Matarazzo Stranger Things

Stranger Things might be the name of his show, but Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson) has experienced some of the strangest things you can as a teenage celebrity. One encounter with a fan in particular shook him…because she was three times his age.

Appearing on the Inside of You podcast (via Us Weekly), Matarazzo – who was 13 when Stranger Things premiered – said he met one fan who really caught him off guard…in about the creepiest way possible. “I did one very recently — and this is not very funny, but the reactions around it were quite funny — where this woman in her 40s said straight up, ‘I’ve had a crush on you since you were 13.’ And I was like, ‘That’s upsetting.’” But it gets worse…As Matarazzo added of his middle-aged Stranger Things fan, “She was like, ‘I’m aware of the age difference.’ And then I was like, ‘Alright.’ And her daughter was with her, and her daughter goes, ‘Mom, what the f*ck?’ I swear to God.”

Not that we need to even really ask this, but what is wrong with some fans? Maybe the woman meant, as Matarazzo pointed out, that she thought he was adorable on Stranger Things, but there is an entirely different way to say that – especially when the actor is in front of his own mom!

Matarazzo, showing genuine maturity for someone who started in the business as a pre-teen before landing Stranger Things, is also well aware that he hasn’t had a normal life, whether he’s being hit on by wacko moms or not. “When you are that young, you can’t really reflect or understand how incredible that [level of success] is for your family and you…But then there is a part of it where you are that young and you are suddenly the breadwinner for your family when you are 12. That is not something that is normal.”

Gaten Matarazzo will return to the realm of abnormal when Stranger Things sometime next year (it’s not unreasonable to expect summer or October). While various delays due to everything from Covid-19 to the dual WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes have postponed the past couple of seasons, we have at least had some updates from the Duffer Brothers as of late by way of new photos. There has also been talk that this fifth and final season will offer some character dynamics that will give a season one feel. Hey, that’s when this lady started crushing on Dustin!

Variety has broken the news that there’s a new horror film called Murder with the Stars heading our way – and this one’s coming from an unexpected creative team. Actor Jonathan Silverman, who is best known for his work in comedies like Caddyshack II and the Weekend at Bernie’s duology, will be directing the film, which is being produced by Jeff Franklin, the creator of the TV show Full House and its follow-up Fuller House!

Comedian Craig Shoemaker has written the screenplay… so, while the project isn’t being referred to as a horror comedy at this time, we can probably expect to see a good amount of comedy in the finished product. Shoemaker has previously written episodes of Just the Ten of Us and Fuller House, as well as the films The Lovemaster and Totally Baked.

Shoemaker told Variety, “This concept came to me several months ago, and I knew I was onto something unique and fun. Since then, the creative process has unfolded effortlessly with two old friends signing on, Jonathan Silverman and Jeff Franklin. It’s a killer team. In the case of this horror film, pun intended.” He did not reveal what the concept is, but maybe there’s a clue in the title’s similarity to Dancing with the Stars.

Shoemaker is producing Murder with the Stars alongside Franklin. The project is being made in partnership with Jaclyn and Ike Suri of Pelican Point Media, a film finance and production company that has produced other horror and comedy films. This isn’t the first genre project Franklin has worked on, as his credits also include Raptor Island, Planet Raptor, and Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys.

Silverman will be acting in the film, in addition to directing it. He has over 120 screen acting credits to his name, but has only ventured into horror territory a few times. He did recently have a role on the “gateway horror” TV show Goosebumps. He made his feature directorial debut with the comedy Another Dirty Movie in 2012 and followed that up by co-directing the romantic comedy The Opposite Sex with his wife Jennifer Finnigan in 2014.

Under Paris

Under Paris, a shark thriller from genre regular Xavier Gens, is set to be released through the Netflix streaming service on June 5th – but producers Sébastien Auscher and Edouard Duprey have been hit with a parasitism lawsuit filed by filmmaker Vincent Dietschy, who claims that Under Paris resembles a project called Silure, which he began working on in 2011. According to Deadline, if a judge rules in favor of Dietschy at the initial hearing on June 14th, Netflix might have to remove Under Paris just days after its release, as Dietschy’s lawyer has requested that the release of the film be suspended while the parasitism lawsuit makes its way through the court system.

