Kali Reis True Detective: Night Country

World Boxing Council middleweight champ Kali Reis recently shared the screen with Jodie Foster in the HBO series True Detective: Night Country, and now Deadline reports that she is following up the success of that season of television by signing on to join previously announced cast members Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Rebecca Ferguson (Dune), and Annabelle Wallis (Malignant) in the sci-fi thriller Mercy.

Mercy reunites Pratt with his Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov to tell a story that is “set in the near future when capital crime has increased” and follows “a detective (Pratt] who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence.” The screenplay was written by Marco Van Belle (Arthur & Merlin).

Coming our way from Amazon MGM Studios, the film is expected to go into production this spring and is already scheduled to receive a worldwide theatrical release on August 15, 2025.

Charles Roven, who just won an Academy Award for producing Oppenheimer, is producing Mercy with Atlas Entertainment SVP Robert Amidon, alongside Bekmambetov’s BEL banner and Majd Nassif.

We know who Pratt is playing in the movie, but no details have been revealed about the characters Ferguson, Wallis, and Reis will be playing. In addition to True Detective: Night Country, Reis has also had acting credits on the newly released paramedic thriller Asphalt City and the crime thriller Catch the Fair One (where she shared a “story by” writing credit with director Josef Kubota Wladyka). True Detective: Night Country was the most-watched season of the crime anthology show, averaging 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, with 3.2 million checking out the season finale on the day of its release. So it was no surprise when HBO announced that they were bringing Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the season, back to mastermind another season of the series. Every season has centered on a new batch of characters, so Kali Reis probably won’t be returning to the world of True Detective… unless López decides to switch things up this time around.

Allllllrighty Then! Fact: if you were a kid in the nineties, you grew up idolizing Jim Carrey, and probably had the two Ace Ventura movies memorized. Recently, actor Kurt Russell fondly reminisced about taking his son Wyatt to see Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and it looks like another Hollywood tough guy was also a huge fan as a kid. In a surprisingly deep THR profile, Reacher star Alan Ritchson fondly remembers seeing the film as a kid and found Carrey’s performance loosened him up, as he had a deeply devout, religious home life that tended to be austere.

Calling Carrey his hero, Ritchson remembers, “When Ace Ventura came out [in 1994], I was in sixth grade, and I was enamored. He was so physical, goofy and unafraid. I’d never seen anything like it. I dressed up as Ace Ventura for three Halloweens in a row. I showed up to school and wouldn’t break character the entire time. I had the hair, the business card and I would walk up to people at their lunch tables and say, ‘Excuse me, I’d like to ass you a few questions.”

To Ritchson, Carrey’s gift as far as making people laugh was something that inspired him. He said the only time he ever came close to meeting Carrey was when the latter was shooting The Truman Show, which was filmed close to where he grew up. He remembers staking out Carrey’s trailer during the shoot, but a pesky security guard kept him from meeting his hero. “My mom spotted him and went, ‘There he is!’ I unveiled my poster and said, ‘Hey, Jim!’ He looked over and did this big belly laugh by arching his spine backwards. My brother and I ran over to him, but a security guard was there. He put his hand on a gun and said, ‘Don’t go any closer.’ Jim was caught in this place where he wanted to sign it but had to go to work, so he just wandered off. That’s as close as I’ve gotten.”

The THR profile is well worth reading, with Ritchson showing himself to be an open book. In it, he opens up about a few near sexual assaults he survived as a model and his long, slow road to stardom. Throughout it all, Ritchson emerges as totally authentic and willing to confront a lot of things most macho actors keep hidden, such as his battles with ADHD, depression, and his devout faith. Ritchson has a stacked 2024, with him starring in a holiday comedy with Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Netflix action flick, season thee of Reacher, and this month’s Guy Ritchie movie, The League of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

The first trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has been released online, along with a teaser poster for the film

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is just over a month away, and it looks like Wes Ball’s addition to the franchise is stacking up to be a significant hit. The last three Planet of the Apes movies did a good job reinventing the franchise for the 21st century, with the last two instalments, directed by Matt Reeves, especially acclaimed. While the Caesar trilogy has come to an end, the new film is set to follow the same continuity, only taking place generations later. In many ways, Kingdom seems more in line with the original series, with talking apes, led by Owen Teague’s Noa, at war with a primitive human society.

According to Deadline, the film is tracking for a $54-61 million dollar opening, which would put it on track with the last film, War for the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $56 million. It’ll be interesting to see how word of mouth is, as the amazing reviews meant that the last two films had serious legs at the box office. Ball’s film has been getting excellent buzz, with him even nabbing the highly coveted job of directing the Legend of Zelda live-action flick

The Running Time Sets a Franchise Record

Tickets for the film went on sale yesterday, with pre-sale outlets listing the movie’s running time as 145 minutes. That actually sets a franchise record, but not by much. War of the Planet of the Apes ran 140 minutes, while Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was 130. By contrast, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (starring the now cancelled James Franco – remember him?) was only 105 minutes.

