Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire brought American audiences into the fun schlock that defined a run of the Godzilla movies which is called the “Showa era.” This era is basically what people think of when you bring up Godzilla because it’s all about the giant monster battles. The movies are also usually given an out-there, psychedelic plot that drives the monsters into fighting each other. Godzilla X Kong was a smashing success at the box office and has the studio confident in its upcoming plans for sequels. Legendary’s chairman, Mary Parent, would state, “This (box office) is certainly an exciting result. We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds. These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good.“

The director of Godzilla X Kong, Adam Wingard, brought in his trusted writer, Simon Barrett for this installment. Both would also aim to reunite with their star from their breakout film, Dan Stevens of 2014’s The Guest, for this big-budget epic. Stevens recently spoke with Variety, where he outlines that reuniting with Wingard was as easy as two friends getting together. Their planned continued collaboration has Stevens comparing their partnership with one Rutger Hauer had with director Paul Verhoeven. “You could see them go, ‘Oh, we’re going to do a medieval epic now, or we’re going to do an intense domestic drama now… it was just point a stick and go, ‘Let’s make one of those,’” Stevens says. Stevens would then hint that Wingard teased that he has a juicy role in mind for him in a new script with Barrett. Could it be Face/Off 2?

Wingard knew he needed Stevens to make his character in Godzilla X Kong, Trapper, instantly likable and says his “secret sauce” was his ability to make any character he played feel trustworthy. Wingard explained, “No matter whether they’re a villain or a hero, there’s something about the charisma of Dan Stevens that makes everybody, young or old, like him. And of all the actors I’ve worked with, he’s the one that most casual filmgoers are familiar with, I think because he’s done so many different types of things.”

Additionally, Wingard himself is also excited about the reception of Godzilla X Kong as he looks forward to more, “There’s always the seduction of making a trilogy out of it, and I think that there’s some untapped areas to go into. There’s also ways to continue to innovate the stylized approach to the MonsterVerse, and what’s great about the MonsterVerse is that it’s allowed so many different directors to approach it with their unique style and color palette.“

jeremy allen white the seven five

From the kitchen to corruption, The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White is now being eyed for The Seven Five, a movie based on the 2014 documentary of the same name to be directed by Ben Stiller.

While the role that White is apparently circling for The Seven Five has yet to be revealed, it was reported back in 2020 that the likes of Nicholas Hoult and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were linked to play Michael Dowd, who was considered the “ringleader” of a net of corruption that ran through the New York City police department in the 1980s. One could assume that neither of these casting decisions worked out or that White could be in talks for the role of Patrick Eugene McKenna, another key player in the NYPD.

Regardless of Jeremy Allen White’s role at this time, this isn’t the first attempt to get the documentary turned into a narrative. An adaptation of The Seven Five has been in the works for years at this point, with White Boy Rick’s Yann Denage tapped to direct early on. At that point, the screenplay was being written by Out of Sight’s Scott Frank. A few years later, I, Tonya’s Craig Gillespie was hired for directing duties in another effort that went by the wayside. After bouncing around different studios, it finally came to Ben Stiller, who will be directing a script from Poor Thing’s Tony McNamara.

Here is the official synopsis for The Seven Five, as per DOC NYC where the documentary premiered in 2014: “For Michael Dowd, being a police officer wasn’t a calling, it was just a job— and, assigned to the 75th Precinct in crime-ridden East New York, not an easy or lucrative one. Seizing the opportunity to profit, he stole money from drug dealers, eventually recruiting his partner into an expanding criminal ring. Their 1992 arrest exposed widespread corruption in the NYPD. Weaving together Dowd’s revelatory testimony from the investigation, dramatic surveillance footage and interviews with the primary players, The Seven Five tells his incendiary tale.”

If things work out for Jeremy Allen White being cast in The Seven Five, it won’t be the first time he played a real-life figure, having just portrayed the late Kerry Von Erich in The Iron Claw. He, too, is tapped to play Bruce Springsteen in a movie about the making of his 1982 album Nebraska.

Madonna

Sometimes it takes a little while to get into the groove. But for some fans, Madonna is taking a little too long. As such, they are suing the Queen of Pop for cherishing her time at the expense of ticket buyers, taking the stage in Washington D.C. two hours later than was advertised.

A trio of fans launched their lawsuit due to Madonna coming on at 10:30 p.m. as opposed to the 8:30 p.m. start time listed on their tickets. As per the claim (obtained by Rolling Stone), the purchasers “had to leave the concerts early prior to the concerts’ conclusion, therefore depriving each of them of the benefit of seeing the complete concert.” According to setlist.fm, each show at the Capital One Arena lasted between 2:10 and 2:15, meaning the concert should have been close to wrapping up by the time Madonna actually took the stage.

