Marvel Animation has had a smash hit on its hands this year with X-Men ’97 and the fans are ready for more. While Disney+ has already explored alternate timelines in animation form in the MCU with the What if? series, an upcoming show about Spider-Man is aiming to do something similar, but different. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which was formally known as Spider-Man: Freshman Year, isn’t set within the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, but in an alternative universe where Norman Osborn is Peter Parker’s mentor.

It was also revealed that Charlie Cox will be reprising his role as Matt Murdock for this series. According to ScreenRant, Cox talked a little bit about his experience recording for Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man at Fan Expo Boston 2024. ComicBook.com reported that the Daredevil: Born Again star explained,

I went into the studio and did some voiceover for that a long time ago. Years ago, during when I was shooting She-Hulk, so I think that was 2021. I’ve just seen a couple of scenes that I’ve voiced. And I haven’t even seen the scenes, I just saw the early drawings of it. That’s all I know. I haven’t seen any of it, I have no idea what the story is, but it’s cool. It’s cool that [Daredevil’s] in it. I’m excited about it.”

Hudson Thames is providing the voice of Peter Parker / Spider-Man and is joined in the cast by Cox as Daredevil, Paul F. Tompkins as Bentley Wittman, Eugene Byrd as Lonnie Lincoln, Grace Song as Nico Minoru, Hugh Dancy as Doctor Octopus, Kari Wahlgren as Aunt May, and Zeno Robinson as Harry Osborn. The show will see Spider-Man face off with villains like Unicorn, Chameleon, Scorpion, Speed Demon, Tarantula, the Rhino, Butane, Carmela Black, and Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus.

Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, explained how the show fits into the overall MCU, “Well, like we said, in the panel, it follows the pattern that you see in [Captain America:Civil War. Down to Peter getting the broken Blu-ray player from the trash and he walks into his department for the famous moment where Tony stark is waiting for him to offer him the stark internship and take him to Berlin. But because of things that happen in the multiverse because of new, random occurrences, it’s not Tony Stark who’s waiting for him there. It’s Norman Osborn and that sends his life in an unexpected trajectory that collides him with many unexpected characters in the Marvel universe.”

Full Metal Jacket

If you were looking to rent or buy Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket on Amazon Prime, you might find yourself wondering if Private Joker was truly “BORN TO KILL” after all, as his helmet sarcastically says. That’s because the streamer has pulled a move that will make you angrier than R. Lee Ermey: they have removed that slogan from the promotional art.

This alteration caught the attention of Matthew Modine himself, who played J.T. “Joker” Davis in Full Metal Jacket. Taking to social media, the actor wrote: “Who decided to remove “BORN TO KILL?” Not only did they alter a piece of iconic art by Philip Castle, but they completely misunderstood the point of it being there. Pvt. Joker wears the helmet with “BORN TO KILL” and the peace button as a statement about “the duality of man.””

While the smaller icon (which you would click to be taken to the purchase page) does feature the “BORN TO KILL” mark, when you get to the next page it has suspiciously been scrubbed. However, the peace symbol does remain. Now, ironically enough, life has been taken out of the poster, with Amazon defacing the art by removing most of what makes it so powerful.

Initially it was unclear why Amazon would do this for the Full Metal Jacket art – it wasn’t as if Amazon is plucking a different design, as no international posters for Full Metal Jacket removed the text. This, really, committed a form of censorship against the art that diminishes the nature of the movie. But there might be a reason for it. According to one user who responded to Modine, Amazon has a rule where no text is allowed on the banner image in an attempt to keep critic blurbs from being plastered over the poster. If that’s truly the case, then make it a rule where any text outside of the original poster art is prohibited. As it stands, this is absolutely a case of Amazon needlessly and recklessly censoring one of the most iconic posters ever.

On the Full Metal Jacket design, early sketches indicate that the great Philip Castle – who also did A Clockwork Orange for Kubrick, always intended “BORN TO KILL” to be on the helmet, even if he was given more or less a blank canvas from the director. “[Stanley Kubrick] sent me a little drawing, a silhouette, and, on one of my visits, he handed the helmet over and I just brought it back. I did the helmet as though it had just been left on a desk, flat; I don’t know who had the idea but, just tilting it, as if it were being worn, made a whole difference — it put life into it.”

What do you think of Amazon Prime Video’s apparent rule against text? Do you consider this a form of censorship?

Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Blue Moon, Richard Linklater movie

Deadline reports that Ethan Hawke is set to reunite with Richard Linklater once again for Blue Moon, a drama which dives into the final days of Lorenz Hart, one half of the songwriting team Rodgers & Hart.

In addition to Hawke, Blue Moon will also feature Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Bobby Cannavale (Ezra), and Andrew Scott (Ripley). Production will kick off in Dublin, Ireland this summer. Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the worldwide rights for the project, which has been scripted by Robert Kaplow. The film will be set “primarily in Sardi’s Restaurant on March 31, 1943, the opening night of Oklahoma!, which marked Rodgers’s first collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II as Hart’s replacement.

