The Princess Bride

Hear this now: we will always come for The Princess Bride. Nearly 40 years on, The Princess Bride remains one of the most beloved and charming movies of the 1980s, a perfect combination of fantasy, romance and action – with some swordplay and, sorry, Grandson, a little kissing thrown in. As for its success and all that it granted him, star Cary Elwes, appropriately enough, called it “really inconceivable, to use a word that’s famous from the movie.”

While not his first movie, Cary Elwes knows that 1987’s The Princess Bride is essentially responsible for his entire career, giving much credit to director Rob Reiner, who was adamant on casting him after his turn in 1986’s Lady Jane. This allowed him to work with some other premiere directors, telling People, “Once I got that part, that really kind of opened the door for me and that’s how I got the role of Robin Hood with Mel Brooks,” referring to 1993’s Robin Hood: Men in Tights. While Elwes was offered a lot of swashbuckler-type roles after The Princess Bride, he turned all of them down except for Robin Hood just so he could work with Brooks. But even prior to that he landed roles for the likes of Tony Scott (Days of Thunder) and Francis Ford Coppola (Bram Stoker’s Dracula).

Elwes has maintained a steady enough career in the decades since, but it’s really The Princess Bride that people still most remember him for. On this, he said, “You’re lucky as an actor to have anyone resonate with your work and I seem to hit the jackpot with that one…I have sold-out shows. I tour with the movie and I sell out everywhere I go. It’s crazy. It’s really beautiful.”

The Princess Bride has garnered a number of accolades over the years, with the American Film Institute naming it one of the best American romances (and nominated as one of the best comedies), something that’s hard to argue. How “As you wish” didn’t land on their list of the 100 greatest quotes is absolutely befuddling, however…In 2016, it was even selected by the National Film Registry for preservation.

Ruth Wilson

Emma Thompson of Sense and Sensibility and Love Actually and Ruth Wilson of The Affair and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House have signed on to star in the Apple TV+ thriller series Down Cemetery Road, Deadline reports. The series is based on a novel by author Mick Herron, whose Slough House novels serve as inspiration for the Apple TV+ show Slow Horses that has been running for three seasons (Apple plans to keep it going for at least five) and has proven to be very successful for the streaming service.

Down Cemetery Road will tell the story of Sarah Tucker, who becomes obsessed with finding a neighbor girl who disappeared in the aftermath of a house explosion in a quiet Oxford suburb. After enlisting the help of private investigator Zoë Boehm in her quest, the pair find themselves in a complex conspiracy that reveals that people long believed dead are still among the living, while the living are fast joining the dead.

Ruth Wilson will be taking on the role of Sarah Tucker, with Emma Thompson playing Zoë Boehm.

Morwenna Banks, who has worked as a writer on Slow Horses, will serve as executive producer and lead writer on Down Cemetery Road. Other executive producers on the series will include Thompson and Herron, plus Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, and Tom Nash of 60Forty Films. Natalie Bailey (Bay of Fires) is on board to be the lead director.

Jay Hunt (Apple TV+’s Creative Director, Europe) provided the following statement: “Down Cemetery Road has all the hallmarks of Mick Herron’s funny and acerbic writing, and I’m delighted we will be bringing it to life for Apple TV+ with such a stellar cast. Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson will make it an unmissable companion piece for Slow Horses on our service.

I’m not familiar with the works of Mick Herron, but this show seems to be off to a good start with the casting Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson.

Oscars, Academy Awards, Best Picture, rules

The 97th Academy Awards are already creating buzz as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announces changes to the rules for next year’s show. One statute going the way of the dodo is the Covid-era rule about drive-in theaters as qualifying commercial markets. Affected categories include Best Picture, Animated Feature, International Feature Film, Original Score, writing categories, and more. Deadline outlines some of the alterations to next year’s Oscars; some changes could change the game more than others.

Changes highlighted in today’s reports include:

  • Expanded theatrical run of seven days, consecutive or non-consecutive, in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets, no later than 45 days after the initial release in 2024.
  • For late-in-the-year films with expansions after January 10, 2025, distributors must submit release plans to the Academy for verification.
  • Release plans for late-in-the-year films must include a planned expanded theatrical run, as described above, to be completed no later than January 24, 2025.
  • Non-U.S. territory releases can count towards two of the ten markets.
  • Qualifying non-U.S. markets include the top 15 international theatrical markets plus the home territory for the film.

Films released from January 1 to December 31 are eligible for next year’s race. While drive-in venues no longer qualify as legit markets to host Oscar hopefuls, Dallas is replacing Miami as the U.S. metropolitan area, alongside Atlanta, New York City, the Bay Area, Los Angeles County, and Chicago.

A collection of other notable changes to the rules include:

  • Animated feature films submitted in the International Feature Film category are now eligible for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category if the eligibility requirements outlined for both categories are met.
  • The new International Feature Film category eligibility period is November 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024.
  • In the Music (Original Score) category, three composers will be allowed to receive individual statuettes if, in rare circumstances, they all contributed fully to the score. Previously, three composers were required to submit as a group. The rules now clarify the definition of a group as a recognized band. The shortlist will increase from 15 to 20 titles.
  • Regarding Writing categories, a final shooting script will now be required for submission.

Is the Best Animated Feature category going to get much bigger next year? It certainly sounds that way. The 97th Academy Awards ceremony takes place on March 2, 2025, but it’s essential to post the new rules as soon as possible. New rules mean a margin for confusion as studios, filmmakers, writers, crew members, and actors adjust to the new law of the land. Do these new rules make the show more appealing? What could the Academy do to make the show worth tuning in for? Feel free to share your suggestions in the comments section below.
