brad pitt, formula one

Rev up your engines, race fans and movie fans. Brad Pitt has teamed up with Joseph Kosinski — the visionary director with a keen sense for eye-popping set pieces, as displayed in his films Tron: Legacy and Top Gun: Maverick — for his new racing film Formula 1. If the amazing aerial scenes in Top Gun: Maverick are any indication, the racing sequences are sure to invoke the same amount of awe and thrills. Especially since the director, Kosinski, is working with the same creative team behind Top Gun: Maverick. He is also reuniting with screenwriter Ehren Krueger and producer Jerry Bruckheimer for the film.

Apple Original Films has now announced that they are partnering with Warner Bros. for the release of Formula 1, which has also now secured a premiere date for next summer on June 27, 2025. A press release informs us that the film, which also comes from Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment and seven-time F1 world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton’s Dawn Apollo Films banner, will be distributed in theatres around the world and in IMAX. International audiences can view the film beginning 25 June 2025. Made in collaboration with Formula 1, the new film is immersed in the exhilarating and cinematic world of F1, as filming takes place at races on the sport’s calendar.

Starring Brad Pitt as a former driver who returns to Formula 1, alongside Damson Idris as his teammate at APXGP, a fictional team on the grid, the feature has been shot during actual Grand Prix weekends as the team competes against the titans of the sport. The star-studded cast also includes Academy Award-nominee Kerry Condon, Academy Award-winner Javier Bardem, and Emmy Award-winner, Golden Globe Award nominee Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, Kim Bodnia and Samson Kayo.

Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”) directs and produces the feature alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer Films; and Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner for Plan B Entertainment, and Lewis Hamilton under his Dawn Apollo Films banner. The film is made in collaboration with Formula 1® and the F1 community, including the 10 F1 teams and their drivers, the FIA, and race promoters. Academy Award-nominee Ehren Kruger (“Top Gun: Maverick”) writes the screenplay. Copper CEO Penni Thow serves as executive producer.

Costner Yellowstone

Much has been said of Kevin Costner and whether or not he’ll return to the Dutton Ranch for one more ride on Yellowstone. And while Costner has been busy with his own western – the two-part epic Horizon: An American Saga – without John Dutton, a key part of what makes Yellowstone such a hit is missing. So, under what circumstances would Costner jump back in the saddle?

Appearing on Today (via EW), Costner explained why he was hesitant for any return but also what needs to change in order for him to rejoin Yellowstone. “I did it for five years, and I wanted to work more than once a year. We lost an entire year at one point, and I thought, that can’t happen again. It was well over a year. I thought I have to be in a position to make the things. Material has to be ready at certain times, and we weren’t able to do that. After five years, I thought, I’m not going to do this. If we can get that, we can do that, and I’ll do it.”

Costner continued, “I’ve supported [Yellowstone] and I’ve loved it, it’s been really important to me. I would love to go back under the right circumstances. I think that’s what all of us want. At this point, for me, it really needs to be the right circumstances.”

But now that filming has already started on the final season of Yellowstone, it seems highly unlikely that Kevin Costner will be back in any significant form. If he ends up being written off, we’ll certainly know that from the first episode. So if he does somehow return for this last set of episodes, it would have to fit that character arc perfectly (maybe as a flashback or we see him on another ranch). However, if the original series comes to an end without John Dutton – and he hasn’t been killed offscreen – a sequel series has been greenlit with Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler), Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton) and Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton) which could leave open the barn doors for a Costner return.

Do you expect to see Kevin Costner at all in the final season of Yellowstone? If not, how will it impact the series?

Cheers Woody

When Woody Harrelson came onto Cheers, he had big shoes to fill, serving as a replacement for Nicholas Colasanto and his character Coach following the actor’s death prior to season four. And his fellow bartenders and patrons didn’t take it easy on him, challenging him to tasks both physically and mentally.

As Ted Danson (Sam Malone) recently recalled on Conan O’Brien’s podcast (via EW), having such a young guy on the set allowed for some of his fellow cast members to put him to the test. “Thirty-seven is when you realize you’re no longer 25 or 24. So it was more not like hazing him, we just wanted to kick his ass in anything we could find. We started with basketball and as you later found out in life, he’s a really good basketball player, so he kicked our asses there.” In other words, the white man could jump! Following that, John Ratzenberg (Cheers barfly Cliff Calvin) had his own physical challenge for Woody Harrelson…which he also lost.

From there, the Cheers boys opted to give chess a shot, which it turned out Woody Harrelson was also skilled in. “To heck with this physical stuff, we’re gonna beat him mentally. Killed us at chess. So this is all in the first week really. So from then on it was like, if you had some awful mean prank to pull, you would not waste it on anyone else except Woody.”

In addition to beating down his cast, Woody Harrelson fared incredibly well on Cheers, proving a natural fit for the sitcom and making his mark on his first appearance. He later won an Emmy for his work, the only one in the cast to win the Supporting Actor honor during the show’s 11-season run, one more victory for Woody.

But despite all the hazing — and Woody Harrelson skipping the Cheers reunion at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards — there is no bad blood between the core cast. Danson and Harrelson will even hop back on the barstools for a new podcast titled Where Everybody Knows Your Name.