What’s It About?

According to the official synopsis from Disney/ 20th Century Studios, “Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.”

Who’s In It?

In addition to Owen Teague, the film also stars The Witcher’s Freya Allan, Kevin Durand and William H. Macy.

New IMAX Trailer

In the meantime, to get folks hyped, IMAX has released a new trailer for the film you can see below. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes comes out on May 10th. Are you looking forward to it?

mo brings plenty Yellowstone

Mo Brings Plenty is looking to bring his nephew home. The actor, who plays Mo on Yellowstone, took to social media to ask for help in locating 27-year-old Cole “Coco” Brings Plenty, who is wanted in a domestic violence incident and has not been seen since the weekend.

Mo Brings Plenty posted an image of Kansas law enforcement’s official “MISSING” poster, which has numerous details on Cole Brings Plenty that may be of use. He went missing on Sunday, March 31st, having last been seen that morning in his white Ford Explorer. It was also determined that his cell phone is currently off. Other specs, including his height, weight and eye color are also provided.

According to Cole Brings Plenty’s agent (as per New York Post), concern grew almost immediately after he missed an audition. “Cole had an audition on an upcoming film project over Zoom scheduled for Monday morning. I had spoken to him Thursday afternoon about the details and he was excited about it. When Cole didn’t show up on Zoom, I reached out to his manager.”

Fellow Yellowstone co-stars such as Cole Hauser — who plays Rip Wheeler on the western-drama — have shown their support in helping Mo Brings Plenty, with the actor posting on Instagram, “My good friend @mobringsplenty nephew is missing. He was last seen on Easter evening in Kansas City. If you have any information on his whereabouts please contact the below or your local police.”

Cole Brings Plenty has a handful of credits, including Yellowstone spin-off 1923, in which he played the sheepherder son of Michael Greyeyes. Mo Bring Plenty, meanwhile, has proven vital in bringing more attention and representation to native people in the entertainment industry as a member of the Oglala. In addition to his role on Yellowstone, he also served as American Indian Affairs Coordinator on 1923. Other credits on both the big and small screen include Cowboys & Aliens, Jurassic World Dominion and yet another Yellowstone spin-off, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, although he of course plays a different character than Mo.

Send your support to the great Mo Brings Plenty during this trying time for him in the comments section below.

The X-Files, reboot, Chris Carter, Ryan Coogler

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is developing a reboot of The X-Files, but the world has changed considerably since the original series debuted over thirty years ago, presenting a new set of challenges.

While chatting with Inverse, The X-Files creator Chris Carter spoke about the reboot and the difficulties Ryan Coogler will face with telling “conspiracy” stories. The original show arrived in the wake of Watergate and the JKF assassination, but conspiracies have taken on a different tone in recent years. “Everything’s a conspiracy,” Carter said. “No one knows what the truth is. It’s completely subjective and relative now.

Carter brought up Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, who recently found herself the subject of conspiracy theories following her surgery and public absence, later coming out to reveal she had been diagnosed with cancer. “Can you imagine, first of all, being sick — but then everyone’s got a take on it?” Carter said. “The most private thing becomes the most public thing, and then the most misunderstood thing.” Carter also wondered if The X-Files negatively contributed to the “question everything” mentality. “You do a show like this, [and] there’s media done on you and it’s like, what does that spawn?” he said. “What does that produce? What is the result of that thing? It’s not always good.

The original series had the benefit of perfect casting with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, and the reboot will have a high bar to overcome in that regard. “No matter what, he’d got a hard job,” Carter said. “Casting is a hard job. Mounting it is a hard job. All the problems that I dealt with are going to be his problems.

While Carter isn’t involved in the project beyond giving it his blessing, he did have a “really nice conversation” with Coogler when the reboot was first pitched to Fox. When it comes to passing the reins to someone else, Carter is more than happy to do so. “It’s interesting, people say, ‘Aren’t you possessive of it?’ And I say, ‘No, I’m looking forward to seeing what somebody else does with is,” Carter said.

supernatural reunion, jensen ackles, jared padalecki

Supernatural came to a close in 2020 after fifteen seasons, which is a hell of a run for any live-action show, but fans would still love to see a reunion of the Winchesters.

There have been rumblings of a Supernatural reunion, and according to Jared Padalecki, the only thing standing in the way is time. “It’s not that I haven’t seriously considered doing it, my single answer is yes. It’s timing. It’s availability,” Padalecki said while speaking with Collider. “Jensen and I feel so strongly about our show that we had for 15 years together that we don’t wanna just do it, just to do it. We don’t wanna go, ‘Hey, I have two weeks off in June. Let’s go ahead and shoot 10 pages a day, just so we can have some more content.’

