Coraline

Fifteen years ago, writer/director Henry Selick brought the world a stop-motion animated adaptation of the Neil Gaiman novella Coraline – and now, Variety confirmed, he’s planning to make another Gaiman-inspired movie. This time, Selick will be bringing the story of Gaiman’s novel The Ocean at the End of the Lane, which Selick considers to be the author’s crowning achievement, to the screen. Hanna director Joe Wright was attached to direct a live-action adaptation of the novel back in 2013, but that never made it into production.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane has the following description: A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn’t thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she’d claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy. A groundbreaking work as delicate as a butterfly’s wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is told with a rare understanding of all that makes us human, and shows the power of stories to reveal and shelter us from the darkness inside and out.

Selick told Variety that he sees The Ocean at the End of the Lane as a sort of companion piece to Coraline and “almost a sequel” because, “Instead of a child going to this other world with a monstrous mother, it’s a monstrous mother who comes into our world to wreak havoc on a kid’s life.

Selick has written a 35-page treatment for the film and has a bunch of artwork and concept designs at the ready, and he’s using these things to shop the project around.

More than a decade ago, Selick was working on a project called The Shadow King for Pixar and The Walt Disney Company. Although Disney cancelled the project in 2012 after putting $50 million into it, Selick got the rights to The Shadow King back in 2022 and Variety mentions that he is now planning to resurrect the story as a graphic novel – which he hopes to use as a proof-of-concept for a film that he would still like to see be made.

In addition to Coraline, Selick’s other directing credits include The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, Monkeybone, and Wendell & Wild.

Chucky season 3

Chucky season 3 aired its finale at the start of May, and while we still don’t know whether or not there’s going to be a Chucky season 4 (even though series creator Don Mancini has already pitched the idea to the network and Chucky himself requested viewer support), we do know when Chucky season 3 is going to be available to own on Blu-ray. The Blu-ray release date is August 13th, and copies are available for pre-order on Amazon! Deleted scenes are the only special feature.

A follow-up to all of the Child’s Play movies (remake excluded), Chucky picks up where Cult of Chucky left off. Don Mancini, who has written every film in the franchise (except that remake) and directed a few of them, developed Chucky with producer David Kirschner. Mancini and Kirschner are executive producing Chucky with Harley Peyton, Alex Hedlund, and Nick Antosca. The first season had Chucky terrorizing Hackensack, New Jersey, then he was sent off to a Catholic boarding school for season 2. Now it’s D.C.’s turn to experience some Chucky trouble.

Here’s the season 3 synopsis: In Chucky’s unending thirst for power, season 3 now sees Chucky ensconced with the most powerful family in the world — America’s First Family, inside the infamous walls of the White House. How did Chucky wind up here? What in God’s name does he want? And how can Jake, Devon, and Lexy possibly get to Chucky inside the world’s most secure house, all while balancing the pressures of romantic relationships and growing up? Meanwhile, Tiffany faces a looming crisis of her own as the police close in on her for “Jennifer Tilly’s” murderous rampage last season.

The series stars Jennifer Tilly (as serial killer Tiffany Valentine, now inhabiting the body of actress Jennifer Tilly), Zackary Arthur (as Jake Wheeler), Alyvia Alyn Lind (as Lexy Cross), Fiona Dourif (as Nica Pierce), Björgvin Arnarson (as Devon Evans), Devon Sawa (as President James Collins), Alex Vincent (as Andy Barclay), Christine Elise (as Kyle), Jackson Kelly (as Grant Collins), Lara Jean Chorostecki (as Charlotte Collins), Carina Battrick (as Caroline Cross), and Brad Dourif (providing the voice of Chucky). Legendary filmmaker John Waters, who previously played Pete Peters, a tabloid photographer who got dissolved by acid in 2004’s Seed of Chucky, also shows up as Wendell Wilkins, “the reclusive creator of the Good Guy dolls, who gets drawn into the psychopathic Chucky’s tangled web”.

Beverly Hills Cop 5, Eddie Murphy

The latest installment of Eddie Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop franchise, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, doesn’t come to Netflix until July 3. Still, Murphy is already discussing the possibility of a Beverly Hills Cop 5. Speaking with Today about Axel Foley’s return to screens, Murphy said he’s not opposed to playing the character again if the story is there.

When asked about playing the wise-cracking, case-solving Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop 5, Eddie Murphy said, “I hope so because this movie turned out so good, especially if you grew up watching the movie, then you’ll really, really love this new picture.”

Speaking about Axel Foley’s appeal, Murphy says the trick to his lasting popularity is that he has something for everyone to relate to. “Axel is the everyman. He’s not a superhero or super cop. He’s the everyman that rises to the occasion. I think that’s why people like him. And, more than anything, he’s funny.”

Mark Molloy directs Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F from a story by Will Beall. Beall co-wrote the screenplay with Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, based on characters created by Danilo Bach and Daniel Petrie Jr. In Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is back on the beat in Beverly Hills. After his daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige) and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.

