Vampire films in the past decade or so have been hit or miss. With every Renfield, you have something
subpar sent straight to VOD. Lately, Universal Pictures has been killing it by dipping their toes back into their vampire lore with the above-mentioned Renfield and last summer’s The Last Voyage of the
Demeter.
As fun as those films were, Universal’s latest release, Abigail, is something on another level.
Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Matt Betinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s latest film.
I also had the joy of speaking with the cast, including a paired-up Melissa Barerra and Alisha Weir (who
were a power force together in both film and on-screen), Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William
Catlett, and Kevin Durand. Frankly, I’m expecting to see major things for young Ms. Weir. Her performance here is incredible.
We discussed the film, which our own Michael Conway raved about, and we also got a little more insight into their roles. Having seen the film, I tend to agree with our review in saying it’s a damn good time at the movies and one that demands to be seen with a crowd. If you are fans of the directing duo’s
previous work like Ready or Not or their Scream sequels, you are in for quite the bloody treat. It’s a
well-set-up heist film that just so happens to involve a vampire. While it is indeed tense at times, there
is a perfect balance of comedy to counteract the horror. If you are in the mood for a fun thrill ride of a
picture, I highly recommend checking out Abigail, which opens today.

The television franchise that began with Pretty Little Liars on Freeform (starting back when the channel was known as ABC Family) and continued with two short-lived spin-offs on Freeform – Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists – moved over to the Max streaming service in 2022 with a new series called Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, which leaned further into horror territory. The second season of the new series is titled Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, and last week we learned that it’s set to make its Max premiere on May 9th. With that date just three weeks away, a trailer has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.
This take on the Pretty Little Liars concept was created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring. It focuses on “new characters in the new fictional town of Millwood, PA and with multiple references to iconic horror movies (think Carrie and the original Halloween).” Season 1 had the following synopsis: Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in present day, a disparate group of teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago… as well as their own.
The cast includes Bailee Madison as Imogen Adams, Chandler Kinney as Tabby Haworthe, Zaria as Faran Bryant, Maia Reficco as Noa Olivar, Bechtel as Karen/Kelly Beasley, Sharon Leal as Sidney Haworthe, Elena Goode as Marjorie Olivar, Eric Johnson as Sheriff Tom Beasley, Alex Aiono as Shawn Noble, Lea Salonga as Elodie Honrada, and Annabeth Gish as Dr. Sullivan. Jordan Gonzalez plays Ash Romero, who has been promoted from a recurring character to a series regular.
Aguirre-Sacasa and Bring have said that sources of inspiration for Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, which features a masked slasher called Bloody Rose, include Friday the 13th Part 2, Halloween II, Scream 2, and When a Stranger Calls.
Aguirre-Sacasa and Bring serve as executive producers with I. Marlene King, Michael Grassi, Leslie Morgenstein, and Gina Girolamo. Aguirre-Sacasa’s company Muckle Man Productions is producing Pretty Little Liars: Summer School with Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television. Muckle Man’s Jimmy Gibbons also receives a producing credit.

In 2016, George Miller came back to his cult franchise, Mad Max, at 70 years old and accomplished a major feat that amazingly put younger action directors in their place. With Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller was able to make an epic-scale, high-budgeted version of his wasteland fairy tale with some of the most eye-popping action sequences seen in some time. The sequel featured a new character played by Charlize Theron and Anya Taylor-Joy now embodies her for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The vehicular carnage crashes into theaters next month and promotion has been revving up with a cover story in the latest issue of Total Film, which features newly seen covers that you can view HERE.
Now Collider has provided the previously unreleased images from the Total Film cover story. In the new pictures, readers are previewed to the evolution of Furiosa’s origin. In one image, the character still sports her long locks, but has already adapted the war face paint as she exudes a road warrior presence with some Max Rockatansky-looking fatigues. In another image, she has completely taken on the character’s iconic look with her freshly shaved head and wardrobe that comes straight out of Fury Road. In the last image, the blood rivalry between Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth’s characters intensifies as Dementus has Furiosa in his grasp and the two have a face-to-face.
Directed by Miller from a screenplay he wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa has the following synopsis: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by the Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants are in a war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
Miller hasn’t revealed whether or not Mad Max will be appearing in the movie; he has only teased that “Max is lurking there in the background.” If you’re anxious to see more Mad Max, there’s some good news: Miller has confirmed that he has another Mad Max story written, presumably the Mad Max: The Wasteland story that he has referenced here and there ever since Fury Road was released.

On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain… which, of course, means we’re now going to get multiple horror movies that feature characters inspired by Mickey Mouse. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and Michael Leavy and director Steven LaMorte, who previously made the Grinch-inspired horror movie The Mean One, were teaming up for a Steamboat Willie-inspired horror flick. Now it has been confirmed that the movie is called Screamboat, and Iconic Events Releasing will be giving it a theatrical release sometime in 2025.
Screamboat is expected to start filming in the spring and will tell the story of a mischievous mouse that stalks a group of New Yorkers on a late night ferry ride, unleashing murderous mayhem on a relaxing commute. Can the ship’s motley crew of travelers find a way to stop a killer creature who has developed a taste for tourists? LaMorte previously told Variety that the sadistic mouse will be referred to as Steamboat Willie, not as Mickey Mouse. A press release tells us “the filmmaker and his producers promising buckets of blood and unhinged chaos as their miniature mouse attacks a group of ferry commuters against the unmistakable backdrop of New York City’s iconic skyline. Screamboat will feature a mix of practical creature effects, miniatures, and cutting edge virtual production to showcase its very mischievous monster slashing his way through a ferry of fear.”
Steven Menkin, President and Co-Founder of Iconic Events, provided the following statement: “Iconic Events couldn’t be more excited to get in on the ground floor of what is going to be a fun and terror-filled ride. Allowing filmmakers like Steven LaMorte the opportunity to showcase their films in movie theaters nationwide and bring horror fans together to experience this unique story is what Iconic is all about. We are more than excited to partner together on Screamboat.“
LaMorte added, “I’m thrilled to partner with Iconic Events Releasing to bring Screamboat to theaters across the country. We’re collaborating with incredible artists both in front of the camera and behind the scenes to bring a very unhinged horror comedy to life in the way it’s meant to be seen – on the big screen. We can’t wait for audiences to meet our mischievous, murderous mouse!“
La Morte is producing Screamboat with Amy Schumacher, Martine Melloul, and the previously mentioned Steven Della Salla and Michael Leavy.
