Mike Tyson, Jake Paul, fight, boxing match, postponed, Netflix

The debut of live boxing events on Netflix kicks off with a match between former Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson and YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. The event was slated to take place on July 20th, but Tyson’s medical team has requested the delay after the famed boxer experienced a recent ulcer flare-up and needs to take a step back from training to recover. “During a follow-up consultation on Thursday with medical professionals on his recent ulcer flare-up, the recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations,” said event organizer Most Valuable Promotions.

Netflix has now found a suitable date for the bout, which will be later this fall on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Nakisa Bidarian, Co-Founder of Most Valuable Promotions, has stated, “Our team has worked diligently with all parties involved to reschedule this monumental fight to a date that ensures both Jake Paul and Mike Tyson are fully prepared, with equal training time, as well as allowing us to keep the event at AT&T stadium in the midst of the Cowboys season. We appreciate the outstanding dedication, collaboration, and flexibility of our partners at Netflix and AT&T Stadium. Paul vs. Tyson is the most cross generational sporting event in history, and we are committed to providing fans worldwide with this unforgettable night of boxing, live globally on Netflix. We look forward to seeing everyone on Friday, November 15 for a showdown that will be talked about for generations to come.”

Tyson has also made a statement, saying, “Although we had to postpone the fight, I will resume training shortly.  I am thankful to the medical staff that treated me and to MVP, Netflix, and AT&T Stadium for working diligently to find the best reschedule date for all parties. While we have a new date, the result will be the same no matter when we fight. Jake Paul is getting knocked out. On Friday, November 15, watch this in-person at AT&T Stadium or live on Netflix.”

Netflix thanks its fans for their understanding and support. Previously purchased tickets will be honored for Friday, November 15. No action is needed to keep current tickets and current seat locations. Tickets are still available HERE. Those unable to attend the rescheduled date are eligible for refund at their original point of purchase until July 8, 2024. To request a refund, contact SeatGeek at dallascowboys@seatgeek.com with the subject line “Paul vs. Tyson”. After July 8, 2024 tickets will no longer be available for a refund and your tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled date.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game from Gun Interactive was just released for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One back on August 18th, and the developers have been keeping a steady flow of updates coming ever since. Last month, they announced that a new killer character called Hands will be added to the game on June 11th – and with just a few days to go before that date arrives, they have revealed more information about Hands – including the fact that he’s someone who was originally created by Kim Henkel, Tobe Hooper’s co-writer on the original Chainsaw film, and was the one who inspired Leatherface to start wearing masks of human flesh!

As written on the game’s official website, “Hands is a distant cousin to the Slaughter Family. The talented Robert Mukes (House of 1000 Corpses) brings this 7ft tall, nearly 350 lbs man, to life. Armed with a hammer and electronic traps, Robert makes Hands a force to be reckoned with.

While Hands is a drag racing legend in Texas, what residents in town don’t know is that he’s got a dark, violent, and gruesome nature. He’s the type of man who gets into grisly altercations at sleazy, run-down biker hangouts. During one of these fights, Hands beats a man to death, rips his face off, and proceeds to wear it as some kind of sick joke. This comes as no surprise as Hands is massive, extremely powerful, and can and will kill you with his bare hands in minutes. After that altercation, Uncle Hands gives this human “mask” trophy to Leatherface, inadvertently creating a lifelong obsession for the kid.” More information on what the addition of Hands brings to the video game can be found at the website link. I really don’t like that as the explanation for why Leatherface became fascinated with masks of human flesh… but who am I to argue with the co-creator of the character?

Creative director Ronnie Hobbs provided the following statement: “Being able to work with Kim Henkel to bring his original vision of Hands to life from his character bible has been both gratifying and amazing. Honoring authenticity and adding more layers to the lore of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has been a dream come true. I hope players will find him as terrifying and brutal as I do.

