Sean "Diddy" Combs, Cassie Ventura, video

CNN has obtained a 2016 surveillance video which shows Sean “Diddy” Combs grabbing his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura by the back of the neck, throwing her down on the ground, and kicking her. The altercation matches allegations made by Ventura last year in her now-settled lawsuit against the music mogul.

The altercation took place on March 5, 2016, at the now-closed InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles. The video shows Ventura leaving the hotel room and walking to the elevators. Moments later, Combs rushes out of the room dressed only in a towel and grabs Ventura by the back of the neck while she’s waiting for the elevator. He throws her to the ground, kicks her, and then picks up Ventura’s purse and suitcase before turning around to kick her again. Roughly grabbing her sweatshirt, Combs then starts to drag her down the hallway back towards the room before dropping her and leaving. Ventura gets up and picks up a hotel phone on the wall, but Combs returns and appears to shove her into a corner. He then sits on a chair, picks up an object (possibly a vase) and throws it forcibly in Ventura’s direction.

Ventura declined to comment on the video, but her attorney, Douglas H. Wigdor, said: “The gut-wrenching video has only further confirmed the disturbing and predatory behavior of Mr. Combs. Words cannot express the courage and fortitude that Ms. Ventura has shown in coming forward to bring this to light.” CNN has reached out to representatives for Combs and InterContinental Hotels, but they’ve yet to comment.

As I mentioned at the start, this incident was described in Ventura’s lawsuit against Combs. The lawsuit claims that an extremely intoxicated Combs had punched Ventura in the face, giving her a black eye. She waited until he fell asleep before attempting to leave the hotel room, leading to the events witnessed in the video. Ventura took a cab to her apartment but realized that Combs would be even angrier at this action, so she returned to the hotel with the intention of apologizing. Hotel security allegedly told her to return to her apartment, suggesting that they had seen the footage of the assault. The lawsuit also alleges that Combs paid the hotel $50,000 for the security footage.

Although the lawsuit was settled, more people have since come forward to accuse Combs of sexual abuse, rape, and sex trafficking, and his homes were even raided by Homeland Security earlier this year. Combs has spoken out against the allegations. “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,” Combs wrote in a statement. “For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy. Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday.

Now that this video has been made public, I can’t imagine things are looking good for Diddy now.

Humane, a thriller directed by Caitlin Cronenberg, is getting an April theatrical release before heading to the Shudder streaming service

It seems like at some point, every major director has thoughts on retirement. Whether they refuse to do so or have a set number of movies in their head, it’s like they can’t avoid the subject. Now in his 80s and with more than five decades in the industry, David Cronenberg is certainly no different. While his latest film, The Shrouds, vies for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Cronenberg is contemplating what his next move will be.

Sitting down with The Hollywood Reporter, David Cronenberg – who has tinkered with the idea of retirement before – acknowledged that the topic is almost embedded in the field. “It’s a real impulse because filmmaking is hard, very hard. And there comes a time — and it doesn’t have to be because you’re older — where you think, ‘Maybe there’s some other things I could do that would be equally fulfilling and maybe not so difficult.’” He also noted that even when filmmakers try to shake things up, they end up busier than they may have intended. “Some directors who have committed to doing a streaming series, they’re committing even more time because it’s like making four or more movie…It’s a huge commitment of time, and I don’t have another life for all that time. So I guess it would be more balanced and discreet to not mention those moments when you have that impulse because, of course, things change. And you might decide you’ve retired and you’re bored, and then you come back.”

So, will David Cronenberg actually retire or does he have a few more movies left in him? “I have no idea right now what I will do next, but I don’t want to say that I won’t make another film. Because I don’t know. I really don’t know.” That’s quite a non-answer, but we certainly hope he continues well into his 90s even, as the Canadian director has consistently been one of the most unique visionaries on the scene. While he may never again give us The Fly and Videodrome level films, he has continued to reinvent while also remaining exactly who we expect him to be.

David Cronenberg first competed for the Palme d’Or with 1996’s Crash (which took home the Jury Prize), returning six more times, including with The Shroud.

How would you feel about David Cronenberg retiring at this point in his career? What stands as your favorite film of his?

Hatchet

Dark Sky Films has announced that they’re launching Dark Sky Selects, “a new specialty label bringing some of our best films to the collector’s market with limited edition packaging, restored transfers and new special features. These new limited editions will offer die-hard fans and collectors new upgrades of many of their longtime favorite Dark Sky Films, produced for the purpose of making the definitive edition of these classics and modern favorites.” Their first release through this label is the Hatchet: The Complete Collection Limited Edition Steelbook, which brings all four films in the Hatchet franchise together in one package for the first time. This steelbook will be released in June, and copies are available for pre-order on the Dark Sky Selects website.

The 5-disc Hatchet: The Complete Collection Limited Edition Steelbook will include nearly two hours of new bonus features. Here’s the information: Unleashed at a time when the fun of 80s slashers had all but disappeared from the cinematic landscape, Hatchet ushered in a new era of terror with its unapologetic brutality and introduction of Victor Crowley, the modern bogeyman, who ruthlessly hunts those who dare tread into his swamp. With each installment, the stakes escalate, delivering bigger, bloodier scares and a relentless barrage of inventive kills. So gather all your pieces, because it’s time to return to his swamp and learn once and for all that some legends truly never die.

The set will also include two brand new bonus pieces, Hatchet: Swamp Tales and Production Journals. This bonus material will be available exclusively with the Hatchet Complete Collection Limited Edition Steelbook. This is the first of many iconic Dark Sky titles that will be available this year. Additional limited-edition releases of fan favorite films and merch will be announced throughout the year, which will only be available direct to consumer at DarkSkySelects.com

Every film in the Hatchet franchise was written by Adam Green, who also directed each of the films except for Hatchet III, where B.J. McDonnell took the helm. The Complete Collection Limited Edition Steelbook contains Hatchet (2007), Hatchet II (2010), Hatchet III (2013), and Victor Crowley (2017). The slasher Victor Crowley is played in all of the films by genre icon Kane Hodder.

I’m hoping this won’t be the “complete” collection for very long, as I would really like to see Green get around to making Hatchet 5 soon, but it will be cool for fans to be able to add this set to their collections while we wait for a next sequel.
