Atlas, Jennifer Lopez, Netflix Top 10

Jennifer Lopez may have cancelled her summer concert tour less than a month before it was set to begin, but at least she’s got the number one movie on Netflix for the second week running. Right? Atlas is dominating the Netflix Top 10 list for the week of May 27th to June 2nd with 31.6M views, which works out to 63.1M hours viewed.

Atlas finds Lopez starring as a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it. The film was directed by Brad Peyton from a script by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite.

Although Atlas is sitting pretty on the Netflix Top 10 list, the film hasn’t received the best reviews, and our own Alex Maidy wasn’t impressed. “Atlas is a special effects-laden foray into the most cliched science fiction genre offering I have seen in a long time,” Maidy wrote. “With what is supposed to be a timely tale about artificial intelligence, Atlas throws every trope from the last fifty years of scifi movies as it aims to be Netflix’s attempt at a summer tentpole picture. Underwhelming in every way, Atlas is a directionless and limp mess that wastes the talents of everyone involved.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here.

The This Is Me… Live Tour was slated to launch on June 26th in Orlando, but Live Nation announced last week that it had been cancelled entirely, saying, “Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends.“ In her own statement, Lopez said, “I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…” It’s not entirely clear why the tour was cancelled, but there’s been speculation that it could have to do with poor ticket sales or the rumoured marital issues with husband Ben Affleck.

Shawn Levy, Avengers, Deadpool & Wolverine

As Deadpool & Wolverine stands ready to save the summer box office, Marvel Studios may be looking to director Shawn Levy to save the Avengers as well. Deadline has heard that Levy has been given Michael Waldron’s script for the next Avengers movie, and while no decisions have been made, it’s possible the studio may be eyeing him to direct the film.

Deadline adds that Marvel is “still planning to meet with other directors while they wait on a decision from [Levy].” However, he’s got some big projects on his slate. He will be “heavily involved” in the final season of Stranger Things and is also developing a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm. Even if Levy doesn’t end up directing the next Avengers movie, I’d wager that he definitely has a future at Marvel.

More to come…

Peaky Blinders movie, Netflix

Thomas Shelby is back. Deadline reports that the Peaky Blinders movie is officially a go at Netflix, with Cillian Murphy set to reprise his iconic role.

Tom Harper (Heart of Stone) will direct the Peaky Blinders movie for Netflix, marking his return to the franchise. He previously directed the last three episodes of the first season. Series creator Steven Knight has penned the script, with production kicking off later this year. Knight will co-produce alongside Murphy, Caryn Mandabach, and Guy Heeley. Executive producers include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason.

It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy said in a statement. “It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.

Knight added, “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.

When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” Harper said in his own statement. “Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.

Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being, but Knight has previously teased that it could be set during World War II. The series debuted in 2013 and followed the exploits of the Peaky Blinders crime gang in the direct aftermath of the First World War. After six seasons, the series came to an end in 2022, but Knight always knew it would continue in another form. While the Peaky Blinders movie is supposed to provide a “fitting conclusion” to the TV series, Knight has also teased that there “will be other TV shows… that will continue to tell the story of this part of society and this family.

Back in 2014, writer/director Patrick Brice and co-writer/star Mark Duplass teamed up with Blumhouse Productions to bring us the found footage horror film Creep – which was so well-received that a sequel, appropriately titled Creep 2, followed in 2017. Before Creep 2 was even released, Brice confirmed that a third film was in development and was meant to wrap everything up as a trilogy. Seven years have gone by and we haven’t heard much more about Creep 3 – but IndieWire has just broken the news that the Creep franchise is set to continue with a TV series called The Creep Tapes!

Created by Brice and Duplass, the first season of The Creep Tapes has already made it through production. Now it’s being shopped around to potential buyers.

Duplass provided the following statement: “The series is based on a collection of video tapes in the secret vault of the world’s deadliest and most socially uncomfortable serial killer, who hires his victims to film him for the day under false pretenses. Each episode exposes a new victim from one of the fabled ‘Creep Tapes.’

IndieWire also shared a quote from Duplass that explains why it has taken so long for a new Creep project to go into production: he wasn’t satisfied with Creep 2 and didn’t want to make another entry he wouldn’t be satisfied with. Back in 2020, he said, “We decided to make Creep 2. We had to almost kill ourselves to make that movie as good as it was. I appreciate how many people liked it but I do feel like it wasn’t as good as it could have been, if I’m being perfectly honest. If we’re going to make a third one, it’d better be super inspired. We are trying and we are putting effort into it, but we are not good enough yet to make it worthwhile, so we are struggling. That’s really it.

So it’s probably safe to assume that Brice and Duplass feel The Creep Tapes is a “super inspired” idea. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait long to see it.