Robert Mukes added: “I am so excited for folks to see what I brought to the table with Hands. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of my all time favorite horror movies. I first saw it at 12 years old and thought it was a documentary because it felt so real. It’s amazing that I now get to work with an IP that means so much to me. With Kane Hodder doing stunt coordination, I had a blast mo-capping Hands as I used his hammer to bash Victims upside the head.

Matches of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game pit 4 victim characters against 3 killer characters. The story of the game has the following set-up: When Maria Flores went missing, and local law enforcement seemed to stall out in their search, her younger sister Ana teamed up with some of Maria’s friends from college to pick up the trail. The game takes place before the events of director Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (watch it HERE).

Kane Hodder (who also worked on Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III) did the motion-capture performance for Leatherface in the game, as well as the Grandpa character. Other motion-capture performers include Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs) as The Hitch-hiker; Troy Burgess (Swedish Dicks) as The Cook; Kristina Klebe (Don’t Kill It) as new killer character Sissy; and Dove Meir (Dig) as new killer character Johnny. Scout Taylor-Compton (Rob Zombie’s Halloween) did the mo-cap for all of the female victim characters while Hunter C. Smith (Lucky) did the mo-cap for all of the male victim characters. Although Whalen did the mo-cap for the Hitch-hiker, Edwin Neal, who played the character in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, provided his voice for the game. Damian Maffei (The Strangers: Prey at Night) provided the voice of Johnny, and Michael Johnston of Teen Wolf did the same for Danny. BAFTA winner Cissy Jones did the mo-cap and vocal performance for Nancy. You can find out more about the killer characters at THIS LINK and the victim characters HERE. twilight of the gods

Zack Snyder‘s partnership with Netflix continues as the Rebel Moon director follows up his ode to Star Wars and Seven Samurai with a new anime from The Stone Quarry and Xilam Animation. Xilam Animation is responsible for such projects as Oggy and the CockroachesZig & Sharko, and Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life for Disney+, all of which they’ve created and produced. Snyder’s new show, Twilight of the Gods, is an anime that he co-created that’s based on Norse mythology. Netflix has now released a first look at the new dark and violent limited series with previously unreleased images.

The synopsis from Netflix Tudum reads,
“In a mythical world of great battles, great deeds, and great despair, Leif (Stuart Martin), a mortal king, is saved on the battlefield by Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks), an iron-willed warrior with whom he falls in love. On their wedding night, Sigrid and Leif survive a wrath of terror from Thor (Pilou Asbæk), which sets them — and a crew of crusaders — on a merciless mission for vengeance, against all odds. This heroic story of love, loss, and revenge, is a journey to hell and beyond … across fantastical lands, battlefields fierce and bloody, and wars waged against deities and demons.”

The cast for the series was revealed back in 2021 during Netflix’s Geeked Week. The voice talents include John Noble (Fringe) as the voice of Odin, Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) as Thor, Paterson Joseph (Timeless) as Loki,  Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead) as Inge, Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049) as Sigrid, Stuart Martin (Dampyre) as Leif, Rahul Kohli (The Haunting of Bly Manor) as Egill, Jamie Clayton (Sense8) as Seid-Kona, Kristopher Hivju (Game of Thrones) as Andvari, Peter Stormare (The Big Lebowski) as Ulfer, Jamie Chung (Big Hero 6) as Hel, and Corey Stoll (Ant-Man) as Hrafnkel.

Snyder created the series alongside Jay Olivia, who will also be directing, and Eric Carrasco. Twilight of the Gods is executive produced by Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, and Wesley Coller. The show will be produced by Zack and Deborah Snyder’s production company, The Stone Quarry.  In addition to being a co-creator, Carrasco also serves as a producer. Oliva has directed multiple DC animated features, including Justice League DarkBatman: Bad Blood, and Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox

This will be one of the many anime projects Snyder is developing for Netflix which will include an adaptation of his recent zombie film, Army of the Dead, which will be titled, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.

