The Bride of Frankenstein

Nobody was expecting it, but it’s true: two-time Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal – who earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her performance in the 2010 film Crazy Heart and a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for writing her 2021 feature directorial debut The Lost Daughter – is writing and directing a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein  (watch it HERE). The Bride! is currently making its way through production and unveiling images that are intriguing, even if there are jarring elements to them. So we thought this was a good time to put together a list of Everything We Know About The Bride!

STUDIO AND RELEASE DATE

The Bride! is not set up at Universal Pictures, so this isn’t an official remake of The Bride of Frankenstein, it’s a play on the same concepts found in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein that inspired the 1935 film. This isn’t the first Bride of Frankenstein remake to be made by a different company. In 1985, Columbia Pictures brought us another movie simply called The Bride, which starred Sting as Baron Charles Frankenstein, Jennifer Beals as Eva (the bride) and Clancy Brown as Viktor (the monster). A few years ago, it was announced that Scarlett Johansson was going to star in a similar project called Bride for A24 and Apple, but that still hasn’t made it into production. Universal has never made an official remake of the film, but that’s not to say they haven’t tried. A new Bride of Frankenstein has been drifting in and out of development hell at Universal for decades. Interview with the Vampire author Anne Rice even wrote a screenplay for the re-do at one point, and during the Dark Universe days, Universal was developing a remake that was set to be directed by Bill Condon – who seemed to be the perfect choice, since he had directed the film Gods and Monsters, about the final days of Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein director James Whale. David Koepp has written the script, Angelina Jolie and Gal Gadot were in the running to play The Bride. But then the Dark Universe crumbled and those plans were scrapped.

Gyllenhaal’s Bride was originally rumored to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, but it has ended up at Warner Bros., with the studio planning to give the film a theatrical release, IMAX screens included, on October 3, 2025.

STORY

While the original story took place in Europe during the 1800s, Gyllenhaal has updated the concept, but hasn’t exactly modernized it. Her version moves the setting to America – Chicago, to be exact – in the 1930s. Despite the Chicago setting, the movie is actually being filmed in New York.

The story Gyllenhaal crafted for The Bride! has the following synopsis: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.

The Bride Jessie Buckley

CAST

As you would expect, the Oscar-nominated actress-turned-writer/director has managed to assemble a strong cast for the project. The first two cast members to sign on were her The Dark Knight co-star Christian Bale and her husband Peter Sarsgaard. Penelope Cruz, Jessie Buckley, Annette Bening, Julianne Hough, John Magaro, and Jeannie Berlin quickly joined them. When Cruz first joined the project, a production listing mistakenly had her down as playing the titular Bride, but that’s not the case. We don’t have details on all of the characters, but Peter Sarsgaard is rumored to be playing a detective, and we do know that the Bride, who may be named Myrna, is being played by Jessie Buckley, while Christian Bale takes on the role of Frankenstein’s Monster. During the build-up to the start of filming, Bale revealed that he would have to shave his head for the role – and jokingly said he might have to get on the rack, break his bones, and eat lots of fertilizer in order to grow and stretch to the proper height to play the character, who was described as being eight feet tall in Shelley’s novel.

The Bride Christian Bale

IMAGES

As filming began, Gyllenhaal took to Instagram to share camera test images of Buckley as the Bride and Bale as the Monster. Spy pics of Buckley and Bale made up as their character on the set of the film later gave us a more revealing look at the pair. Buckley’s character wears a metal leg brace and has an untidy look; messy clothes, wild hair (as you would hope to see from the Bride), and she appears to be leaking some kind of black substance from a few different points on her body. Bale’s Monster has dirty, well-worn clothes and scars where his body was built out of stitched-together pieces taken from various corpses. The controversial part of his design, an element that has some comparing him to the likes of Jared Leto’s Joker and Bill Skarsgard’s Eric Draven, is a tattoo on his chest: the word “Hope.”

From these images, we can already tell that this version of the Bride and the Monster have a lot more fun together than the versions played by Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester did.

And that’s everything we know about The Bride! at this point. Does this sound like a movie you’ll be wanting to check out on the big screen during Halloween season in 2025? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Tom Burke furiosa

When a prequel to 2015’s runaway (or is that drive away?) hit Mad Max: Fury Road was announced, we knew there had to be a wealth of new characters. And Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has made good, with Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke being the most notable additions – outside of Furiosa herself, Anya Taylor-Joy, of course.

