The Fall Guy, Stunt, Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been under pressure to include a new stunt category at the Oscars for years, but it just hasn’t happened… yet

While speaking with Empire, Academy CEO Bill Kramer said, “We’re talking to members of the stunt community who are Academy members about the possibility of that. We added a new award that will launch in two years for Casting Directors, so we’re always open to those discussions.” The new award Kramer mentions was announced earlier this year. It will recognize achievement in casting and will first be presented during the 2026 Oscar ceremony. Prior to this, the last new Oscar category was Best Animated Feature, which was announced in 2001, with Shrek taking home the inaugural award.

The Academy is like a living, breathing organism,” Academy President Janet Yang said. “We listen to our members, and if there’s really strong support and there’s whole mechanisms for how to advance the cause, and they’re interested… That’s what happened with Casting. We’ve created new branches over the decades. So it does evolve, and it evolves with the changing industry.” Seeing as it took over 20 years to create a new category, many are hoping that a stunt category won’t take nearly as long.

Those who have called for a stunt Oscar include John Wick director Chad Stahelski, who said last summer that talks with the Academy have actually been quite positive. “We’ve been meeting with members of the Academy and actually having these conversations, and, to be honest, it’s been nothing but incredibly positive, incredibly instructional,” Stahelski said. “I think, for the first time, we’ve made real movement forward to making this happen.” The director added that he could see it happening in the next three or four years at the latest.

The recent release of The Fall Guy was seen as a love letter to stunts and stunt performers and certainly sparked an interest in a stunt category at the Oscars. Unfortunately, the film has underperformed at the box office and has already been released on VOD, less than three weeks after its premiere.

Carnosaur

Universal Pictures keeps on pumping out Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies and cartoons – in fact, another Jurassic World movie will be reaching theatres in 2025, and there are two seasons of the animated series Jurassic World: Chaos Theory dropping onto the Netflix streaming service this year. But while that’s all cool to have, one dinosaur series I wish had more installments is the Carnosaur franchise, which was produced by the late, great Roger Corman. The first Carnosaur (which was inspired by a novel written by Harry Adam Knight) was released in 1993 as a mockbuster alternative to Jurassic Park, and was followed by Carnosaur 2 in 1995 and Carnosaur 3: Primal Species in 1996. Sadly, while there were two spin-offs of sorts with Raptor in 2001 and The Eden Formula in 2006, we haven’t gotten an actual Carnosaur movie in almost thirty years, and no sort-of spin-offs in almost twenty years. While I hope Carnosaur will get some sort of revival, author Joseph Palinkas has decided to look back at the films we have gotten from this franchise with the book History of Carnosaur, which is now available for purchase on Amazon.

History of Carnosaur has a page count of 160 and the following description: 30 years ago, Carnosaur was dropped into theaters, making a solid box office and starting a pulpy fun run of 1990s creature feature dinosaur carnage. 30 years later… for the first time, behold, History of CARNOSAUR. A varied, brisk dive into the beginnings and lifetime of this beloved series. With some help from Adam Simon, Louis Moreau, Ted Haines, Scott Valentine, Brandon Tenold and many more! Explore the roots of the 1984 Carnosaur by Harry Adam Knight, all the way to The Eden Formula. Featuring exclusive interviews and photos. Edited by Patrick Galvan. Formatted by John LeMay.

Palinkas told the folks at Dread Central that he was inspired to write this book because, “I was allowed by my father to rent the [Carnosaur] VHS at Family Video in Ionia, Michigan. I will never forget that night. The dreadful fun fear of the box art… I had no idea what to expect… I remember watching it in agony. The gore was realistic… the lighting and atmosphere were unlike any other horror sequences I experienced at that point in my life (I was thirteen). I was already watching a good number of classic horror, Freddy, Jason, Halloween, and other random shit from the 70s and 80s. I remember being nervous about standing near the back screen door… all I could imagine was that Deinonychus and its out-worldly but familiar screech popping into my vision. The hippie scene is unforgettable. After I read Brosnan’s novel [in 2012], I had two issues… it was pitch black out, kind of a warm night, I did not stop reading until midnight… I could also imagine around every corner… a Carnosaur could come out and slam my head in. The other issue was… why the hell is this novel is obscure?… It’s a great story and horrifying. Perfection. I wanted more… I wanted to know EVERYTHING about the series.” To read more from Palinkas about the process of putting the History of Carnosaur together, click over to the Dread Central link.

I am definitely interested in knowing all there is to know about the History of Carnosaur. Are you a Carnosaur fan, and will you be picking up a copy of this book? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Yellowstone spinoff, Kurt Russell

Although Yellowstone is set to come to an epic conclusion with its final season, we haven’t seen the last of the Dutton family, not by a long shot. A new Yellowstone spinoff series will continue the story, and according to Jeff Sneider, the legendary Kurt Russell is circling a role in the project.

Nothing has been confirmed at the moment, but Kurt Russell has been mentioned before in relation to Yellowstone. The Tombstone actor is no stranger to the genre, and it would be easy to imagine him joining the franchise. It reported last month that Cole Hauser, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes would be reprising their roles of Rip, Beth, and Kayce in the new show, and another Hollywood icon could be joining them: Michelle Pfeiffer.

Matthew Belloni mentioned Pfeiffer’s possible involvement in Puck earlier this year, saying the actress was actually closer to committing to the spinoff than Matthew McConaughey, who was previously announced to be leading the show. McConaughey reportedly won’t sign a deal until he sees a script from creator Taylor Sheridan. Until something official is announced, you shouldn’t take this as a guarantee, but a Yellowstone spinoff with Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer among the cast would boast quite a lot of star power. That’s one way to make up for Kevin Costner’s exit.

