Disney has been trying to get back on track as their acquired properties have taken hits over the years. Marvel Studios is a big brand that audiences have voted against with their wallets lately. With projects like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels underperforming at the box office, many people debated whether superhero fatigue had finally set in. When Bob Iger returned to run the House of Mouse, the CEO had voiced his concerns over the quantity of material that Marvel and Star Wars had been releasing. He had also championed films focusing on story rather than messages.

Iger had long pledged to reduce the number of projects that Marvel and Star Wars produce. According to Variety, in the company’s quarterly earnings call on Tuesday, the CEO said, “We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three. And we’re working hard on what that path is.” Iger stated that Marvel Studios has “a couple of good films in ’25 and then we’re heading to more Avengers, which we’re extremely excited about. Overall, I feel great about the slate. It’s something that I’ve committed to spending more and more time on. The team is one that I have tremendous confidence in and the IP that we’re mining, including all the sequels that we’re doing, is second to none.”

This announcement comes after the long-reported projects that include the postponed Captain America: Brave New World, as well as Thunderbolts and the newly announced The Fantastic Four, along with the stop-starting of the new Blade reboot. Additionally, the studio has been planning for an upcoming Avengers movie that was to include the character of Kang, which is a whole ‘nother bag of worms that Marvel is currently rebounding from.

Later in the quarterly earnings call, Iger also addressed Disney’s output of remakes and live-action adaptations versus original material. The CEO says the current concentration is on Disney franchises, “We’re gonna balance sequels with originals. Specifically in animation, we had gone through a period where our original films and animation, both Disney and Pixar, were dominating. We’re now swinging back a bit to lean on sequels.”

With Robert Downey Jr. finally winning an Oscar for Oppenheimer and co-starring in the acclaimed HBO miniseries The Sympathizer, Awfully Good Movies is looking back at RDJ’s first and failed attempt at a post-Marvel franchise in the failed family fantasy Dolittle!

Right after Tony Stark’s epic exit from the MCU, Downey hopped on to star in and co-produce alongside his wife Susan a new adaptation of Hugh Lofting’s children’s book series about the veterinarian who can talk all the languages of his animal patients, this time without any overlong musical numbers from Rex Harrison or silly mugging from Eddie Murphy. However, much like the 1998 version, Dolittle’s animals would be voiced by a huge array of talented actors, including RDJ’s former Avengers co-star Tom Holland and future Oppenheimer co-star Rami Malek, and the long-awaited teaming of Dame Emma Thompson and John Cena that we’ve yet to see at a WrestleMania event.

But thanks to some obvious rewrites from Chris McKay of Lego Batman and Renfield, these CGI’ed animals making Rush Hour references in Victorian London all but ruin whatever fantastical charm that Oscar-winning director Stephen Gaghan and Downey were going for, along with RDJ’s obviously dubbed Welsh accent belongs in the pantheon of bad accents next to Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. And the rest of the talented live-action cast–Michael Sheen, Jim Broadbent, Antonio Banderas as the sexiest pirate since Jack Sparrow–are all wasted as the voice cast on a confused mess that has RDJ going full… well, you know.

Thank God for Christopher Nolan helping to sober up Robert once more, because even with the other two Dolittle films not being particularly good, this version has a particular emphasis on the “DOO” in Dolittle. If animals could indeed talk, they’d surely demand a better movie than this.

Michelle Yeoh has come quite a long way from the days of Yes, Madam and Police Story 3: Supercop. While the Malaysian actress used to fight alongside stars like Cynthia Rothrock and Jackie Chan in some of the best martial arts movies to come out of Hong Kong, today she’s broken out into dramas and sci-fi projects in addition to action. Deadline reports that the Academy Award-winning star of Everything Everywhere All at Once is now set to star in the sequel series, Blade Runner 2099, for Prime Video.

The details have been shrouded in mystery as of now. However, the year in the title implies a significant jump in time from the last sequel, Blade Runner 2049. The Denis Villeneuve film brought in talents like Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto and Ana De Armas. It would also see Harrison Ford return to the role of Dekker. Blade Runner 2099 was originally slated to start shooting in Belfast last summer, but the Hollywood strikes put a stop to that. The push also found the series moving out of Belfast in favor of Prague. Shining Girls creator Silka Luisa is the writer, showrunner, and executive producer of the series. Original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott is also onboard as an executive producer through his Scott Free production banner.

“The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers,” said Amazon Studios head of global television Vernon Sanders when the project was announced in 2022. “We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.“

“We are delighted to continue our working relationship with our friends at Amazon. And we are beyond excited to continue to extend the Blade Runner canon into a new realm with the provocative storyline that Silka has created,” Alcon Entertainment co-CEOs and co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson said. “Audiences first discovered Ridley Scott’s brilliant vision for Blade Runner 40 years ago, and since then, it has become one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time. Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up sequel, Blade Runner 2049, then became one of the best-reviewed sequels of all time. So, we recognize that we have a very high bar to meet with this next installment. Together with Silka and our partners at Amazon, and Scott Free Productions, we hope that we can live up to that standard and delight audiences with the next generation of Blade Runner.“

Money is imaginary, and yet we imagine the worst possible version. As we all agree to pretend that swapping numbers on a computer, or paper and metal in person, makes sense as a transaction for goods, we also for some reason pretend that said goods get more expensive. As a result of this, Games Workshop is putting its…
