The trailer for season four of The Boys has arrived, with our first confirmation that it will have a crossover with spinoff series Gen V and that we will see the superheroes facing their greatest challenge yet.
In the trailer, we hear Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher tell his team, “I look back on my life, and all I see are the messes I’ve made…and I ain’t got time to fix it. I can do one thing right with the time I’ve got left, but I can’t do it alone. I can’t do it without you.” From here, we see that the team will be forced to come to terms with their celebrity, particularly how it will shift as they go on their next missions and evolve into “wrathful gods.”
This is a damn good trailer that builds even more hype for season four of The Boys, which has really picked up over the last few weeks. Last month, showrunner Eric Kripke confirmed that production had wrapped, adding that it may be the best season so far, complete with a scene “that miiiiiiight be the batshit craziest thing we’ve ever done.”
As for how season four of The Boys will crossover with Gen V, the trailer gives us looks at both supes Cate Dunlap (Maddie Phillips) and Sam Riordan (Asa Germann). With season five of The Boys already confirmed, here’s hoping we can get even more characters from both meeting up.
Here is the official synopsis of season four of The Boys, as per Amazon: “The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son and the rest of The Boys are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.”
Season four of The Boys will kick off with a three-episode premiere on Amazon Prime Video on June 13th, with remaining episodes hitting the service every Thursday after.
What did you think of the trailer for season four of The Boys? How will it stack up against the first three?
We’ve still got a few more weeks to go before the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but if you’d like a little appetizer from the Wasteland, Tom Holkenborg, aka JunkieXL, has released the first track from the soundtrack for your listening pleasure.
Titled “Dementus Is Gaining,” the track from the Furiosa soundtrack definitely leads me to imagine one of the franchise’s epic chase sequences. You can have a listen below, and the track is also available on Apple Music, Spotify, iTunes Store, Deezer, and Tidal.
Tom Holkenborg also composed the soundtrack for Mad Max: Fury Road, so it’s great to have him back for Furiosa. I look forward to being blown away on all fronts.
Chris Hemsworth plays Dementus, and joining the Mad Max franchise has been a long-time goal for the actor. In fact, he recently told Entertainment Weekly that he wanted to audition to play Max Rockatansky himself in Mad Max: Fury Road but couldn’t get his foot in the door. “[I] couldn’t even get a call or a meeting or anything,” Hemsworth said. “I just hadn’t done enough to warrant that.” When Fury Road was finally released, Hemsworth got his agent on the phone immediately. “I was completely absorbed and taken for the adventure and the ride. I said, ‘I’ve got to work with this guy, he’s a genius,’” Hemsworth said. “And then, the rest is history.“
A six-minute sneak peek of Furiosa was screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last month, which our own Chris Bumbray attended, that lucky bastard. Overall, it sounded pretty epic and a worthy successor to Fury Road.
The official synopsis for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga: “As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by the Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.“
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will hit theaters on May 24th.
With major franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar under its roof, Disney typically finds itself on the top of the box-office heap, but that wasn’t the case last year. The company had more than a few failures which found its fortunes falling, and Deadline reports that four of the five biggest box-office bombs of 2023 belonged to Disney.
First up, and least surprising, is The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris. As its predecessor grossed $1.1 billion, it was hoped that the sequel would equal that number, but the film turned out to be a bomb of epic proportions, grossing just $206 million worldwide. The film reportedly found Disney taking a loss of $237 million. Yikes.
Next up, and the one that hurts the most, is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Fans had hoped for more from Harrison Ford’s final outing as Indiana Jones, but the film grossed just $384 million worldwide, with the studio taking a loss of $143 million. That’s a little more than was previously reported.
Disney also didn’t have any luck with Wish, the animated movie meant to celebrate the studio’s 100th anniversary. Audiences weren’t keen to wish on this falling star, as the film grossed $253 million worldwide and prompted a loss of $131 million.
Coming in last was Disney’s latest attempt at transforming the Haunted Mansion attraction into a theatrical franchise. Boasting an all-star ensemble cast which included LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jared Leto, the supernatural comedy didn’t win over critics or audiences as it grossed just $117 million worldwide. It happens that the net loss of the picture was also $117 million. If you’re wondering what the fifth movie was, that would be Warner Bros.’ The Flash, which brought in $271 million worldwide and found the studio taking a loss of $155 million.
Universal Pictures was the highest-grossing studio of 2023, generating $4.907 billion at the box-office thanks to hits such as Oppenheimer and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Although Disney had a few major box-office bombs, you shouldn’t feel too bad as they still came in second with $4.827 billion.
UPDATE: Kevin Spacey has ended up sitting for a interview with broadcaster Dan Wooton, in which he attempts to defend himself against new allegations, all of which he denies saying “I have nothing left to hide”:
Kevin Spacey may have been found not guilty in his 2023 sex offense trial, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be easily creeping back into the public consciousness…at least not the way he wants. Even with that verdict, there are still new accusations being made against the two-time Oscar winner, with the most recent triggering Spacey to launch into a rant on social media.
