Month: May 2024

When movie fans think of action stars, names like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Donnie Yen, Bruce Willis, and Jason Statham come to mind. However, Prime Video and Kevin Hart are adding another killing machine to the ranks. No, seriously, the new action daredevil is Kevin Hart. What? I’m not joking. Did you watch the Die Hart 2: Die Harter trailer above? You did? Well, then, I don’t know what to tell you. Stranger things have happened.

Exploding onto Prime Video on May 30Die Hart 2: Die Harter stars Kevin Hart as an idealized and action-ready version of himself. In the Die Hart 2: Die Harter trailer, Hart stages a restaurant terror attack to help pitch his new film. When the studio rep, Jordan (Nathalie Emmanuel), discovers the actor’s ruse, she blacklists Hart from her banner and threatens to ruin his name throughout the industry. Not to be deterred, Hart and his hype man, Andre (Ben Schwartz), take their next blockbuster to different financiers and end up in a real-life assault on Kevin’s life. To even the playing field, Kevin and Andre seek the help of Mr. 206, played by John Cena. With his bleached blond hair, silk robe, and third-degree burns on his nether regions, Mr. 206 joins the fight.

In addition to the Die Hart 2: Die Harter trailer, Prime Video debuted a poster for the high-octane action film featuring Hart, Cena, Mannuel, and Schwartz caught in another one of Hart’s outlandish attempts to prove he’s more than a pocket-sized funny man.

Kevin Hart recently played Cyrus in F. Gary Gray’s Lift, an action comedy about a master thief and his Interpol Agent ex-girlfriend (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who team up to steal $500 million in gold bullion on an A380 passenger flight. On August 9, Hart steps into Roland’s boots for the live-action adaptation of Borderlands. Cate Blanchett, Ariana Greenblatt, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gia Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis also star in Eli Roth’s interpretation of the best-selling video game series.

The Order, Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Justin Kurzel

Vertical is getting ahead of the crowds as this year’s Cannes market starts wheeling and dealing for Hollywood’s hottest projects and properties. The studio acquired the U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, with Justin Kurzel (MacbethThe History of the Kelly Gangi, Assassin’s Creed) in the director’s chair. Based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s novel The Silent Brotherhood, The Order stars Jude Law (CloserThe Grand Budapest HotelSky Captain and the World of Tomorrow), Nicholas Hoult (SupermanRenfieldMad Max: Fury Road), and Tye Sheridan (Ready Player OneX-Men: ApocalypseMud).

Here’s a synopsis of Flynn and Gerhardt’s novel courtesy of Library Journal:

Two courageous investigative journalists have created an insider’s account of the “silent brotherhood,” the anti-Jewish, white supremacist underground that, with the justification of some perversely interpreted Christian teachings, conducts an all-out race war. The movement has gathered a group of superpatriots, zealots, malcontents, as well as, rather disturbingly, a large majority of ordinary people. These followers see the underground’s survivalist creed as the way whites can protect their race from “Jewish monied elites” and nonwhites “living off of welfare.”

Kurzel’s film looks at the silent brotherhood’s dealings, including violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations, and armored car heists that frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. Deadline‘s exclusive report says Law plays “a lone FBI agent stationed in the sleepy, picturesque town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, who believes the crimes were not the work of traditional criminals. He thinks the disturbance is the work of domestic terrorists with a charismatic leader (Hoult). Alison Oliver, Odessa Young, Sebastian Pigott, George Tchortov, Victor Slezak, and Marc Maron also star as primary cast members.

“I am looking forward to working with Vertical on the release of The Order,” Kurzel told Deadline“It was a privilege getting to work with such an extraordinary cast and crew on such a thrilling script by Zach Baylin, a story from the past speaking so directly with the present.”

What do you think about Nicholas Hoult playing the leader of a white domestic terrorism cell? Will The Order open eyes to the horrors of white supremacy or embolden sleeper agents yet to be activated? Let’s hope it’s the first thing.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game

The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game from Gun Interactive was just released for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One back on August 18th, and the developers have been keeping a steady flow of updates coming ever since. In recent months, a new map called The Mill was added, along with a new victim character named Virginia – who has the voice and likeness of genre icon Barbara Crampton! Now the game’s developers have taken to social media to tease the fact that a new killer called Hands will be added to the game next month… on June 11th, to be exact.

Details on the Hand character haven’t been revealed, but here’s a teaser clip that shows him menacing Virginia:

Matches of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game pit 4 victim characters against 3 killer characters. The story of the game has the following set-up: When Maria Flores went missing, and local law enforcement seemed to stall out in their search, her younger sister Ana teamed up with some of Maria’s friends from college to pick up the trail. The game takes place before the events of director Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (watch it HERE).

Kane Hodder (who also worked on Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III) did the motion-capture performance for Leatherface in the game, as well as the Grandpa character. Other motion-capture performers include Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs) as The Hitch-hiker; Troy Burgess (Swedish Dicks) as The Cook; Kristina Klebe (Don’t Kill It) as new killer character Sissy; and Dove Meir (Dig) as new killer character Johnny. Scout Taylor-Compton (Rob Zombie’s Halloween) did the mo-cap for all of the female victim characters while Hunter C. Smith (Lucky) did the mo-cap for all of the male victim characters. Although Whalen did the mo-cap for the Hitch-hiker, Edwin Neal, who played the character in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, provided his voice for the game. Damian Maffei (The Strangers: Prey at Night) provided the voice of Johnny, and Michael Johnston of Teen Wolf did the same for Danny. BAFTA winner Cissy Jones did the mo-cap and vocal performance for Nancy. You can find out more about the killer characters at THIS LINK and the victim characters HERE. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game

Horror films can often be the red-headed stepchild of the entertainment industry. They’re rarely treated with the same glitz and glam of other genres. So the fact that Lionsgate is pulling out all the stops for The Strangers: Chapter 1 is a good sign of their faith in their trilogy. Because yes, this is the beginning of not just one solo outing but an entire trio of films for audiences to take head-on. So I was happy the film was getting not just a big theatrical release after being rumored for straight to streaming, it even got a big Hollywood Red Carpet premiere. And I was lucky enough to be able to attend!

Being my first ever Red Carpet, I obviously don’t have a whole lot to compare it to but I was very impressed. The Red Carpet was made of burlap and they had various Strangers lurking around. Riverdale stars Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes showed up to support their co-star Madelaine Petsch. And it’s always a good day when you’re able to talk to Renny Harlin. We also got to talk to Kel Mitchell about his favorite horror movie (though his name may be in the news for something else). I asked the various cast and filmmakers about which scene from the film they’d like to see live in horror infamy. Some of the answers may surprise you as there are quite a few teases for the sequels. You can check out my review HERE!

The Strangers: Chapter 1 plot synopsis:

After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive in The Strangers ― Chapter 1, the chilling first entry of this upcoming horror feature-film series.

THE STRANGERS – Chapter 1 will be available in theaters nationwide on May 17, 2024
