The Boys: Mexico, Eric Kripke

It was announced last year that a new spin-off of The Boys was in development from Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, with Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal set to executive produce. Dubbed The Boys: Mexico, the series is set to join the ever-growing superhero franchise, but before you start getting too excited, we’re still a long way off from seeing it on our screens.

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke spoke with Entertainment Weekly to give an update on the spin-off series. “They are still making the deal with the writer for the pilot,” Kripke said. “He has an amazing pitch, and we all giggle and think about how fun it would be. But there are a lot of hurdles for that show before it’s a real show. He’s got to write an amazing pilot, he’s probably got to write an amazing episode 2. I think he can and he will, but we’re a while away from truly starting to drop in the Easter eggs and the setups and stuff.

Kripke added that the series won’t move ahead if it isn’t strong enough to stand on its own. He pointed to Gen V as an example; although the spin-off does have ties to the flagship series (with a crossover happening in the upcoming fourth season), Kripke doesn’t want audiences to have to watch both shows if they don’t want to. “I really don’t want people to feel they have to watch one [show] to understand the other,” Kripke said. “I never want it to feel like homework or mandatory viewing. I think that’s hurt Marvel in a certain amount of ways, and I don’t want to do that. I want you to watch both shows. It certainly expands your enjoyment and experience of both shows because you understand some of the backstory of where things came from, but by no means do you have to.

It sounds like it could be some time before we see The Boys: Mexico, and that’s assuming it moves forward at all. Producers Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal are said to be considering appearing in the series, although they would not have main roles. As for The Boys, the series has been renewed for a fifth season, with the fourth set to premiere on Prime Video on June 13th.

Star Trek: Discovery Blu Del Barrio Ian Alexander

Star Trek: Discovery co-stars Blu Del Barrio (who plays Adira Tal on the show) and Ian Alexander (who plays Gray Tal) will share the screen again in the upcoming vampire horror comedy Blue Balls, Variety reports. The feature directorial debut of Léa Fae Caddigan, the film is expected to head into production sometime this summer.

With a screenplay by Caddigan and Meredith Metcalf, Blue Balls will follow Emma, who, back at home in her small town, wants nothing more than a night of driving around and hanging out with her best friend, Mara. But when they meet Tom and Jack, Mara invites these two strangers back to their place to get to know each other better.  The only problem is that Emma is a virgin as is Tom. But Tom’s not a sexual virgin, he’s a vampire who’s never killed before and he’s hoping tonight will be the night for him to join a centuries-old vampire fraternity. As the two humans fight for their lives with every weapon they can find, this horror show turns into a comedic blood battle for their freedom.

Emma will be the first starring role for newcomer Clare Noelle. Blu Del Barrio is taking on the role of Mara, while Ian Alexander will be playing a character named Callidora. Charlie Hiscock (Ted Lasso) is set to play Tom.

Jake Casey and Danielle Benedict are producing Blue Balls through The Dazey Phase, which is a production, sales and distribution company.

Caddigan provided the following statement: “Blue Balls is relevant to anyone who has ever felt like romance, sex, dating, and life is a survivor’s sport. I like stories that deliver deep points and hard truths with humor and action, and no one expects stunt sequences, car chases, and bloody vampires in a film that explores consent, coercion and personal agency. I couldn’t have asked for a better team than the folks at Dazey Phase, whose dedication to responsible storytelling and championing unique perspectives is unwavering.

What do you think of Blu Del Barrio and Ian Alexander reuniting for Blue Balls? Does this sound like an interesting project to you? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

The 4:30 Movie Kevin Smith

The 4:30 Movie is the sixteenth feature film from director Kevin Smith – and while he was making the movie, he thought he was making something that would get a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. But the MPA saw it differently. When they had the chance to watch the movie earlier this year, they felt the sexual references in the dialogue were enough for the movie to earn an R rating for sexual content. Smith appealed the rating (and subscribers to That Kevin Smith Club got some interesting insight into the appeals process), but the ratings board decided to stick with the R. They confirmed today that The 4:30 Movie will remain an R rated film.

