A project that has been decades in the making, the most expensive film in the history of producer Charles Band‘s company Full Moon, the stop-motion epic The Primevals made its festival premiere last summer and was given a theatrical release through Alamo Drafthouse cinemas last month. A special edition Blu-ray release from Full Moon is forthcoming – but the Australian company Umbrella Entertainment has already started accepting pre-orders for their Blu-ray release of The Primevals, which has a release date of August 7th!
The Primevals (read our review HERE) was a passion project for visual effects artist David Allen, who earned an Oscar nomination for his work on the 1985 film Young Sherlock Holmes. He spent around twenty years thinking of and working on this sci-fi fantasy film. He first came up with the idea – a film that would combine live action with stop-motion animation to tell a story of time travel, Eskimos, yetis, robots, and giant lizards – in the 1960s or ’70s. Filming of the live action scenes were completed in 1994, and he was working on the special effects right up until he passed away from cancer at the age of 54 in 1999. Then the project sat dormant for almost another twenty years… until Charles Band and Allen’s longtime associate Chris Endicott (Avengers: Infinity War) were able to start putting the finishing touches on the film.
Here’s the official synopsis: Deep in the Himalayas, a group of Sherpas subdue and kill a towering humanoid creature. Its remains — including a brain that appears to have undergone some kind of surgery — wind up under the supervision of Dr. Claire Collier (Juliet Mills), who believes it to be one of the legendary Yeti. Joined by her former student Matt Connor (Richard Joseph Paul), a longtime believer in the creatures’ existence, big-game hunter Rondo Montana (Leon Russom), and others, Dr. Collier leads an expedition into the mountains to track down more of the abominable snowmen. Their trek results in an encounter with a tribe of primitive hominids — which in turn leads to the far more frightening discovery of beings they never could have expected or imagined.
Allen directed the film from a screenplay by Randall William Cook.
Umbrella Entertainment’s Collector’s Edition release of The Primevals contains two different cuts of the film and a feature-length documentary. Here’s the list of extras:

A few days ago, Fangoria ran an article on character actor Ralph Ineson, whose credits include The Witch, The First Omen, Brahms: The Boy II, The Creator, Willow, The Green Knight, and much more, naming him “a modern horror icon.” Ineson took to social media to thank Fangoria for their kind words – and in response to Ineson’s post, director Guillermo del Toro revealed that Ineson has a “pivotal cameo” in his latest film, Frankenstein! He added that Ineson is amazing and fun to work with.
Ineson responded to del Toro, saying, “Thank you Boss, your set is a joyous place to be.”
Del Toro’s Frankenstein, which is a long-awaited passion project for the filmmaker, might have the following logline: Set in Eastern Europe in the 19th Century, the story of Dr. Pretorius, who needs to track down Frankenstein’s monster- who is believed to have died in a fire forty years before–in order to continue the experiments of Dr. Frankenstein.
Ineson’s co-stars include Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), Mia Goth (Pearl), Jacob Elordi (Saltburn), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones). At one point, Andrew Garfield was in the cast, but he had to drop out and was replaced by Elordi… and it has been said that the role Garfield had passed over to Elordi was the Monster.
Del Toro has been talking about making a new version of Frankenstein for more than a decade. Years ago, he had the project set up at Universal, with Doug Jones (The Shape of Water) on board to play Frankenstein’s Monster. The movie got far enough into pre-production that Jones even saw a bust of the Monster that was inspired by Bernie Wrightson’s artwork in an illustrated adaptation of Shelley’s novel that Wrightson spent seven years working on. But then the project fell apart. Now it’s finally happening at the Netflix streaming service, which previously teamed with del Toro on Pinocchio and the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.
Filming on Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein began back in February and is expected to continue into the beginning of July. The movie is being shot in Ontario, Canada, and possibly in London, England as well.

The veteran actor joins Jenna Ortega, Emma Myers, Luis Guzmán, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and others for another round of supernatural hijinks featuring Addams Family members and supernatural citizens of a strange world.
Details for Steve Buscemi’s character remain a mystery, though sources close to the production say he could play the new principal of Nevermore Academy. While the first season ended with Wednesday solving a series of mysterious and gruesome murders, information about Wednesday Season 2 is scarce. Regarding the hit show’s sophomore season, Jenna Ortega says the new season will focus more on horror than romance. So, a little less Riverdale and more of what the Addams Family brand is known for? That sounds promising to me.
Steve Buscemi is famous for starring in films like Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, and Monsters Inc. and TV series such as Miracle Workers, The Sopranos, and Boardwalk Empire. With his unique features, wily energy, and eagerness to embrace the “strange” in cinema, I can’t think of a more perfect addition to Wednesday Season 2.
Vanity Fair asked Ortega about a previous quote where she said Wednesday season 2 would be more episodic, with each episode coming off like a standalone movie, and that it would lean further into horror. She responded, “I’ve just been reading scripts. By the time we actually start shooting, it will have been over two years since we wrapped. So internally, mentally, I’m like, ‘Okay, do I start prepping myself now?’ I don’t consider myself Method or anything like that, but I do think it’s very normal for actors to naturally acclimate or take in the surroundings of their characters, especially when you’re doing something like that for so long. It might be time to start getting a little more sarcastic again or watching different movies again to get into the mindset. But even reading scripts has been exciting, seeing all of the new characters that are coming in. We’re definitely expanding on the supernatural world. Our show had all sorts of werewolves and vampires and da-ta-da. And I think we expand on that a little bit. “
When asked to elaborate on the idea of each episode seeming like a standalone movie, she said, “I mean, in the first season we had episodes that really stood out visually, like the dance episode was a really big one for people, and that setting was very particular and it felt like Prom Night, a little bit, or Carrie. Every episode [of season 2] that I’ve read so far is like that. It just stands out on its own as a very memorable scene or bit or setting, which I think is what I’m most excited for because to pull that off for eight episodes is, I think, really incredible and really lucky.”