Chris Hemsworth has spoken about his character, Warlord Dementus, at length before, calling him “a pretty horrible individual”, something Hemsworth isn’t entirely used to. Similarly, Tom Burke had a challenge ahead of himself on the opposite side of the spectrum, as he was approached by Furiosa director George Miller with the “noble” and “heroic” Praetorian Jack.

tom burke furiosa

While CinemaCon gave fans a better look at Tom Burke’s role in Furiosa, he went into more detail with Entertainment Weekly about Jack, who he says was the exact opposite of what he was expecting to be when Miller first introduced him to the role. “I’d convinced myself that I’d be playing somebody probably fairly grotesque and covered in boils … maybe you wouldn’t even see most of me, I’d be sort of inside an old, rusted-up, converted, pimped-up washing machine or something. I just thought, ‘Oh, here we go.’ I mean, obviously, I was excited, but I was really happy that it was [not that].”

As for more details on Praetorian Jack – who Tom Burke helped develop alongside Miller while making Furiosa – the actor said, “George’s idea, which is alluded to in the script, is that Jack is very much from a military family and that they perhaps knew Immortan Joe before he was the Immortan Joe, and that there was a journey to the Citadel and a certain idea of what that life might be that was very different from what it turned out to be, and sort of charting how that happened.” He, too, has a strong connection with Furiosa herself, with a relationship that he says “gives a really nice context to some of the dynamic she has with Max in Fury Road.”

Furiosa was already one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, but now that we have a better look at some of these new characters, our engines are revved even more. What a lovely day!

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will have its premiere at this month’s Cannes Film Festival, where it is screening out of competition. After that, it will hit theaters on May 29th.

Rumer Bruce

We here at JoBlo.com are massive fans of Bruce Willis, so we love anytime we hear positive news on his health, having been diagnosed with first aphasia and then later frontotemporal dementia. Fortunately, the family of Bruce Willis has been open and transparent with his condition, with oldest daughter Rumer Willis providing updates when appropriate. The latest is definitely an uplifting one, with Rumer touching on the importance of family and fans.

Speaking with Extra, Rumer Willis confirmed that Bruce is “doing so good. I got to go over and see him today, which was so lovely and so nice to see him with my daughter and just go over and give love.” She added, “As a family, especially my sisters and I, we’re just so grateful for the love that comes at him. I think it is such a reflection of who he is.”

It’s always nice to see people come together to support those they love. In addition to Rumer, Bruce Willis’ current wife Emma Heming Willis has more or less been in charge of public relations when it comes to news of Bruce’s condition. At the same time, even his ex-wife, Demi Moore – who has remained close with Bruce for the better part of the decades since their 2000 divorce – has shown her undying support. Last Father’s Day, Rumer Willis paid tribute to Bruce with touching words and a generational pic of herself, Bruce and her daughter Louetta. With Father’s Day next month, we certainly expect to see the same.

The news that Bruce Willis’ health had been declining and that he was retiring from acting – after stockpiling dozens of direct-to-video movies, which we would later learn was something of a retirement fund – was devastating for his fans. But we became fans because of all the work that came before it and we are forever grateful for John McClane, Butch Coolidge, Korben Dallas, Malcolm Crowe, Jimmy the Tulip, David Addison, and so, so many more.

Which performances of Bruce Willis’ remain your favorite? Give us your top 3 in the comments section below, and while you’re there, send your own positive vibes to the legendary star.

the fall guy, ryan gosling, emily blunt

With great reviews, tons of publicity, and two more-popular-than-ever movie stars in the leads, The Fall Guy should have kicked the summer 2024 box office off in high style. Indeed, Hollywood was expecting a $40 million opening (we expected a more modest $35 million). Still, according to Deadline’s early numbers, The Fall Guy looks like it won’t even crack the $30 million mark. This is a bad opening for a mega-budget action movie and seems to be further evidence that movie stars – as we used to know them – don’t exist anymore.

