A new limited series ripped straight from the headlines comes to us from FX. Clipped stars Laurence Fishburne, Ed O’Neill, Jacki Weaver and Cleopatra Coleman in one of the NBA’s biggest controversies. The six-part limited series is set to debut on Hulu with back-to-back episodes on June 4. The trailer for the show has been released by FX.

The official synopsis reads,
“FX’s Clipped takes you behind the scenes of a notorious NBA owner’s racist remarks, captured on a tape heard around the world. Based on the hit ESPN 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs, this limited series charts the collision between a dysfunctional basketball organization and even less functional marriage, and the precipitating tape’s impact on an ensemble of characters striving to win against the backdrop of the most cursed team in the league.

Famed coach Doc Rivers (Laurence Fishburne) arrives as coach of the LA Clippers in 2013. With a promising roster of big personalities, Rivers has the building blocks to win the franchise’s first championship.

The team’s owner, Donald Sterling (Ed O’Neill), is a well-known problem: he’s cheap, he’s erratic, he’s a bully. But minimizing Sterling’s influence to win a title becomes a personal quest for Doc. Meanwhile, a courtside power struggle escalates between Sterling’s ambitious personal assistant V. Stiviano (Cleopatra Coleman) and his wife and business partner of 60 years, Shelly (Jacki Weaver). FX’s Clipped is an Obama-era story of racial reckoning delivered via meme, in which V. and the Sterlings discover who really has the power in the internet age, and which leaves Rivers and his players wondering if the expulsion of one bad apple brings about the transformative change the media wants to celebrate.”

The limited series also stars Kelly AuCoin as Sterling’s right-hand Andy Roeser, J. Alphonse Nicholson as Chris Paul, Rich Sommers as the Clippers’ PR man Seth Burton, Corbin Bernsen as Pierce O’Donnell, Clifton Davis as NBA great Elgin Baylor and Harriet Sansom Harris as “Justine.” Executive Producers on the series inclue Gina Welch, who serves as creator and showrunner, Emmy®-winning producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, Zanne Devine, Ramona Shelburne and Kevin Bray. Bray also directs three of the six episodes. This series is an FX Production.

PLOT: In a remote fishing village, a wrecked boat containing a baby washes up on the shore. Rescued by the local mayor (Clayne Crawford) and his wife (Lara Jean Chorostecki), they adopt the baby and name her Isla. As it turns out, the child has mysterious healing powers and can even fill the sea with fish, allowing the island to be completely self-sufficient. As she grows into a young woman (Alix West Lefler), Isla becomes almost like a deity, but when her powers fail, the town becomes desperate to protect their way of life, no matter what the cost may be to Isla herself.

REVIEW: The King Tide reminded me a lot of the type of genre-tinged morality tales we used to get from Rod Serling’s version of The Twilight Zone. The premise is pretty intriguing. Imagine a child existed in your town whose mere presence guaranteed your health and livelihood would always be intact. What would become of such a town?

In The King Tide, the residents of this island village have cut themselves off from civilization completely, with them afraid that should news of Isla’s powers get out, she’ll be taken away from them. They don’t even allow electricity, and the men pass the time beating each other up, knowing that no matter how bloodied they are, Isla can patch them up in seconds. For kids, their favourite game is eating poison berries and having Isla save them just as they’re about to die. It’s exploitation through and through, but no one sees it that way.

But what happens when Isla’s powers fade? As the movie shows,  nothing good, with it becoming a classic tale of paradise lost, and how good intentions and “the needs of the many” can turn people into monsters. It’s hard to categorize The King Tide in any genre, with it having elements of sci-fi, horror and drama mixed in. It’s a very compelling yarn, graced by atmospheric Newfoundland locations that are gorgeously shot by director Christian Sparkes and his DP Mike McLaughlin.

the king tide clayne Crawford

With a tight 100-minute running time, The King Tide is propulsive without feeling rushed, as you get a sense of the community and power dynamics between the residents well before things go wrong. Clayne Crawford’s Bobby becomes the town’s mayor due to his access to Isla, but the real power belongs to his mother-in-law, Frances Fisher’s Faye. As the movie shows, Faye was riddled with dementia before Isla showed up, and now she’s regained both her mind and vitality and is in no hurry to give both of those things up, no matter what she has to do.

