Month: April 2024

The heat is back on this summer with the return of Eddie Murphy in his iconic role as Detroit police officer Axel Foley in the fourth installment, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. While Netflix has given us a sneak peek at the movie with a teaser trailer, we are now given a new look at previously unreleased footage from the Netflix film. Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff jokes about taking advice from Axel to apply in his own life as he transitioned from Los Angeles to Detroit. We are treated to some quick comedy bits that feature some R-rated language as well as some action clips of Eddie Murphy and co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a helicopter sequence.

Nearly thirty years after the release of the last movie, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will find Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) back on the beat in Beverly Hills. The official synopsis reads: “After his daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige) and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.” The film also stars Paul Reiser, Bronson Pinchot, and Kevin Bacon. Mark Molloy directs the Beverly Hills Cop sequel from a screenplay by Will Beall and Tom Gormican & Kevin Etten.

Jerry Bruckheimer returns to the franchise after sitting out the third entry. The high profile producer has enjoyed his time with Murphy and has been seeing snippets of younger Eddie at his current age. Bruckheimer states, “Eddie’s such an incredible artist. He can do drama, he can do comedy – he can do anything. And he’s the same Axel Foley. He’s still on the streets. He’s still doing what he does. Obviously with age you get wiser. But he still has the twinkle in his eye.” Mark Molloy added, “Some of the funniest moments in Axel F are when Eddie’s doing improvising. For me, a big part of my job was to create the right environment [and] cast the right people around Eddie to allow him to do what he does best.“

harvey weinstein

In a stunning development of news, the ruling of former Miramax studio head, Harvey Weinstein, has been overturned by the New York State Court of Appeals in his rape charges conviction back in 2020. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the court had a 4-3 ruling that claimed that “the judge in the New York County trial prejudiced Weinstein with improper rulings, including allowing women to testify about allegations that were not part of the case.” The court, which is the highest court in the state’s judicial system, has now decided that a new trial must take place.

Judge Jenny Rivera stated in her ruling that “Under our system of justice, the accused has a right to be held to account only for the crime charged and, thus, allegations of prior bad acts may not be admitted against them for the sole purpose of establishing their propensity for criminality. Nor may the prosecution use ‘prior convictions or proof of the prior commission of specific, criminal, vicious or immoral acts’ other than to impeach the accused’s credibility. It is our solemn duty to diligently guard these rights regardless of the crime charged, the reputation of the accused or the pressure to convict.”

Judge Rivera continued, “Defendant was convicted by a jury for various sexual crimes against three named complainants and, on appeal, claims that he was judged, not on the conduct for which he was indicted, but on irrelevant, prejudicial and untested allegations of prior bad acts. We conclude that the trial court erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes because that testimony served no material non-propensity purpose. The court compounded that error when it ruled that defendant, who had no criminal history, could be cross examined about those allegations as well as numerous allegations of misconduct that portrayed defendant in a highly prejudicial light. The synergistic effect of these errors was not harmless.”

Back in February of 2020, Judge James Burke oversaw the trial where Weinstein was found guilty on the charge of criminal sexual assault in the first degree, based on the testimony of Project Runway production assistant Miriam Haley, and rape in the third degree, based on the testimony of an aspiring actress named Jessica Mann. However, he would be acquitted of three other charges, and was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Weinstein’s lawyer Arthur Aidala celebrated the new ruling, saying, “We all worked very hard and this is a tremendous victory for every criminal defendant in the state of New York.”

The Invisible Man Elisabeth Moss

Writer/director Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man (watch it HERE) reached theatres just two weeks before the pandemic shut down the world back in March of 2020, and yet the movie still managed to make over $144 million at the global box office, on a budget of just $7 million. So it’s no surprise to hear that a sequel is in the works, it’s only a surprise that it’s taking so long to get into production. During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, The Invisible Man star Elisabeth Moss confirmed that The Invisible Man 2 is in development – and it’s getting closer to becoming a reality!

When the subject of a sequel came up, Moss said (with thanks to Fangoria for the transcription), “We are, I would say – and by we, I mean Blumhouse and my production company [Love & Squalor Pictures] – we are closer than we have ever been to cracking it. And I feel very good about it. We are very much intent on continuing that story, for sure.

Whannell’s take on The Invisible Man followed a modern tale of obsession inspired by Universal’s classic monster character. Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss) slowly begins to rebuild her life after the death of her abusive ex-boyfriend (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). But before long, she begins to question whether or not he is truly gone.

Whannell and Blumhouse Productions are currently working on a reboot of a different classic Universal Monsters property, Wolf Man. Happy Sad Confused host Josh Horowitz asked Moss if she has any involvement with that project, and she said, “I wish… I would love that. I think that’s the idea for Universal in the future if Wolf Man goes well, is to revive that universe, but no, unfortunately I have not been asked to be in Wolf Man […] but if we can get this sequel happening then maybe we can get a universe started!

So not only is Moss open to returning for The Invisible Man 2, it sounds like she’s hoping for an Invisible Man / Wolf Man crossover as well! This all sounds cool to me; I really enjoyed the old Invisible Man franchise, so I’m totally on board for more Invisible movies.

Allison Williams

I have enjoyed watching Charlie Day in movies like Horrible Bosses and its sequel, Fist Fight, Vacation, and others. I like his screen presence and find his comedic performances to be very amusing… and yet I still haven’t gotten around to watching a single episode of his sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which is currently sixteen seasons deep. I’m going to check that show out one of these days. In the meantime, Deadline reports that Day is set to star in a murder mystery called Kill Me, and he’s being joined in the cast by Allison Williams of Get Out, M3GAN, and Girls.

Written and directed by Peter Warren (The Auteur), Kill Me will see Day taking on the role of Jimmy, who wakes up in a bathtub after having tried to kill himself. Or, at least, that’s what it looks like to his friends and family. Jimmy is pretty sure he didn’t do it… Maybe. Together with Margot (Williams), the 911 operator who took his call, Jimmy sets out on a mission to solve a vitally important whodunit: did someone try to kill him, or are they chasing the specter of depression?

Warren had this to say about the casting of Williams: “We are thrilled to find in Allison not just an incredible actress to tackle the role of Margot, but a partner who is as passionate as we are about this brave discussion of mental health and suicidality, a subject which has touched all of our lives so deeply.” In addition to starring in the film, Williams will be serving as an executive producer.

Warren and Day are producing Kill Me with XYZ Films, as well as Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg of Dark Horse Entertainment. Dark Horse’s Paul Schwake and Kasey Adler also serve as executive producers. XYZ Films is providing the funding for the project, which is aiming to go into production later this year. XYZ will be presenting it to potential distributors at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.

Day’s involvement was first announced back in November. At the time, Richard provided the following statement: “When we first read Peter Warren’s script, we were impressed with his honest portrayal of depression and mental health, while still delivering a great mystery with plenty of humor. Charlie Day, with his skill at balancing the fragility of the human experience with incredible comedic energy, is the perfect person to anchor this ‘two-hander.’ We couldn’t be more excited about working on this film with our friends at XYZ.

XYZ added: “We knew the moment we read this wonderful and hilarious script from Peter Warren that it has the potential to find a wide reaching audience. Charlie Day was born to play the role of Jimmy, and we can’t wait to bring this film to life next year with our friends over at Dark Horse Entertainment.
