Alex Trebek

Alex Trebek, the late host of answer-and-question game show Jeopardy!, will be honored on a U.S. Forever stamp. And no, you won’t need to put anything in the form of a question when you go to buy it.

On an episode of Jeopardy! this week, host Ken Jennings – who officially took the sole hosting spot just last year after various temporary and co-hosts – announced that Alex Trebek would be receiving the honor, with pre-orders on the stamp already available. Trebek passed away in 2020 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

This Forever edition is one of the more clever pop culture designs of the first-class stamp to date, with text mimicking the show’s famous clue board and reading: “THIS NATURALIZED U.S. CITIZEN HOSTED THE QUIZ SHOW ‘JEOPARDY!’ FOR 37 SEASONS”. When you turn the stamp upside down, the stamp reveals the question and honoree: “Who is Alex Trebek?” At the top of each row are the following categories: Entertainment, Game Show Hosts, Famous Alexes, and Forever Stamps. You can see the complete design here.

Alex Trebek’s honor also coincides with Jeopardy!’s 60th anniversary, having launched in 1964 with Art Fleming serving as host until 1979. In 1984, Alex Trebek took over hosting duties in the syndicated version, leaving his mark as one of the longest-running game show hosts ever. For many, Trebek made trivia accessible through his encouragement of knowledge and curiosity. And who didn’t have their own “interesting fact” tucked away just in case they ever made it on the show?

An official event for Alex Trebek’s Forever stamp will be held on Monday, July 22nd – what would have been the legend’s 84th birthday – and feature Jennings and Trebek’s widow, Jean, in attendance.

Prior to Jeopardy!, Alex Trebek also hosted a number of Canadian game shows, The $128,000 Question and more. He would go on to make several appearances in movies and TV shows as himself, most notably 1992’s White Men Can’t Jump and in an all-time classic episode of Cheers.

Inside Out 2 continues dominating the box office in its second weekend, with Deadline reporting that the movie is looking at a $98 million weekend – some say it could even break $100 million. This would make it the highest grossing second weekend for an animated film of all time, after The Super Mario Bros Movie’s $92 million second weekend last year. Certainly, the animated sequel is shaping up to be one of Pixar’s biggest hits ever, which is quite the coup for a studio that everyone thought was on the downslide just a few months ago after a series of underperformers like Lightyear, Elemental, and more.

Meanwhile, Bad Boys: Ride or Die is holding on to second place with an $18 million-plus third weekend. The movie is turning out to be a major moneymaker for Sony, with it looking to end as the second-highest-grossing Bad Boys movie of all time, just below Bad Boys For Life’s $200 million-plus total.

As we predicted earlier this week, The Bikeriders is cruising into third place, with it looking at a weekend that will come in just below $10 million, which is a good result for Jeff Nichols’s really excellent, star-studded biker pic. Hopefully, this Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy flick will become a word-of-mouth hit, as we need more movies like this. Already, though, it’s shaping up to be their biggest opening weekend since My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 in September.

Lower on the chart is the Russell Crowe horror flick, The Exorcism, which is set to make around $2 million for a seventh-place finish. The movie’s been slapped with a truly terrifying D CinemaScore, likely because Vertical is selling it as a demonic possession movie when it’s actually a movie about addiction. Audiences hate that kind of bait-and-switch

What are you seeing this weekend? Let us know in the comments!

Billy Zane Phantom

The ghost who walks. The man who cannot die. That’s right – it’s Billy Zane! Well, The Phantom, but it sounds much cooler with Billy Zane directly attached. And he might not mind, either, considering it’s one of his favorite endeavors of his career.

Speaking with The A.V. Club, Billy Zane declared that Kit Walker aka The Phantom stands as “one of my favorite characters.” But the movie itself was a flop, with the June 7th, 1996 opening weekend finding it opening at #6, despite only one other title that week being a new release. As Zane remembered, “It got a lot of stick early on because it wasn’t edgy at a time when all those movies were going dark. I’ve always held a torch for what I saw as a dying genre, which was adventure. I was raised on adventure, and I think it’s so easily overlooked as how critical it is to young boys and girls.”

This action is what drew Billy Zane to The Phantom, saying, “I really understood the ethos of that, which is why I think I got the role. I just knew it and I was holding a torch for it… and it was a candle in the wind at the time, but then this thing came about, and I was, like, ‘A-ha! At last!’ It was something that would benefit from this weird adoration and fixation on all things Errol Flynn and Tarzan. A happy hero. Go figure! No issues. Well-adjusted. Animal friends. Man cave. Girlfriend. The family business. Life is good!”

Despite a pretty strong cast that also included Catherine Zeta-Jones (in her first major American role), Treat Williams and Kristy Swanson, The Phantom just didn’t click with audiences or critics, unable to land what Alec Baldwin and The Shadow had tried to do two years prior. This killed any hopes for a franchise, although discussions did pop up years later over a potential reboot. Even still, there is something to appreciate about The Phantom now. And while Billy Zane may never return to the character and has other endeavors going on – such as proving a spitting image of Marlon Brando – we can still dig The Phantom for what it is.

Are you a fan of The Phantom? Where would you rank it in a list of best Billy Zane performances? Drop your thoughts below – and remember, Slam Evil!

With the recent news that Tubi surpassed Max, Disney+ and Paramount+, it got me thinking about how far the service has come. It was mostly just seen as a joke but now it’s beating some of the heavy hitters. I’m not exactly shocked as even my grandparents have proclaimed their love for Tubi. The ease of access is always going to be the biggest winner for the average viewer. Plus the fact that it’s FREE doesn’t hurt either. At a time where other streaming services are adding ads of their own and increasing their paid tiers to absurd prices, services like Tubi become more and more appealing.

