Elizabeth Banks and John C. Reilly team up for a psychological thriller, titled DreamQuil. The movie will be the debut of U.S. filmmaker and contemporary artist Alex Prager. Deadline has reported that Paramount’s Republic Pictures has just purchased the North American rights to the film in pre-sales. In addition, HanWay has also closed deals at international markets, which include companies like The Jokers (France), TFG (Greece), Mars (Turkey), MCF (Former Yugoslavia), Arthouse Traffic (Ukraine), Front Row (Middle East), Cinesky (Airlines) and Shaw (Singapore).

The movie has currently commenced filming in LA. And the synopsis, per Deadline, reads, “Set in the not so distant future, pic charts the story of Carol (Banks), a dissatisfied career mother, who is struggling to find real connection within her marriage to Gary (Reilly) and to her child. Worried that she could be heading towards divorce, Carol leaps at the chance to get her life back on track by signing up for DreamQuil’s unconventional digital wellness retreat. However, things take a sinister turn upon Carol’s homecoming, and the story has been described as a cautionary tale about what happens when Artificial Intelligence and automation are integrated into our daily lives.”

Patriot Pictures is now set produce DreamQuil alongside Brownstone Productions, Landay Entertainment, and Big Valley Pictures. Michael Mendelsohn (Lord of War) of Patriot Pictures is on board and will be joining producers Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman and Alison Small for Brownstone Productions (Pitch Perfect), director Alex Prager for his company Big Valley Pictures, as well as Oscar nominee Vincent Landay (Being John Malkovich) of Landay Entertainment.

Meanwhile, Banks will also be starring alongside Jessica Biel for another thriller titled The Better Sister for Prime Video. This will be a series that Banks will be executive producing and is based on the novel by bestselling author Alafair Burke. Burke will also be consulting on the series about the terrible things that drive sisters apart and ultimately bring them back together. The plot for the series reads, “Chloe (Biel) moves through the world with her handsome lawyer husband Adam and teenage son Ethan by her side while her estranged sister Nicky (Banks) hustles to make ends meet while trying to stay clean. When Adam is brutally murdered, the prime suspect sends shockwaves through the family, laying bare long-buried secrets.”

The Minions are going Marvel for Illumination‘s Despicable Me 4 by getting the Super Soldier treatment in a new trailer! It’s been roughly two years since Minions: The Rise of Gru, and younger generations are clamoring for more outlandish antics from Gru’s pill-shaped helpers with a penchant for madness. The new film introduces another addition to the chaotic-good family, with Gru and Lucy welcoming a son. He’s a mama’s boy through and through, but that won’t keep Gru from vying for his love and adoration.

Despicable Me 4 finds Steve Carell reprising his role as the reformed villain Gru. Throughout the Despicable Me series of films, Gru has left a life of villainy behind in favor of becoming a father, husband, and secret agent. Of course, Gru’s hapless yet helpful helpers, the Minions, will also return in the sequel. Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin, Miranda Cosgrove, and Steve Coogan are also returning. Chris Renaud (Despicable Me 1 and 2, The LoraxThe Secret Lives of Pets 1 and 2) is directing Despicable Me 4, with animation director Patrick Delage (Sing, Sing 2) co-directing.

Despicable Me 4, trailer, Illumination

In the Despicable Me 4 trailer, Gru’s been compromised, and a villain named Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) is on the loose! Together with his companion Valentina (Sofia Vergara), Maxim unleashes hell on San Francisco using titanic robots and the latest tools of his evil trade. To help Gru, Lucy, and the family from landing in hot water, five Minions “volunteer” to launch a rescue mission. To prepare for the battle, the Minions go full Steve Rogers to gain superpowers. As the Minions learn to use their new gifts, anything and everything goes wrong because it’s the Minions. What did you expect?

I can’t help but enjoy the Despicable Me franchise. I know the Minions are old hat for some of us (especially for parents), but there’s excellent humor and slick animation with every film in the series. I enjoy Gru. I love Lucy and can never get enough of the troublesome trio: Poppy, Agnes, and Margo. Despicable Me 4 looks like a total blast, and it’s coming to theaters on July 3, 2024!

