Save the Green Planet

Director Yorgos Lanthimos is reteaming with his The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness star Emma Stone for Bugonia, a remake of the South Korean film Save the Green Planet – and today, Focus Features has announced that they will be giving Bugonia a wide theatrical release on November 7th, 2025!

Described as an eccentric black comedy, the original Save the Green Planet followed a disillusioned young man who captures and tortures a businessman whom he believes to be part of an alien invasion. A battle of wits ensues between the captor, his devoted girlfriend, the businessman and a private detective.

Here’s a longer synopsis: Joon-hwan Jang imagines the fate of the human race hinging on Byun-gu, a bitter, paranoid and eccentric beekeeper who, with the help of his tightrope walker girlfriend, Sooni, kidnaps a powerful and successful businessman, Man-sik. Byun-gu believes that Man-sik is an alien from the planet Andromeda, one of many hiding among us and plotting to destroy the Earth in a few days. Amphetamine-popping Byun-gu sees himself as the planet’s last hope, and sets about torturing Man-sik with relish, trying to convince him to contact the “Royal Prince” and call off Armageddon. A battle of wits and wills ensues, with Man-sik trying to convince his captors that he’s human and attempting to escape. Man-sik recognizes Byun-gu as a disgruntled former employee whose comatose mother suffers from a mysterious illness. It begins to seem that Byun-gu’s true motivation may be personal, but he’s still ruthlessly determined to get Man-sik to confess and cooperate, even if he has to risk killing him. Meanwhile, a dishevelled detective, Chu, and his young acolyte, Inspector Kim, discover that the person who kidnapped Man-sik may have struck several times before, always with deadly results.

The original film was directed by Joon-hwan Jang, and when the remake was first announced four years ago, it was said that Jang would be at the helm of the new take on the concept as well. But he ended up passing the helm over to Lanthimos. The Bugonia screenplay was written by Will Tracy, a writer on HBO’s Succession and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver who also co-wrote the genre film The Menu. His version of Save the Green Planet has the following synopsis: Two conspiracy obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.

Emma Stone is joined in the cast by Jesse Plemons, who was also in Kinds of Kindness.

Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe are producing Bugonia for Element Pictures, alongside Miky Lee and Jerry Ko for CJ ENM, Stone for Fruit Tree, Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen for Square Peg, and Lanthimos.

What better time to drop a Christmas-themed trailer than in the throughs of summer? Today, Amazon MGM Studios gave us the gift of the first Red One trailer, starring Dwayne Johnson (Moana, Jumanji franchise, Rampage) and Chris Evans (Knives Out, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Losers) as an odd couple of badasses joining forces to rescue Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons).

The Red One trailer is jam-packed with Christmas-time goodness. Everything from Krampus to mutant killer snowmen makes life difficult for Johnson and Evans as they race against time to locate and rescue Old St Nick.

Here’s the official plot synopsis courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios:

After Santa Claus – Code Name: RED ONE – is kidnapped, the North Pole’s Head of Security (Dwayne Johnson) must team up with the world’s most infamous bounty hunter (Chris Evans) in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas.

Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Bad Teacher, Sex Tape) directs Red One based on a story from Hiram Garcia. Chris Morgan wrote the screenplay. Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, and Wesley Kimmel join Johnson, Evans, and Simmons as primary cast members.

While today’s Red One trailer presents the film as a holly, jolly holiday romp with Johnson’s ceaseless charisma and Evans’s dry wit fueling the yule log fire, a concerning story about Johnson’s professionalism looms over the movie like Krampus stalking naughty children on Christmas Eve. According to a bombshell report, Johnson was frequently late to the set during production, resulting in late starts, fractured schedules, and millions in additional expenditures. “The only thing Dwayne was consistent at was being chronically late,” said one insider. The report states that Johnson was late, on average, seven to eight hours per day and even missed several days. According to the insiders quoted in the report, this cost the production at least $50 million. “It was a f***ing disaster,” the insider said. “Dwayne truly doesn’t give a f***.” However, other sources say that Johnson was never more than an hour late to set up, and a spokesperson for Amazon MGM flat-out denied any issues.

While the reports are concerning, that hasn’t stopped the team from assembling what looks like a thrilling, creative, and hilarious Christmas film. I had no idea what to expect from today’s Red One trailer and was pleasantly surprised by the preview. I’ve been a fan of killer mutant snowmen since my Calvin and Hobbes days. Bring it on!

Amazon MGM Studios will release Red One theatrically in the US on November 15, 2024, and worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures internationally this November.

Devon Sawa

Earlier this month, it was announced that Olivia Holt of Totally Killer and Mason Gooding from the two most recent Scream movies had signed on to star in the horror romantic comedy Heart Eyes, which is filming in New Zealand with Josh Ruben, the director of Werewolves Within and Scare Me, at the helm. Now Deadline reports that Jordana Brewster (The Fast and the Furious), Devon Sawa (Final Destination), and Gigi Zumbado (The Price We Pay) are also in the cast.

Scripted by Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon, Landon’s Freaky collaborator Michael Kennedy (who also wrote It’s a Wonderful Knife), and Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard), Heart Eyes has the following synopsis: When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.

We’ve been assuming that Holt and Gooding are playing the co-workers who have to run for their lives, but no details have been revealed about the characters being played by Brewster, Sawa, and Zumbado.

Ruben previously provided the following statement: “My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies. I’m excited as hell to mount my most challenging genre bender to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic rom-com universe.

Heart Eyes is set up at Spyglass, and Republic Pictures has picked up distribution rights to the film outside of the U.S. and Canada. Landon is producing the film with Divide/Conquer’s Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks. Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone serve as executive producers with Murphy and Mel Turner.

Are you interested in Heart Eyes? What do you think of Jordana Brewster, Devon Sawa, and Gigi Zumbado joining the cast of a slasher that’s coming our way from the folks who brought us films like Werewolves Within, Scare Me, Happy Death Day, Happy Death Day 2U, Freaky, and It’s a Wonderful Knife? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

I was already sold on this movie, but this casting news has me even more excited to check it out.
