Month: June 2024

Back in October, we learned that Warner Bros. Animation and director Pete Browngardt are set to bring us a new Looney Tunes Movie that sounds like a blast: it’s called The Day the Earth Blew Up, and it’s a sci-fi comedy adventure about Daffy Duck and Porky Pig dealing with an alien invasion! The movie is expected to reach theatres later this year, although a release date hasn’t yet been announced – and in anticipation of the release, a sneak peek video has arrived online! In the clip embedded above, we get to see how Daffy and Porky prepare for a home inspection.

In The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, Daffy and Porky (both voiced by Eric Bauza) learn that aliens are plotting to overtake the planet, which leads the pair to put their differences aside and help save the world.

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie will be having its world premiere today at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The Hollywood Reporter notes that this is “the first fully animated Looney Tunes feature to debut with a theatrical run.” The previous Looney Tunes features to receive theatrical releases were all combinations of live-action and animation: Space Jam, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and Space Jam: A New Legacy. The Day the Earth Blew Up is lucky to make it out into the world at all in this current era of Warner Bros., which has seen multiple projects – including Batgirl, some Scooby Doo projects, and even the Looney Tunes movie Coyote vs. Acme – get scrapped as tax write-offs.

When The Day the Earth Blew Up was first announced, Sam Register, the president of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, said that, “Our artists have created an incredible Looney Tunes film that follows in the cinematic tradition of when audiences first fell in love with these characters.

Are you a Looney Tunes fan, and are you looking forward to catching The Day the Earth Blew Up on the big screen later this year? Check out the sneak peek video, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

Apple, AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been creeping into our lives more and more, bringing equal measure of praise and controversy. According to THR, Apple is looking to step into the AI waters in a big way with Apple Intelligence, “a suite of AI tools and features that will be integrated across all of its operating bringing [generative] AI tech like LLM-powered text writing and editing and generated AI images to iPhones and Macs.

The company made the announcement during its annual keynote for the Worldwide Developer Conference in Cupertino, California, adding that it’s made a deal with OpenAI to integrate the ChaptGPT chatbot into Siri and Apple’s other apps. “We’re thrilled to introduce a new chapter in Apple innovation. Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products — and what our products can do for our users,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a statement. “Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence. And it can access that information in a completely private and secure way to help users do the things that matter most to them. This is AI as only Apple can deliver it, and we can’t wait for users to experience what it can do.

Some of the new features include Rewrite, which will assist users with whatever they write and, thanks to integrated ChatGPT, even “help users generate content for anything they are writing about.” On the image front, there’s Image Playground, which allows users to generate images in three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. There’s also Genmoji, which will let users create their very own emoji by typing what they want it to be and allowing the system to generate it. Apple didn’t reveal any video-generating tools (such as OpenAI’s Sora) but you have to imagine they won’t be far behind.

Hollywood writers and actors fought against AI last summer during lengthy strikes, seeking to make a deal to dictate how the technology can be used in film and television projects. The technology is progressing so rapidly that many in Hollywood fear for their jobs. According to a study done at the beginning of the year, a whopping three-quarters of those surveyed indicated that AI tools “supported the elimination, reduction or consolidation of jobs at their companies.” The report also estimated that nearly 204,000 positions will be adversely affected over the next three years.

Transformers One, first reactions, Annecy screening

An unfinished version of Transformers One was screened at the Annecy Animation Festival earlier today, and the audience gave it a rousing standing ovation. Although those who saw the Transformers One screening have been sworn to silence, the first reactions that have emerged paint a very positive picture.

Director Josh Cooley introduced the movie, saying, “I’m very, very excited. So much talent and nostalgic love has gone into this movie.” He also thanked the team behind the film as the “greatest animators and CG artists in the world,” while also giving a shout-out to Industrial Light & Magic. Turning to the audience, he added, “I want to thank you all for being ‘audience one.’

The Annecy audience broke into applause and laughter at several moments throughout the screening, with a rousing standing ovation showing just how much they loved the movie. It’s still early, and the film isn’t completely finished, but this type of reaction certainly bodes well for the first animated Transformers movie in nearly forty years.

Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry star as Orion Pax/Optimus Prime and D-16/Megatron, respectively. The cast also includes Scarlett Johansson as Elita, Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion. Josh Cooley directs from a script by Andrew Barrer, Steve Desmond, and Gabriel Ferrari. The animated movie tells the “long-awaited origin story of how the most iconic characters in the Transformers universe, Orion Pax and D-16, went from brothers-in-arms to become sworn enemies, Optimus Prime and Megatron.

Should the film do well, we could see more as franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has teased that Transformers One will set up a “natural trilogy” that would continue the story of Optimus Prime and Megatron.

We’re hoping that there is enough emotional construct to that, that would lead to a trilogy of it because, personally, I think there’s a natural trilogy,” he said. “I’m not always looking to do multiple movies, but there’s a natural trilogy around their relationship. So, you’re going to see Cybertron in a way you’ve never seen it, that no one’s ever seen it before. Because we’re doing an animation, we’re allowed to really go all out. If you tried to make this live-action, it would probably be a billion-dollar movie or something.

Transformers One is set to hit theaters on September 20th.

28 Years Later, Erin Kellyman

Deadline reports that Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story) has joined the cast of 28 Years Later, the first installment of Sony’s new trilogy, which will follow 28 Days Later and 28 Months Later.

Exactly who Erin Kellyman will play in 28 Years Later is being kept under wraps, but she joins a cast which includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O’Connell. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original movie, is also expected to return in a “surprising way.” The first installment of the 28 Years Later trilogy will be directed by Danny Boyle and scripted by Alex Garland, with production expected to kick off later this year.

Kellyman is best known for her roles in Solo as well as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, The Green Knight, and Willow. She will next be seen starring alongside Saoirse Ronan and Harris Dickinson in Steve McQueen’s Blitz for Apple TV+. The actress also recently wrapped production on Eleanor the Great, which serves as the directorial debut of Scarlett Johansson.

It’s been over twenty years since Danny Boyle and Alex Garland brought us 28 Days Later. While the blood-thirsty characters aren’t technically zombies, the film is still credited with helping to bring the zombie genre back to life. The film was followed by 28 Weeks Later, but Boyle and Garland were only involved as executive producers. Fans have been demanding a follow-up for years, and not only is it finally happening, but we’ll be getting three movies. Exciting times.

Although Garland is expected to script each installment of the trilogy, the second movie will be helmed by someone else. It was reported earlier this year that Nia DaCosta (Candyman) was in talks to helm the 28 Years Later sequel. While it may seem a little quick to lock down a director for the sequel before the first movie has even been shot, the plan is for production on the second movie to kick off just as soon as the first wraps.

28 Years Later will hit theaters on June 20, 2025.