Think about it. Is there any actor or actress who can guarantee a movie “opens”? It used to be that people like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Julia Roberts, Clint Eastwood, Tom Cruise, and a bunch of others were considered “bankable” in that having them in your film was basically “money in the bank.” There’s not really anyone like that left anymore, with audiences, perhaps, taking their new stars for granted.

Why?

Part of it has to do with streaming. While Emily Blunt has been in many box office hits, she also did a streaming show (The English) that went totally under the radar, and no one seemed to watch her Netflix movie, Pain Hustlers. The same goes for Ryan Gosling. Barbie was huge, but did anyone really watch The Grey Man on Netflix? And before you go saying Gosling is nothing without his Barbie co-star Margot Robbie, consider that the two movies she made just before that one were box office disasters, Amsterdam and Babylon.  It also doesn’t help how small release windows have gotten. Why would people shell out money to see The Fall Guy in theaters when they know there’s a good chance that they’ll be able to see it at home within six weeks? If anything, its poor box office showing guarantees it’ll be available digitally that much sooner.

Whatever the case may be, this is an ominous start to the summer of 2024, with only Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine being considered a super sure thing at the box office. The rest of the weekend isn’t much better. While Zendaya’s Challengers is expected to have a decent hold in second place, the new horror flick, Tarot (which was eviscerated on our first horror live stream last night) is a disaster with a $6.25 million weekend in the cards (pun intended). It’s being beaten by the Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace re-release, which should make over $7 million.

When the first trailer for Disney Plus’s new Star Wars series, The Acolyte, dropped this winter, it raked up more views in its first 24 hours than any other Star Wars series to date. However, it also happened to be their most disliked trailer to date on the platform, to the point that many accused online trolls of review-bombing the trailer. Even still, hardcore fans of the franchise seemed to meet the trailer with a bit of a shrug, so Lucasfilm and Disney are celebrating Star Wars Day (May the 4th) with a new, more-action driven trailer which makes it seem almost like a sci-fi version of a classic Kung-Fu film from the seventies.

Indeed, martial arts epics and samurai tales always influenced George Lucas when he crafted the original trilogy, so it makes sense that showrunner Lesyle Headland’s take on the franchise would make these elements more prominent than ever.

the acolyte trailer 2

As previously revealed, The Acolyte takes place generations before the events of the prequel films and centres around a Jedi master (played by Squid Game’s Lee Jung-Jae) who encounters a dangerous warrior (played by Amandla Stenberg) who seems to reveal dark secrets about The Force and the Jedi Masters. The trailer boasts lots of action and has a final reveal that should get fans talking, with Jung-Jae facing off with a Sith villain (sporting a red lightsaber) with a truly unsettling helmet design that could make this baddie a new fan favourite.

That said, some folks, understandably, are facing a little Star Wars fatigue, with the recent Ahsoka criticized for needing too much knowledge of expanded Star Wars lore to make sense. Headland previously teased that the show was designed so that you don’t have to know all the ins and outs of the expanded franchise to enjoy it, so maybe it’ll crossover to a broader audience. Or maybe not. We’ll have to wait and see.

Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Dafne Keen (Logan), Charlie Barnett (You), Jodie Turner-Smith (Anne Boleyn), Rebecca Henderson (Russian Doll), Dean-Charles Chapman (Game of Thrones), Joonas Suotamon (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix Resurrections) co-star. The Acolyte releases its first two episodes on June 4th.

Do you like this trailer more than the first?

For years, Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net has been about two things only – awesome art and the artists that create it. With that in mind, we thought why not take the first week of the month to showcase these awesome artists even more? Welcome to “Awesome Artist We’ve Found Around The Net.” In this column, we are focusing on one artist and the awesome art that they create, whether they be amateur, up and coming, or well established. The goal is to uncover these artists so even more people become familiar with them. We ask these artists a few questions to see their origins, influences, and more. If you are an awesome artist or know someone that should be featured, feel free to contact me at any time at theodorebond@joblo.com.This month we are very pleased to bring you the awesome art of…

Maurocio was born in 1975 in the city of La Serena, in the north of Chile, and has been a passionate professional illustrator since he 19 years old.

He currently lives in México and works as a senior artist and art director in numerous projects, brands and companies around the world, mainly in the area of collectible cards art and tablet games usually in projects related to fantasy and science fiction themes.

