Month: June 2024

Dwayne Johnson has taken to his social media in a fun way to tease the release of the trailer for Red One, as well as reveal the teaser poster. While Johnson heals from the injuries he sustains from his upcoming A24 film The Smashing Machine, he posts an all-points bulletin, or rather an all-points alert, that calls for the help of finding Santa Claus, played in the film by J.K. Simmons. Johnson then punctuates the message with a teaser poster and an announcement that the trailer will premiere online tomorrow. In the APB, Johnson points to those who may know of Santa’s whereabouts to call the number on the bottom of the poster.

Johnson’s message reads,
“!!MISSING: SANTA CLAUS [CODE NAME: RED ONE]!!

All points alert to everyone around the world— be on the lookout for this man.

Last seen at the North Pole. If you have any information, please reach out to the E.L.F. North Pole Command Center via the number on the bottom of this official RED ONE poster. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Christmas depends on it.

And Nick, buddy, if you’re reading this— I will find you.

~ Callum Drift, Commander of The E.L.F. REWARD: Our official @RedOneMov trailer drops in 24 hours!”

The press tour for the film will be a difficult one with a bombshell report looming over the production, which claimed that Johnson exhibited unprofessional behavior by chronically showing up late to set. “The only thing Dwayne was consistent at was being chronically late,” said one insider. The report states that Johnson was late on average of seven to eight hours per day and even missed several entire days. According to the insiders quoted in the report, this cost the production at least $50 million. “It was a f***ing disaster,” the insider said. “Dwayne truly doesn’t give a f***.” However, other sources say that Johnson was never more than an hour late to set and a spokesperson for Amazon MGM flat-out denied any issues.

Fall Virginia Gardner

Back in 2006, Wes Craven produced a killer dog movie called The Breed (watch it HERE), which was directed by Nicholas Mastandrea from a screenplay by Robert Conte and Peter Martin Wortmann and starred Michelle Rodriguez, Oliver Hudson, Taryn Manning, Eric Lively, Hill Harper, Nick Boraine, and Lisa-Marie Schneider. Now a remake (or an “unconventional reimagining,” as they’re calling it) of The Breed is in the works. When the project was first announced, it was said that Grace Caroline Currey of Fall is set to star in the film, and now Deadline reports that Currey’s Fall co-star Virginia Gardner has joined the cast!

In addition to Fall, Gardner’s credits include Halloween (2018), Starfish, Monster Party, Marvel’s Runaways, See You on Venus, All the Bright Places, Beautiful Disaster, and Beautiful Wedding.

Brothers Nathan and Griff Furst are directing The Breed remake, and are also producing it hrough their Curmudgeon Films shingle. The Fursts are no strangers to killer animal movies, as Griff’s previous directing credits include Trailer Park Shark, Ghost Shark, Swamp Shark, Lake Placid 3, Alligator Alley, and Arachnoquake. The brothers teamed up to direct the 2018 movie Nightmare Shark.

The Breed remake will follow an eclectic group on a mission to search for abandoned dogs on a remote island — an expedition that ends in terror. Currey’s character is Violet, “a rebel icon and badass on a mission to search for abandoned dogs on a remote island which leads to complete adrenaline-fueled terror.

Deadline didn’t share any details on Gardner’s character, but we do know that Page Kennedy – who had to deal with man-eating sharks in The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench – will be appearing in the film as Farmer John, “a country-rapper who provides comedic relief.

The 2006 film had the following synopsis: Two close brothers, Matt and John head to an exotic island for a week of fun and relaxation. Joined by Matt’s girlfriend Nicki, Sara, and a friend Noah, the group intend on having a week of relaxation, fun and spending quality time together. However, after one of them is viciously attacked by a dog, the friends decide to leave the island early – only to find their sea plane set adrift by the dogs. As the day goes on, the friends find themselves fighting for their lives against a vicious pack of mutated dogs who don’t intend on the group making it out alive off the island…

bringing out the dead 4k

Martin Scorsese’s one of those rare directors who’ve made so many masterpieces (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, etc) that all too many of his films wind up being underrated just because maybe they don’t quite set the world on fire when they first come out. One such film is Bringing Out the Dead, starring Nicolas Cage as a New York City paramedic on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Hyped as a kind of companion piece to Taxi Driver, with it being written by that film’s Paul Schrader, it was rather coolly received in ’99. Why? Well, let’s not forget that year is one of the strongest in recent memory, and it got a bit overshadowed by movies like Fight Club, Three Kings, Magnolia, The Matrix, Being John Malkovich and a whole bunch of others as far as the cultural zeitgeist went.

However, looking back at the movie twenty-five years later, it can’t be denied that Bringing Out the Dead is something of an unsung masterpiece. One thing it benefits from is that nobody is comparing it to Taxi Driver anymore, as this movie’s protagonist, while burnt out, is no psychopath, and his empathy for his patients is the thing that proves to be his undoing. Nicolas Cage delivers one of his most affecting performances ever, so it’s gratifying to see that Paramount Home Video is doing right by this catalogue title and giving it a 4K physical release packed with extras, with virtually the entire cast being involved.

