Atomic Blonde, trilogy, Charlize Theron

It’s been seven years since the release of Atomic Blonde, the action thriller starring Charlize Theron as top-level MI6 spy Lorraine Broughton. As the film was a box-office and critical success, it begs the question: where the hell is the sequel? Atomic Blonde screenwriter Kurt Johnstad isn’t sure what’s going on with a followup, but he recently told CinemaBlend that he always envisioned Lorraine’s story as a trilogy.

To me, I always said that’s a trilogy,” Johnstad said. “You could tell three of those, and I hope they crack it. If they need some help, they know where to find me.

Charlize Theron confirmed that a sequel was in the works in 2018, with her production company, Denver & Delilah Productions, heading up the project. Johnstad hasn’t heard anything from them, saying that it’s possible “they may have gone to another writer, they may have a draft.

No matter whether Johnstad is involved in further installments of the potential Atomic Blonde trilogy, the first movie still holds a special place in his heart. “It was a fantastic script at a time in my career, and I was really able to bring it to my friends Chad Stahelski and Dave Leitch,” Johnstad said. “It brought me nothing but joy to then when Dave was like, ‘Ok, I’m gonna make this movie, Chad went to do John Wick 2.’ To watch Dave just embrace this script that was written… it had all the elements that Dave wanted, but then we really leaned into Dave’s sensibilities as a director and just made it fun and cool and put in all the needle drops with the music. And just the design of the movie, he made it his own. It’s a special movie.

Atomic Blonde 2 is reportedly set up at Netflix, but it seems to be taking a long time to get off the ground. “We took [ATOMIC BLONDE 2] to them [Netflix] and Scott Stuber [Head of Original Films at Netflix] was really interested in it,” Theron said four years ago. “We talked to him about it extensively, and we’re in the process of writing it right now. That character was set up in a way where she didn’t really reveal much of herself. So I feel like there’s a lot of potential there. The bar’s pretty high, but we’re excited about it.

Would you be down for an Atomic Blonde trilogy?

new Clue movie

Sony Pictures Television and TriStar Pictures have made a deal with Hasbro Entertainment for the film and TV rights for Clue, which could mean that we could get a new movie based on the beloved board game.

Sony is the perfect partner to adapt a property as culturally impactful and mystery-defining as ‘Clue,’” said Hasbro Heads of Film and TV Zev Foreman and Gabriel Marano. “Nicole Brown, Katherine Pope, and their teams are tremendous creative collaborators and ideal partners to help us figure out after 75 years if it was Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with the candlestick.

Clue was previously adapted in 1985, featuring an ensemble cast that included Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd, Madeline Kahn, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, Lesley Ann Warren, and Colleen Camp. Surprisingly, this has been the only Clue movie, but it’s not for lack of trying. Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was once attached to helm a remake which would have made the story more of a “worldwide mystery” with action-adventure elements.

Ryan Reynolds was also once attached to star in an R-rated Clue movie from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Jason Bateman was slated to direct and co-star alongside Reynolds, but he later dropped out. The Muppets director James Bobin was later in talks to take over, but we haven’t heard all that much since then.

Fox Entertainment was also developing an animated series based on Clue in 2021. In a statement, President of Entertainment of Fox Entertainment Michael Thorn said, “‘Colonel Mustard…In the Conservatory…With the lead pipe.’ By just hearing these colorful phrases alone, you immediately know what they mean — leaving no mystery as to why Clue is one of the most beloved board games-turned-IP of all time. We couldn’t be more excited to develop it as an animated series along with eOne and Bento Box.

As Hollywood doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to getting a new Clue movie off the ground, I’m not about to hold my breath for this one. Shout Factory released the original Clue movie on 4K Ultra HD last year.

The Movie Critic, Quentin Tarantino, plot

We were all a little shocked when it was reported last week that Quentin Tarantino would be scrapping The Movie Critic, which was supposed to be his tenth and final film. It remains to be seen what will take the place of The Movie Critic, but THR has a few plot details on what could have been, including a meta-twist which would have seen a young Tarantino making an appearance.