Twilight of the Gods will hit Netflix in the Fall of 2024.

At the start of 2023, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros., and soon after that deal was made, we heard that his first movie for Warner Bros. would be Trap, a “psychological thriller set at a concert”. That project made its way through production toward the end of last year, with lead roles going to Josh Hartnett, fresh off his appearance in Oppenheimer (pictured below), and Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka. Now the film’s August 9th theatrical release date is swiftly approaching – and the latest bit of promotional material to be unveiled is a lyric video for the original song “Release.” The song first dropped online at the end of April, but now we have a video go along with it. Saleka recorded this song for the movie, where she plays a pop star called Lady Raven. You can watch the video in the embed above.

As JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray described the trailer after seeing it at CinemaCon, “Saleka plays a Taylor Swift-style pop star known as Lady Raven, with Josh Harnett’s character attending alongside his daughter. He quickly discovers that the concert is a trap designed to lure a serial killer known as The Butcher, but it turns out that Harnett is the serial killer!” We had previously heard (via FilmUpdates) that Saleka – who is an R&B singer/songwriter – plays “a popstar whose concert is at the heart of the story.” Hartnett’s character is “a father who takes his child to a concert, and unwittingly gets caught up in the surrounding events.” Saleka has recorded songs for her father’s previous projects Old and Servant, but this marks her acting debut.

Hartnett has said that Trap is “very bizarre, very dark, and wild.”

Since Shyamalan produces and finances his own movies, he was able to get a SAG interim agreement for Trap (which filmed under the codename Good Grades) that allowed the project to go into production before the Screen Actors Guild strike wrapped up. His daughter Ishana was also able to get a SAG Interim deal for her feature directorial debut, the gothic fairy tale The Watchers. That film is set up at Warner Bros. as well and has a June 7, 2024 theatrical release date. (That’s today!)

Here’s what Shyamalan had to say about Trap in an interview he did with NME a while back: “I have a new idea that I’ve started writing. It’s out in 2024 and it’s very, very exciting. It’s a thriller. It’s very unusual and very new compared to what I’ve been trying to do [recently], but I’m feeling very excited about the story, so much so that I can’t wait to tell it to you guys. I love that feeling, that electricity of ‘wow, I can’t wait for you to see it’. I will say this, the angle into the story is why it’s so exciting. The story might be something that you’ve seen before but the angle is very, very unique – the point of view.

Are you looking forward to seeing Trap on the big screen? What do you think of the song “Release,” by Saleka / Lady Raven? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Will Smith movies

Keep those hot sauces out your f*ckin’ mouth! Will Smith recently appeared on First We Feast’s interview show Hot Ones to promote this weekend’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die. And while that movie is looking to be one of the best of the series, Will Smith picked a handful of other movies that he considers his best.

After Sean Evans set up The Last Dab Xperience – a hot sauce which has a Scoville level of 2,693,000 – the host challenged Will Smith to name his Mouth Rushmore of movies, to which – in between tears – the guest obliged. “In terms of all around best movies, best performances, if I had to put four of them in a time capsule, it would be Pursuit of Happyness, the first Men in Black, it would be I Am Legend, and probably King Richard.”

Will Smith would go on to explain why Men in Black is such a favorite for him and also name a couple of other movies that didn’t make the cut. “Right behind [The Pursuit of Happyness] is the first Men in Black. The direction and cinematography and music. I think, among the most fun I’ve ever had making a movie is Bad Boys and Aladdin…just the most fun.”

It’s probably no surprise that Will Smith named two of the movies that earned him Oscar nominations as personal favorites: 2006’s The Pursuit of Happyness and 2021’s King Richard, for which he actually won Best Actor. His first Oscar nod came for 2001’s Ali, which he noted was “the hardest I’ve ever been hit on a movie set.” Oh, so that’s a bad thing

Will Smith has more than 30 years on the big screen, so there is plenty to choose from if you were to rank his movies. What would you name as your top four?