Beverly Hills Cop alums Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot return to help Axel raise hell in Beverly Hills, with Kevin Bacon bringing heat as the film’s villain. So far, Ronny Cox is sitting this one out. Despite being eighty-four, Cox is still active, recently appearing in Aaron Sorkin’s Being the Ricardos. He also contributed a vocal performance to the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy.

I’ll need to see Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F before I can say the world needs a Beverly Hills Cop 5. Still, if Murphy is this excited about the upcoming sequel and is willing to make another, that’s a promising prospect.

furiosa, tinted black and chrome

Yesterday, we shared the news that the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga – director George Miller’s latest and (given the disappointing box office numbers) possibly final entry in the Mad Max franchise – will be receiving a VOD release on June 25th. Now we have good news for the physical media collectors out there: Furiosa will be reaching 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on August 13th! Copies are available for pre-order at THIS LINK.

Directed by Miller from a screenplay he wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa has the following synopsis: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by the Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home. The story takes place over a span of fifteen years.

Title character Furiosa is played by Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), taking over from Fury Road‘s Charlize Theron. Lachy Hulme (Offspring) pulls double duty, playing both Fury Road villain Immortan Joe (taking over from the late Hugh Keays-Byrne) and a character called Rizzdale Pell, who is “one of the gang members affiliated with the warlord Dementus.” Dementus is a pretty horrible individual, and he’s played by Chris Hemsworth (Thor). Also in the cast are Tom Burke (C.B. Strike) and Quaden Bayles (Three Thousand Years of Longing), with Alyla Browne (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart) as a younger Furiosa. Nathan Jones and Angus Sampson reprise their Fury Road roles of Rictus Erectus and The Organic Mechanic.

Furiosa comes to 4K UHD with the following special features: Highway to Valhalla: In Pursuit of Furiosa – Stowaway to Nowhere – Metal Beasts & Holy Motors – Darkest Angel: Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa – Motorbike Messiah: Chris Hemsworth as Dementus. The regular Blu-ray will only contain the Highway to Valhalla: In Pursuit of Furiosa and Stowaway to Nowhere special features.

Miller confirmed earlier this year that Furiosa will, like Mad Max: Fury Road, be getting a black & white (or black & chrome) release on home video. The folks at Coming Soon were able to find out that a Furiosa Black & Chrome Edition will be available sometime “later this year” and will include an introduction by Miller.

Will you be picking up a copy of Furiosa on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and/or DVD in August, or will you be waiting for the Black & Chrome Edition? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Inside Out 3, Jon Hamm, Paul Walter Hauser, Pixar

Everyone is getting emotional about Pixar‘s Inside Out 2 and its outstanding box office performance. Shining bright with $334M+ worldwide after one weekend in cinemas, fans of Pixar’s latest trip into Riley Andersen’s mind are already wondering when we’ll get another film in the series. While Pixar has not mentioned Inside Out 3, that’s not keeping Paul Walter Hauser, who voices Embarrassment in the movie, from sharing who he thinks should play a new emotion in a sequel. According to Hauser, Jon Hamm should join the cast of Inside Out 3 as the voice of Competition.

“I wanted Jon Hamm to voice Competition or a competitive nature.” Hauser said while speaking with CinemaBlend about Pixar’s latest smash hit. “That dude [Hamm] is a real player. He can be thrown into anything.”

Sitting next to Hauser during the interview is Lewis Black, who reprises his role as Anger in Inside Out 2. According to Black, Hauser has all the ideas. If Black had his way, he’d eliminate most cast members in favor of a more significant paycheck.

Several emotions almost made it into Inside Out 2, including Guilt, Jealousy, and Schadenfreude. If Pixar decides to make Inside Out 3, could Jon Hamm join the cast? It’s entirely possible. Hamm is an actor who wears many hats, and I see him channeling a competitive nature to bring a new aspect to Riley’s evolving personality.

When I visited the studio earlier this year, I asked Pixar about their chances of making Inside Out 3. While they remained tight-lipped, they did like my suggestion of continuing to follow Riley throughout various life stages. Inside Out 3 could follow Riley into high school or college, while Inside Out 4 could see her become a parent. The fourth film in the series would split the narrative, bouncing between a 30-something Riley and her child. You can have that one for free, Pixar. You’re welcome.

Who would you cast in Inside Out 3? Do you think Pixar will revisit the series after the monumental success of Inside Out 2? Which emotions would you add to the mix? Let us know in the comments below.

Nobody Bob Odenkirk

A few months ago, producers David Leitch and Kelly McCormick confirmed that Universal is really invested in building the films Nobody and Violent Night out into franchises – so Nobody 2 and Violent Night 2 are both heading toward production. It was even suggested that Nobody 2 could start filming by the end of the year… and now the folks at Collider have learned that, if everything works out with the scheduling, the production start date could be just two months away! They hear that Nobody 2 is currently expected to start filming in August and wrap in October.