Here’s what you’ll find on the disc:

freaky friday, jamie lee curtis, lindsay lohan

It’s time to get freaky again. Freaky Friday, based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name, was remade into a 1976 fantasy comedy starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster. Curtis and Lohan starred in a reboot of the story in 2003, revolving around Tess Coleman (Jamie Lee Curtis), a single mother, and her teenage daughter Anna (Lindsay Lohan), who accidentally swap bodies.

Fans of the original have been hearing about a sequel getting closer and closer to happening and Disney has just announced the start of production on Freaky Friday 2, which has not formally announced a new title as of yet.

Curtis and Lohan reprise their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman. Other returning cast members from the original film include Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. They are joined by Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. Get a look at the duo in the newly released behind-the-scenes picture from the set below as well as check out Disney’s official announcement video on Tiktok HERE.

Details of the production and plot read,
“The film is directed by Nisha Ganatra. The producers are Kristin Burr, Andrew Gunn, and Jamie Lee Curtis, with Nathan Kelly, Ann Marie Sanderlin, and Lindsay Lohan serving as executive producers. A sequel to the beloved 2003 film with a multigenerational twist, the film picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.”

The film will be released in theaters nationwide in 2025.

Hugh Grant

Last June, we learned that Hugh Grant – whose credits include Notting Hill, Love Actually, Wonka, and Unfrosted – had signed on to star in the A24 horror film Heretic, which is coming our way from the writing and directing duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Last month, A24 revealed their plan to give Heretic a wide theatrical release on November 15th. Now they have unveiled a poster for the film, while also promising that a trailer will be making its way online tomorrow. The poster can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Details are scarce, but the story has something to do with two missionaries that attempt to convert a dangerous man. Here’s how Deadline has describes it: Two young missionaries become ensnared in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse after they knock on the wrong front door.

There’s no word on who Grant plays in this scenario, but it would be very cool to see him take on the role of the dangerous man, and it seems likely that we’re going to. He has previously said that he finds villain roles to be “more fun” to play. He is joined in the cast of Heretic by Chloe East (The Fabelmans) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets), presumably as the missionaries.

Grant hasn’t done much horror in his career, but he did have a role in Ken Russell’s Bram Stoker-inspired supernatural horror comedy The Lair of the White Worm back in 1988.

Beck and Woods’ previous credits include A Quiet Place (they wrote the original script), Haunt (as writers/directors), Nightlight (writers/directors), Spread (writers/directors), the “Adam Driver vs. dinosaurs” movie 65 (writers/directors), and an episode of 50 States of Fright (writers/directors). They also (alongside Mark Heyman) received writing credits on the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman – which happened to star Sophie Thatcher, who turned in a great performance in a movie I thought was just okay overall.

Are you looking forward to seeing Hugh Grant, Chloe East, and Sophie Thatcher in the Beck/Woods/A24 horror film Heretic? Take a look at the poster, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

mad mad mad mad world

“You’ll see it! You’ll see it under this big W. You can’t miss it! A big, big, W!” And that’s just what Eddie Murphy is hoping to get with his planned remake of 1963 ensemble comedy classic It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. He has even started lining up the cast, dropping Martin Lawrence into the fold in the early stages.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Murphy said, “I got this other idea for something with Martin. I’ve been developing it for years. Did you ever see a movie It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? Well, I got a script, it will be delivered any minute now written by Jez Butterworth [Dial of Destiny, Ford v Ferrari] and I’m trying to do a remake of that movie.” He added, “It’s one of my favorite movies of all time and if I do it, if the script turns out right, it’s gonna be a cast of all the who’s who of comedians. Anybody that was funny over the last 30 years is going to be in this movie.”

Really, to ensure that a remake of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World works, the cast does have to be just right. Consider the original lineup: Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hacket, Ethel Merman, Phil Silvers, Jonathan Winters, and on and on and on without even mentioning the barrage of cameos. That Murphy is a fan of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and himself is a comedy legend, he should have no problem getting others on board.

There have been a number of spins on the story – a group of strangers trot the country to land hidden loot – but none have captured the sheer hilarity of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, which stands as one of my own personal favorites. The most notable attempt was 2001’s Rat Race, which pretty much lacked anybody funny outside of Jon Lovitz, Rowan Atkinson and John Cleese (who wasn’t part of the race itself). With Murphy in a bit of a resurgence, here’s hoping he can gather just the right cast and do something special with the story. If this remake actually gets made, it will be the first time Murphy and Lawrence worked together since 1999’s Life.

What do you think of the idea of another remake of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? Who would be essential to the cast this time around? For more Eddie, keep an eye out for our interview with him later this week!