PLOT: A young artist gets stranded in an extensive, immaculate forest in western Ireland, where, after finding shelter, she becomes trapped alongside three strangers, stalked by mysterious creatures each night.

REVIEW: There’s no denying that there’s a tremendous amount of pressure on writer/director Ishana Shyamalan with her debut feature. Her father’s reputation will always follow her but let’s not pretend like that’s entirely a bad thing. Unlike many first-time directors, she was able to hone her craft as a 2nd Unit Director on many M Night productions. This allows her to skip some of the steps common for most young filmmakers, and avoid easy trappings. If there’s one thing that’s clear after experiencing The Watchers: we most definitely have two Shyamalans out in the world, for better or worse.

And it goes without saying that I’ll be avoiding spoilers as much as possible in this review as I think the fresher you go into this, the better.

(L-R) Olwen Fouéré, Oliver Finnegan, Dakota Fanning, and Georgina Campbell in The Watchers (2024).

The Watchers follows Mina as she gets lost in the forest and discovers a building harboring three others called The Coop. They claim that there’s something in the forest and if they don’t obey their rules, then the monsters will kill them. The mysterious beings can play visual tricks on them and mess with their minds, making it impossible for anyone who enters the forest to escape. There are some parallels to The Blair Witch Project, with people running around in circles, coming across the same locations repeatedly. That sense of being lost is palpable and each character has a sense of hopelessness.

Having grown up before most of our eyes on screen, there’s a certain familiarity when it comes to any Dakota Fanning character, and here is no exception. Mina manages to feel completely dimensional and work as a great audience surrogate. As frustrating as she can be at times, her behavior is more and more understandable as the narrative progresses. Rarely do I completely come around on a character after they make questionable choices, but it speaks to Fanning’s performance. Barbarian‘s Georgina Campbell is decent as Ciara and I’m happy to see her continue in the horror world. Olwen Fouéré is really starting to make a name for herself in the genre as well. I was also really tickled to see that Darwin the bird was actually voiced by someone. Oliver Finnegan delivers a good performance, but Daniel is a very frustrating character.

One element that I absolutely loved was the rules that the four humans had to follow. I love established rules in horror films because it sets an expectation for the viewer. Follow the rules and nothing bad will happen. We’re privy to the exact line that would cause chaos. So the fact that one of the characters is a perennial rulebreaker, means tension follows her every movement. However, the consequences for being out at night don’t hit quite as hard the further the film progresses. In fact, like most horror films, the more that’s explained, the less scary everything becomes. There are some moments that could be deemed unintentionally hilarious when they’re meant to be scary.

The Watchers (2024).

Based on a book by A.M. Shine and adapted by Ishana, The Watchers is a simple narrative that gets more and more complicated as the seconds tick away. Some may call it convoluted but I really enjoyed how it’s approached. There’s definitely still some sloppiness present in terms of the characters’ decision-making, but it always feels in service to the narrative. Whether it’s explaining the mysterious creatures further or showing us a character trait that will pay off later, everything is done with clear intention. Shyamalan has quite the eye and doesn’t go overboard with CGI or jump scares. There’s a simplicity to her camerawork that I really appreciated as every shot is filled with shadow and depth.

I think like her father’s work, Ishana’s The Watchers is going to be divisive. Either you’re on board for where the story goes or you think it’s stupid. I found myself in the former group and enjoyed the wacky time. There’s a bit of a false ending in the film, and I was rather annoyed when it seemed like that would be how it ended. But then it caps the story off in such a satisfying way that most of my prior annoyances were gone. Yes, the film ends with a twist, so if that’s an element that annoys you about M. Night then you’re in for a disappointment. But if you’re down for some fantastical silliness, there are worse ways to spend your time.

THE WATCHERS IS PLAYING ONLY IN THEATERS ON JUNE 7TH, 2024.
