Month: March 2024

The third season of HBO’s Euphoria could be in jeopardy as the explicit teen drama faces numerous issues plaguing its return. In an exclusive report from Variety, the outlet details the problems surrounding Euphoria Season 3, including story frustrations, rewrites, scheduling conflicts, and the fact that several show stars are some of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors.

HBO delayed production for Euphoria Season 3 earlier this week after announcing a spring start for cameras to roll. “HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” an HBO rep told Variety. “In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”

A problem with releasing actors into the wild to participate in other marquee projects is scheduling. Rising stars like Zendaya (Dune: Part TwoChallengers) and Sydney Sweeney (Anyone But YouMadame Web) could become swept up in blockbuster titles, adding months to their unavailability. Other complications cast doubt on a third season of the hit drama, including significant script changes for undesirable plotlines and characters who no longer feature in the show, like Fezco, played by Angus Cloud, who sadly died of a drug overdose last year.

According to Variety, Levinson’s pitch for Euphoria Season 3 included chonky and “very compelling” arcs for stars Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi. However, Zendaya, an executive producer on Euphoria, didn’t care for the story’s new direction. While Zendaya doesn’t have creative control over Levinson’s writing, the duo work closely with one another on the show, and her opinion carries significant weight. Zendaya offered input to Levinson, who is considering it. He’s already rewriting the scripts to compensate for Cloud’s death, and the sudden death of producer Kevin Turen is also a factor.

After working on the scripts, HBO put a wrench into the works by giving a thumbs down to some of Levinson’s ideas, including a new arc for Zendaya’s Rue, whose character steps into the background by becoming a private detective. To compensate, Zendaya suggested a move where a now-sober Rue becomes a pregnancy surrogate. According to insiders, that idea didn’t pass the sniff test and is getting reworked.

When HBO read the Euphoria tea leaves, they entertained a few solutions, including Levinson stepping away from the project or following Season 2 with a movie or special presentation. As the show stands, the stars are contracted for a third season and remain enthusiastic about returning to finish the story.

While Levinson continues to work on Euphoria Season 3, HBO is releasing the cast for 2024 to participate in other film or television projects. Talks will resume on October 1, with plans to shoot the third season of Euphoria in 2025. If all goes according to plan, the shoot could require the cast to block 25 weeks to shoot the six-episode season.

Anne Hathaway

A year has passed since it was announced that Anne Hathaway had signed on to star in a mysterious project It Follows director David Robert Mitchell is making for Warner Bros. Pictures, Jackson Pictures, and J.J. Abrams’ company Bad Robot. Since then, we’ve heard that Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery have signed on to star in the film alongside Hathaway… all that time, the film has remained untitled. Until today. Deadline reports that this mysterious project is officially titled Flowervale Street. It also has a release date: May 16, 2025. This puts it in direct competition with M3GAN 2.0.

Pretty much everything about this project is being kept under wraps. Last year, film journalist Jeff Sneider reported the rumor that this happens to be “a dinosaur movie set in the ’80s”. In their report of the McGregor news, The Hollywood Reporter also said that their sources have described it as “a family adventure set in the 1980s that involves dinosaurs.” Hathaway and McGregor will reportedly be playing the parents in this family adventure while Stella and Convery will be playing their children. Deadline’s sources simply described the project as a “thrill ride”… and it’s going to be shot in Imax to maximize the thrills.

It isn’t surprising that there’s not much information available, since this is a Bad Robot production, and Bad Robot likes to keep its movies as secretive as possible. Remember, they even managed to keep Cloverfield a secret until the trailer was released, and hid the fact that 10 Cloverfield Lane was a Cloverfield movie until the trailer for that one was released. Those are just a couple examples of their secrecy. Now we have Flowervale Street with its title that’s reminiscent of Cloverfield Lane.

Mitchell made his feature directorial debut with the 2010 comedy The Myth of the American Sleepover, then had a hit on his hands with It Follows in 2014. He stumbled a bit with his 2018 follow-up Under the Silver Lake, but now he’s rebounding with this project and the long-awaited It Follows sequel They Follow. Of course, since the project is set up at Warner Bros., now we just need to hope they won’t end up scrapping the movie for a tax write-off.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3, production, wrap, Jeff Fowler

After racing toward the finish line at top speed, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler is wrapping up production on the Blue Blur’s latest adventure! Fowler announced the film’s production wrap via Twitter/X with a new photo from the set. In the image, Fowler holds a giant clapper with drawings of the threequel’s primary animated cast, including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow. The latest addition to the cast, Shadow, takes the spotlight on the clapper, while Tails and Knuckles give the anti-hero the stink eye. Meanwhile, Sonic appears unbothered by Shadow’s presence, shrugging off the new player’s prominence. If you look past the clapper, you’ll find Fowler wearing a shirt saying “Keep Calm and Jim Carrey On,” a nod to the comedic actor’s franchise return as Dr. Robotnik.