Robert, Ethan and I have been developing this story for over a decade and are excited and grateful that the time has come to bring this to life,” Linklater said in a statement. A spokesperson for Sony Pictures Classics added: “Almost a year ago, Rick, Ethan and John reached out to us with Robert Kaplow’s amazing script Blue Moon. Helping them over the following months to bring it together has been incredibly exciting and now, on the verge of production, with this fantastic cast and crew in place and Rick at the helm, we are thrilled to finally announce it and bring the film to audiences everywhere in the world.” In addition to directing Blue Moon, Linklater will also produce alongside Mike Blizzard and John Sloss.

Blue Moon will mark the ninth collaboration between Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke. Starting with Before Sunrise, the pair worked together on The Newton Boys, Waking Life, Tape, Before Sunset, Fast Food Nation, Before Midnight, and Boyhood. Linklater’s most recent film was the critically-praised Hit Man, which stars Glen Powell as a strait-laced professor who discovers his hidden talent as a fake hitman. He meets his match in a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities. The film is now streaming on Netflix and you can check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray right here.

Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, RIP, Joe Carnahan

Deadline reports that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are set to team up once again for RIP, a crime thriller written and directed by Joe Carnahan.

Damon and Affleck’s production company, Artists Equity, will produce the project, which is expected to start shooting this fall. Plot details are being kept under wraps at the moment, but there’s been plenty of interest from potential buyers, both theatrical and streaming. You might recall that the pair were planning to star in another crime thriller earlier this year. Affleck was set to direct Animals from a script written by Connor McIntyre and would also appear alongside Damon, but Deadline’s report states that scheduling with The Accountant sequel couldn’t be worked out, so the project was put on pause.

After writing and starring in Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck appeared in a number of movies together, largely Kevin Smith productions such as Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. The pair also co-wrote the script for Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel alongside Nicole Holofcener, and that experience made Damon realize they needed to prioritize working together again. “I remember my wife said to me one day: ‘I haven’t heard you laugh like that in 15 years,’” Damon said. “We came out of that experience going: Why aren’t we doing this more often? And getting into your 50s you just go: If we don’t make it a priority, it’s just not going to happen.” They quickly reunited for Air, the Michael Jordan/Nike movie which Affleck also directed.

It’s always fun to see Affleck and Damon together, and Joe Carnahan certainly knows his way around a thriller. Although we don’t know anything about RIP at this time, the talent attached makes it easy to get excited.

The Exorcist, Mike Flanagan, 2026 release date

Mike Flanagan will shepherd the next installment of The Exorcist franchise, which has been given a release date of March 13, 2026 by Universal.

The last installment of the franchise, The Exorcist: Believer, was intended to be the first of a new trilogy (The Exorcist: Deceiver had even been given a 2025 release date), but the lacklustre box office and scathing reviews forced the studio to rethink its plans. Enter Mike Flanagan. The Haunting of Hill House director is set to write, direct, and produce what is being described as a “radical new take” on the franchise. While it will still be set in the Exorcist universe, the project will not be a sequel to The Exorcist: Believer.

The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold and terrifying within its universe,” Flanagan said in a statement. “Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.

Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, added, “Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans, and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it.

It’s an honor to be working with Mike. I think his vision for this franchise is going to stun audiences worldwide, and I could not be more excited to be working with him, Trevor, Jason and the entire Blumhouse Team,” said David Robinson, Chairman and CEO of Morgan Creek, which has the rights to the franchise.

Our own Chris Bumbray called the recent sequel an abysmal, dull attempt to relaunch the franchise. “It’s supposed to be the first entry in a new trilogy of Exorcist films, but the movie is so abysmal one shouldn’t hold out too much hope for a follow-up,” Bumbray wrote. “While it may have a strong box-office opening, word of mouth seems sure to be dire. The only thing that saves Exorcist: Believer from being called the worst Exorcist movie ever is the fact that this particular series has some very bad entries.” You can check out the rest of Bumbray’s review right here.

Spaceballs 2, Josh Gad

At long last, Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money might finally become a reality. According to Jeff Sneider, Josh Gad is set to star in a Spaceballs sequel directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) for Amazon MGM Studios. Gad also co-wrote the script with Benji Samit (Detective Pikachu) and Dan Hernandez (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem) and will produce the project alongside Mel Brooks.

Plot details for Spaceballs 2 are being kept under wraps at this time, but the original 1987 movie starred Bill Pullman as Lone Star, John Candy as Barg, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, Rick Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet, and Mel Brooks as President Skroob and Yogurt. Although the film was primarily a parody of Star Wars, it also included some humourous nods to Alien and Star Trek.

More to come…