JOBLO: What got you started as an artist?
EL GRIMLOCK: Like many, I think it’s a process that starts in childhood. In the early 80s, I grew up surrounded by TV cartoons (no streaming yet, haha, and I didn’t have a VHS). When the broadcast schedule ended, you had to wait until the next day (and sometimes an entire week!!!) to see your favorite series again. I think I began drawing them as a way to keep seeing them during that wait. I eventually started making comics with them, imagining what stories might happen in future episodes, making my own episodes of Transformers or The Real Ghostbusters. My father worked as an accountant and provided me with lots of papers I could use to draw on the back of. I think that’s the origin of my creative activity. My nickname “ElGrimlock” came much later at 29, inspired by my favorite transformer, becoming my public identity globally, to this day.

Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?
I think that before I was 10, I wasn’t really aware of authors’ existence. But my obsession with the series I liked the most grew. At six years old, I saw Mazinger Z for the first time, and it was a revolution. A whole life of watching humorous cartoons with talking animals, and then suddenly a giant robot enters the scene, launching its fists like rockets, and you could also pilot it. Absolutely crazy. Another Japanese show called Ultraman also fascinated me in my early years. Both were giant robots in my mind (I later learned Ultraman was an alien and not a machine). I think all of this paved the way for my fanatical embrace of Transformers G1 in 1984, as if it was a tailor-made suit. I also loved the wave of fantasy movies from the 80s by Jim Henson, like Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, and The NeverEnding Story, and of course, all the movies with monsters designed by Stan Winston.

Who do you really dig these days, follow on Instagram?
I follow many authors I admire, colleagues and friends, sculptors, voice actors, and cosplayers. Among my favorite painters is Yoshitaka Amano whose work has been one of my favorites at different stages of my life, from Gatchaman in my childhood to Vampire Hunter D in my youth. Today I admire his ability to produce both highly commercial products and more mature, artistic works. Also, many artists drawing fantasy and science fiction, and lately, sites dedicated to sharing photos of collections, figures, or sculptures beautifully painted by talented people. Also, sites dedicated to retro franchises, although I love watching current series too. There’s always a special place in my heart for the giant piloted robots of the 80s.

What advice would you have for budding artists today?
Today is a special time. Many emerging artists fear how the work scene will evolve after the advent of generative AI. I’d tell them to keep investing time and effort into discovering the elements that form their own artistic proposal. The recurring themes in our work create a language to which people respond. I believe artists not only have the ability but the duty to communicate to the future. The valuable things for you: a theme, a way of drawing eyes, expressions, the attitude of our characters, what makes you laugh, get angry, or feel sad. It’s not about debating whether computers will have something to say eventually, but about preventing art from losing substance in the process. Become an expert in your own message and add to the difference in a world hungry for quality. Nobody wants a world covered in a gray mass full of soulless images.

What should we be looking out for from you in the future?
For now, I hope to continue exploring topics that interest me and finding people with similar tastes. Some will be consumer products, and others will be more artistic and personal experiences. I’ll share all these projects on my social media. I’m excited to invite you to my new YouTube channel, where I’ll focus on a unique theme I love: art around dragons. I want to cover the topic of their design and art with tutorials and art processes. I think it’ll appeal to people who enjoy these mythical creatures. For now, I’m enjoying sharing with friends with similar interests and slightly different areas. Haha. So, I’ll keep making art until I know how to build myself a giant robot.

Being a fansite, we have to ask you… What are some of your favorite movies/TV shows of all time?
I love Macross, a world I first knew through the Robotech anime, which accompanied me throughout my life. I’ve watched its series, OVAs, and movies many times. I’m a super fan of Watanabe, director of Macross Plus and Cowboy Bebop, among others. I love Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, Berserk, Record of Lodoss War. For movies, I love the Alien saga, Predator, The Thing, all things related to cosmic horror, and Conan the Barbarian stories, both the Arnold movie and Robert Howard’s pulps. Of course, the Savage Sword comics, Batman comics, especially post-Dark Knight, Vertigo’s publications, Sandman, Death, Hellblazer. Video games have also influenced me greatly: Soul Reaver, Dragon’s Dogma, Monster Hunter, Castlevania SOTN, and more. And sometimes I draw, haha.