Dietschy says he registered Silure with France’s rights management body SACD in 2012. Going by article 1240 of France’s Civil Code, parasitism is what it’s called when “one party follows in the footsteps of another party’s efforts and know-how to benefit from their enterprise without seeking permission or making payment.” Dietschy believes that Auscher and Duprey learned about Silure after he pitched it to an agent in 2014 and a dossier that included a 23 page treatment was sent around to other producers in 2015. Inspired by Jaws, Silure told the story of a young policewoman, a diver at the Paris River brigade, who finds herself confronted with an unprecedented natural phenomenon, embodied by a gigantic catfish, terribly aggressive and a killer of human beings. While the monster sows panic in the capital, threatening the mayor’s policies a few days before the choice of the city that will organize the Olympic Games, the heroine finds herself on the front line to face this figure of evil of a new kind. Helped in her fight by a young ichthyologist from the CNRS (National Scientific Research Centre) she becomes closer at the same time to her hierarchical superior, the commander.

Under Paris, of course, focuses on a shark rather than a catfish. The film has the following synopsis: Set in the Summer of 2024, the film unfolds in Paris which is hosting the World Triathlon Championships on the Seine for the first time. Sophia, a brilliant scientist, learns from Mika, a young environmental activist, that a large shark is swimming deep in the river. To avoid a bloodbath at the heart of the city, they have no choice but to join forces with Adil, the Seine river police commander.

Bérénice Bejo, who earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in the silent film The Artist, Léa Léviant of Mortel, and Nassim Lyes of Overdose star. Gens’ previous directorial credits include the films Frontier(s), Hitman, The Divide, The Crucifixion, Cold Skin, Budapest, and Mayhem!, plus episodes of the shows Mortel, Gangs of London, and Crossing Lines. Gens also directed the X is for XXL segment of the horror anthology The ABCs of Death.

Auscher and Duprey, who first announced they were working on a shark thriller together in 2015, deny they were ever aware of Silure before making Under Paris: “We had never heard of Silure until the formal notice we received last year from Mr. Dietschy’s Counsel. Under Paris is an original project, and we’ll exercise our right to defend ourselves in the court proceedings brought by Mr. Dietschy. We will be asking the Court to award us significant damages for defamation, because we’re facing a very aggressive, totally unfounded procedure, which has caused significant harm, reputationally and professionally.

Dietschy’s lawyer Maître Héloïse de Castelnau expects the lawsuit to go on for a while: “Parasitism is where you use other people’s work, without making an exact copy… it will be a long and drawn-out case due to the analysis of the contracts and paperwork involved, and I wouldn’t expect a judgement for at least a year.” De Castelnau is hoping to keep Netflix from releasing Under Paris because “its diffusion represents an problem for my client.

Are you looking forward to Under Paris? Do you think Netflix should hold off on the release until this lawsuit is resolved? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Wake Up Dead Man, Jeremy Renner, Knives Out 3, Rian Johnson, Netflix

The next installment of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out film series, Wake Up Dead: A Knives Out Mystery, hit the bullseye on Thursday by adding Avengers and Mayor of Kingstown actor Jeremy Renner to its cast. The beloved actor, who recently recovered from a near-fatal snow plow accident in January 2023, joins previously announced castmembers Kerry Wahington, Glenn Close, Josh O’Connor, Cailee Spaeny, and Andrew Scott, with Daniel Craig reprising his role as the Foghorn Leghorn soundalike detective Benoit Blanc.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery marks Jeremy Renner’s first feature film since returning to work. In January 2023, the snow plow accident caused Renner to break 38 bones and puncture his lung while one of his eyes popped out of its socket. His inspirational recovery has been the talk of Hollywood since the incident occurred, with many of his closest co-stars and friends offering well-wishes to pump him up. His progress is remarkable after such extreme injuries, and it’s great to see him back at what he does best.

Plot details for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery remain scarce, though it’s safe to assume more intriguing stars will join the cast in the coming weeks. The first film in the series, Knives Out, occurred in a stately manor and revolved around a corrupt and toxic family’s dark secrets and desires. In contrast, the second chapter, Glass Onion, finds Benoit Blanc traveling to a remote island to disrupt a posh dinner party with murder on the menu. While Knives Out debuted exclusively in theaters, Netflix paid $450 million for two sequels.

This Sunday, Jeremy Renner returns to television with the Season 3 premiere of Taylor Sheridan’s Mayor of Kingstown. Renner plays Mike McLusky in the gritty crime drama, which revolves around the McLusky family, a familial unit of power brokers tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption, and inequality in Kingstown, Michigan, where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry.

What do you think about Jeremy Renner joining the cast of Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery? Where do you think the plot will take place? Let’s see your predictions in the comments section below.