But that’s not all the fans are upset about. Also in their filing were allegations that Madonna “maintain[ed] a hot and uncomfortable temperature in the venue during her performance” and that she also “lip sync[ed] much of her performance.” The lawsuit – which cites a breach of contract in addition to other claims – also states, “In essence, Madonna and Live Nation are a consumer’s worst nightmare.” We definitely agree with the second part…

Madonna’s Celebration Tour has been plagued with issues. At one point she had to postpone it due to health issues stemming from a bacterial infection. And this isn’t the first time that ticket buyers have enacted legal action against Madonna for a late start time – one such case came about when (again, according to setlist.fm) one Brooklyn show started at 10:50 p.m.!

Late concert start times – especially for premiere acts – is nothing new. Realistically, you should never expect the advertised start time to be when they take the stage. Still, two hours is absolutely ridiculous and apparently a habit that Madonna can justify, reportedly telling the crowd, “I am sorry I am late no, I am not sorry, it’s who I am… I’m always late.” The Celebration Tour is set to take a bow next month.

What do you think of Madonna starting her concerts two hours after the advertised time? Do you think the concertgoers have a leg to stand on? Drop your thoughts below!

David Corenswet, Adam Warlock, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, Superman

David Corenswet is our new Man of Steel, but before landing the leading role in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, he had auditioned for the role of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, at least, that was the rumour.

Responding to a fan on Threads, Gunn confirmed that Corenset did indeed audition for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but admitted that he doesn’t actually recall it. “I asked him about it and he said he did so I believe him, but I don’t remember it,” Gunn said. The fan also asked if Superman’s flying scenes in the new movie might be similar to Adam Warlock’s flying scenes from Guardians 3. “No, what we’re doing now for flying is much more complex than what was done for [Adam Warlock],” Gunn responded.

Although Gunn hasn’t been shy about reusing actors, things might have been very different had David Corenswet won the role of Adam Warlock. Will Poulter wound up playing the role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and did a fantastic job.

Superman stars David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce as Perry White; Neva Howell as Martha Kent; Pruitt Taylor-Vince as Jonathan Kent; and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has previously teased that Superman will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

Abigail, cameo

SPOILERS for Abigail. Turn back now or consider yourself warned. Scream directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have delivered a fun, blood-filled horror comedy with Abigail, and the film concludes with a cameo which has people talking, particularly fans of a beloved historical drama series.

Abigail follows a group of would-be criminals who kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure. All they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl. The kidnappers are played by Melissa Barrera (Scream), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Kathryn Newton (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania), William Catlett (Black Lightning), Kevin Durand (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), and the late Angus Cloud (Euphoria).

The titular Abigail (Alisha Weir) is a vampire whose father is the notoriously violent crimelord Kristof Lazar, which comes as bad news for the kidnappers. Throughout the film, we hear a lot about Lazar which paints him as a terrifying figure. When the big daddy vampire is finally introduced, he’s played by none other than Matthew Goode, who was featured in Downton Abbey after Stevens had left the series.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett spoke with Games Radar about Matthew Goode’s Abigail cameo. “We cast great f***ing actors to be in our silly movies,” Bettinelli-Olpin said. “I think that they ground everything in a way that you need, you need to have amazing dramatic performers to make this tone work right. You have to treat the absurdity of this premise with as much seriousness as you would treat like the most earnest drama, and I think the hack with our tone is casting amazingly talented people that just believably take you along for this ride. Dan and Matthew are just two examples from this cast who we think just absolutely brought the most and the best of themselves to it. The two of them are wildly entertaining and talented actors and they make the movie work with those performances.

Abigail is now playing in theaters, so be sure to check out a review from our own Michael Conway right here.

Justice League 2, Rebel Moon 2, Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder may not have been able to bring Justice League 2 to life, but he was able to repurpose a scene for Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver

Rebel Moon 2 includes a “Last Supper” scene in which Kora (Sofia Boutella) and the other rebels trade war stories while awaiting the final battle against Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein). Snyder told THR that this scene was originally included in his Justice League sequel. “There absolutely is a Last Supper in Justice League 2, and the scene had them telling the stories of how they got there, because Justice League 2 was going to open with us now 10 years in the future. ‘How did we get here?’” Snyder explained. “So that was kind of it, and yes, [Rebel Moon — Part Two’s sequence] has a similar sort of structure to the Justice League 2 scene that we have.

