cinnamon, neil gaiman

Writer Neil Gaiman is enjoying some success with his TV adaptations Lucifer, The Sandman, Good Omens and Dead Boy Detectives. Deadline has now reported that the famed graphic novel writer will be teaming up with Graphic India for an animated adaptation of his short story, Cinnamon. The screenplay is set to be adapted by Coraline author and leading Indian animation writer and creator Sharad Devarajan (The Legend of Hanuman; Baahubali: The Lost Legends) along with Sarena Khan and Sujatha SV. Indian animator Jeevan J. Kang is on board to direct the adaptation.

The synopsis of the project reads,
“Born with pearl eyes that render her blind to the physical world, Cinnamon’s destiny is shaped forever when a mysterious talking tiger appears. Offering to lead her through the wonders and trials of the wild, Cinnamon begins a perilous adventure that will shape her path and test her resolve. She enters a hidden realm where the line between the mundane and the mystical is as thin as a whisper and where the ancient wisdom of India breathes life into a jungle thrumming with secrets.”

“I am thrilled to be collaborating with Sharad Devarajan and his exceptional team on Cinnamon,” Gaiman recently expressed in regards to his excitement for this upcoming project. “Sharad’s passion for storytelling and his deep understanding of Indian culture and mythology makes him the perfect partner to bring this tale to life. Together, we are crafting a film that will transport audiences to a world of magic, wonder, and eternal truths, a story that celebrates the transformative power of compassion and the resilience of the human spirit. I cannot wait to share this incredible journey with animation fans around the world, old and new.”

Devarajan would also state, Neil Gaiman is one of the greatest storytellers of our time, if not all time. I am honored to bring his enchanting story of Cinnamon to audiences around the world. Inspired by Indian fables, Cinnamon weaves together the timeless theme of dharma as a young princess embarks on a journey of courage and self-discovery. At its core, it explores the universal human experience of the eternal struggle between light and darkness.”

Last August, developers Fallen Leaf and Black Drakkar Games teamed up with publisher Dear Villagers to bring the world a sci-fi horror video game called Fort Solis, which was directed by James Tinsdale and featured performances from Roger Clark (Red Dead Redemption 2), Julia Brown (World on Fire) and Troy Baker (The Last of Us). Now Fallen Leaf and Black Drakkar have signed a deal with Studios Extraordinaires to develop film and TV adaptations, with the directing duo of André Hedetoft and Andreas Troedsson set to take the helm of the Fort Solis movie!

Hedetoft told IGN they were drawn to the material because “You get a super cinematic immersive experience when you play it, you have amazing characters and actors that brought them to life in the game, and you have some really creative people behind it, and I think that’s exactly the kind of dream project to do. We also have in this story some of the most interesting characters I’ve ever seen and you, as a viewer or player, are thrown into this conflict with some really interesting moral dilemmas, ethical questions and sci-fi suspense mysteries.

Troedsson added that Fort Solis is a great property because it mixes sci-fi, suspense, characters who are stuck in a very secluded place with a mystery where “you don’t really know who’s right or who’s wrong.

Described as “Moon meets Dead Space,” the video game is set in the year 2080 and has the following set-up: Jack Leary and Jessica Appleton, scientists at a human Mars colony called Fort Minor, are preparing for an oncoming storm when they receive an emergency alert from the nearby mining station Fort Solis. Leary heads over to respond, where he discovers the fort on lockdown and no sign of the crew. As he explores the base he encounters bloodstains and signs that he is not alone, eventually discovering several corpses of Solis crew members each inflicted with stab wounds. Leary heads to the maintenance bay to restart the power generators, where he is attacked by Wyatt Taylor, the lead officer of Fort Solis. Appleton, who has kept in contact with Leary over radio communications, heads over to Fort Solis at this time. Upon entering the base she immediately encounters Taylor, who attacks her but she is able to escape. Appleton begins exploring the base in search of Leary. As she investigates, Taylor taunts her over radio communications, trying to lure her to the station’s greenhouse. While she explores the station, Appleton finds the remaining crew members deceased, each appearing to have also been murdered. To find out what happens next, you’ll have to play the game… or just read the rest of that Wikipedia article.

Hedetoft and Troedsson are currently playing the game over and over while discussing the story they want to tell with the movie, finding the answers to questions like, “Are we making this story from the game or expanding on it? Or are we recounting an entirely different encounter on Mars?” The filmmakers talk some more about Fort Solis in the video embedded at the bottom of this article.

Trap Josh Hartnett M. Night Shyamalan

At the start of 2023, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros., and soon after that deal was made, we heard that his first movie for Warner Bros. would be Trap, a “psychological thriller set at a concert”. That project made its way through production toward the end of last year, with lead roles going to Josh Hartnett, fresh off his appearance in Oppenheimer (pictured below), and Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka. Now the film’s August 9th theatrical release date is swiftly approaching, so today (a couple weeks after we saw the trailer), a poster for the movie has arrived online, along with an original song Saleka recorded for the movie, where she plays a pop star called Lady Raven. The poster can be seen at the bottom of this article, and you can listen to the Lady Raven song “Release” at LadyRavenMusic.com.

As JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray described the trailer after seeing it at CinemaCon, “Saleka plays a Taylor Swift-style pop star known as Lady Raven, with Josh Harnett’s character attending alongside his daughter. He quickly discovers that the concert is a trap designed to lure a serial killer known as The Butcher, but it turns out that Harnett is the serial killer!” We had previously heard (via FilmUpdates) that Saleka – who is an R&B singer/songwriter – plays “a popstar whose concert is at the heart of the story.” Hartnett’s character is “a father who takes his child to a concert, and unwittingly gets caught up in the surrounding events.” Saleka has recorded songs for her father’s previous projects Old and Servant, but this marks her acting debut.

Hartnett has said that Trap is “very bizarre, very dark, and wild.”

Since Shyamalan produces and finances his own movies, he was able to get a SAG interim agreement for Trap (which filmed under the codename Good Grades) that allowed the project to go into production before the Screen Actors Guild strike wrapped up. His daughter Ishana was also able to get a SAG Interim deal for her feature directorial debut, the gothic fairy tale The Watchers. That film is set up at Warner Bros. as well and has a June 7, 2024 theatrical release date.

Here’s what Shyamalan had to say about Trap in an interview he did with NME a while back: “I have a new idea that I’ve started writing. It’s out in 2024 and it’s very, very exciting. It’s a thriller. It’s very unusual and very new compared to what I’ve been trying to do [recently], but I’m feeling very excited about the story, so much so that I can’t wait to tell it to you guys. I love that feeling, that electricity of ‘wow, I can’t wait for you to see it’. I will say this, the angle into the story is why it’s so exciting. The story might be something that you’ve seen before but the angle is very, very unique – the point of view.

Are you looking forward to seeing Trap on the big screen? Check out the poster and the Lady Raven song, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

thor, love and thunder, chris hemsworth

Just before Avengers: Infinity War, many were pleased at the new life breathed into the Thor series when What We Do in the Shadows director Taika Waititi took on the undertaking of a big-budget franchise film. Thor: Ragnarok was a massive hit and it seemed like this new direction was a welcomed one for the God of Thunder. After Thor’s arc in the Infinity Saga seemingly concluded in Avengers: Endgame, it looked like some strange new adventures were on the horizon as he joined up with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Then, Thor: Love and Thunder would bring back Waititi and an impressive cast for what would ultimately have a less-than-stellar reception.

Chris Hemsworth’s future as the Asgardian is uncertain, but Variety reports that the Aussie actor, who will be playing the new big bad in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, recently gave an interview in Vanity Fair where he took the blame for Thor: Love and Thunder‘s divisive response. Hemsworth stated,

I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing.”

He admitted that perhaps his desire to loosen the character up came out of Thor being the more serious of the Avengers. Hemsworth would recall that despite being endlessly grateful for the role, he would be growing increasingly frustrated with the character during his run in the MCU, “Sometimes I felt like a security guard for the team. I would read everyone else’s lines, and go, ‘Oh, they got way cooler stuff. They’re having more fun. What’s my character doing?’ It was always about, ‘You’ve got the wig on. You’ve got the muscles. You’ve got the costume. Where’s the lighting?’ Yeah, I’m part of this big thing, but I’m probably pretty replaceable.”

However, Iron Man himself — Robert Downey Jr. — would stick up for what Hemsworth and the first film’s director, Kenneth Branagh, had accomplished with the mythological/comic book crossover character, “First off, Thor as a character was super tricky to adapt — lots of implied limitations — but he and Ken Branagh figured out how to transcend, make him somehow relatable but godlike. Hemsworth is, in my opinion, the most complex psyche out of all us Avengers. He’s got wit and gravitas, but also such restraint, fire and gentleness.”

I Come in Peace Dark Angel

I have had a strong appreciation for the 1990 sci-fi action thriller I Come in Peace, which is also known by the title Dark Angel in some territories, ever since it first came out when I was a kid, and several of my cohorts here on JoBlo are fans of the film as well – with John “The Arrow” Fallon recommending it and Chris Bumbray calling it “The Best Christmas Action Movie You Never Saw.” So we’re excited to hear that Shout Factory will be giving the film a 4K release on July 9th – and if you’re also a fan of this movie and want to add the 4K release to your collection, it’s available for pre-order at THIS LINK!

But bizarre new clues reveal that the Boys’ criminal enterprise extends much further than anyone had previously imagined.

The film stars Dolph Lundgren, Brian Benben, Betsy Brantley, Jay Bilas, Sherman Howard, and Matthias Hues.
