Month: May 2024

Chris Pine would amass a number of successful movies over the years of his career since his breaking out in J.J. Abrams‘ reboot of Star Trek in 2009. The son of CHiPs star Robert Pine had carved out a nice little resume for himself and would make the move to behind the camera as he brought a passion project of his to life with this year’s Poolman. That move was naturally a risk, and unfortunately, Pine’s film would not garner a positive response. Our own Chris Bumbray said in his review, Poolman ranks with the worst movies I’ve ever reviewed at JoBlo. It’s a stunningly unfunny comic noir vanity project for star Chris Pine, who also directed and co-wrote the film. […] it has already become notorious at the festival for the amount of walkouts taking place at the screenings.”

That review would be among a bevy of bad ones, with Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman calling it an “absurdist disaster.” The kind of attention Poolman received was not easy for Pine to ignore. The movie has even yet to be released, and with early harsh buzz, Pine has an interesting task of promoting a movie that has already been notoriously panned. While on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Pine would admit that at one point, he almost submitted to the reception, but he ultimately refuses the criticism, “I watched my film. After the reviews in Toronto I was like maybe I did make a pile of sh*t. I went back and watched it. I fucking love this film. I love this film so much.”

Pine continued to explain his reaction on the matter, “When the film came out at Toronto and just got fucking panned…I tried to make a joyful film. With so much joy behind it, to then be met with a fusillade of not-so-joyous stuff…the cognitive dissonance there was quite something. It’s ultimately been the best thing that’s ever happened to me. It’s forced me to double down on joy and really double down on what I love most about my job, which you kind of forget, it’s fundamentally about play. You become children for hours a day and make believe. There’s an impish quality that I don’t want to lose.”

He continued, “In the reframing of it…one of my favorite quotes is in Latin and it’s ‘vigor grows from the wound,’ In everything that feels like a setback, yes there is the hurt of the cut, but as the scar tissue forms and the healing process happens you do benefit from a growth in resilience.”

Longlegs

Considering how much build-up Longlegs has had – with the stream of teasers, posters and symbols – the horror film had a lot to live up to, at least how it was being marketed. Fortunately for the involved parties, Longlegs looks to be one of the horror flicks to see so far this year, with most praising it for being an unnerving work that features stellar performances and channels The Silence of the Lambs.

Check out some of the early reviews of Longlegs below:

Longlegs follows FBI agent Lee Harker, “a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer. As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family.”

That’s certainly a thrilling concept and one that director Oz Perkins and his cast of Maika Monroe, Nicolas Cage and Alicia Witt have evidently done well with in a fairly economical runtime of 101 minutes. With such strong reactions for Longlegs, there’s not much to decipher in terms of whether or not fans of Perkins and horror movies are digging it.

Perkins has built a solid fanbase since his 2015 debut, The Blackcoat’s Daughter. He followed that up with the next year’s I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House before taking on Gretel & Hansel in 2020. Outside of Longlegs, Perkins – whose history with the horror genre on the big screen goes all the way back to portraying a young Norman Bates in Psycho II (if you didn’t already know, Oz is Anthony’s son) – already has his next picture lined up, with Neon (who is distributing Longlegs as well) backing Keeper. According to Deadline, Keeper “follows a couple as they escape for a romantic anniversary weekend at a secluded cabin. When Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland) suddenly returns to the city, Liz (Tatiana Maslany) finds herself isolated and in the presence of an unspeakable evil that unveils the cabin’s horrifying secrets.”

But right now all of the buzz is on Longlegs, which we’re excited looks to be delivering on everything it has been promising through its marketing campaign. Certainly there are also quite a few more surprises within, further bumping this up the list of our most anticipated horror films of 2024. Longlegs comes to theaters on July 12th.

Are you looking forward to Longlegs? Will you be checking it out on opening weekend? Let us know below!

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, R-rating

This shouldn’t be a big surprise, but it will be a welcome one: Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F has officially been given an R-rating for “language throughout, violence and brief drug use.” Each of the previous three movies in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise was also released with an R-rating, so, as I said, no big surprise.

Nearly thirty years after the last movie’s release, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will find Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) back on the beat in Beverly Hills. The official synopsis reads: “After his daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige) and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.” Mark Molloy directed the Beverly Hills Cop sequel from a screenplay by Will Beall and Tom Gormican & Kevin Etten.

Molloy recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the long-awaited sequel, explaining that he first watched Beverly Hills Cop when he was just 11 or 12 in Australia and that “It just blew me away.

