Month: April 2024

“Welcome to Kingstown,” Jeremy Renner’s Mike McLusky says in a cool manner just after a clip of him throwing someone off a roof. No pussyfooting around it, the new trailer of the successful Paramount+ series premieres (courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter) declaring that “He’s back in business.” Fans and well-wishers of Jeremy Renner may have been following his updates on his health recovery since his horrific 2023 snow plow accident. It almost seems like he hasn’t missed a beat as Renner makes his acting debut since the incident for season 3 of Mayor of Kingstown. The actor would even convey his nervousness upon returning to work in social media posts earlier this year, “Day one on set … nervous today. Hope this works out that I can ACTUALLY pull this off for our production and more importantly the fans.“

The official synopsis of season 3 from Paramount+ reads,
“A series of explosions rock Kingstown and its citizens, as a new face of the Russian mob sets up shop in the city, and a drug war rages inside and outside prison walls. The pressure is on Mike McLusky (Renner) to end the war but things get complicated when a familiar face from his incarcerated past threatens to undermine the Mayor’s attempts to keep the peace among all factions.”

Renner is joined this season by Hugh Dillon, Taylor Handley, Emma Laird, Tobi Bamtefa, Derek Webster, Nishi Munshi, Hamish Allan-Headley and Michael Beach.

The series star had also opened up to The Hollywood Reporter as he prepared his comeback after his accident, saying, “There’s a wonderful gift in that, if you can hang on that superpower of [realizing] what has real value in our lives.” Renner mentioned his focus was on season 3 of Mayor of Kingstown, but he wouldn’t rule out further Marvel projects in the future. “All I can focus on is this. Doing television is quite arduous. It’s long hours and a lot of heavy lifting. So I’m just focusing on this right now and will see how I come out at the end of it. Because my number one priority still is my recovery and strengthening and just getting better, internally and externally, every day. And it has to be, to be able to go to work and participate in life in the world again. I’m allowing my body always to dictate what I can and cannot do in my life.”

The third season is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, June 2 in the U.S. and Canada before expanding out in international markets the next day.

pierce brosnan, spy

With all the questions surrounding the next James Bond, Pierce Brosnan has given all of the two cents that he could. He’s dusted off inquiries and given his advice to the possible next actor, straight from his own experience of filling in the tux of the famous Ian Fleming 007 agent. While rumors still run rampant about Aaron Taylor-Johnson being courted for the role, no announcement has been made. However, Brosnan did give his approval of him for the role, saying, “I think the man has the chops and the talent and the charisma to play Bond, very much so.”

Brosnan himself is set to pick up a new dossier outlining his next mission. According to Deadline, the former MI6 agent has signed on to be in the new romantic thriller A Spy’s Guide to Survival, which comes from Uri Singer’s Passage Pictures. A Spy’s Guide to Survival will be the feature directorial debut of Simon Barry, whose past credits include him being the creator and showrunner on the Netflix fantasy show Warrior Nun as well as the Syfy show Ghost Wars. The plot synopsis, per Deadline, reads, “The film centers around a reclusive, retired spy who is brought out of hiding by his enigmatic new neighbor, digging up both of their secrets in the process.”

Simon Barry will also have the screenplay credit as he wrote the script that is based on a story by his father, Derek Barry. “As a longtime Pierce Brosnan fan, I’m extremely grateful to have the opportunity to work alongside someone I admire for their craft, character and humanity,” the director stated. Uri Singer would add, “Pierce is the perfect fit for this role, and we are so excited to see what he and Simon will do together.”

Brosnan was recently reported as being sought out for a role in The Thursday Murder Club. Should he take the part, he would be reunited with his Mrs. Doubtfire director Chris Columbus. The Thursday Murder Club will tell the story of “four septuagenarian friends who live in a retirement community and solve cold cases for fun. When a shady property developer is found dead, the four find themselves in the middle of their first live crime.”

challengers movie review

This weekend marks the last quiet at the box office before summer movie season kicks off with The Fall Guy. As such, it’s expected to be a relatively quiet weekend, with nothing expected to make a debut over the mid-to-high teens. Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers is expected to notch an easy win, thanks to the solid reviews (including our own) and the fact that it features one of the biggest stars of the moment, Zendaya. I’m expecting a debut in the $17 million-ish range, which would be a decent start for distributors Amazon-MGM, who will put the film out on Prime Video before too long.

Originally, Challengers was set for a fall 2023 start, but it was delayed because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. One could understand why, as Zendaya wouldn’t have been available to promote a movie which is earning her rave reviews. While the delay may cost it a chance at Oscar attention (April releases rarely figure into the race), it should help the movie get a box office boost, with Zendaya’s star on the rise since the blockbuster success of Dune: Part Two.

Lionsgate/Kingdom Story Company’s Christian biopic, Unsung Hero, should play well enough to its target audience to open in second place with about $9 million. It’s the true story of the Smallbone family, who are huge in the Christian music world. These movies tend to open better than expected and pull in audiences via word-of-mouth, similar to other Kingdom Story films like Jesus Revolution and I Can Only Imagine.

The rest of the top five should mostly consist of holdovers, with Abigail and Civil War battling it out for third place and a roughly $6 million finish. This might be too close to call, but I’m giving it to Civil War. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare should manage about $3 million in fifth place. Newcomer Boy Kills World is expected to open well outside of the top 5, with a debut in the $2 million-ish range. It’ll find a bigger audience when it hits streaming (we loved it).

  1. Challengers: $17 million
  2. Unsung Hero: $9 million
  3. Civil War: $6 million
  4. Abigail: $5 million
  5. Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: $3 million

Are you going to see Challengers this weekend? Let us know in the comments!
