Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th (you can watch the teaser HERE), and to promote the film, Álvarez recently sat down for an interview with Total Film. During the conversation, the director said that Alien: Romulus starts off reminiscent of Ridley Scott’s Alien, then gradually becomes more like James Cameron’s Aliens – which seems fitting, given that the story actually takes place sometime in the years between the events of Alien and Aliens.
Álvarez said, “The environments, and the pace of it as well – it’s more similar to Alien for quite a bit. And then gradually – you won’t even know – you feel like it’s more Aliens. It’s a natural progression, and it happens effortlessly.“
Álvarez also revealed that he and co-writer Rodo Sayagues consulted Cameron about the script during an extensive phone call – which even included discussion of the size of the engines on the film’s ships.
When this project was announced near the start of 2022, it was said that Álvarez pitched the idea to Ridley Scott years ago and it stuck with Scott. So in late 2021, he called Álvarez and asked if he still wanted to make an Alien movie. Clearly, the answer was yes. 20th Century Studios division president Steve Asbell told The Hollywood Reporter that they picked up the project “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch. It was just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.“
It has also been said that the story Álvarez and Sayagues crafted for Alien: Romulus is not connected to the other films in the Alien franchise – but it’s not ignoring any of the other entries, either. Álvarez has been clear about the fact that his story takes place within the established franchise continuity. It has the following official logline: The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.
The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Industry), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). Merced has said there’s a scene in the film that’s so disgusting that a lot of viewers will have to look away, so that goes along with the “graphic and gruesome” description. “Graphic and gruesome” is what we expected from this movie as soon as it was announced that it was being made by the director of Evil Dead 2013 and Don’t Breathe.
This new Alien movie is coming to us from Momentum and 20th Century Studios, with Ridley Scott producing through his Scott Free banner.
Total Film also unveiled a new image of Spaeny’s character in Alien: Romulus, and that can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Super/Man, the Christopher Reeve documentary focusing on the actor’s brilliant contribution to cinema and fight to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, is leaping tall buildings in a single bound for a two-day theatrical engagement. The powerful doc comes to theaters on September 21, followed by an encore presentation on Reeve’s birthday, September 25. DC Studios and Fathom Events are joining forces for the occasion. The studio has not announced if Super/Man will receive a broader release.
“On behalf of not only Warner Bros., but also my colleagues at DC, HBO and CNN, it’s an honor to be a part of bringing Christopher Reeve and his singular legacy to audiences again,” Jeff Goldstein, president of domestic distribution, said. “It was at this very studio where he made us all believe a man could fly, and this documentary reveals what made him a true hero, on- and off-screen.”
JoBlo’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, saw Super/Man at the Sundance Film Festival last year and was blown away by its quality. In his review, Chris said Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is a heartbreaking experience and that one should not expect a dry eye in the house after the film celebrates Reeves and his achievements.
“Directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui wisely adopt a non-linear style to tell Reeve’s story, opening with his accident, which came at a time when he was trying to rebuild his career following the disastrous end of the Superman franchise with Quest for Peace,” Chris writes in his review. “Reeve’s ordeal is depicted in a harrowing fashion, never shying away from the fact that until the day he died, he was fighting to one day get out of his wheelchair. Yet, Reeve accomplished a lot after his accident, increasing funding for spinal cord injury research while also trying to improve the quality of life for those afflicted with his condition.”
To assure authenticity, Bonhôte and Ettedgui worked closely with the Reeves family to create the documentary. The presentation features personal archive material to help tell Reeve’s harrowing tale of survival and heroism.

Distributor Neon seems to have had the marketing department working overtime to promote the July 12th theatrical release date of Longlegs, the latest horror project from The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins. We’ve seen a whole lot of cryptic teasers and posters for this movie, mostly accompanied by strange quotes… but today a trailer has made its way online that takes a more traditional approach to promoting the film, giving us an idea of how the story plays and spending some time setting up the lead character, played by Maika Monroe of It Follows and The Guest. Monroe stars in the film alongside Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario), Alicia Witt (Urban Legend) and Blair Underwood (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D). The story Perkins crafted for the film is said to be “in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers.” Monroe takes on the role of FBI Agent Lee Harker, a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Cage). As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family.
Cage has said (while speaking to John Carpenter) the film is about “a character who’s hearing voices. It’s kind of like a possessed Geppetto, who’s making these dolls”. Production took place in Vancouver, Canada. Cage is producing Longlegs through his company Saturn Films, which recently had success with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Pig. Also producing are Dan Kagan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Dave Caplan, and Chris Ferguson. Jason Cloth and Fred Berger of Automatik serve as executive producers with John Friedberg of Black Bear.
In addition to directing the films mentioned at the top of this article, Perkins directed an episode of the recent revival of The Twilight Zone. He has also worked on the screenplays for the thriller Removal, the crime thriller Cold Comes the Night, and the horror film The Girl in the Photographs.