We never really knew all that much about The Movie Critic, only that it would be set in California in 1977 and would be “based on a guy who really lived, but was never really famous, and he used to write movie reviews for a porno rag.” THR’s report states that Tarantino was considering using the project as a way to bid goodbye to his previous movies, which would have existed in the same era as The Movie Critic. “That way, Tarantino could bring back some of the stars of his earlier work to reprise their iconic characters in ‘movie within a movie’ moments,” reads the report, “or to play fictional versions of themselves as the actors who played those characters.” Another idea included some of the characters interacting with a 16-year-old Tarantino, who once worked as an usher at an adult theater.

The film was set to star Brad Pitt, with some saying that the actor would be reprising his role as stuntman Cliff Booth from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. As far as the other roles, casting hadn’t gotten too far ahead, but the report states that Paul Walter Hauser, who was reportedly offered a role last year, was “never involved” in the project. Other actors who were being eyed include David Krumholtz and Olivia Wilde, with Wilde actually meeting with Tarantino in person sometime last year.

There had also been rumours that Tom Cruise might make an appearance in The Movie Critic after being forced to turn down a role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but according to sources, it wasn’t going to happen as Cruise hadn’t even met Tarantino.

As for why Tarantino scrapped The Movie Critic, we don’t know, but those close to the director said that he “had grown more excited by other ideas.

Rocky II, Sylvester Stallone, injury

In Rocky II, Sylvester Stallone’s character has to learn how to box right-handed due to the eyesight problems he developed following his first fight with Apollo Creed, but it was a real-life injury which prompted this twist.

During the TMZ special Arnold & Sly: Rivals, Friends, Icons, Stallone revealed that he tore his pec muscle right off the bone while training with Franco Columbu. This was just a month and a half before he was scheduled to start shooting Rocky II. “So, I go down, and it’s maybe only 200 [lbs]. I’m just warming up, and I hear a POW!” Stallone said. “I fall on the floor. And Franco goes, ‘Let me see.’ He jams his fingers — I’ve torn my pec off the bone. I mean, bad. I could hear it go rip, and he’s jamming his fingers. And I think I’m going to black out.” That… doesn’t sound pleasant.

Stallone continued: “I go home. I feel like my career is over. I’m supposed to start ‘Rocky II,’ direct it, everything in a month and a half,” Stallone continued. “Here’s the difference — and [Schwarzenegger] would have done the same thing… I can’t use this arm, so I’ll change it in Rocky. He’ll fight right-handed.” While the actor admits that the twist was “completely illogical,” he didn’t want to stop the movie for his injury. “That was one of the key things,” he said. “But it’s interesting the way these incredible journey’s happen. But we don’t stop, we don’t quit.

While I’m not certain I would be able to push past an injury like that, I think we can all be glad that Sylvester Stallone charged forward as Rocky II went on to become a box office sensation, grossing $200 million worldwide and proving that the first time wasn’t a fluke. Four more sequels followed, as well as the Creed spinoff franchise, which has a fourth installment in the works. Producer Irwin Winkler said, “We have a really good story [and] a really good plot. We got a little delayed because of the strikes, but about a year from now we’re going into pre-production.” He also confirmed that Michael B. Jordan would return to direct.

Wednesday Jenna Ortega

Season 2 of the hit Netflix Addams Family series Wednesday is expected to start filming in Ireland (season 1 was shot in Romania) by the end of this month, and some new cast members are joining in on the fun this time around. Last week, we learned that Steve Buscemi (Fargo) has been cast as the new principal of Nevermore Academy, and now Variety reports that Thandiwe Newton has signed on to play an unspecified role.

Newton’s previous credits include Westworld, All the Old Knives, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Rogue, The Slap, Vanishing on 7th Street, 2012, ER, W., Norbit, The Pursuit of Happyness, Crash, The Chronicles of Riddick, Mission: Impossible II, Beloved, Jefferson in Paris, Interview with the Vampire, and Flirting, among many others.

The first season of Wednesday consisted of eight episodes. The show comes to us from Millar Gough Ink, Tim Burton Productions, Toluca Pictures, and MGM Television, and is described as a comedic, supernaturally-infused coming-of-age series that follows the teenage girl’s years as a student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the town, and solve a mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new relationships at Nevermore. Snap snap.

