Jaws

2025 will mark the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest movies ever made, director Steven Spielberg’s classic Jaws – and The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that National Geographic, Amblin Documentaries, and Nedland Media are teaming up to celebrate the anniversary with the documentary Jaws @ 50 (at least, that’s the current working title), which will focus on the tumultuous production of the film as well as the writing of the original novel by Peter Benchley. Laurent Bouzereau, who directed Faye (a documentary about Faye Dunaway) and wrote the book Spielberg: The First Ten Years, will be directing Jaws @ 50. Bouzereau is also in production on a documentary about composer John Williams.

Jaws @ 50 will include footage and photography from the Benchley and Spielberg archives, and will also look at how the blockbuster gave rise to a new generation of shark obsessives. The doc will be made in collaboration with ocean conservation and marine policy advocate Wendy Benchley, the wife of Peter.

Wendy Benchley and Laura A. Bowling are producing the documentary. Amblin’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey serve as executive producers with Nedland Media’s Bouzereau and Markus Keith, plus National Geographic’s Ted Duvall.

Frank and Falvey provided the following statement: “Jaws the novel by Peter Benchley and the film by Steven Spielberg, defined both popular literature and cinema. The idea of diving into the past, present and future legacy of Jaws, combined with an informed and inspiring discussion about sharks and the ocean in one documentary, is a unique opportunity to explore the perfect union between art and science.

When he was interviewed for Spielberg: The First Ten Years, Spielberg told Bouzereau, “Being on Jaws became a living nightmare, and not because I didn’t know what I was doing or because I was struggling to find the movie in my head. I knew the film I wanted to make. I just couldn’t get the movie I had in mind on film as quickly as I wanted. The end never seemed to be in sight, and yet I was the only person who could reassure the crew that there would be an end to this some day.

John Carpenter

More than thirty new stars are going to be added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2025 (and into 2026), with the new batch of honorees who will be receiving stars (in the categories of motion pictures, television, live theatre/live performance, radio, recording, and sports entertainment) having been chosen by the Hollywood Chamber’s Board of Directors. Variety reports that that honorees include Jessica Chastain, Bill Duke, Emilio Estevez, Colin Farrell, Jane Fonda, Nia Long, Lisa Lu, Glynn Turman, Toni Vaz, Fran Drescher, Lauren Graham, Bill Nye, Molly Shannon, Sherri Shepherd, Courtney B. Vance, Chris Wallace, Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Misty Copeland, Alan Cumming, Adam Carolla, Fantasia, Depeche Mode, Los Bukis, The B-52s, Green Day, The Isley Brothers, Busta Rhymes, George Strait, Keith Urban, WAR, Prince, David Beckham, and Orel Hershiser… but the two honorees that stand out more than any others on this list for us here in the Arrow in the Head horror section of JoBlo are character actor Robert Englund and legendary filmmaker John Carpenter!

Englund has racked up over 170 (and counting) acting credits over the course of a career that stretches back to the 1974 film Buster and Billie. He is, of course, best known for playing the role of dream-stalking murderer Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Not only did he play that character in eight feature films, from the original A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984 to the Friday the 13th crossover Freddy vs. Jason in 2003, but he also hosted 44 episodes of the anthology series Freddy’s Nightmares as Freddy, voiced the character on an episode of The Simpsons, and played Freddy again on an episode of the sitcom The Goldbergs.

John Carpenter directed the films Dark Star, Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, Someone’s Watching Me!, The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Christine, Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, Prince of Darkness, They Live, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, In the Mouth of Madness, Village of the Damned, Escape from L.A., Vampires, Ghosts of Mars, and The Ward, as well as the mini-series Elvis. He also contributed to the anthologies Body Bags and Masters of Horror. He wrote several of the films he directed, wrote some more that he didn’t direct (Eyes of Laura Mars, Zuma Beach, Better Late Than Never, Black Moon Rising, El Diablo, Blood River, Silent Predators), and composed the scores for many of his own films (plus the recent Halloween sequel trilogy).

Chairman Peter Roth had this to say about the new batch of Hollywood Walk of Fame star honorees: “The Walk of Fame has made history again! As Chairman of the Walk of Fame Selection Committee, I am thrilled to announce the distinguished honorees who will grace the iconic Walk of Fame in the Class of 2025. Each honoree truly embodies the essence of excellence in their respective fields. The committee and I cannot wait to see our honorees becoming part of this world-famous walkway!

Variety notes that honorees have up to two years after they are chosen to set a date for their ceremonies.

It’s great to hear that Robert Englund, John Carpenter, and several of the other honorees will have their names added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. What do you think of this year’s group of honorees? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender can recently be seen in the dark, moody, but also comedic David Fincher film The Killer on Netflix, as well as the very comedic, light-hearted sports film Next Goal Wins from Taika Waititi that is available on Hulu. He had also recently wrapped Black Bag, which was directed by Steven Soderbergh. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fassbender will be making the move to television as the star and executive producer of the espionage thriller The Agency, which will reside on Paramount+. The Agency was formerly titled The Department and is based on the French series Le Bureau des Legendes. The show has now started production.

The plot, according to THR, reads, “Fassbender will play a CIA agent who’s ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites. His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart, hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage.”

The Agency comes from Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios. The spy series had earned a straight-to-series order at Showtime back in February 2023. However, this was prior to the premium cable outlet getting effectively folded into Paramount+. The show has a multitude of big names behind it, with George Clooney and Grant Heslov joining Fassbender to executive produce the show. Additionally, Jez and John-Henry Butterworth are writing all 10 episodes, while Joe Wright will direct the first two installments.

Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global co-CEO and president/CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios, expressed his excitement over the upcoming limited series, “Michael Fassbender is one of the most gifted actors of our time. He brings a gravitas and nuanced complexity to every character he inhabits, which is why we are so excited for him to star in The Agency as we start to roll out our new slate of Showtime originals.”

Joining Clooney, Heslov and Fassbender as executive producers are Keith Cox and Nina L. Diaz of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios; David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin and Bob Yari of 101 Studios; Alex Berger for TOP-The Originals Productions; and Ashley Stern and Pascal Breton for Federation Studios/Federation Entertainment of America.
