Killers of the Flower Moon, Jodie Foster

At nearly three-and-a-half hours, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon was already a long movie, but Jodie Foster thinks it could have been longer. In fact, she believes it should have been expanded into an eight-hour limited series.

Jodie Foster and Robert Downey Jr. chatted for Variety’s Actors on Actors, and both actors have recently had experiences with limited series, Foster with True Detective: Night Country and Downey Jr. with The Sympathizer.

This is the beauty of having limited series,” Foster said. “You can expand on a story. I was thinking of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ — extraordinary movie, three-and-a-half hours long. And I thought, ‘I wonder why they didn’t do it eight hours long’ — to be able to explore all these other people, and give them another perspective. The great thing about limited series is you can have that novelistic idea of going off into tangents and tying them together.

Based on David Grann’s best-selling crime thriller, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon tells the real-life mystery of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma in the 1920s, who became wealthy after oil was discovered beneath their land. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off, and the ensuing spiral of conspiracy, greed and murder got so bad that the FBI had to step in. There is certainly enough story and characters for Killers of the Flower Moon to be more than doubled in length, but some believe the movie was already too long, with certain theaters even tossing in an intermission without permission. Tsk tsk.

Although our own Chris Bumbray acknowledged the runtime in his review, he never had a problem with is as “Scorsese and his ace editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, know precisely how to pace a movie like this. It’s long, but it never drags, and indeed, part of me hopes the streaming version is even more extended as I’d love to dive even deeper into the material.” You can check out the rest of Bumbray’s review right here.

Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for Killers of the Flower Moon to be given a physical media release in North America.

Maya Hawke nepotism

Considering Quentin Tarantino’s close bond with Uma Thurman, it was practically destiny that daughter Maya Hawke would work with him. Maybe destiny isn’t the right word…perhaps what we’re looking for here is nepotism, that naughty word in Hollywood that sees children of celebrities being given opportunities because of who their parents are. But Maya Hawke isn’t bothered by nepotism one bit. In fact, she’s well aware that that’s why she was cast in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

In a piece in The Times, Maya Hawke acknowledged that Tarantino most certainly cast her as one of Charles Manson’s followers because of her parents, Thurman and Ethan Hawke. “I’ve been wildly made fun of for this clip when I said, on the red carpet, that I auditioned…I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic reasons — I think I totally did.” But Maya Hawke isn’t the only case of perceived nepotism found in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, as Rumer Willis – the oldest child of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore – and Margaret Qualley – daughter of Andie McDowell – also have small roles.

Plans to get Maya Hawke and Quentin Tarantino together have been circulating for years, as there was once the idea to have her play B.B. – daughter of Thurman’s Beatrix Kiddo – in Kill Bill Vol. 3, which would have been a rather meta version of nepotism.

But does Maya Hawke think she “deserves” these opportunities because of her famous parents? As she puts it, “‘Deserves’ is a complicated word. There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t, but I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway. And I know that my not doing it wouldn’t help anyone. I saw two paths when I was first starting, and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job and go to open casting roles…It’s OK to be made fun of when you’re in rarefied air. It’s a lucky place to be. My relationships with my parents are really honest and positive, and that supersedes anything anyone can say about it.”

Of note, Maya Hawke was recently directed by her father in Wildcat, which also featured her brother and Cooper Hoffman, son of Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Do you think nepotism is a genuine issue in Hollywood? Give us your take on the matter below.

Robert Downey Jr., Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr. set the tone for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe with his portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man, but after more than a decade, the actor bid farewell to the role in Avengers: Endgame. While it may seem like Downey Jr. has moved on from Marvel, he has been more vocal about his willingness to return over the last year.

While speaking with Jodie Foster for Variety’s Actors on Actors, Downey Jr. said he was “surprisingly open-minded” to returning as Tony Stark. “It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am,” he said. “I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea. Between ‘Nyad’ and [‘Night Country’] and, for me, ‘Oppenheimer’ and then ‘Sympathizer,’ it really is crazy because we look pretty good. I was actually looking at the stills we were taking, making sure: ‘Do we still look kind of OK?’ I’m like, ‘We look pretty good.’

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has previously said that they would not undo Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame. “We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again,” Feige said. “We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.” There are still plenty of ways for Robert Downey Jr. to return without undoing Stark’s death, including flashbacks, time travel, or even a Multiverse variant, but should it happen?

The MCU franchise has hit a rough patch since Avengers: Endgame, which has even forced the studio to take a breath and do a little creative retooling on their upcoming slate. Bringing back Tony Stark must feel like a good way to generate some interest, but the franchise should really be able to survive without him at this point. That said, there have been rumblings that Downey Jr. could return as a villainous Iron Man variant in Avengers: Secret Wars, and I must admit that has piqued my curiosity.

Downey Jr. was most recently seen playing multiple roles in The Sympathizer, an HBO miniseries based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. You can check out a review from our own Alex Maidy right here.

Would you like to see Robert Downey Jr. return as Iron Man (in any form), or should his character be left alone?

Exorcist, Mike Flangaan

After The Exorcist: Believer premiered to a lacklustre box office and scathing reviews, Blumhouse was forced to rethink its plans for what was supposed to be a new trilogy. Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan officially signed on to direct the next Exorcist movie last week, which is said to be a “radical new take” on the franchise. However, Flanagan is all too aware of the enormous responsibility of following in the footsteps of one of the best horror movies of all time.

Flanagan spoke about his new Exorcist movie at the ATX festival (via /Film), saying he’s “f***ing terrified” of tackling it. Although the first movie is deservedly iconic, the sequels that followed were very hit-and-miss, so I would argue that Flanagan would have to actively go out of his way to make the worst film in the franchise. The director admitted as much, saying, “The franchise has had its up and downs,” but he added that the Exorcist TV series (which lasted two seasons on Fox) was “one of the ‘ups’ in a big way, and I thought it was just brilliant.

While Flanagan may be nervous about the project, I think most fans have faith that he’ll deliver something decent. “I had a similar feeling when I signed on to ‘Doctor Sleep’ a few years back where I just kind of woke up a little nauseous every day,” he said. “We’ll see. We’ll see how it goes.” It also helps that this new project will not be a sequel to The Exorcist: Believer, giving Flanagan freedom to create something fresh.

The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold and terrifying within its universe,” Flanagan said in a statement last week. “Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.“ Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, added, “Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans, and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it.

What do you hope to see in Mike Flanagan’s Exorcist movie? Personally, I’d just like to be scared again.

Monkey Man

The Dev Patel-directed, Jordan Peele-produced action film Monkey Man (you can read our review at THIS LINK) reached theatres back at the start of April and underperformed at the box office, pulling in just $34 million worldwide. It received a digital release by the end of April and will be getting a 4K Blu-ray release in the UK this weekend – and Deadline has revealed that it will be available to watch on the Peacock streaming service next week! It’s set to start streaming on Peacock on June 14th.

As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him. Packed with thrilling and spectacular fight and chase scenes, Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel from his original story and his screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World).

Patel is joined in the cast by Sharlto Copley (District 9The A-Team), Sobhita Dhulipala (Made in HeavenThe Night Manager), Pitobash (Million Dollar ArmGo Goa Gone), Vipin Sharma (Hotel MumbaiLike Stars on Earth), Ashwini Kalsekar (Ek Tha Hero), Adithi Kalkunte (Hotel Mumbai), Sikandar Kher (Aarya24) and Makarand Deshpande (RRR).
