Kinds of Kindness

Talk about a fast turnaround! After winning four golden statues at the 96th Academy Awards ceremony for the twisted Frankenstein-like drama Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone are reteaming for the lauded director’s next feature, Kinds of Kindness. The film opens in theaters this summer on June 21, with several high-profile stars joining Stone in the project that sounds like Lanthimos plays musical chairs with his actors.

Joining Emma Stone for some of the Yorgos Lanthimos goodness are Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), Jesse Plemons (Civil War), Hong Chau (The Menu), Margaret Qualley (Drive Away Dolls), Joe Alwyn (The Favourite), Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World: Dominion), and Hunter Schafer (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Song Birds & Snakes).

While walking the red carpet at the Golden Globes, Lanthimos described Kinds of Kindness as follows: “It’s three contemporary stories, and there’s a core of actors — seven total — who play one character in each story.” he said. “So, they’ll play three different characters.” Does what I said about musical chairs with actors make sense now?

Poor Things is currently streaming on Disney+/Hulu, with physical copies arriving on Blu-ray and DVD at retailers. The borderline pornographic, visually splendiferous exploration of independence and expression banked $108.7M worldwide. Poor Things also cleaned up at the Oscars with four wins, including prizes for Best Actress (Emma Stone), Make-Up and Hairstyling, Costume Design and Production Design. During her acceptance speech, a flabbergasted Emma Stone dedicated her win to the other women nominated for Best Actress, with a special mention for Killers of the Flower Moon actress Lily Gladstone.

Kinds of Kindness opens in theaters alongside Focus Features/New Regency’s The Bikeriders and Sony’s It Ends With UsThe Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy, and Norman Reedus, follows the rise of a midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals. Seen through the lives of its members, the club evolves over a decade from a gathering place for local outsiders into a more sinister gang, threatening the original group’s unique way of life. Meanwhile, It Ends with Us tells the story of Lily, who believes she’s found true love with Ryle, but when a painful incident triggers past trauma, she must decide if love alone can carry her marriage through. However, things are complicated when her first love returns to her life.

Snowpiercer, season 4, TNT

Snowpiercer season 4 went into production in early 2022, and by the middle of that year, TNT had confirmed that season 4 would also be the last season of the show. That was soon after TNT owner WarnerMedia merged with Discovery Inc to form Warner Bros. Discovery… and things have been pretty wild since that merger happened, with films being scrapped as tax write-offs, content purges, and streaming service shake-ups. One of their surprising “write down strategy” moves came in January of 2023, when Warner Bros. Discovery decided they wouldn’t even bother to air Snowpiercer season 4 on TNT. The show has been searching for a new home ever since. Today, Deadline reports that it has found one: AMC.

Deadline lets us know, “The first three seasons of the show will stream on AMC+ later this year and season 4 will air on the linear network and the streaming service in early 2025.Snowpiercer is a Tomorrow Studios production.

Ben Davis, EVP of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios, provided the following statement: “Snowpiercer is an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride with a loyal fanbase – similar to the passionate fandoms we serve across our biggest franchise series – and a welcome addition to AMC and AMC+. We look forward to giving viewers an opportunity to binge the first three seasons later this year, in anticipation of the arrival of a remarkable fourth season helmed by Paul Zbyszewski and this stellar cast, which will premiere in 2025.

Inspired by director Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 film of the same name (watch it HERE) and its graphic novel source material, Snowpiercer is set more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland. The series centers on the remnants of humanity who inhabit a perpetually moving train, with 1001 cars, that circles the globe. As it does, issues of class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival are raised.

Paul Zbyszewski executive produced Snowpiercer season 4 with Christoph Schrewe, Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, Matthew O’Connor, Ben Rosenblatt, and Scott Derrickson. The film’s original producers, Bong Joon Ho, Miky Lee, Jinnie Choi, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hun and Dooho Choi, also executive produce. Scott Derrickson earns an executive producer credit because he directed the original pilot, which then underwent reshoots that Derrickson didn’t participate in.

Are you a fan of Snowpiercer, and are you glad to hear that season 4 will finally air on AMC next year? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

Miyazaki

So many of us (but certainly not all…) were pulling for The Boy and the Heron to take home the Best Animated Feature Oscar; and when it was announced as the winner, there was a collective disappointment that its director, Hayao Miyazaki, wasn’t in attendance. But it may have less to do with international travel or another project in the pipeline than it does embarrassment.

Toshio Suzuki – who co-founded Studio Ghibli with Hayao Miyazaki in the mid-’80s – recently said that his partner was skeptical of stepping out in public because of his seemingly constant claims of retirement. “When he says, ‘I won’t show myself to the world anymore,’ I believe that’s how he truly feels. He doesn’t want to repeat the foolishness of explaining and then lying. So, I’ll handle that part [public relations] myself.”

