Josh Brolin, Knives Out 3, Wake Up Dead Man, Rian Johnson, Netflix

Rian Johnson is collecting stars for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, like Hideo Kojima scanning celebrities for cameos in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and the upcoming horror game OD. Johnson’s Knives Out 3 is chock full of Hollywood heavy-hitters, with Josh Brolin being the latest name added to the pile. The third chapter of Johnson’s whodunit series, Wake Up Dead Man, finds Daniel Craig reprising the role of Detective Benoit Blanc with Josh O’ Connor (Challengers, The Crown, God’s Own Country), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla, Civil War, On the Basis of Sex), Andrew Scott (Ripley, Victor Frankenstein, Pride), Kerry Washington (Scandal, Ray, Save the Last Dance), Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liasons, Guardians of the Galaxy), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye, Mystic River, Mayor of Kingstown), and Mila Kunis (That ’70s Show, The Spy Who Dumped Me, Black Swan) rounding out the cast.

Plot details remain a mystery, though production for Knives Out 3 begins in the U.K. in early June. From his script, Rian Johnson directs Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. He’s also producing with his T-Street studio partner, Ram Bergman. The first film in the series, Knives Out, occurred in a stately manor and revolved around a corrupt and toxic family’s dark secrets and desires. In contrast, the second chapter, Glass Onion, finds Benoit Blanc traveling to a remote island to disrupt a posh dinner party with murder on the menu. While Knives Out debuted exclusively in theaters, Netflix paid $450 million for two sequels.

After reprising his role as Gurney Halleck for Dune: Part Two, Josh Brolin returned to the ranch for more episodes of the Prime Video series Outer Range. Brolin plays Royal Abbott in the Western-tinged thriller, focusing on a rancher fighting for his land when his family discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness. The series, created by Brian Watkins, also stars Imogen Poots, Tamra Podemski, Lili Taylor, Tom Pelphrey, Lewis Pullman, Shaun Sipos, Noah Reid, Isabel Arraiza, Olive Abercrombie, and more.

What do you think about Josh Brolin joining the cast of Knives Out 3? Is Brolin the final actor to join the main cast, or is more to come? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Just under a year ago, we saw Viggo Mortensen’s The Dead Don’t Hurt at the Toronto International Film Festival. We loved this old-school western, which was written and directed by Mortensen, who also stars along with Vicky Krieps!

Today on our JoBlo Celebrity Interview Channel, our very own Eric Walkuski sits down with the two stars as Viggo discusses writing the story and how all the classic westerns he grew up watching played a crucial influence in bringing his vision of this film to life. Vicky Krieps also discusses her character, working alongside Viggo, and more!

Eric also sat down with the villain of the film Solly McLeod as he talks about the struggle of making his character empathetic given all the horrendous things he does. He also shares the experience of working with Viggo Mortensen on and off camera.  Finally, be sure to stick around as we also spoke with legendary character actor Danny Huston (soon to be seen in The Crow and Naked Gun remakes) as he shares the details and layers of his character as well.

The Dead Don’t Hurt is now playing in theaters. If you’re a western fan, give this one a watch. It’s terrific!

The Crow remake

Stuntman Chad Stahelski was close friends with actor Brandon Lee… and when Lee was killed in a tragic accident on the set of the 1994 version of The Crow, director Alex Proyas chose Stahelski to be Lee’s stand-in for the filming of scenes that still needed to be filmed involving Lee’s character Eric Draven. Lee’s face was then placed over Stahelski’s in post-production. Stahelski has gone on to become a director, taking the helm of each film in the John Wick franchise to date… and since he worked with Bill Skarsgard on John Wick: Chapter 4, it’s no surprise to hear that he supports the casting of Skarsgard in The Crow remake, which is set to reach theatres on August 23rd.

Commenting on Skarsgard’s performance in John Wick: Chapter 4, Stahelski told Esquire, “I think he’s my best villain ever.” As for his casting in The Crow, “When I heard Bill was doing it, I was like, ‘That’s a good take.’ I knew Bill was going to bring something different. Bill’s got that ethereal nature that makes him feel out of this world, or from another planet or existence.

As for the painstaking work that went into completing the original The Crow after Lee died, he said, “I had to sit for weeks with Alex Proyas and watch all of the footage. Face replacement was not very big at the time—you had to mimic everything.

Skarsgard is joined in the cast of The Crow remake by singer FKA twigs, who takes on the role of Shelly Webster, the love of Eric’s life. Danny Huston (Yellowstone) plays the lead villain. David Bowles (Brothers), Isabella Wei (1899), Laura Birn (A Walk Among the Tombstones), Sami Bouajila (The Bouncer), and Jordan Bolger (Peaky Blinders) are also in the cast.

Here’s the synopsis: Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgard) and Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) directed this take on The Crow, working from a screenplay by Oscar nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard). The remake is produced by Victor Hadida, Molly Hassell, John Jencks, and Edward R. Pressman. Dan Farah serves as executive producer.

Based on the comic book series created by James O’Barr, the first version of The Crow was released in 1994. Following the production of three sequels (each about a different resurrected character), a remake was first announced in late 2008… then it had to make a long journey through development hell. Several screenwriters came and went, scripts were written and scrapped, studios went bankrupt, and directors like Stephen Norrington, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and Francisco Javier Gutiérrez were all involved along the way. Actors up for the lead role during the long development period included Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, and Jack Huston.

american gladiators

Hit the theme song. The classic athletic challenge show American Gladiators will be gearing up for some new games as Amazon will now be rebooting the series. American Gladiators initially ran between 1989 and 1996 in syndication and is widely considered one of the first reality competition series. The show had amateur athletes that competed against each other as well as the shows’ own gladiators across a range of challenges and obstacle courses. The show was previously rebooted on NBC in 2008 with WWE wrestling star Hulk Hogan and Muhammad Ali’s daughter Laila Ali hosting.

Now, Deadline is reporting that Amazon has ordered a newer incarnation of American Gladiators for Prime Video. The rebooted series will be produced by MGM Alternative and Amazon MGM Studios for the streaming giant in association with Flor-Jon Films, the production company from American Gladiators co-creator Johnny C. Ferraro, who exec produces. All the fan-favorite games will be making a glorious return. They will include classic competitions such as Gauntlet, Hang Tough, and, of course, the ultimate obstacle course, The Eliminator.

This news comes about after a similar physical competition show was revamped for UK audiences. The British channel, BBC, would strike much success with a reboot of their show Gladiators. That version would go on to become its biggest entertainment series launch in almost a decade and was quickly renewed for a second season. Since the original, shows like American Ninja Warrior had taken the concept in different directions, but it showed that there was still an interest in these kinds of programs. The producers of American Ninja Warrior would even try to reboot American Gladiators themselves in 2014, but the show would never make it to air.

Another attempt was made in 2018 by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen for its 30th anniversary when they attempted to team up with MGM, but that also faltered. Then, in 2021, it was reported that MGM would team up with the WWE for a new version that same year. Lauren Anderson, head of Brand and Content Innovation at Amazon MGM Studios, would share her excitement for this new reboot, “Gladiators is an enduring, physical challenge format that continues to engage families around the world. We look forward to delighting our global Prime Video customers with both reimagined and nostalgic elements that celebrate the best of the original series.”