Jenna Ortega plays the title character and beyond Wednesday, other members of the Addams Family include Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley, Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Gomez and Morticia, and Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester. Uncle Fester has only appeared on one episode of Wednesday so far, but we recently heard that the character might be getting his own spin-off series. Also on the show are Riki Lindhome as Wednesday’s therapist Dr. Valerine Kinbot; Joy Sunday as Siren Nevermore student Bianca Barclay; Emma Myers as Wednesday’s sunny roommate Enid Sinclair; Hunter Doohan as townie Tyler Galpin; Moosa Mostafa as quirky Nevermore student Eugene Otinger; Georgie Farmer as awkward and shy Nevermore student Ajax Petropolus; Naomi J. Ogawa as vampire Nevermore student Yoko Tanaka; Percy Hynes White as supernaturally artistic Nevermore student Xavier Thorpe; Jamie McShane as Sheriff Donovan Galpin, Tyler’s father, who has a vendetta against Gomez; Gwendoline Christie as Larissa Weems, “the principal of Nevermore Academy who still has an axe to grind with her former classmate Morticia Addams”; Victor Dorobantu as Thing, the non-verbal disembodied hand; George Burcea as Lurch; Tommie Earl Jenkins as Mayor Walker; Iman Marson as Lucas Walker; William Houston as Joseph Crackstone; Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo as Deputy Santiago; Oliver Watson as Kent; Calum Ross as Rowan; and Johnna Dias Watson as Divina.

Thora Birch had signed on to play a character named Tamara Novak, “Wednesday’s dorm mother and the only ‘normie’ on staff at Nevermore Academy, with a focus on all things botanical.” Sadly, due to a family illness, Birch had to leave the production in Romania and return to the United States before filming was complete. Christina Ricci, who previously played Wednesday herself in the live-action feature films The Addams Family and The Addams Family Values, replaced Birch, taking on the role of Marilyn Thornhill.

Are you looking forward to Wednesday season 2? What do you think of Thandiwe Newton joining the cast? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

The co-writer of the Rebel Moon movies says Part Two is going to be a nonstop action rollercoaster ride of twists and turns

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver might have debuted at #1 on the English Films List for Netflix’s Top 10 with 21.4 million views, but it wasn’t enough to top the original or stand against other films on the popular streaming service. When Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire debuted in December, the Star Wars-like action film gained 23.9 million views during its opening window. While the gap between both films isn’t staggering, one has to wonder why more people failed to tune in for the continuation of Snyder’s story.

While I would say the promotional lead-up to Rebel Moon 2 felt weaker than the first, others could beg to differ. Regardless of the sequel’s opening salvo, 5.5 million viewers returned to Rebel Moon—Part One: A Child of Fire to familiarize themselves with the original before watching the sequel. Snyder has now had three consecutive #1 films on Netflix: Rebel Moon Parts One & Two and Army of the Dead.

With his loyal fanbase, you’d think that Snyder would blow past the competition unchallenged, though it appears that Netflix subscribers enjoy various film genres. Previously, the Sam Esmail-directed thriller Leave the World Behind debuted with 41.7 million views. Millie Bobby Brown’s fantasy action film Damsel topped the Netflix chart in March with 35 million views during its opening weekend, climbing to 126 million in 44 days.

The upside is Zack Snyder’s films tend to have a long tail, with fans tuning in multiple times to enjoy the filmmaker’s output, often gathering friends for viewing parties or creative drinking games. Elsewhere, the live-action/animated crossover Woody the Woodpecker Goes to Camp flew into the #2 spot with 18.8M views, followed by the true crime documentary What Jennifer Did at #3 (16.3M views). Millie Bobby Brown’s Damsel slayed the competition again to take #9 (2.5M views). The fan-favorite fantasy has reached 126M views in 44 days.

According to Netflix‘s official press release:

Baby Reindeer, the limited series by creator and star Richard Gadd, has risen to the top of the English TV list with 13.3M views. List mainstays included 3 Body Problem, which spent its fifth week on the list in third place (3.2M views), and Guy Ritchie’s aristocratic gangster series The Gentlemen, which spent its seventh week on the list in sixth place (2.9M views). Making their list debuts were the Cate Blanchett-narrated nature docuseries Our Living World in fourth place (3.2M views), stand-up special Jimmy Carr: Natural Born Killer in eighth (2.3M views), and Season 6 of the reality competition series The Circle in ninth place (2M views).

Are you surprised that fewer people tuned in to Rebel Moon—Part Two: The Scargiver during the sequel’s weekend debut? Have you watched the movie yet? Can you believe Snyder plans to make four to six movies in the Rebel Moon series? Let us know in the comments section below.