Snyder added that he used a “fair number” of his Justice League 2 ideas for Rebel Moon, “but certainly not enough to make a Justice League 2 movie not viable.

Although both parts of Rebel Moon are now streaming on Netflix, there’s still more on the way. In addition to the upcoming R-rated director’s cuts, Snyder has also confirmed that they’re working on Rebel Moon 3, and the entire franchise could span somewhere between 4 or 6 movies. “We absolutely have the story (for Rebel Moon 3) all set, we did all that work. We wrote a treatment for the movie so we’ll see how we go ahead,” Snyder said. “I guess (a total of) 4 makes sense. 4 or 6 movies, depending… I guess it’s whether or not every time we make one of these movies we make two, that’s the question. We were talking about it the other day and I was like, would an audience be disappointed if they only got one movie now from Rebel Moon? Would they be like, ‘Oh, it’s one now? Great.’

Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver will continue “the epic saga of Kora and the surviving warriors as they prepare to sacrifice everything, fighting alongside the brave people of Veldt, to defend a once peaceful village, a newfound homeland for those who have lost their own in the fight against the Motherworld. On the eve of their battle the warriors must face the truths of their own pasts, each revealing why they fight. As the full force of the Realm bears down on the burgeoning rebellion, unbreakable bonds are forged, heroes emerge, and legends are made.

Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver is now streaming on Netflix, so be sure to check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray right here.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines

Writer/director Lindsey Anderson Beer’s Pet Sematary prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines didn’t go over well with a lot of genre fans – including myself (I gave it a 6/10 review, but remember almost nothing about it at this point) – but it was a big success for the Paramount+ streaming service. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, “The movie debuted as the No. 1 title on Paramount+ and quickly broke the streamer’s record for the most-watched Paramount+ original movie within the first 30 days of a film’s release in the U.S.” So it’s no surprise that Paramount has renewed their first-look deal with Anderson Beer and her production banner Lab Brew, allowing the filmmaker to continue developing a slate of projects for the studio. This slate includes the new version of Sleepy Hollow that Beer was said to be working on back in 2022.

Here’s what’s on the Lab Brew slate, as reported by THR: Here Comes the Dark, a supernatural thriller written by Shane and Carey Van Dyke, whose previous credits include Don’t Worry Darling and The Silence.

The sci-fi thriller Optimize, based on a short story of the same name written by Anderson Beer, with Anderson Beer attached to direct, write and produce. Lashana Lynch is attached to star.

A feature inspired by the popular toy brand American Girl, with Anderson Beer attached to write and produce alongside Mattel Films and Temple Hill.

Searching for Susy Thunder, based on the true story of Susan Thunder, one of the first and most infamous hackers in the 1980s.

Sleepy Hollow with Anderson Beer attached to write, direct, and produce alongside Todd Garner of Broken Road.

Wilderness Reform, based on Matt and Harrison Query’s upcoming book of the same name. The novel has the following description: Thirteen-year-old Ben is sent to a remote reform program for troubled teens by a juvenile court judge. But when he arrives at the camp, located on the edge of the vast wilderness of northwestern Montana, he immediately recognizes that there is something off about the counselors. They’re too friendly and upbeat… yet Ben can tell there’s an undercurrent of menace. As he gets to know the boys in his cabin, he soon discovers that they each have far more going for them than whatever crime landed them there. And each has a different critical skill, one that could help them unearth what is really going on in this place—and how to make it out alive. They are inching ever closer to the truth, and the hidden evil beneath the camp’s surface will make itself known in order to deter them.

Anderson Beer is working with Lab Brew’s newly hired vice presidents Alexandra Bank and Spencer Walken to get these projects ready for production.

Daria Cercek and Mike Ireland, co-presidents of Paramount Pictures Motion Picture Group, provided the following statement: “Lindsey is a wonderfully gifted writer, director and producer with sharp instincts and a distinct creative vision, who also happens to be a truly delightful person. We’re thrilled to continue making movies together and building on our success.

Anderson Beer had this to say: “Mike and Daria are true friends and champions to their filmmakers, and I am excited to continue our very special partnership. From the scary and thrilling like Optimize, to the whimsical and surprising like American Girl, I am extremely proud of the slate we are building together. Alexandra and Spencer are invaluable assets as LAB BREW continues to expand and amplify character-driven stories from talented and unique voices.

What do you think of the slate of projects Lindsey Anderson Beer is developing for Paramount? Do Here Comes the Dark, Optimize, American Girl, Searching for Susy Thunder, Sleepy Hollow, and/or Wilderness Reform sound interesting to you? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
