USS Callister, sequel, Black Mirror

The upcoming season of Black Mirror will include a first for the franchise: a sequel. It was officially announced earlier this year that Black Mirror season 7 would include a sequel to the fan-favourite USS Callister episode from the fourth season. The brief synopsis reads: “Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning.

Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker told THR that the USS Callister sequel had “just wrapped” and revealed why he wanted to return to this story.

This has been brewing for actually quite a long time. And it’s partly because of the way that it ends. The first one ends like you could just carry that story on and follow where they go now. So it was always like, ‘Hmm, I’m going to do that,’” Brooker said. “It was something we were looking at for quite a long time. There were various iterations it went through, various versions we wanted to do and were discussing on and off for several years.

Brooker continued: “But there are a lot of schedules to sort out, and then the pandemic got in the way. It was something that looked like it wasn’t going to happen, and so I was delighted when it did. So, it’s been a minute. But even writing the characters is a luxury I don’t often get. I’ve never had it before on Black Mirror, to have a character that survives beyond one episode! So that’s been a lot of fun, and then seeing them all on set has been fantastic.

The original cast, including Cristin Milioti, have returned, but Brooker wouldn’t spill the beans on whether Jesse Plemons (who starred as Captain Robert Daly) would be back as well. “You’ll see. Yeah, you’ll see,” he said with a laugh. “But we continue the story from where we left off. And there are some new characters as well. There is new stuff to do with where they’ve now ended up versus where they were.

As for the other episodes, Brooker wouldn’t drop any hints, only saying he’s really excited about what’s in store for the audience. “I’m always excited about all of them, but I think we have a really good mix. I’m about to start writing the last one, which actually is terrifying because I probably should have written it several weeks ago!” he said. “We have a real mix of things, really exciting castings that have happened. I don’t want to jinx it by saying too much. We’re in the bit that I really like, where you’ve locked an episode, so that’s such a good feeling. We’re doing the final polishing of the score and the mix on one of them. And we are doing something really cool right now that we’ve never done before — but I can’t say what it is.

The seventh season of Black Mirror will be released on Netflix sometime in 2025.

Mike Tyson, Jake Paul, fight, boxing match, postponed, Netflix

The much-anticipated live boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul is being postponed. The event was slated to take place on July 20th, but Tyson’s medical team has requested the delay after the famed boxer experienced a recent ulcer flare-up and needs to take a step back from training to recover.

During a follow-up consultation on Thursday with medical professionals on his recent ulcer flare-up, the recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations,” said event organizer Most Valuable Promotions.

In his own statement, Tyson said, “I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time. Unfortunately, due to my ulcer flare-up, I have been advised by my doctor to lighten my training for a few weeks to rest and recover. My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s, and I will be back to my full training schedule soon. Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end, you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.

Jake Paul added, “My fans know I don’t want to face Iron Mike at anything but his best, but let there be no mistake – when he steps into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my W with a sensational finish. Paul vs Tyson will be one for the ages, and I promise to bring my best for this once-in-a-lifetime matchup.

The match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul will still take place “later this year,” with a new date expected to be announced within the next week or so. The event will be made available to all Netflix subscribers and should prove to be quite the attraction as there are plenty of supporters in both camps.

When the fight was first announced, Gabe Spitzer, the VP of nonfiction sports for Netflix, said, “Mike Tyson is one of the biggest icons in boxing history and Jake Paul is one of the biggest disruptors in boxing history. Saturday, July 20 will be pure drama in the ring in Texas. We are thrilled to partner with Most Valuable Promotions for this historic event and we can’t wait for these two to face off for fans all across the world on Netflix.

Giancarlo Esposito, Captain America: Brave New World, reshoots

According to THR, Captain America: Brave New World has started a round of reshoots in Atlanta, with none other than Giancarlo Esposito joining the cast.

The report states that the reshoots will run for 22 days, with new action sequences being one of the added elements. As for Esposito, his character is being kept under wraps, but sources told THR that it’s a villainous role. The actor has previously teased his involvement in an upcoming Marvel project, hinting that his character is an original creation and “better than you can imagine.” I suppose we’ll see. Esposito has long been rumoured to be a candidate for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with roles such as Professor X brought up as possibilities.