Earlier this monthSonic the Hedgehog 3 star James Marsden confirmed that filming for the highly-anticipated sequel concluded, saying, “Yeah, we just wrapped, actually!” Marsden told The Playlist. “I feel really proud of what we created, and the response from the fans, we just had to get the animation right on that first movie, but great family, all positive. Jim’s just having a ball, he’s in his inspiration zone… So it’s a joy to watch him have a good time, like really enjoying it again. It’s great, very lucky to be a part of it, and I think fans are gonna be excited about all the new characters.”

James Marsden reprises his role as Tom Wachowski in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the sheriff of Green Hills. Other returning cast members include Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower, Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, Tom Butler as Commander Walters, Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, and, of course, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. New cast members include Krysten Ritter, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, Jorma Taccone, and Alyla Browne, who is said to be playing Maria. Shadow the Hedgehog will also appear after being teased in the mid-credits scene of the previous movie.

The next chapter of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is Knuckles, a six-episode series set to premiere on Paramount+. The series takes place between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and “follows Knuckles (Elba) on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.” Knuckles will debut on April 26th, followed by Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on December 20th.

A Universal Monsters project is coming our way from Radio Silence, the filmmaking team that previously brought Ready or Not, Scream (2022), and Scream VI to the screen. Universal has scheduled an April 19, 2024 theatrical release date for the film, which was once going by the title Dracula’s Daughter and now going by the less informative title of Abigail. With the release date swiftly approaching, a promo video in which cast member Kathryn Newton (Freaky) gives a tour of the set has arrived online, while co-star Dan Stevens – who can be seen in this weekend’s release Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire – has given an interview where he described Abigail as extreme and hilarious. The set tour promo video can be seen in the embed above.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Steven said, “Those Radio Silence boys are so much fun. I’m slowly ticking off all of the guys from the V/H/S anthology. I’ve worked with Nacho Vigalondo, Gareth Evans, Adam Wingard, and now the Radio Silence boys. There’s only a few more to go, and they seem to specialize in a particular horror that I’ve always enjoyed. I hesitate to use the term horror-comedy because it doesn’t sound quite right, but it’s horror that’s taken to such a batshit extreme that it becomes hilarious and enjoyable. That’s exactly the kind of film I love seeing with an audience that just decides to go with it and have a really wild time. I haven’t seen Abigail completely yet, but the few scenes that I have seen are just hysterical. It was a ton of fun with a fun group of people.

Radio Silence members Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the film, while the third member of the trio, Chad Villella, is a producer. Their Scream movie collaborators William Sherak, Paul Neinstein, and James Vanderbilt of Project X Entertainment are also producing the monster movie alongside their Ready or Not producer Tripp Vinson. Ron Lynch and Macdara Kelleher serve as executive producers. Jay Polidoro, Holly Goline, Kelly Cannon, and Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project for Universal. Stephen Shields wrote the initial screenplay for this take on Dracula’s Daughter, and Guy Busick (who co-wrote the two recent Scream movies with Vanderbilt) did some revisions.

Abigail has the following synopsis: Children can be such monsters. After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.

Newton and Stevens are joined in the cast by Melissa Barrera (Scream), William Catlett (Black Lightning), Kevin Durand (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and Angus Cloud (Euphoria) as the kidnappers with Alisha Weir (Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical) as Abigail. Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) is also in the cast.

Universal previously indicated to The Hollywood Reporter that the project falls in the lane of such films as Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man and Renfield, Chris McKay’s take on a Dracula side character — movies that provide “a unique take on legendary monster lore and will represent a fresh, new direction for how to celebrate these classic characters.” Universal released a movie called Dracula’s Daughter in 1936, telling the story of “Countess Marya Zaleska (Gloria Holden), the daughter of Count Dracula and herself a vampire. Following Dracula’s death, she believes that by destroying his body, she will be free of his influence and live normally. When this fails, she turns to a psychiatrist, Dr. Jeffrey Garth (Otto Kruger). The Countess kidnaps Dr. Garth’s assistant, Janet (Marguerite Churchill), and takes her to Transylvania, leading to a battle between Dr. Garth and the Countess in an attempt by him to save Janet.”

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett were hoping they’d be able to move on from Abigail to directing Scream 7, but studio executives weren’t willing to wait for them to finish working on their vampire project, so they were “exited” from the slasher sequel. This morning, we learned that a Ready or Not sequel is moving ahead without Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett at the helm as well.