Ahead of next week’s airing of the two-part docuseries Spacey Unmasked, Kevin Spacey took to X to blast Channel 4 for what he’s suggesting is a hit piece. “Over the last week, I have repeatedly requested that @Channel4 afford me more than 7 days to respond to allegations made against me dating back 48 years and provide me with sufficient details to investigate these matters. Channel 4 has refused on the basis that they feel that asking for a response in 7 days to new, anonymized and non-specific allegations is a “fair opportunity” for me to refute any allegations made against me. I will not sit back and be attacked by a dying network’s one-sided “documentary” about me in their desperate attempt for ratings. There’s a proper channel to handle allegations against me and it’s not Channel 4.”
Kevin Spacey went on to make the point that he has defended himself time and time again, despite the aforementioned verdict, which found him cleared of counts of sexual assault, forcing others into sexual situations with consent and more. “Each time I have been given the time and a proper forum to defend myself, the allegations have failed under scrutiny and I have been exonerated.”
While we have yet to see Spacey Unmasked – which will also air on Max on May 6th and 7th – we expect it to be a hit with viewers. Not only are documentaries riding their prime, but the topics it will cover – not to mention it focusing on a once-prominent celebrity – are ripe for ratings. Even still, Channel 4 hopefully considered the sort of target Kevin Spacey would put on it, as just this week Dan Schneider filed a lawsuit against the makers of Quiet on Set, who he says falsely painted him as a “child predator.”
Kevin Spacey has a few projects lined up but gone are the days where audiences truly look forward to his next performance. So is this how the actor will get his publicity from now on?
According to THR, 20th Century Studios is looking to reboot The Maze Runner franchise based on the best-selling novels by James Dashner. The studio is currently in negotiations with Jack Paglen (Transcendence) to write the script for the new film.
The Maze Runner was released in 2014 and followed a group of memory-wiped teenagers who are trapped in a walled area known as the Glade. The only way out lies beyond an ever-changing maze, which is filled with deadly mechanical creatures. The film was followed by Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials in 2015 and Maze Runner: The Death Cure in 2018.
Before you start getting up in arms over 20th Century Studios rebooting a franchise which wrapped up less than a decade ago, sources say that this project won’t be a redo of the original story or a direct sequel. Instead, the producers hope to make it a “continuation of the story [but] also return to the elements which made the first movie connect with its audience.” I would imagine that would involve returning to the concept of a group trapped within a labyrinth. The report notes that the idea behind the reboot will be similar to how the studio is approaching Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (which happens to be helmed by The Maze Runner director Wes Ball). The upcoming Apes movie doesn’t remake any of the previous movies but does connect with small details.
Original Maze Runner producers Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman of Gotham Group, as well as Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill, will return to produce the reboot. Wes Bakk will also be involved as a producer.
The original trilogy was a surprising success at the box office, with The Maze Runner taking in $348 million on a budget of $34 million. The sequels did drop, with Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials raking in $313 million on a $61 million budget and Maze Runner: The Death Cure grossing $288 million on a $62 million budget.
It might be one year premature for its 30th anniversary, but David Fincher’s Seven is having a moment. Following the release of the 8K (well, 4K) transfer of the 1995 film, Fincher has left himself no choice but to dig back into the archives – and that includes the test screenings, described by the director as “disastrous.”
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, David Fincher said that Seven tested in the 50s with audiences, a deadly sin in its own right within the movie industry. But Fincher believes that the test audience had been duped, as promotional fliers teased the wrong movies from his stars. “They brought me this little 5-by-7-inch card that said: “Would you like to see a new movie starring Brad Pitt (‘Legends of the Fall’) and Morgan Freeman (‘Driving Miss Daisy’)?” It made no sense to me. You’re not going to market this movie to the people who like Driving Miss Daisy. That’s not a correlative. There’s no connective tissue. There’s no relationship between these experiences, much less the kind of storytelling that we’re asking the audience to immerse themselves in.”
But that wasn’t the only issue that came about ahead of Seven’s eventual September 1995 release, with Fincher noting that one producer had just about the worst idea imaginable to “fix” the film’s most famous scene. “One of the producers who’s no longer alive [Phyllis Carlyle], her big idea was that Brad and Gwyneth Paltrow have these dogs that live in that tiny little room in their apartment. And she was convinced that the thing that would send him into apoplectic, inconsolable sorrow was if the German shepherd — if that was the head in the box. And we were all kind of like: Really?” Right, because audiences love seeing decapitated dogs on the big screen!
After such dreadful screenings and meetings, David Fincher had no idea if Seven would ever finish filming. Remember, this was his follow-up to Alien 3, which was ripped from him and seemed to spell uncertain doom for his filmmaking career. “I came to them after this horrendous screening when we got the notes from the audience that said I wouldn’t recommend this movie to my worst enemy. And it was discussed whether I should continue on with the movie and whether or not we should shoot animal heads or whatever.”
Of course, today, Seven remains one of David Fincher’s masterpieces, one which feels ahead of its time in its bleakness, its twists and, of course, showing just how good of actors the fellas from Legends of the Fall and Driving Miss Daisy were…