Although there have been rumblings of previous reshoots for Brave New World, the current shoot is reportedly the only one. It will also last less than some of Marvel’s other extensive reshoots, including the six weeks’ worth of additional photography which Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness endured. Matthew Orton, who worked on Marvel’s Moon Knight, was tapped to write the additional scenes for Brave New World.

During CinemaCon earlier this year, Marvel chief Kevin Feige teased that Brave New World is a “relatively grounded action film” similar to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which sounds good to me. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Brave New World star Anthony Mackie echoed that statement. “It made more sense for it to be more of a grounded espionage action movie as opposed to aliens and airplanes coming through portals and sh*t,” Mackie said. “Even though I’ve been in so many of them and have seen it all now, the opportunity for Sam to really establish himself as a true action star and Avenger comes with this movie.

Mackie added: “This movie is a clear reset. It really re-establishes the idea of what this universe is and what this universe is going to be. I think with these movies, you’re getting a clear, new branding of what Marvel is headed towards the same way they did with Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Captain America: Brave New World is currently slated to hit theaters on February 14, 2025.

Venom: The Last Dance, trailer, rumour

With just five months to go until the release of Venom: The Last Dance, we surprisingly know very little about the movie, but that’s all set to change as there have been rumblings that the first trailer will debut next week.

The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) has classified a 2-minute, 27-second trailer for Venom: The Last Dance. Scooper Daniel Richtman narrowed down the release window, saying it will be released on Monday. The trailer is expected to screen in front of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which hits theaters on June 7th.

As I mentioned above, plot details regarding Venom: The Last Dance have been kept under wraps, so it will be nice to finally know a little of what to expect from what’s being billed as the third and final installment of the franchise. Tom Hardy stars as Eddie Brock/Venom, with Juno Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Clark Backo joining him.

Kelly Marcel, who wrote Venom: Let There Be Carnage and co-wrote the first film with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, took over directing duties for Venom: The Last Dance. She also wrote the screenplay based on a story she developed with Tom Hardy. Ruben Fleischer helmed the first Venom movie, while Andy Serkis took the reins for Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Although Serkis was down to return for the third movie, he wound up being too busy with his other projects. “I’ve got so many projects that I was just about to [work on], like ‘Animal Farm‘ for instance,” Serkis said. “We were just about to go into production with that, and then we delayed as ‘Venom‘ came up. I really have to be very on top of the ones that I’ve been building to do for such a long time. But I’m really delighted that Kelly’s doing that. She’s so in control of that material with Tom. The pair of them are such a great team to work with. I’m really excited to see what they’re going to come up with.

Venom: The Last Dance will hit theaters on October 25th, so keep your eye out for the trailer next week.

Jennifer Lopez, summer tour cancelled

Jennifer Lopez has cancelled her summer concert tour less than a month before it was set to begin. The This Is Me… Live Tour was slated to launch on June 26th in Orlando, but Live Nation announced today that it has been cancelled entirely, saying, “Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends.

In a statement on the Jlo newletter, Lopez said, “I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…” Live Nation says that fans who have purchased tickets through Ticketmaster will automatically be refunded, but those who purchased via third-party resale sites, such as SeatGeek, StubHub, VividSeats, etc, will have to reach out to the point purchase for more details.

The tour was set to span the United States, with a brief stop in Canada to hit Toronto and Montreal, but a handful of those dates had already been cancelled, as reports state that ticket sales are poor. There’s also speculation that the rumoured marital issues between Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck could have contributed to the cancellation.

Although Lopez won’t be seen on tour this summer, she does have a brand-new sci-fi movie on Netflix. Atlas premiered on the streaming service last week and finds Lopez starring as a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence who joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. Unfortunately, the film hasn’t received the best reviews, and our own Alex Maidy wasn’t impressed. “Atlas is a special effects-laden foray into the most cliched science fiction genre offering I have seen in a long time,” Maidy wrote. “With what is supposed to be a timely tale about artificial intelligence, Atlas throws every trope from the last fifty years of scifi movies as it aims to be Netflix’s attempt at a summer tentpole picture. Underwhelming in every way, Atlas is a directionless and limp mess that wastes the talents of everyone involved.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here.