Padalecki continued, “If and when Supernatural comes back, it’s going to be a labor of love, and we’re gonna put every hour in to make sure that it’s as true to the canon and to the fandom and to the story and to the characters as possible. So, my short answer is it’s not a consideration, the answer is yes . I just don’t know when I’m available. I don’t know when he’s available. But again, my answer is yes.

The Supernatural franchise with The Winchesters, a prequel series centering on Sam and Dean’s parents, but the series was cancelled after a single season. The producers attempted to find a new home for the series, but no one was willing to pick it up, especially as the Hollywood strikes were in full swing. In a statement at the time, Jensen Ackles said: “To all of you who watched, followed, and supported this story, THANK YOU. And to all those who brought this show to life…I couldn’t be more proud of what we all did together. But as they say…timing is everything. With a massive Network shift coupled with an industry strike…welp…that’s some unfortunate timing. Sleep well dear Winchesters… until we meet again. Somewhere down the road.

In terms of a Supernatural reunion, some might say that the series lasted long enough, but the Supernatural fanbase is extremely passionate and would be more than eager to spend just a little more time with Sam and Dean.

Star Wars: The Acolyte, Dafne Keen

Star Wars: The Acolyte will take audiences back to the High Republic era of the franchise, a period in which the Jedi were at their height. Naturally, we will meet plenty of Jedi in the upcoming series, including Jecki Lon, a Padawan played by Logan star Dafne Keen.

Jecki Lon is the Padawan to Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae), and Dafne Keen spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her character. “Well, I’m very excited that we know her name now, because it was secret for so long,” Keen said. “And I’m very happy that I get to say that she’s an alien and that she’s a Padawan and that she’s a Jedi. She’s a mixed species — part Theelin, part human. She’s very cool and I have some very cool fights I do with the lightsaber. I really love her. She’s a great character and was really fun to play. I’m very excited that the trailer came out. I was buzzing for days.

Keen also explained Lon’s relationship with her Master. “I’d say she is a very dedicated Padawan. She’s definitely in awe of him in a very kind of sweet way,” she said. “She thinks the absolute world of him in a way that I think they have a very sweet relationship, but she’s much more aware of the authority difference than, for example, Obi-Wan and Anakin. She’s very much like, ‘No, he’s the master and I’m the Padawan and he’s perfect. And everything he says, I have to follow to the T.’” Entertainment Weekly also dropped a few new photos from The Acolyte featuring Dafne Keen as Jecki Lon.

Set hundreds of years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Acolyte stars Amandla Stenberg (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Dafne Keen (Logan), Charlie Barnett (You), Jodie Turner-Smith (Anne Boleyn), Rebecca Henderson (Russian Doll), Dean-Charles Chapman (Game of Thrones), Joonas Suotamon (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix Resurrections).

The Acolyte logline reads: “An investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.” The series will premiere on Disney+ on June 4th

3 Body Problem, Netflix Top 10

3 Body Problem has landed on the top spot of Netflix’s Top 10 list with 15.6 million views, but is it good enough for a series which reportedly boasts a price tag of $20 million per episode?

To put it in comparison, Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted in the number one spot upon its release with 21.2 million views. The show would be dethroned by The Gentlemen, which debuted to 12.2 million views and rose to 20.1 million views the following week. While viewership numbers for 3 Body Problem are nothing to sneeze at, the sizeable budget could cause Netflix to pause when it comes to renewing the series.

David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo have envisioned a multi-season arc for the series, which could span between three or four seasons. “Well, there’s three novels in the trilogy,” Woo told GamesRader last month. “The novels get longer and longer so I wouldn’t say it maps out exactly to three. We have some really strong ideas about what to do in a season two, and then it’s a little hazier down the line. But we want to get to the end, we want to get to the end of the trilogy, and whether that’s three or four, you know, or some other number. The goal is to get to the end of the trilogy and it seems like it would map out over probably, certainly more than two seasons but beyond that, it’s hard to know exactly.

Should 3 Body Problem wind up spanning three seasons, it would cost Netflix nearly half a billion dollars, and that’s assuming the budget stays consistent.

A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day,” reads the synopsis for 3 Body Problem. “When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unflinching detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.

The series has received generally positive reviews, but our own Alex Maidy didn’t exactly love it. “I found it very hard to engage with this story, these characters, and this series,” Maidy wrote. “A misfire in every way, 3 Body Problem has some talented actors delivering some memorable moments, but none of it adds up to an experience that is satisfying, fulfilling, or even all that enjoyable.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here.