Tubi has come a long way since its days of direct-to-streaming shlock. Sure, there are classics like Child’s Play, Interview with the Vampire, Pumpkinhead, The Descent and Near Dark. But what about some titles that are more off the beaten path? Something to either discover for the first time or to be reminded of its greatness after a long time away from it. Plus, I’ll throw in some fun bonus ones as well since there’s such a wealth of content on the free service.

Mirrors

There will actually be a new video on this film soon on the JoBlo Horror Originals Youtube page.

Pandorum

This one has been having a bit of resurgence as it keeps appearing on various TikToks and YouTube Shorts about underseen horror titles. We’ve sure done our part on the JoBlo Horror side and will add this to this list.

Train to Busan

This better be one of those that spurs a bunch of comments going “Hey, that’s not a hidden gem.” But you just never know so I’m making sure to include it since it’s such an impactful film. Great performances and a Fury Road-like momentum of action throughout its runtime, this is one that has to be experienced. And yes, for you subtitle haters, there is a dubbed version available. But why would you ever want to do that to yourself?

Jonathan Majors

Jonathan Majors broke down in tears while accepting the Perseverance Award at the Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards on Friday, telling the audience that he at times felt scared but he found strength to press through even as he was accused – and found guilty – of assault and harassment last year.

Appearing at the annual event, Jonathan Majors’s stated, in part, “I didn’t feel like Jonathan Majors, Mr. Creed, Mr. Kang; I felt like a little scared, weak boy, despite the support and evidence that was in my favor, I knew shit was bad. And it was bad because of who I was and what I am. This is what happens to Black people all too often.” He added, “I am just a man, an imperfect man who loves his craft, and whose faith has been tested and then strengthened by his testimony. There will be moments in your life where things get dark, really dark…and I’ve seen the depths of that darkness in myself. Sitting in pitch black darkness, I’ve learned that when you catch a glimpse of light, you run hard towards it and never take it for granted again.”

Jonathan Majors was found guilty late last year, with a sentencing finding him avoiding jail but still undergoing probation and a 52-week domestic violence intervention program. Even still, Jonathan Majors may continue to find work, recently landing Martin Villeneuve’s Merciless. This is a far cry from his days in the MCU, the Creed franchise and being a Sundance sensation with Magazine Dreams (whose intended release was canceled due to the ongoing case), but there is still a pocket of support for the actor. He even name-dropped a number of celebrities who reached out in his speech, including Will Smith, Whoopi Goldberg, David Oyelowo, and Courtney B. Vance.

The Perseverance Award is given to “an individual who has shown that no matter what adversity they face, they will continue to aspire to inspire.” On this, Jonathan Majors began to conclude his speech by saying, “I receive this award not just as an acknowledgment that I have persevered, but as a command to be there for others and help them when and if their trials come.”

Now that he has been cast in another movie and is receiving industry recognition, where do you see Jonathan Majors going from here? Can he have a substantial rebound or is he down for the count?

Some cliche somewhere said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This has proven to be the case for me and especially when it comes to fan art. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. Superman, set photos, David Corenswet

James Gunn’s Superman movie is currently shooting in Cleveland and we’ve got a new look at David Corenswet suited up as the Man of Steel in some set photos courtesy of Brian Lumley.

As you can see, these Superman set photos don’t actually show Corenswet on set, but it does reveal new looks at his character thanks to the front pages of the Daily Planet and the Metropolis Eagle newspapers. You’ll have to open these photos and zoom in a bit, but they show Superman stopping a speeding train and posing heroically after saving people from a collapsing building. I feel like either of these photos could have made a better official first look than the one we got.

Superman stars David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as Perry White; Neva Howell (Logan Lucky) as Martha Kent; Pruitt Taylor-Vince (The Walking Dead) as Jonathan Kent; and Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor.

The members of the Daily Planet newsroom have also expanded for the movie, with Beck Bennet (Saturday Night Live) set to play Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover (The Suicide Squad) as Cat Grant, and newcomer Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has previously teased that Superman will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

Bad Boys 5

Bad Boys: Ride or Die has proven to be a big hit for Sony Pictures, with its current worldwide gross sitting at $227 million and growing. It also pushed the Bad Boys franchise over the $1 billion box-office mark. I’d imagine this is good news for a potential Bad Boys 5, and although nothing is official, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah do have a few ideas.

While speaking with Variety, the pair said they’d like to make Bad Boys 5 a more “international” story. “We’re going to first see what this is going to do,” Fallah said. “But what we want [is] to go around the world with them.

El Arbi added, “In every country we were imagining, how would Mike and Marcus be in France, or how would they be in the U.K., or how would they be in Dubai, or in Morocco, or in Africa, or in Asia? There’s a lot of interesting comedy that you could do with them. We’ve gotta push it to the next level in terms of action.” The directors added that they hadn’t heard anything about a potential sequel from Sony other than Tom Rothman emailing congratulations on the success of Ride or Die. If they do return to direct Bad Boys 5, they will have directed more installments of the franchise than Michael Bay.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die finds Lowrey and Burnett investigating corruption with the Miami PD. However, they’re turned into fugitives after being set up, forcing them to work outside the law to crack the case. In addition to Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the sequel features the return of a number of actors from previous movies, including Jacob Scipio, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Núñez, and Joe Pantoliano as Captain Conrad Howard. New additions to the cast include Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, and Rhea Seehorn. Tasha Smith plays Marcus Burnett’s wife, replacing Theresa Randle, who played the character in the first three movies in the franchise.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is still playing in theaters, but you can check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray right here.