But there was nothing foolish about a second Oscar, and Hayao Miyazaki was reportedly excited to nab Studio Ghibli more gold. According to Suzuki, Miyazaki said, “‘As a Japanese boy, I shouldn’t show my happy face’…But he was smiling. He was completely happy. Everyone is happy. He was excited. He tried very hard to suppress his feelings, saying, ‘I don’t care’ but I got the sense that he wanted it a lot. I was still nervous. I told him, ‘Congratulations’ and he said, ‘Same to you.’”

Hayao Miyazaki has a long history of declaring that “the next film” will be his last, first announcing a retirement more than 25 years ago after Princess Mononoke. He would do it again with his next film, 2001’s Spirited Away, which was the second movie to win Best Animated Feature. Miyazaki has directed four films since, two of which – The Boy and the Heron included – had retirement claims tacked on. At 83, we’d understand if Hayao Miyazaki wanted to ink his last film, but we’re also always hoping for one more…

For those who missed The Boy and the Heron in theaters, it is expected to arrive on Max as part of a deal with Studio Ghibli.

In addition to two Best Animated Feature Oscars, Hayao Miyazaki was also given an Honorary Award in 2014.

Back in November, we heard that the Netflix streaming service had ordered a seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror – and now Netflix has unveiled a video in which they have confirmed that Black Mirror season 7 will be released sometime in 2025! You can watch the announcement video in the embed above.

Black Mirror season 7 will consist of six episodes, one of which will be a sequel to the popular season 4 episode USS Callister! We even have a short synopsis for that one: “Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning.

There was a rumor floating around a couple months ago that USS Callister would be getting its own three episode spin-off series. That has never been confirmed, but at least now we know for sure that there’s going to be some USS Callister action in the new season of Black Mirror.

Created and written by Charlie Brooker, Black Mirror is an anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable – and sometimes unsettling – conclusion. Without questioning it, technology has transformed all aspects of our lives; in every home; on every desk; in every palm – a plasma screen; a monitor; a Smartphone – a Black Mirror reflecting our 21st Century existence back at us.

Coming our way from the Broke & Bones production company, Black Mirror season 7 is being executive produced by Brooker, Jessica Rhoades, and Annabel Jones.

Are you a Black Mirror fan, and are you glad to hear we’ll have more episodes of the show to look forward to in 2025? What do you think of one of the season 7 episodes being a sequel to USS Callister? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Directed by Toby Haynes from a script written by William Bridges and Brooker, the season 4 USS Callister episode told the story of a gaming company’s CTO. He is the mastermind behind a popular multiplayer game and has a private copy of it, which he uses to torment his colleagues who fail to show him respect in the office. The episode had a running time of 76 minutes and starred Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Billy Magnussen, Jimmi Simpson, Michaela Coel, Milanka Brooks, Osy Ikhile, Paul G. Raymond, Hammed Animashaun, Tom Mulheron, and Aaron Paul.

Noah Baumbach, Greta Gerwig, Isla Fisher, Netflix

Noah Baumbach‘s mysterious Netflix feature is pulling out all the stops regarding its cast, with several talents adding themselves to the project. After painting the box office pink with the billion-dollar barn-burner Barbie, Greta Gerwig reteams with her husband, Baumbach, for a role in his untitled film. Gerwig is one of many names announced for the project, with Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge), Jamie Demetriou (Fleabag), Lars Eidnger (All the Light We Cannot See), Grace Edwards (Schooled), Patsy Ferran (Tom and Jerry), Isla Fisher (Wolf Like Me), Thaddea Graham (Doctor Who), Josh Hamilton (Eighth Grade), Eve Hewson (Robin Hood), Stacy Keach (Up in Smoke), Nicôle Lecky (Sense8), Emily Mortimer (Mary Poppins Returns), Louis Partridge (Enola Holmes 2), Alba Rohrwacher (Hungry Hearts), Charlie Rowe (Rocketman), Kyle Soller (Anna Karenina), and Patrick Wilson (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) rounding out the cast.

The stars mentioned above join previously announced cast members George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, and Riley Keough. Noah Baumbach directs from a script he co-wrote with Emily Mortimer. In addition to getting behind the camera and picking up his pen, Baumbach will produce alongside Amy Pascal and David Heyman. Plot specifics remain a mystery. However, we know the project is a coming-of-age feature about adults.

Noah Baumbach’s previous director credits include films like White NoiseMarriage StoryMistress AmericaWhile We’re YoungDe Palma, and more. He co-wrote Barbie with Greta Gerwig, a delightful and poignant film that shared significant box office success alongside Christopher Nolan’s Academy Award-winning drama Oppenheimer. After releasing Barbie, Noah Baumbach’s cache is at an all-time high. It’s not a mystery why so many high-profile stars – including George Clooney, who spent most of his time behind cameras over the past few years – want to work with Baumbach. He appears to have a golden touch in recent years, and there’s no telling what could unfold with so many incredible actors working together to create magic on screens.
