Apple has put out some of the most innovative and memorable commercials ever. We think of the iconic 1984 ad (directed by Ridley Scott, no less) and the early iPod spots with silhouetted music lovers dancing to “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” Now, Apple has done the exact opposite of those, inadvertently pushing people away from the product.

Apple CEO Tim Cook posted the ad – titled “Crush” – on X this week, accompanying it with: “Meet the new iPad Pro: the thinnest product we’ve ever created, the most advanced display we’ve ever produced, with the incredible power of the M4 chip. Just imagine all the things it’ll be used to create.” The ad itself features a wealth of human achievements – from music to mathematics – being crushed in a hydraulic press, ultimately creating the new iPad Pro. That it is set to Sonny and Cher’s “All I Ever Need Is You” definitely has meaning.

The ad caused immediate widespread backlash, with even celebrities – most of whom probably own several Apple products – lashing out at the utterly insulting video. For a few examples, Hugh Grant sounded off by saying it promoted “the destruction of the human experience”, documentarian Asif Kapadia noted just how tone deaf it was and actress Justine Bateman just plain wanted to know what the hell is wrong with Apple. Various commentators have called the ad destructive, egotistical and arrogant.

OK, so it’s pretty obvious the idea here is that Apple is symbolically collecting all of the knowledge ever known to man into a new product. That in and of itself isn’t bad, but the execution here is just about the most disgusting way to go about it. The way the Apple ad comes off, all of the featured advances in humanity are disposable, just footnotes that can be squeezed of their soul, meaning and purpose just for the sake of promoting a “thinpossible” piece of 5.3mm-thick piece of technology that will be intentionally outdated in due time. Take a look at the emoji’s face near the end and that’s basically the collective reaction.

What do you make of Apple’s latest ad? Did they completely miss the mark or did they reach their target audience?

It’s almost time for the Fantasia Film Festival! North America’s premiere genre festival has become the place to be if you’re a horror aficionado, and as a proud Montrealer, I get a kick out of the fact that it all takes place in my home city. I’ve been attending the festival for many years, and I always end up seeing some incredible movies. Last year’s Fantasia featured the world premiere of what’s probably the best horror movie of the last year or so – Late Night With The Devil, and this year’s program seems certain to be another winner, with Fantasia announcing the first wave of titles today.

Here are some of the highlights:

Witchboard:

Before directing big-budget Hollywood flicks like The Mask and Eraser, Chuck Russell made his reputation with a pair of the best horror flicks of the 80s, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors and The Blob. Now, he’s returning to the genre with a remake of the cult classic Witchboard which, appropriately enough, was shot in Montreal. Here’s the synopsis:

Emily (Madison Iseman, ANNABELLE COMES HOME) and her fiancé Christian (Aaron Dominguez, Hulu’s Only Murderers in the Building) discover an ancient Wiccan artifact, a pendulum board, as they prepare to open a bistro in New Orleans’ French Quarter. Emily becomes obsessed with the board’s powers, exposing her to the ancient spirit of the Queen of Witches. Desperate to help his fiancé, Christian seeks the advice of occult expert Alexander Babtiste (Jamie Campbell Bower, Netflix’s Stranger Things, the TWILIGHT saga), but Babtiste has dark secrets of his own.

Shelby Oaks:

YouTuber Chris Stuckman makes his feature debut as a director, appropriately, with a movie about a famous YouTube who investigates paranormal happenings. Mike Flanagan signed on to this one as a producer and it’ll be interesting to see if Stuckman can make the leap to horror auteur.

Dark Match:

The director of Wolfcop returns with an outrageous mash-up of 80s wrestling and horror. None other than WWE superstar Chris Jericho stars, but what’s really intriguing about this one is that it has cinematography by Karim Hussain, who’s shot some of the best looking horror flicks of the last few years, including Possessor and Infinity Pool.

The Dead Thing:

I’m a die-hard listener of the Pure Cinema Podcast, which is sponsored by Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema. One of that show’s hosts, Elric Kane, directed this movie which explores one of the scariest aspects of 21st century dating – APPS!

Other films include Rita, from the director of La Llorona, This Man (a J-Horror Western horror mashup), A Samurai in Time (from the director of Gohan), the Shudder production Hell Hole, and many more. Check out the full first-wave lineup at Fantasia’s official site.

Which movie do you think has the chance to really break out this year? Let us know in the comments!

grace caroline currey, the breed

In an interesting bit of remake news, a 2006 film that was produced by horror icon Wes Craven will be remade for a new horror reimagining. The Breed starred Fast & Furious family member Michelle Rodriguez and Oliver Hudson. Variety reports that director brothers Sean and Bryan Furst will be sitting in the director seats for the new incarnation, which has been described as an “unconventional reimagining of the Wes Craven cult classic.” The brothers will produce the horror film together through their company, Curmudgeon Films.

It has also now being said that Grace Caroline Currey, who is known as Mary in both Shazam and Shazam: Fury of the Gods, as well as starring in 2022’s suspense flick Fall, is set to star in the remake for the Furst brothers. The plot of the movie revolves around Currey’s character Violet, who is “a rebel icon and badass on a mission to search for abandoned dogs on a remote island which leads to complete adrenaline-fueled terror.” The description, “A rebel icon and a badass on a mission,” sounds almost like it was pitched by Rob McElhenny’s character, Mac, from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

The plot to the 2006 original that starred Rodriguez and Hudson and was directed by Nicolas Mastandrea read, “Two close brothers, Matt and John head to an exotic island for a week of fun and relaxation. Joined by Matt’s girlfriend Nicki, Sara, and a friend Noah, the group intend on having a week of relaxation, fun and spending quality time together. However, after one of them is viciously attacked by a dog, the friends decide to leave the island early – only to find their sea plane set adrift by the dogs. As the day goes on, the friends find themselves fighting for their lives against a vicious pack of mutated dogs who don’t intend on the group making it out alive off the island…”

The Furst brothers will be making their directorial debut with this film. However, they are well acquainted with the horror world as their resume includes producing credits on Renfield and Daybreakers. They are also known for producing non-horror movies like The Cooler and The Matador.