Speaking of Costner, although his departure from the series was a shock, and we’re still not entirely clear on exactly what went on behind the scenes, the actor has expressed an openness to return. “I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to,” Costner said. “I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.

Would you like to see Kurt Russell join the Yellowstone franchise?

The Strangers: Chapter 1 Madelaine Petsch

Lionsgate just gave the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1 (read our review HERE) a theatrical release three weeks ago, on May 17th, so the movie is probably still showing on the big screen in some theatres – but Lionsgate already went ahead and gave the movie a digital release today, so you can get it on Amazon if you want to watch it in the comfort of your own home. And now that Chapter 1 has gotten its digital release, the first image from The Strangers: Chapter 2 has made its way online and can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Director Renny Harlin shot an entire trilogy of Strangers movies at the same time. We’ve heard that Lionsgate will also be releasing The Strangers: Chapter 2 by the end of the year, with The Strangers: Chapter 3 following soon after.

Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale)  has the lead role in this trilogy and is joined in the cast of the films by Froy Gutierrez (Cruel Summer), Rachel Shenton (All Creatures Great and Small), Gabriel Basso (Hillbilly Elegy), and Ema Horvath (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power). The Strangers: Chapter 1 centers on Petsch’s character as she drives cross-country with her longtime boyfriend (Gutierrez) to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest. When their car breaks down in Venus, Oregon, they’re forced to spend the night in a secluded Airbnb, where they are terrorized from dusk till dawn by three masked strangers. Lionsgate plans from there to expanding the story in new and unexpected ways with its sequels.

The new Strangers trilogy was filmed in Slovakia. Courtney Solomon produced them with Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Charlie Dombeck, and Alastair Birlingham. Andrei Boncea, Dorothy Canton, and Roy Lee serve as executive producers. Rafaella Biscayn, Frame Film SK, Johanna Harlin, Juan Garcia Peredo, and Alberto Burgueno are co-producing. The first film has earned an R rating for “horror violence, language and brief drug use.”

Harlin has said The Strangers: Chapter 1 “is close to the original movie in its set-up of a young couple in an isolated environment in a house and a home invasion happening for random reasons.” Then Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 “explore what happens to the victims of this kind of violence and who the perpetrators are of this kind of violence. Where are they coming from and why?

Lawrence Gray, Jared Leto

Deadline reports that Jared Leto is set to star in a new film inspired by the real-life case of Dr. Lawrence Gray, a retired professor turned thief who allegedly stole over $1 million worth of art and jewels from various homes.

The untitled film is based on the article The Talented Dr. Gray by Steve Kroft and Howard L. Rosenberg, which was published in Graydon Carter’s Air Mail in 2022. Andy Bellin (Lovelace) is writing the script. “The moment I read the article, I knew this would make an incredible movie,” Bellin said. “The real hook here is the psychology of Dr. Gray and the fantastic twists that come along with it. This story explores the perceived perfect lives of privilege and glamour, which is actually a world of cunning, subterfuge and deception. We’re so lucky that Jared has the same drive for such complex characters; and that h.wood Media sees what we see in this project.

Dr. Gray is a retired political science professor from John Cabot University who allegedly used his “impeccable manners and elite social connections” to orchestrate sophisticated thefts from the homes of well-off acquaintances he met at elite social events for over a decade. He also allegedly stole from his longtime lover, Jacqueline Quillen, the granddaughter of investment banker and physicist Alfred Lee Loomis.

Quillen’s son, Parker, sued Gray in 2020, accusing him of stealing numerous valuables,” reads Deadline’s article. “Quillen passed away later that year, and the lawsuit was settled confidentially, with Gray making a payment to her estate. Maintaining his innocence, Gray claims that he was persecuted by Quillen’s family due to their disapproval of his relationship with her.

The movie will change things up somewhat, taking Jared Leto from the United States to London, where his Lawrence Gray “woos his way into the homes of English bluebloods and international ambassadors, and sets his sights on relics of the Great British Empire.” The character will obviously be a little younger in this incarnation, as the real-life Dr. Gray was in his late ’60s and early ’70s when he allegedly organized his crimes. In addition to starring in the film, Leto will also produce alongside Emma Ludbrook through their production company Paradox.

Leto recently wrapped production on Tron: Ares, which will hit theaters on October 10, 2025.

Mad Max franchise mastermind George Miller recently brought us a new addition to the series with the release of the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa (read our review HERE) – and while that movie struggles to draw in viewers during its theatrical run, we have decided to take a look back at the first Mad Max sequel, the 1981 classic The Road Warrior (watch it HERE). You can hear all about it in the embed above!

Directed by Miller from a screenplay he crafted with Terry Hayes and Brian Hannant, The Road Warrior – which is also known as Mad Max 2 outside of the United States – has the following synopsis: After avenging the death of his wife and young son at the hands of a vicious gang leader, Max drives the post-apocalyptic highways of the Australian outback, fending off attacks from nomadic tribes that prey on outsiders. Falling into an encampment led by the relatively peaceful Pappagallo, Max at first schemes to take their oil, but soon becomes the group’s reluctant defender against the hulking Humungus and his ruthless marauders.

The film stars Mel Gibson as Max. Along in the cast are Bruce Spence, Mike Preston, Max Phipps, Vernon Wells, Kjell Nilsson, Emil Minty, Virginia Hey, William Zappa, Arkie Whiteley, Steven J. Spears, Syd Heylen, Moira Claux, David Downer, David Slingsby, Kristoffer Greaves, Max Fairchild, Tyler Coppin, and Jimmy Brown.

The The Road Warrior episode of Revisited was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