Smith has a history of being able to get his films re-rated on appeal. Clerks and Zack and Miri Make a Porno were both given NC-17 ratings, but were re-rated R on appeal. Jersey Girl was an R, but became a PG-13 on appeal. Yoga Hosers got an R, then the ratings board switched it to PG-13 before Smith even made his appeal. But he couldn’t get them to change their minds this time – and in fact, they were even able to get him to see where they were coming from with their decision to give The 4:30 Movie an R.

Set in the summer of 1986, this one is a coming-of-age comedy that follows three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.

Austin Zajur (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), Nicholas Cirillo (Outer Banks), and Reed Northrup (High Maintenance) play the sixteen year old friends, with Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) as the dream girl. Ken Jeong (The Hangover), Sam Richardson (Veep), Genesis Rodriguez (Tusk), Justin Long (Barbarian), Jason Lee (Almost Famous), Rachel Dratch (I Love My Dad), Kate Micucci (The Big Bang Theory), Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog), Harley Quinn Smith (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood), and Method Man (Power Book II: Ghost) are also in the cast.

The 4:30 Movie was filmed at Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey, a theatre Smith now co-owns and used to hang out in every weekend when he was a teenager. Liz Destro, Josh Bachove, and Jordan Monsanto produced, with Bill Bromiley, Shanan Becker, and Jonathan Saba executive producing.

Smith has previously said, “The day we bought Smodcastle Cinemas, I not only reclaimed an integral piece of my childhood, I also suddenly had access to a visually interesting and cost-free movie location! So I started writing a personal paean to the past for us 70s and 80s kids – the pre-information generation who grew up without the Internet, when romance and relationships required much more than a swipe to get started, and the idea of asking out someone you had a crush on was as terrifying as the looming threat of nuclear war.

Saban Films has picked up the worldwide rights to The 4:30 Movie, which Smith will be taking on a multi-city national tour that will be followed by a nationwide theatrical rollout. Specific dates have not yet been revealed.

Are you looking forward to The 4:30 Movie? What do you think of the film getting an R for sexual content? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

When Hollywood dubbed actors like Andrew McCarthy, Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Demi Moore, and Rob Lowe as members of The Brat Pack, the label triggered an unwanted chain reaction throughout the group. The name came with a specific air, and several Brat Pack members saw the brand as a curse. In Andrew McCarthy’s Brats trailer, the teen comedy icon turned filmmaker explores the ramifications of becoming the poster child for Hollywood’s disaffected youth during the 1980s.

In partnership with NEON and Network Entertainment, ABC News Studios will bring Brats to Hulu in the United States on June 13. A Disney+ premiere will occur in select territories later this summer, following its world premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Festival.

According to the documentary’s official press release:

Brats “looks at the iconic films of the 1980s that shaped a generation and the narrative that took hold when their young stars were branded the “Brat Pack.” McCarthy reunites with his fellow Brat Packers — friends, colleagues and former foes, including Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Jon Cryer, Lea Thompson and Timothy Hutton, many of whom he had not seen for over 30 years — to answer the question: What did it mean to be part of the Brat Pack? McCarthy also sits down for a first-time conversation with writer David Blum, who fatefully coined the term Brat Pack in a 1985 New York Magazine cover story.”

In the Brats trailer, Andrew McCarthy does the unthinkable by reaching out to his Brat Pack compatriots for an in-depth look at the blessing that later felt like a curse as members of the assembly tried to distance themselves from Hollywood’s tabloid clutches. On June 10, 1985, The New York Times posted an article titled “Hollywood’s Brat Pack.” Instantly, actors appearing in films like The OutsidersThe Breakfast ClubWeird ScienceSt. Elmo’s FireSixteen CandlesFast Times at Ridgemont High, and No Small Affair were defined by a nostalgic yet questionable time in Hollywood, with little room to escape.

Andrew McCarthy hopes to clear the air in his Brats documentary by having several Brat Pack members reconnect for the first time in years.

“The Brat Pack captivated a generation and defined cool for so many,” said Mike Kelley, who heads ABC News Studios. “Andrew, as a seminal member, brings unbelievable access and perspective to the phenomenon as director of this film. It’s a deeply personal, surprising and entertaining journey and a film we are so proud of at ABC News Studios.”

“Making Brats was that rare opportunity to dive back into the frozen past and bring it up into the living present,” said McCarthy.

Are you ready for a class reunion with the Brat Pack when Brats comes to Hulu and Disney+?