There are few names as big within the world of cinema as Cronenberg. David Cronenberg has been shocking audiences for decades, with his son Brandon taking up the mantle himself. Now, Caitlin Cronenberg follows in her family’s footsteps making her directorial debut, Humane. You can check out my review for the film HERE and hopefully will check out the film yourself. It’s such a terrifying look at a climate-battered world and the messed up solutions a fascist government would take. And it takes some unexpected turns.

I was lucky enough to chat with Caitlin about Humane and I proceeded to gush about the film for 15 minutes. It’s a rare opportunity to be able to discuss such a thought-provoking movie with the filmmakers themselves. So I fully took advantage of it, inquiring about the worldbuilding and if she felt any pressure due to her family name. Because Humane isn’t quite what you would expect it to be, as she’s a very different filmmaker from her father or brother. But I’d argue that just makes her all the more exciting of a filmmaker. With Humane being such a solid debut, I can’t wait to see what she brings us next.

Humane plot:

In the wake of an environmental collapse that is forcing humanity to shed 20% of its population, a family dinner erupts into chaos when a father’s plan to enlist in the government’s new euthanasia program goes horribly awry.

HUMANE IS PLAYING IN THEATERS ON APRIL 26TH, 2024 AND STREAMS ON SHUDDER ON JULY 26TH, 2024.

the guyver movie

Some of you may be asking yourselves, “What’s The Guyver?” But, I suspect if you were a kid in the nineties, you know EXACTLY who and what The Guyver is.

When I was growing up, my parents subscribed to the Canadian version of HBO, which was called The Movie Network. The mixture of programming on the channel was eclectic, to say the least, and the blockbusters were padded out with many direct-to-video tiles, usually in the erotic thriller or action genres. Folks like Shannon Tweed, Lorenzo Lamas, and others became pretty common to see pop up on the channel. Occasionally, one of these movies would feature a bigger star and sometimes turn out to be a real gem.

With that in mind, I remember vividly as a kid tuning in to watch The Guyver because it was promoted as a superhero movie starring Mark Hamill. While that’s maybe “partly” true, as an eleven-year-old, my brain wasn’t quite ready for the whacked-out madness delivered by co-directors Screaming Mad George and Steve Wang.

The Guyver is a 1991 flick loosely based on a Japanese Manga, which was initially put out (in a heavily truncated version) by New Line Cinema on home video. It did well enough to get a sequel, Guyver: Dark Hero, but it’s a movie that hasn’t been super easy to see over the years – until now that is.

Unearthed Films, the same label that rescued Martin Campbell’s awesome No Escape, is putting out The Guyver in fresh 4K edition packed with extras. Here’s the details:

When college student Sean Barker (Jack Armstrong) finds the Guyver, an alien device that transforms him into a cyborg fighting machine, he inadvertently makes himself a target of the evil Chronos Corporation, who will stop at nothing to get the Guvyer back, including kidnapping Sean’s girlfriend Mizuki (Vivian Wu). Sean’s only hope is a mysterious CIA agent named Max Reed (Mark Hamill). Together they fight to save Mizuki, keep the Guyver out of Chronos’ hands and stop their ultimate goal of world domination. Directed by Screaming Mad George (Freaked) and Steve Wang (Drive) and produced by Brian Yuzna (Re-Animator, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids) The Guyver is an epic superhero action adventure that you won’t soon forget.

The 4K UHD + Blu-ray + CD Soundtrack Limited Collector’s Edition includes new commentary with co-directors Screaming Mad George and Steve Wang, a new interview with producer Brian Yuzna and co-director Screaming Mad George, outtakes with commentary by co-directors Screaming Mad George and Steve Wang, a new gag reel, a new production and artwork gallery, an alternate title sequence, trailers, and The Guyver soundtrack, composed by Matthew Morse.

The Guyver hits 4K disc on June 25th. Here’s the cover art:
