Fresh off of the launch of JoBlo Horror Originals’ first-ever livestream, Friday Night Frights with Tyler Nichols, comes the debut of another livestream show, Friday Night Flicks, on JoBlo’s flagship Originals channel, TONIGHT at 8pm ET/ 5pm PT. The show, which will be hosted by the channel’s director, Kier Gomes (who you’ve seen host a ton of videos on the channel), is set to tackle all the big movie news of the week.

To note, the two shows, Friday Night Frights and Friday Night Flicks, will air on a rotating basis (every second week).

So, what’s Kier going to talk about during his first episode? One of the big stories he’s planning to tackle is our first look at David Corenswet in character as Superman in James Gunn’s first entry into his new DCU. This story has already proven to be something our readers have been divided over, with us posting a poll earlier this week that garnered a blockbuster number of results. Kier will deconstruct the super-suit as well as fan reactions, which have been all over the map.

Other stories he’ll weigh in on include the news that Peter Jackson is returning to Middle Earth as the producer of a Lord of the Rings Gollum spin-off to be directed by none other than Andy Serkis. Plus, there will be loads of other movie-centric topics tackled, so make sure to watch live tonight at 8ET/5PT in the video embedded above or RIGHT HERE. We’re very excited to get these livestream shows going, and we were blown away by the response to Friday Night Frights; as always, we need your support!

What else would you like to hear Kier weigh in on tonight? Let us know in the comments!

How do you like that? Orlando Bloom and I have something in common: we’ve both tried to erase Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy from our memories. Well, not exactly. While participating in Variety‘s “Know Their Lines” video series, Bloom drew a blank when asked about a line by his Troy character, Paris. Bloom thought the dialogue came from his Kingdom of Heaven character, Balian de Ibelin, or Legolas Greenleaf, his elven archer from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. To his surprise, the line came from Troy, a movie he’s tried to wipe from memory.

“Oh my god, ‘Troy.’ Wow. I think I just blanked that movie out of my brain by the way,” Bloom explained. “So many people love that movie, but for me playing that character was just like [slits throat]. Am I allowed to say all of these things? I didn’t want to do the movie. I didn’t want to play this character.”

“The movie was great. It was Brad [Pitt]. It was Eric [Bana] and Peter O’Toole,” Bloom continued. “But how am I going to play this character? It was completely against everything I felt in my being. At one point it says Paris crawls along the floor having been beaten by somebody and holds his brother’s leg. I was like, ‘I’m not going to be able to do this.’ One of my agents at the time said, ‘But that’s the moment that will make it!’ And I completely fell for that line of a agent. I think that’s why I blanked that from my mind.”

Orlando Bloom won’t say anything negative about Troy overall, but Diane Kruger, who played Helen in the film, isn’t afraid to say the production was a shitshow. Speaking with Variety last year, Kruger said the Troy sets were massive, and paparazzi were out in force to catch a candid of Brad Pitt in his armor. Kruger said making Troy was “exhilarating, but it was a circus. The sets were huge, paparazzi were flying around in a helicopter, waiting for Brad Pitt. It was crazy! When the movie was coming out, the press in Germany was very, very tough on me. They found my father, whom I haven’t seen since I was 13. They made up stories. It was really harsh.”

Good grief! That sounds like a nightmare. Some news outlets will do anything for a scoop, even if that means making their subjects uncomfortable.

Thankfully, Kruger says Pitt was sympathetic to her situation and offered her some kind words, telling Variety, “He came to my room and said: ‘I have heard some things and I want you to know that you are one of us now. Don’t let them get to you.’ He was so incredibly kind. It really changed a lot of things for me.”

Memory is tricky, and I’m not surprised Orlando Bloom forgot about his character’s dialogue from Troy. I can’t barely remember what I said this morning, let alone decades ago, on a film that was larger than life itself. Don’t worry, Orlando; I don’t think anyone will hold this against you.

Marvel actor and all-around badass Frank Grillo is trading his crossbones for stars and stripes after joining the cast of Peacemaker Season 2 for DC. Grillo is lacing up his boots to play Rick Flag Sr. for the sophomore season of James Gunn’s superhero series, starring John Cena as Christopher “Chris” Smith, aka Peacemaker. Rick Flag Sr. is the father of Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Cena’s Peacemaker killed Rick Flag Jr. in The Suicide Squad, leading me to think it’s time for revenge.

Before Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. appears in Peacemaker Season 2, he’ll debut in animated form in the upcoming Max series Creature Commandos. The monster-centric animated series revolves around a black ops team working for Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller.

James Gunn announced Frank Grillo’s casting for Peacemaker Season 2 via Instagram, saying, “Pleased to announce the great @frankgrillo1 will be reprising the role of Rick Flag, Sr – the role he’ll first play in animated form in ‘Creature Commandos’ – throughout Season 2 of ‘Peacemaker.’ Christopher Smith and Rick Sr have a little unfinished business to take care of…”

Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, and Steve Agee return for Peacemaker Season 2, featuring eight episodes written by Gunn. The DC Films co-chief also directs three episodes in the second season.

Frank Grillo is a formidable action star with plenty of roughhousing on his IMDB page. He played Brock Lumlow, aka Crossbones, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in addition to mixing it up with Mel Gibson and Naomi Watts for Joe Carnahan’s Boss Level. Grillo recently joined the cast of Taylor Sheridan and Sylvester Stallone’s Tulsa King, playing Bill Bevilaqua, a Kansas City mobster interested in Tulsa.

Grillo has six post-production projects, including Steven C. Miller’s Werewolves, an action horror film about two scientists who try to stop a mutation that turns people into werewolves after being touched by a super-moon the year before. Meanwhile, DC’s Creature Commandos stars Anya Chalotra as Circe, Russ Bain as Craic Brother, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Indira Varma as Bride of Frankenstein, Maria Bakalova as Ilana Rostovic, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, and more.

We’ll bring you more details about Peacemaker Season 2 as the anticipated project continues toward the small screen.

In 2017, a video game based on the popular horror franchise Friday the 13th was released. That game and another called Dead by Daylight had an option where you get to stalk players as the killer and try to pick them off one by one. The new IFC Films and Shudder original, In a Violent Nature, takes a similar concept and has the audience experience a slasher movie from the point-of-view of the killer. Writer/Director Chris Nash brings us the twisty premise and IFC Films has released a new trailer for all of us to behold.

Here’s the official synopsis: When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it. The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back – along with anyone in his way.

The film stars Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Reece Presley, Liam Leone, Charlotte Creaghan, Lea Rose Sebastianis, Sam Roulston, Alexander Oliver, and Lauren Taylor. It was produced by Peter Kuplowsky and Shannon Hanmer.

Following the theatrical run, In a Violent Nature will be making its way to the Shudder streaming service. Shudder’s Samuel Zimmerman told Variety, “Chris had such a clarity of vision with what this film is. It takes elements of very classical slashers and the very classical slasher aesthetic, but I understood the language he wanted to tell it in. At the time he was talking about films like Gerald Kargl’s Angst, which is one of my favorite home invasion films from Austria from the early ’80s. It has really revolutionary cinematography, so I knew he wanted to make this artful slasher that didn’t reject the hallmarks, but evolved the language of it forward and gave you a different perspective by tying you to the monster himself.“

Scott Shooman, the head of AMC Networks film group (which owns Shudder), added: “When you surrender yourself to this movie at the theater, it’s a different experience. It’s got the best slasher kills. It’s why we share armrests: To have the experience of something like In a Violent Nature in the theater.“

IFC will release the film UNRATED in theaters on May 31.

gunmen 1994

The other day, one of our writers sat down with Mario Van Peebles to talk about his upcoming spiritual sequel to Posse, Outlaw Posse. In the pretty awesome conversation, we asked Mario about what we consider a pretty underrated movie of his, Gunmen. This 1994 action flick paired him with Christopher Lambert, with an all-star cast that included Denis Leary as the film’s villain, Patrick Stewart, and nineties dream girl Brenda Bakke, as well as 90s rappers like Big Daddy Kane, Eric B, Rakim, Doctor Dre and Ed Lover – who all played themselves. It’s a tough movie to find these days, but Peebles had fond memories of what they were trying to accomplish with it.

Gunmen tips a hat to The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. My character, Christophe’s character, and the other character have a piece of the puzzle as to where the cachet of gold is. And we also have serious trust issues, but for good reasons…”

Indeed, Peebles is playing an Eastwood-esque figure (The Good) while Lambert is like the movie’s version of Eli Wallach (The Ugly), and Leary is definitely Lee Van Cleef (The Bad). Peebles mentioned that one of the best things about making that movie was the friendship he developed with Lambert, with the two getting along so well Peebles and him re-teamed immediately after for Highlander: The Final Dimension (which we just did a WTF episode about).

“Lambert was fun. We had a blast on that movie,” remembered Peebles. “And you can never understand him (laughs), the guy should have subtitles. I go to talk to him, ‘Chris what did you think’, and he goes  ‘Oui, tres, tres bien, we go over there Mario – you know what I’m saying! (Mario throws his hands up in confusion). No one knows what he said!”

Despite language issues, Peebles had nothing but love for his co-star. “But we had so much fun. We had this scene – we just made up stuff – there’s a scene where he’s trying to get the information on this gold, but he has me prisoner and we’re by this campfire at night. And my character’s asleep, and I’m chained up so he won’t let me free,” he remembers. “So I doze off and he’s trying to stay awake so he can talk to me because I’m sleep-talking. So I’m talking to him in my sleep, ‘the gold, the gold,’ so he comes right up to my face, ‘yes, yes, where is the gold’ and I start going, ‘Ooh baby, I’ll tell ya, just gimme a kiss,’ and he starts leaning in to kiss me, and I go, ‘you would have kissed me, you stupid son-of-a- (starts laughing) and we messed with each other. In life, we did that because we just clowned out and crazy stuff we did would come out, so it was a really fun time. We shot it down in Puerto Vallarta, and we just had a blast, man!”

Sadly, Gunmen is one of those movies that are really hard to find in a decent HD copy nowadays, with only an older DVD edition being widely available. Hopefully someone will dig this (and another great Lambert title – Fortress) up and give it a nice release. Do you think Gunmen deserves a Best Movie You Never Saw episode?