The film is very well acted, with Crawford doing a good job depicting Bobby’s divided loyalties, between being a father to Isla and a leader to his town. What’s good for one isn’t necessarily good for the other. Fisher steals the show as Faye, who starts to become monstrous as she protects herself from ever slipping back into dementia, and it’s maybe the best role she’s had since Titanic.

Meanwhile, Alix West Lefler gives an excellent performance as Isla, to whom the powers are just something that have always been there. The movie depicts her as ultimately innocent, even if her gift could easily become a nightmare. Of all the adults, the most sympathetic is Aden Young (Crawford’s Rectify co-star), the town’s former doctor, who’s become a broken-down alcoholic, as no one needs him anymore. Of everyone, he’s the only one who keeps Isla’s needs first and foremost in his mind, with her being best friends with his son. He’s kind of the town rebel, with him even containing a battery-powered tv in his attic, which he shows to the amazed Isla at one point, who can’t even conceive of such a thing being possible.

The King Tide really is an unexpected gem, and one can see why VVS, the Canadian distributor, has gone all-out, giving it a significant push, as it’s very entertaining and should connect with a pretty broad audience. It hits Canadian theatres today and comes out in the U.S. via Vertical later this year. Keep an eye out for it, and if it’s playing in your neck of the woods, give it a shot.

Shelley Duvall

Shelley Duvall has been through the ringer. Once a staple in the works of Robert Altman – she didn’t work with another director between her 1970’s Brewster McCloud and 1977’s 3 Women – Duvall then had parts working for Woody Allen in Annie Hall and Stanley Kubrick in The Shining. But things sort of just fell apart and Duvall became a punchline, eventually retreating from the movie business entirely, spending the bulk of her time in Texas. Now, with her first movie in 20+ years, The Forest Hills, under her belt, she has some thoughts about the industry.

In a terrific new piece in The New York Times, Shelley Duvall said she was more or less betrayed by Hollywood. “I was a star; I had leading roles…People think it’s just aging, but it’s not. It’s violence.” Duvall doesn’t mean physical violence, however, adding, “How would you feel if people were really nice, and then, suddenly, on a dime…they turn on you? You would never believe it unless it happens to you. That’s why you get hurt, because you can’t really believe it’s true.”

And yet it was, and Shelley Duvall really didn’t have much of an output in the late ‘80s on. There might be some cult support for the cameo-driven Mother Goose Rock ‘n’ Rhyme and her own children’s anthology series, Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories, but she was something of a relic – despite giving some of the most compelling performances of the ‘70s, namely in Altman’s 3 Women.

But not a single article about Shelley Duvall can be written without delving into The Shining. While Kubrick did seek to cast her because he liked the way she cried in front of the camera, Duvall by and large seemed to have a good experience working with Stanley Kubrick. The debate over whether Kubrick was truly psychologically tortuous will forever rage on, and so too will the effectiveness of Duvall’s performance. Once a Razzie winner (it was later rescinded), that performance stands as one of the most unique in all of horror cinema.

Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Yellowstone

Luke Grimes has played Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone since the very beginning, but the main series will soon be coming to a premature end, largely thanks to the exit of Kevin Costner.

While speaking with The Independent, Grimes was asked about Costner leaving the series. “Whatever happened there is unfortunate if it’s changed anything about how the show was going to unfold,” Gimes said. “I know, [Costner] got busy with his movies that were like passion projects [the newly announced Horizon: An American Saga for one]. At a certain point, you gotta do what you gotta do, man; you gotta do what you love.

Although Costner left Yellowstone behind, he has since expressed a willingness to return. “I’d like to be able to do it, but we haven’t been able to,” said Costner earlier this month. “I thought I was going to make seven [seasons], but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.” With the scripts already written and production on the final set of episodes set to begin, it may be too late for the potential return of John Dutton.

The reason behind Costner’s exit in the first place came down to money and scheduling. The actor wanted to have enough time to shoot his Western epic, Horizon, but couldn’t come to an agreement with the network. Further reports stated he also wanted the right to review, approve, and potentially veto every Yellowstone script, which didn’t sit well with Sheridan. While the relationship between Sheridan and Costner might be strained due to all of this drama, fans would surely embrace the possibility of John Dutton returning, if only to properly wrap up his character.

Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan previously opened up about the unfortunate drama regarding Costner’s exit. “My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t altered. His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful … and I’ve never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn’t work out on the phone,” Sheridan explained. “But once lawyers get involved, then people don’t get to talk to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and attempt to shift blame based on how the press or public seem to be reacting. He took a lot of this on the chin and I don’t know that anyone deserves it. His movie seems to be a great priority to him and he wants to shift focus. I sure hope [the movie is] worth it — and that it’s a good one.

Tom Cruise, Scarlett Johannson, The Gauntlet remake, rumour

According to GiantFreakinRobot, Tom Cruise is rumoured to star in a remake of Clint Eastwood’s The Gauntlet, which Christopher McQuarrie will direct. Other scoopers, such as EmpireCity, have added that Scarlett Johansson will be starring alongside Cruise, which would mark the first time the two actors have worked together.

Nothing has been officially announced, so take all of this with a grain of salt for now, but both Tom Cruise and Scarlett Johansson have previously stated that they would love to work together. At the premiere of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Cruise was certain that it would happen. “Look, I’ve watched her career her whole life,” Cruise said. “She’s enormously talented, very charismatic. It’d be fun. She could do everything. She could do comedy, drama, action, suspense. She’s someone that really draws you in on the screen, on camera. So absolutely, it’s gonna happen.

The Gauntlet was released in 1977 and starred Clint Eastwood (who also directed) as Ben Shockley, an alcoholic cop who falls in love with a prostitute whom he’s been assigned to escort from Las Vegas to Phoenix for her to testify against the mob. The original film is full of plenty of action, chase scenes, and vehicular mayhem, so you can certainly see where it could be given the Cruise treatment.

McQuarrie has previously teased that he’s got a “gnarly R-rated” movie with Cruise planned once they finish with Mission: Impossible 8. “There’s a movie that Cruise and I are talking about doing next or in some probable next, that Erik [Jendresen] and I developed together – what has been referred to on the internet as The Gnarly Movie,” McQuarrie said last summer. “It’s that movie that they’re all asking for, and that we want to do.The Gauntlet could very well be that project.

Mission: Impossible 8, previously titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, is currently filming and will hit theaters on May 23, 2025. It’s said that this will be Cruise’s final Mission: Impossible movie, so fans are very curious to see what his next project will be. If that winds up to be an R-rated remake of a gritty ’70s action thriller… count me in.

Deadpool and Wolverine, Shawn Levy, director, homework

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown increasingly large over the last 15 years, with countless storylines and characters weaving in and out of the franchise. To the casual Marvel fan, this might be a little overwhelming, but Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy doesn’t think that will be a problem with his movie.

In addition to drawing upon 15 years of MCU history, it’s expected that Deadpool and Wolverine will also touch upon 20th Century Fox’s Marvel movies. Levy told the Associated Press that he didn’t want fans to have to do any homework going in.

I was a good student in school. I’ll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies,” Levy said. “I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world. But I didn’t want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research.

Just from the trailers, it’s apparent that Deadpool and Wolverine includes many elements from other MCU projects, including the Time Variance Authority from Loki, but hopefully Levy is correct and the movie is just a good story even without all the MCU trappings. “Audiences are hungry for a great time at the movies,” Levy said. “They want to be delighted, transported and entertained. And when they are given that, whether it’s ‘Barbie,’ ‘Oppenheimer’ or any number of other recent movies, they show up. The movie is built for audience delight. I think that (they’re) in for a very fun ride.

Deadpool & Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Rob Delaney as Peter. Deadpool 3 will also star Emma Corrin, who is expected to play the villain, and Matthew Macfadyen as a TVA agent. Of course, the biggest addition to the Deadpool 3 cast is Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, who finally broke down after being pestered by Ryan Reynolds for so many years. The film is also expected to feature cameos from characters throughout the history of 20th Century Fox’s Marvel movies, with a few already being revealed in the trailer, including Aaron Stanford as Pyro.

Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26th, making it the only MCU movie to be released this year.
