Those who wish someone other than Jesse Eisenberg had played Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice could have seen their dream come true if Leonardo DiCaprio had accepted the role. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Snyder said he spoke on the phone with Adam Driver about the villainous role and that he approached DiCaprio about playing the bald baddie, too.

When asked if DiCaprio showed any interest, Snyder said, “I think so.” Adding, “He had a lot of great ideas actually, just in the meeting. I think in the end, he was like ‘Eh, I don’t know.’ But he was really smart about the material and really smart about the character.”

“He was the one that mentioned to me the idea about Superman fighting the Justice League at some point,” Snyder added. As you know, we saw this plot point come to life in Snyder’s Justice League. “I was like, ‘Oh, that’s cool.’ He is a [comic guy]. I was like, ‘I’m going to put that over there.’”

Unsurprisingly, Leonardo DiCaprio refused the role. The actor appears to have a strict “No Superhero Movies” policy. He once told Timothée Chalamet that suiting up for superhero hijinks would be a mistake. After seeing Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Chalamet began thinking about going the way of the superhero. During an interview with The New York Times, Chalamet revealed, “Well, Leonardo DiCaprio said to me, ‘No superhero movies, no hard drugs.’ Which I thought was very good,” Chalamet said. “I follow them both! But the movie that made me want to act is a superhero movie, ‘The Dark Knight.’ If the script was great, if the director was great, I’d have to consider it.”

Would Leonardo DiCaprio make a good Lex Luthor? Personally, I don’t see him gelling with the Snyderverse, but stranger castings have happened. I wonder if DiCaprio would have portrayed Luthor in a classic light instead of Eisenberg’s Zuckerbergian delivery. Who would you choose if you could cast DiCaprio as a comic book villain? He could have made for a good Hugo Strange, Mad Hatter, or Hush.

Sundance Film Festival

Perhaps no other film festival in North America is as synonymous with its locale as Sundance. Sure, there’s New York and Toronto and Telluride but when you picture Sundance, it’s also the mountains and the snow and the atmosphere of Park City, Utah. Now, considerations are being made that could uproot the Sundance Film Festival from its adopted home.

This all stems from the Sundance Film Festival having a contract with Park City, which is set to expire in 2027. This would then give the premiere indie fest the chance to relocate, leaving behind the Utah town it has called its primary hub for decades.

As per Eugene Hernandez, director of Sundance Film Festival and Public Programming (via Salt Lake City’s KUTV), “We are in a unique moment for our Festival and our global film community, and with the contract up for renewal, this exploration allows us to responsibly consider how we best continue sustainably serving our community while maintaining the essence of the Festival experience. We are looking forward to conversations that center supporting artists and serving audiences as part of our mission and work at Sundance Institute, and are motivated by our commitment to ensure that the Festival continues to thrive culturally, operationally, and financially as it has for four decades.” An official announcement is expected late this year or early next.

While the festival has its origins elsewhere – it launched as the Utah/US Film Festival in Salt Lake City in 1978 – it has been tied to Park City since the early ‘80s. So while this isn’t exactly like moving the New York Film Festival from Manhattan to East Fishkill, it’s difficult to imagine it being held anywhere else at this point.

Not surprisingly, there is an active push to ensure that the Sundance Film Festival stays within city limits, with Park City’s mayor, Nann Worel, stating, “We appreciate our partnership with Sundance, and we want the Festival to remain here for another 40 years. We will not be alone in the effort to ensure that Utah remains host to diverse new voices from around the globe.” Robert Redford – who was instrumental in Sundance’s success, with the fest even being named after his Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid character – is heavily involved in the ongoing process.

What would you think if the Sundance Film Festival left Park City? What would the fest lose?

Total Film Magazine wants you to witness the badassery of Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa for George Miller’s upcoming prequel with new covers for the entertainment publication. On the first Furiosa magazine cover, Taylor-Joy’s road warrior sports the latest in Wasteland fashion: tire tread armor, worn leather straps, and black grease paint covering the top half of her shaven skull. For the alternate cover, Furiosa evokes an unholy Wasteland clergy look with a red cloak, bandaged chest, fire-roasted pants, and a mechanical arm to help crush War Boys’ balls into dust.

Directed by Miller from a screenplay he wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa has the following synopsis: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by the Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants are in a war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

The title character, Furiosa, is played by Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), who takes over from Fury Road’s Charlize Theron. Lachy Hulme (Offspring) pulls double duty, playing both Fury Road villain Immortan Joe (taking over from the late Hugh Keays-Byrne) and a character called Rizzdale Pell, who is “one of the gang members affiliated with the warlord Dementus.” We’ve heard Dementus is “a pretty horrible individual, and he’s played by Chris Hemsworth (Thor). Also in the cast are Tom Burke (C.B. Strike) and Quaden Bayles (Three Thousand Years of Longing), with Alyla Browne (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart) as a younger Furiosa. Nathan Jones and Angus Sampson are said to reprise their Fury Road roles of Rictus Erectus and The Organic Mechanic.

Miller hasn’t revealed whether or not Mad Max will be appearing in the movie; he has only teased that “Max is lurking there in the background.” If you’re anxious to see more Mad Max, there’s some good news: Miller has confirmed that he has another Mad Max story written, presumably the Mad Max: The Wasteland story that he has referenced here and there ever since Fury Road was released.

What do you think of Total Film’s Furiosa magazine covers? Will you race to theaters opening weekend to see Furiosa? Let us know in the comments section below.