McCormick previously told Collider, “We are planning on returns to those universes. Hopefully, honestly, even potentially end of this year for Nobody 2 and, beginning of next year for Violent Night 2, if we can find time in everybody’s busy schedules. But the development’s going super well and everybody’s really, really excited about moving those worlds forward. … (Scripts are) being written. We’re well into a couple of drafts and things are going super well, but there’s still a little work to do.

Directed by Ilya Naishuller from a screenplay by Derek Kolstad, Nobody starred Bob Odenkirk as as Hutch Mansell, an unassuming family man who cowers and folds during a home invasion. His post-traumatic shame disorder reignites a long-cooled fire within, and he summons a secret lethal skill set for a revenge mission, only to see it backfire spectacularly and put his family in greater jeopardy.

Odenkirk was joined in the cast by Connie Nielsen, Aleksey Serebryakov, RZA, and Christopher Lloyd.

There’s no word on what the story of Nobody 2 might be, but Collider has heard that Odenkirk and Nielsen are both officially on board to reprise their roles from the first film. Which is an important step, as you couldn’t (or definitely shouldn’t) have a Nobody sequel without Odenkirk in the lead as Hutch. Kolstad has returned to write the script for the sequel.

Are you a fan of Nobody, and are you glad to hear that Nobody 2 is expected to start filming very soon? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

It’s crazy to think that Joshua John Miller’s The Exorcism was first announced back in 2019. The world has changed a lot since then and we’ve even gotten a similarly titled Russell Crowe movie in the meantime. Yet the only thing that The Exorcism shares with The Pope’s Exorcist (outside of its lead) is the subject matter. Because otherwise, this is a very different film, both in tone and plot. Following a film within a film about the remake of The Exorcist (although not by name) provides a unique opportunity. Many possession stories can feel rather “samey” so it’s nice to finally get a unique slant on it.

I was fortunate enough to sit down with stars Ryan Simpkins, David Hyde Pierce, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg, as well as writers and director M.A.Fortin and Joshua John Miller. We got into all things The Exorcism, including the very intense process of writing the script. Drawing from inspiration from his own childhood, Miller pulled from his own relationship with his father (The Exorcist‘s Jason Miller) so there are some intense emotions present here. And for a bit of fun, I talked to some of the cast about their favorite horror movies.

The Exorcism plot:

Shot as a movie within a movie, The Exorcism stars Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe as Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who is trying to resuscitate his career when he lands the lead role of a priest in a supernatural horror film about an exorcism. As unsettling events unfold, his “lucky break” takes a dark turn. The director (Adam Goldberg), aiming for authenticity, subjects the struggling actor to humiliating treatment, forcing him to confront past traumas and accelerating his decline. Witnessing his suffering, Anthony’s estranged daughter (Ryan Simpkins) turns to the film’s priest advisor (David Hyde Pierce) for help. Has the pressure of making the film sent Anthony back to his old addictions, or has it opened a portal to something more sinister?

THE EXORCISM IS PLAYING ONLY IN THEATERS ON JUNE 21ST, 2024.

Christmas Bloody Christmas Riley Dandy

Writer/actress Cassie Keet recently made her feature directorial debut with the horror comedy Scream Therapy, which just received a VOD release from Indican Pictures yesterday and earned her a Panavision camera grant. That grant has allowed her to go into her second feature, a slow-burn psychological cult thriller called Abigail Before Beatrice, which is now filming in Little Rock, Arkansas with Olivia Taylor Dudley (The Magicians) and Riley Dandy (Christmas Bloody Christmas) in the lead roles.

Written and directed by Keet, Abigail Before Beatrice is coming our way from Little Black Dog Entertainment, Nanu Pictures, and Exit 44 Entertainment. Benjamin Dunn and Mindy Van Kuren are producing the film, which is partly financed by New Harvest Creative. The story centers on an isolated woman who must confront her past when a fellow former cult member reaches out with news that their leader has been released from prison early.

Keet told Deadline, “I’m so excited and humbled to be filming in my home state. I had dreamt of filming Abigail Before Beatrice in Arkansas from the moment I wrote it, but the ACS Panavision grant made that dream a reality. I love working with our local crew, and I’m so touched by how many people have gone out of their way to donate and discount everything from food to locations to our project. It is my sincere wish that this movie will continue to shine a positive light on the ever-growing film community in Arkansas.

While we wait to see how Abigail Before Beatrice turns out, Scream Therapy is available to watch on Amazon. You can rent it for $4.99 or purchase for $14.99. The movie has the following synopsis: A cathartic girls trip to the desert turns deadly when demon-worshipping incels discover their secluded house and decide to make these girls their sacrifice. Rochelle Anderson, Skyler Bible, Kevin Bone, Harley Bronwyn, Mandie Cheung, Ben Cichowski, Geri Courtney-Austein, Claire Dellamar, Brian Flaccus, Tyler Hansen, Shayn Herndon, and Grey Hill star, with Keet appearing as a character called Acid Knife.
