official logline. “When Justin’s sister Alex brings Billie to his home seeking help, Justin realizes he must dust off his magical skills to mentor the wizard-in-training while also juggling his everyday responsibilities – and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World.”

“‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ captivated hearts with its spellbinding adventures and big laughs, creating unforgettable memories for kids and families everywhere,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, in a statement. “We can’t wait to step back into the magical world of ‘Wizards,’ inviting both longtime fans and a new generation to experience the enchantment alongside Selena, David, and our incredible cast and crew.”

When she’s not casting spells for the revival of a fan-favorite series, Selena Gomez is getting ready to entertain audiences in the Jaques Audiard-directed crime musical Emilia Perez. Set in Mexico, Emilia Perez focuses on Rita, a lawyer who receives an unexpected offer. She must help a feared cartel boss retire from his business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he’s always dreamed of being. Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy), Edgar Ramirez (GoldPoint Break), and Karla Sofía Gascón (We Are the NoblesThe Lord of the Skies) also star as primary cast members.

david ayer, damien chazelle

David Ayer recently turned heads with The Beekeeper, a seemingly run-of-the-mill Jason Statham action film that turned out to be a strange mish-mash of ideas and bold choices that still feels like a fever dream. Ayer has had some hits under his belt, but as a whole, the filmmaker’s resume has some divisive receptions among them. This brings us to the interesting partnering with the Whiplash, La La Land and Babylon director Damien Chazelle. As Chazelle attempts to recover from Babylon‘s flopping, the First Man director will only be producing the new film that Ayer will helm.

Deadline reports that Ayer will be directing Heart of the Beast. The film will come from Chazelle and spouse Olivia Hamilton’s company, Wild Chicken Productions, as part of their first look deal with Paramount. Ayer and Chris Long will also produce alongside under their Cedar Park Entertainment banner. The screenplay comes from scribe Cameron Alexander, who will also be on board as an executive producer. Richard Raymond will be co-producing the film. According to Deadline, “The story follows a former Navy SEAL and his retired combat dog who attempt to return to civilization after a catastrophic accident deep in the Alaskan wilderness.”

Chazelle is a proven talent. However, his films have not exactly lit up the box office and the filmmaker has been weary of how he will get funding after Babylon failed to meet expectations. Recently, he stated, “I’ve been head in the sand. I’ve been sort of busy writing. So I’ll get a real taste of how it’s changed or not [since Babylon] once I get to finish this script and try to actually get it made. I’m in a sort of trepidatious state of mind, but I have no illusions. I won’t get a budget of Babylon size any time soon, or at least not on this next one.”

He continued, “Certainly, in financial terms, Babylon didn’t work at all…You try to not have that effect [on] what you’re doing creatively, but, at some level, it can’t help but affect it. But maybe that’s OK? I have a very mixed mind about it. Who knows. Maybe I won’t be able to get this one made. I have no idea. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Tap, tap, tap it in! It might be time to grab a nine iron and wash your balls because, according to Shooter McGavin actor Christopher MacDonald, Adam Sandler is developing Happy Gilmore 2! During an interview with Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan, MacDonald said he recently spoke with Sandler, who surprised him with a script for the duo’s 1996 sports comedy.

“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,’” McDonald said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’ Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

Heh. Good luck keeping this out of the news, Mr. MacDonald. You’re right about fans demanding a sequel to the film featuring fisticuffs with Bob Barker, and there’s no putting that cat back in the golf bag.

While Variety has contacted Sandler’s reps, they’ve not received a comment.

While Happy Gilmore 2 could find several actors returning, including MacDonald, Julie Bowen (Modern FamilyHubie Halloween), Allen Covert (Grandma’s BoyThe Wedding Singer), and perhaps Joe Flarety (Detroit Rock CityFreaks and Geeks), key members of the original cast have unfortunately passed on.

Frances Bay, who plays Happy’s Grandma in Happy Gimore, died in 2011, while Richard Kiel, who played Happy’s frenemy-turned-fan, Mr. Larson, passed in 2014. Then there’s the late and great Carl Weathers, who played Happy’s friend and coach, Chubbs. The iconic Carl Weathers died of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in February, delivering an emotional haymaker to the Hollywood community. Chubbs passes away in the second act of Happy Gilmore, though his character returns in spectral form at the film’s conclusion. Sandler may pay tribute to Weathers in Happy Gilmore 2, which would be a nice touch.

While we await Sandler’s confirmation about Happy Gilmore 2, tell us in the comments below if you’d tee up for a sequel to the 1996 comedy in the comments section below.

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, the “Jason vs. Tina” battle in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, the “all hell breaks loose” sequence from the start of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, and the opening sequence of Pitch Black, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series with a look at a moment from the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it HERE) – which isn’t just getting a 4K release for its 30 anniversary. It’s also getting a remake.

Lance’s pick for the best scene in The Crow is the one where the Eric Draven character puts on the makeup and prepares for his mission of vengeance.

Directed by Alex Proyas from a screenplay by David J. Schow and John Shirley (with uncredited rewrites from Walon Green, Terry Hayes, René Balcer, and Michael S. Chernuchin), The Crow was based on the comic book series created by James O’Barr and has the following synopsis: The night before his wedding, musician Eric Draven and his fiancée are brutally murdered by members of a violent inner-city gang. On the anniversary of their death, Eric rises from the grave and assumes the gothic mantle of the Crow, a supernatural avenger. Tracking down the thugs responsible for the crimes and mercilessly murdering them, Eric eventually confronts head gangster Top Dollar to complete his macabre mission.

Brandon Lee turns in an incredible performance as our hero Eric Draven and is joined in the cast by Rochelle Davis, Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, Bai Ling, Sofia Shinas, Anna Levine, David Patrick Kelly, Angel David, Laurence Mason, Michael Massee, Tony Todd, and Jon Polito.