In addition to Eddie Murphy, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F features the return of several original cast members, including Judge Reinhold as Lt. William “Billy” Rosewood, John Ashton as Sgt. John Taggart, Paul Reiser as Det. Jeffrey Friedman, and Bronson Pinchot as Serge. Getting the gang back together was a definite highlight for director Mark Molloy, and he knew he had to put Murphy, Reinhold, and Ashton together to improvise like the old days.

Eddie, John, and Judge sat in the car and they would just talk s—,” Molloy said. “And they told me that a lot of the first film is some of those moments when they were just allowed to sit there and talk to each other. I always had that image of those three guys on a stakeout in the car together, it was just imprinted in my brain. And then I remember sitting with the three of them in that car, and I actually happened to look around at the crew filming it. I just saw on everyone’s faces, like, Oh man, this is exactly where we want to be right now.

Molloy continued: “You’ve got one of the greatest comedians, if not in my eyes, the greatest comedian in the world. A huge part of my job is to create a space for improvisation to thrive. I always want to get what’s on the page, but when you have someone like Eddie Murphy, you want to let him be free. And as I look back on the film, some of the funniest moments in the film is when Eddie is improvising and the audience loves it.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will premiere on Netflix on July 3rd.

Ralph Ineson, Galactus, The Fantastic Four

We finally have a face (and voice) for one of the biggest bad guys in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, as THR reports that Ralph Ineson will play Galactus the Devourer of Worlds in The Fantastic Four.

There had been rumblings that Javier Bardem was being eyed for the role of Galactus, but I’ve got to say that I’m more excited about Ralph Ineson tackling the role, particularly with his wonderful voice. The actor is always a highlight in everything I’ve seen him in, with fantastic roles in The Witch, The Green Knight, The Northman, and the recent First Omen movie. Eagle-eyed fans will know that Ineson has appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before, playing a Ravager pilot in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Exactly who Malkovich will be playing in The Fantastic Four is being kept under wraps, but he joins a cast which includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic; Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman; Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, aka The Thing, Julia Garner as the Shalla-Bal version of the Silver Surfer, and Paul Walter Hauser in an undisclosed role. It was also revealed just hours ago that John Malkovich would also be joining the cast in a mystery role.

The Fantastic Four will launch Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is set to be directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision) from a script by Eric Pearson, Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer. Production is slated to kick off this summer, and Shakman has teased that the movie will be unlike anything we’ve seen from Marvel so far. “It’s different in so many ways,” Shakman said. “I wish I could be specific. I wish I could say more. But we are doing things very differently from a story standpoint, from an approach to the filmmaking standpoint, that really fits the material. I wish I could say more. I would love to, but I can’t. But I think it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve seen before, and certainly unlike anything at Marvel that you’ve seen before. The Fantastic Four will hit theaters on July 25, 2025.

Baby Reindeer, real-life Martha

Based on Richard Gadd’s autobiographical one-man show of the same name, Netflix’s Baby Reindeer is based on Gadd’s real-life experience of being stalked by a woman named Martha. The series has become a huge hit for the streaming service since its debut last month, but the real-life Martha has come forward, slamming her portrayal in the show as “obscene” and “defamatory.

Although Richard Gadd had asked fans not to try to identify the real-life people behind the characters, it didn’t take long for interview sleuths to track down Gadd’s alleged stalker, Scottish lawyer Fiona Harvey. In a recent interview with Piers Morgan, the real-life Martha said that the entire Baby Reindeer series is a work of “hyperbole” and “fiction,” adding that she is considering taking legal action against Netflix.

Netflix has maintained that Baby Reindeer is a “true story” and that it took “every reasonable precaution in disguising the real-life identities of the people involved.” Those precautions obviously weren’t good enough now that Fiona has been identified as Martha. She claims she has been receiving death threats and calls from strangers. “I find it quite obscene. I find it horrifying, misogynistic,” she said. “Some of the death threats have been really terrible online. People phoning me up. You know, it’s been absolutely horrendous.

It’s been alleged that Fiona sent Richard Gadd more than 41,000 emails and 100 letters while stalking him, which she denies. “I didn’t write him the emails,” she said, suggesting that Gadd “probably made them up himself, I’ve no idea.” She later admitted to sending him some “jokey banter emails” but maintained that she had only seen him “five [or] six times” in her life. She also admitted to giving Gadd the “baby reindeer” nickname, which became a running “joke” after he’d “shaved his head.

She added that Gadd is “completely off his head” and accused both him and Netflix of lying. “He is lying and they [Netflix] are lying,” Fiona said. “They have billed it as a true story, so has he, and it’s not. It’s blatantly not. Leave me alone please.” She has claimed that she hasn’t actually watched Baby Reindeer for herself.
