Month: June 2024

Earlier this month, we heard that one of the movies that will be showing at the 28th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival (which is set to run from from July 18th through August 4th in Montreal) is the werewolf chiller The Beast Within, starring Kit Harington (Jon Snow from HBO’s Game of Thrones). But if you’re not going to be able to attend Fantasia this year, you’re still going to have the chance to see The Beast Within on the big screen this summer… if you’re in the United States, anyway. Well Go USA Entertainment is giving the film a theatrical release nationwide on July 26th, and you can check out the trailer in the embed above.

Said to be a nightmarish fantasy film that’s “phantasmagoric, gothic, and straight out of Grimm’s Fairy Tales,” The Beast Within has the following synopsis: After a series of strange events leads her to question her family’s isolated life on a fortified compound deep in the English wilds, 10-year-old Willow follows her parents on one of their secret late-night treks to the heart of the ancient forest. But upon witnessing her father undergo a terrible transformation, she too becomes ensnared by the dark ancestral secret they’ve tried so desperately to conceal.

Harington is joined in the cast by Ashleigh Cummings, James Cosmo, and Caoilinn Springall. The film marks the narrative feature debut of documentary filmmaker Alexander J. Farrel, who also wrote the screenplay with Greer Taylor Ellison.

The Beast Within was produced by Merlin Merton, Martin Owen, Ryan Hamilton, Karl Hall, Sebastian Street, Alex Chang, Jack Christian, Evan Ross, Jordan Wagner, and Ying Ye.

The Beast Within is a commonly used title, so it’s kind of disappointing that it has been slapped on this film – although the original title, What Remains of Us, wasn’t anything special, either. The most famous movie to use the title The Beast Within to date was the 1982 “were-cicada” flick that was directed by Philippe Mora from a screenplay by Tom Holland. We heard some years back that Holland was interested in getting a remake off the ground – but while we wait to see if there’s ever going to be more were-cicada action on our screens, this Kit Harington movie looks like it could be good.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, production starts

HBO has confirmed that production has now commenced on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the latest Game of Thrones spin-off. A first-look image was also released, which you can see above.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is shooting in Belfast, Ireland with five new actors joining the cast, including Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country) as Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Cavel (The Crown) as Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things) as Tanselle, Daniel Ings (Sex Education) as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell (Small Axe: Mangrove) as Maekar Targaryen.

The official logline for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.” Peter Claffey (Vikings: Valhalla) and Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) are set to star in the series as Dunk and Egg.

Owen Harris, who directed the San Junipero episode of Black Mirror, will helm three of the six episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with Sarah Adina Smith (Lessons in Chemistry) directing the remaining three episodes. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is written and executive produced by George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker, with Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw also executive producing. The series is based on three novellas published by Martin — The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010). All three stories were then collected and published together as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2015.

Martin has previously teased that the new series will have a much different tone than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. “The Hedge Knight will be a lot shorter than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, with a much different tone… but it’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe,” Martin wrote in his blog. “I hope to visit the shoot come July, when I swing by Belfast on my way to the worldcon in Glasgow. The show will make its debut next year… and if it does well, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight will follow.  By which time I hope to have finished some more Dunk & Egg stories (yes, after I finish The Winds of Winter).

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to launch in late 2025, but if you’re hungry for more from the realm of Westeros, the second season of House of the Dragon recently premiered, and you can check out a review from our own Alex Maidy right here.

Netflix House, shopping, venue, entertainment, announcement

Who needs money, right? Why pay off your credit cards or student loans when you can sacrifice what’s left of your bank account to the Netflix gods? In a bold move, Netflix is proud to announce Netflix House, two permanent experimental entertainment venues! The first two locations will open in 2025 in Dallas, Texas, and Prussia, Pennsylvania. Malls are back, baby! Where’s Robin Sparkles when you need her?

The Netflix House project hopes to become a one-stop-shop for Netflix subscribers to interact with many of their favorite Netflix properties in new and exciting ways. While at a Netflix House, patrons can enjoy shopping outlets, eateries, and experiential activities inspired by previous Netflix live events for Bridgerton, Money Heist, Stranger Things, Squid Game, and Netflix Bites, the stream giant’s culinary department.

“At Netflix House, you can enjoy regularly updated immersive experiences, indulge in retail therapy, and get a taste — literally — of your favorite Netflix series and films through unique food and drink offerings,” says Marian Lee, Netflix’s Chief Marketing Officer. “We’ve launched more than 50 experiences in 25 cities, and Netflix House represents the next generation of our distinctive offerings. The venues will bring our beloved stories to life in new, ever-changing, and unexpected ways.”

In its Netflix House initiative, Netflix is taking a “go big or go home” approach to the first two locations. The first two locations occupy the former Galleria Dallas and King of Prussia Mall, each providing more than 100,000 square feet of entertainment space. Execution of the Netflix House continues beyond the mall doors. Outdoor events and decor also bring Netflix fans closer to their favorite characters and original Netflix content.

Want to eat at the Delicious in Dungeon eatery? How about a game of Baby Reindeer Hide-and-Seek? Want to dress fancy like characters in Brigderton or purchase a bottle of Sweet Tooth syrup? Events like this could happen at a Netflix House because the sky’s the limit with a concept like this.

“Imagine waltzing with your partner to an orchestral cover of a Taylor Swift song on a replica of the Bridgerton set –– and then walking around the corner to compete in the Glass Bridge challenge from Squid Game,” the company said. Visitors then can chow down at a nearby restaurant “inspired by Netflix shows from around the world,” then head to shop where you can buy that Stranger Things’ Hellfire Club T-shirt you’ve always wanted.”

Are you looking forward to visiting a Netflix House? Which film or television series do you hope to see included in the lineup of stores and events? Let us know in the comments.

    Nosferatu

The WitchThe Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it HERE) is set to reach theatres on Wednesday, December 25th – and if you’re anxious to see the trailer, you’ll have the chance to see it this weekend, but only if you head out to see The Bikeriders (which is recommended anyway; you can read our 9/10 review at THIS LINK). The Nosferatu trailer is showing exclusively in theatres this weekend, attached to The Bikeriders.

An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen (Greta Schroeder). After Orlok reveals his vampire nature, Hutter struggles to escape the castle, knowing that Ellen is in grave danger. Meanwhile Orlok’s servant, Knock (Alexander Granach), prepares for his master to arrive at his new home.

Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.

The film stars Bill Skarsgard (It) as the title character, Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man: No Way Home) as crazy vampire hunter Von Franz, Lily-Rose Depp (The Idol) as Ellen Hutter and Nicholas Hoult (Renfield) as her husband Thomas – a role Skarsgard was going to play at one point. Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train) is in there as Thomas’s friend Friedrich Harding, with Emma Corrin (The Crown) as Friedrich’s wife Anna, Ralph Ineson (The Witch) as Von Franz’s cohort Dr. Wilhelm Sievers, and Simon McBurney (The Conjuring 2) in an unspecified role. Skarsgard has said that playing Nosferatu was like “conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me. … I do not think people are gonna recognize me in it.

Are you looking forward to Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu remake, and will you be heading out to see the trailer with The Bikeriders this weekend? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