Were you a fan of Woody Harrelson on Cheers? How do you think he did as a replacement character?

Ian McKellen, falling, Player Kings

Per the BBC, the beloved Sir Ian McKellen has been hospitalized after falling off the stage during a performance of Player Kings at the Noël Coward Theatre in London. Thankfully, it sounds like he will be okay.

The actor, who plays John Falstaff in the production, was involved in a fight scene when he reportedly lost his footing and fell off the stage. He cried out for help, and the house lights came on. One member of the audience said it was “very shocking.” A representative for the Noël Coward Theatre shared a statement which said that McKellen will “make a speedy and full recovery.

Thank you to our audience and the general public for their well wishes following Ian’s fall during this evening’s performance of ‘Player Kings,’” reads the statement from the theatre. “Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make a speedy and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits. The production has made the decision to cancel the performance on Tuesday 18 June so Ian can rest. Those affected will be contacted by their point of purchase as soon as possible tomorrow. Thank you to doctors Rachel and Lee who were on hand in the audience and to all the venue staff for their support.Player Kings is a new version of William Shakespeare’s Henry IV, adapted by the award-winning writer and director Robert Icke.

McKellen has said that he has no intention of retiring so long as he remains healthy. One possible gig could see him reprise the role of Gandalf for the upcoming Gollum movie. The actor recently said that he has heard of the project but added, “There is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan.” Assuming everything falls into place, would he be willing to return to Middle-earth? “If I’m alive,” he said.

At 85 years old, Ian McKellen is no spring chicken, so I think we can all be grateful that the actor wasn’t more seriously hurt after falling off the stage. We here at JoBlo send our best wishes to McKellen for his continued speedy recovery.

Uncharted 2

After spending years stuck in the limbo of development hell and experiencing even more delays thanks to the pandemic, Sony’s live-action adaptation of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted video-game franchise was finally released two years ago, but what about the sequel? While presenting at the 2024 CineEurope trade show (via Variety), Steven O’Dell, president of international distribution at Sony Pictures, confirmed that Uncharted 2 is still in development.

Unfortunately, that’s about all we have for Uncharted 2, but fans will be pleased that it’s still in the works. The first movie starred Tom Holland as street-smart thief Nathan Drake, who is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune lost by Ferdinand Magellan 500 years ago. “What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs,” reads the synopsis. “If Nate and Sully can decipher the clues and solve one of the world’s oldest mysteries, they stand to find $5 billion in treasure and perhaps even Nate’s long-lost brother…but only if they can learn to work together.

Mark Wahlberg mentioned last year that a script for the sequel was in the process of being written, teasing that it could go just about anywhere after the mid-credits scene, but, perhaps most importantly, Sully will have a mustache this time. “I’ve heard lots of different ideas. I know somebody’s written a script, and they’re still working on it, and it would consist of having the mustache the whole entire time,” Wahlberg said. “Which completely makes sense; obviously, in that final scene, I have the mustache.” The actor is aware that fans did miss Sully’s mustache the first time around, which should give the sequel an added boost. “When I finally got the mustache, people really appreciated it,” he said. “And it was a nice tag to the end of that film. So if we can make it better than the first, you know, I’d be open to it, but I only know as much as you do right now.

What do you hope to see from Uncharted 2?

Tatina Maslany, The Nightbeast

She-Hulk star Tatiana Maslany has set up The Nightbeast as her next TV project, and it sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Per the official logline, The Nightbeast follows a young mother who is “unsatisfied with her seemingly perfect suburban life begins an affair with the boogeyman in her son’s closet — a surprisingly sexy man called the Nightbeast. But this harmless affair she thought to be a figment of her imagination begins to have unexpected consequences, as her two worlds increasingly begin to collide in this seductive, darkly comedic tale.” The project comes from Leah Rachel (Chambers) and Travis Jackson (Hemlock Grove), with the pilot being developed for Amazon MGM Studios.

In addition to starring in the pilot, Maslany will also produce The Nightbeast. Executive producers on the project include Peter Warren; Justin Levy, Fred Berger and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones for Range Studios’ Station26; Kristen Campo for Campout; and Jamie Babbit, who will also direct the pilot.

It remains to be seen if or when Maslany will suit up as Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk, again. The first season of the Disney+ series wasn’t as big of a hit as Marvel would have liked. When asked about a possible second season of the series earlier this year, Maslany said, “I don’t think so. I think we blew our budget, and Disney was like, ‘No thanks.’” The nine-episode series reportedly had a budget of $225 million, which isn’t exactly small potatoes, but CGI twerking doesn’t come cheap.

Maslany has also expressed a desire to make an appearance in Daredevil: Born Again. Charlie Cox suited up as Daredevil for several episodes of She-Hulk, with the two characters striking up something of a relationship. “I keep texting him being like, ‘Am I required for set today?’ And he says, ‘We’ll let you know by lunch,’” Maslany said. “But he just keeps putting it off. I’ve been waiting outside the set in my She-Hulk costume, so just put me in, coach.” While I doubt the upcoming Daredevil series will include an appearance from She-Hulk, I do hope we haven’t seen the last of Maslany in the role.
